The young woman was sitting as though she might get up at any minute, her dark brown hair hanging over her shoulders. But her blue eyes were staring into the distance, into the future she would never get to see…

Despite all Detective Jackie Cooke’s experience, the murder of vulnerable teenager Chloe Smedley shakes her to the core. Chloe’s body has been left in a cold backyard, carefully posed to make it look like she could get up at any minute. As Jackie studies her innocent face, she vows to find the monster who did this.

When Jackie tells Chloe’s mother her daughter is gone, the woman’s cries cut through her. She knows the pain of an unsolved crime only too well – the disappearance of her brother as a child still haunts her family. But then a second body is found, arranged on the side of the road in another macabre scene, and Jackie becomes sure she is hunting a serial killer. Someone has been preying on the missing and vulnerable for decades. Only Jackie seems to see that they were never lost. They were taken.

Her boss is pushing for a quick solution and has no time for Jackie’s theory. HAPPY PUB DAY TO THIS BANGERLICIOUS POLICE PROCEDURAL. JACKIE IS A BAD BISH.

Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. IYKYK, my reviews are always honest.

Writing: 5/5 | Plot: 4/5 | Ending: 4/5

THE PLOT

Jackson "Jackie" Cooke is 6.5 months pregnant when she's called onto the gruesome scene of a murdered and dismembered girl with Down's Syndrome. When a second body (or rather, pieces of it) shows up, Jackie knows she's on the trail of a serial killer and can't help but wonder if the same man is responsible for the disappearance of her brother many years ago.

MY OPINION

Okkkkuurrttt now THAT'S a solid police procedural. I loved the writing; every single word was intentionally driving the story forward. There was no "he put the dishes into the Bosch dishwasher" type writing—every scene was carefully crafted. The story didn't lag in any places and the pacing was great.

Usually there's a bit of a whirlwind ending, but I felt this one stayed the course. Of course it was highly unbelievable and very Criminal Minds, but it didn't try to throw in a million other trauma tropes to finish with a bang. All the loose strings were neatly tied up. I only docked a star for the plot and ending because you really had to suspend your disbelief.

After reading b2b male authored books that reduced women to mounds of flesh with terrible personalities, it was relieving to read a book with a bad ass female lead. Now this is the type of female MC I can get behind and I was cheering for her the entire time.

Is it kinda irresponsible to be chasing after serial killers in your third trimester? Of course. But just blow past that fact and acknowledge that Jackie is a wholesome woman who fights the good fight and loves her kids. I'm also glad she kicked bum ass Gus to the curb. What a lame excuse for a man... mad because he has to take care of his own kids while his wife pays all the bills, leaving him less time to dip his dick into whoever he pleases... BYE. Team Jackie all the way.

I also appreciated the social commentary AND making 2/3 of the detectives POC. What a nice change from the predominantly white male cast that usually accompanies this genre. Kudos to Riches who didn't try to do TOO MUCH by making their ethnicity their entire personality. I also thought Riches did a great job by showing that those with Down's Syndrome can be very able and independent, instead of going with the usual stereotype that they are gigantic, helpless babies.

All in all, a solid police procedural. I will definitely keep my eye out for book #2. Can't wait to see Jackie back in action!

PROS AND CONS

Pros: great writing, well-paced, good mystery/suspense, funny and light-hearted at times, fair representation

Cons: you will be required to suspend your disbelief A LOT... especially for the ending

Follow me on IG I'm funny over there too (hopefully)

Knocked it out of the ballpark!!!

This is the first book in a new series by Marnie Riches. Woohoo!!! It was fantastic!

DS Jackie Cooke has a lot on her plate. She is a pregnant detective and mother of twin boys. When she is called to the scene of a young woman's murder, she is rocked to her core. The young woman has been dismembered and posed. Seeing the victim’s face, reminds Jackie of her missing brother who also had Downs Syndrome. She begins her investigation when another body is found, posed on the side of the road. Could this be the work of a serial killer????

Her boss wants these cases solved NOW Jackie is already stressed, and that stress intensifies when she finds a brightly colored bracelet on her counter - the same bracelet her brother was wearing when he went missing.

This is how you do it!!!! This book was fantastic. I found it to be a riveting page turned that captured my interest from the very first page! This was a brilliant police procedural that had me flipping the pages and glued to my seat. Fans of police procedurals will not be disappointed.

I both cheered for and felt for DS Cooke during the book. As she worked to solve the case, I was feeling the tension and dread. I said it before and I will say it again, this was fantastic! I enjoyed being introduced to the supporting characters. I look forward to getting to know them and Jackie more in future books! There were also characters in this book that I was booing and hissing at due to their behavior.

I have not read Marnie Riches before and can't wait to read more of her books. Finger crossed she writes fast because I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Gripping, captivating, dark and tense.

My 1000th Review on NetGalley - and it’s a belter!!!

4-5 stars

Heavily pregnant DS Jackie (Jackson) Cook and her partner David Tang attend a murder in a pub courtyard and it’s a weird one with similarities to another that is equally gruesome. The victim proves to be 17 year old Chloe Smedley, a teenager with Downs Syndrome. The case resonates and feels deeply personal to Jackie as her brother Lucian disappeared without trace at the age of nine, he too had Downs. The story is principally from Jackie’s perspective but is interspersed with the killers “smooth” voice which strikes a chilling blow from the beginning.

Wow. I could not put this down and I guess one of the biggest compliments you could pay an author is to say you can’t wait until the next one! I really like Jackie, she feels so real as she desperately balances huge demands of work with home especially when she has a useless workshy husband in Gus . Through Jackie’s loss of Lucian you to feel her empathy with the devastated families she deals with. The rest of the characters are very well portrayed, there is likable DC Shazia Malik, her harpy of a boss Venables and I love the combative exchanges with between them. Go Jackie.

This is a good, solid police procedural, there’s nothing unnecessary, there’s no prevarication unless it’s to flush out a character. It’s well written, the pace is fast, it’s gritty, gruesome, intense, chilling and utterly spine tingling in places. The case grows exponentially, it’s staggering as you try to get a get your head around it - think something that the BAU team of tv show Criminal Minds may have got their teeth into. It’s exciting, tense, heart in the mouth stuff as the killer leaves the conundrum of an utterly bizarre and macabre puzzle which feels personal to Jackie. I did guess the outcome but this in no way detracts from the enjoyment of the book.

Overall, this is a well written crime thriller with a good injection of humour which helps to counterbalance some of the darkness that evolves.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Bookouture for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

4.5s

Detective Jackie Cooke and her partner Detective Dave Tung were called to the scene of a bizarre murder, a posed body at the rear of a pub. Chloe Smedley was a young Down Syndrome girl, murdered and discarded – her death brought Jackie’s past back to her in a rush, when her young brother Julian, also a Down Syndrome boy, went missing. Jackie, over six months pregnant, vowed to get justice for Chloe if it was the last thing she did.

As more bodies – and body parts – were discovered, the horror of a serial killer with the fetish that was showing, sent the force into overdrive. But Jackie’s boss was demanding a quick resolution to the case, wanted Jackie to hand the case over to others and work behind the desk. Jackie refused. Meanwhile her home life – musician husband Gus and nine-year-old twin boys, plus her mother – were creating havoc. Jackie was having trouble doing it all, and Gus wasn’t helping. As the killer hunted, he was also stalking Jackie – but was she aware? The danger she was facing – she and her unborn child – was astronomical. And as the days and weeks went by, Jackie was more and more determined…

The Lost Ones is the 1st in the Detective Jackie Cooke series by Marnie Riches and it was a doozy!! Brutal murders, a very pregnant detective, a vindictive boss, a lazy, ineffective husband – and that was only the beginning! I thoroughly enjoyed my first by this author and will look out for #2 to read when it’s released. Plenty of red herrings, twists and chilling moments, I did pick the ‘bad guy’ not long before the reveal, but thoroughly enjoyed it regardless! Highly recommended.

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

As a new reader of Marnie Riches, this is a cracker of an introduction!
This is a dark, action packed read that crams a lot of work into just one book. It was very busy at times, but I much prefer that to being a 'slow burn'!
The plot keeps the reader racing through the story, but I admit to struggling with the many subplots occasionally.
This is the start of a new series, and Detective Cooke is a fabulous character to lead us through. Determined and head strong, I look forward to seeing what happens to her next!

After enjoying a number of the author’s earlier books I was very pleased to get this. But unfortunately I was a little disappointed. First the good stuff.

I enjoyed the plot. There is a serial killer leaving bits of bodies and torsos publicly displayed at locations around Manchester. Some are found with parts of mannequins as well and some mannequin parts are found on their own. This is a very tricky mystery to solve as there are no clues or evidence to be found.

I also liked the main characters. Detective Sergeant Jackson (Jackie) Cooke, 6 ½ months pregnant, heads up a fabulous team. Others include Detective David Tang, her loyal sidekick and new, very promising officer DC Shazia Malik. On the technical side is Clever Bob, he seems like a bit of a teddy bear.

On the other hand the killer, whom we met in the first few pages, seemed like a caricature. I swear I’ve read the same ‘thoughts’ by dozens of fictional baddies and it was a bit cringey! Also, did we have to have the stereotypical nasty boss, Inspector Tina Venables. Again, she and her ilk, are a dime a dozen.

While I enjoyed the plot, it was quite predictable. I had a few guesses and, yep, they all panned out. I did not guess who the villain was though which was a good thing. However the story went exactly as I thought it would. And what’s with the latest ‘thing’ of having the female detectives pregnant? In this book, after a serious car accident which has potential repercussions for Jackie, she should have been placed on immediate leave. But she wasn’t, which led me to think “we’re not going there, are we?” Yep we did (eye rolls).

It was readable and entertaining but no great masterpiece. Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

Detective Jackie Cooke #1

The young woman was sitting like she might get up any minute, her dark brown hair hung over her shoulders, But her blue eyes were staring into the distance, into the future she would never see....

Despite all Detective Jackie Cooke's experience, the murder of vulnerable teenager Chloe Smedley shakes her to the core. Chloe's body had been left in the cold backyard, carefully posed to make it look like she could get up at any minute. As Jackie studies her innocent face, she vows to find the monster who did this.

Detective Jackie Cooke is heavily pregnant. Her husband doesn't really support her or their twin boys. Her brother had disappeared without trace when they were just children. Jackie gets called out to investigate the gruesome murder of a young girl with Downs Syndrome. Some of her body parts are missing. Then more body parts turn up, but they don't belong to Chloe.

Detective Jackie Cooke and her team are looking for a serial killer. The plotline is gripping with a mixture of likeable and unlikeable characters. With so many twists, I didn't know if I was coming or going. I did eventually guess who was behind the killings, but that didn't spoil my enjoyment of the book. What a great start to a new series this book is. I can't wait to see what the next instalment has in store.

I dont know about this one, its pretty well written, suspenseful with an interesting case and a murderer who’s not easy to guess.

It felt like most things are present to make the book enjoyable, a strong female character, little drama in her personal life… I shouldve probably appreciate it more but I couldnt connect with Jackie or the case for some reasons.

Ok so… I’m giving this book 4 stars. It was highly readable for women. Especially women who have children. Here is a woman, Jackson Cooke - Detective, mother, wife of a dick wad, daughter, sister of an abducted Down’s brother. She’s investigating a serial killer who seems to be targeting her weak spots and she’s desperate to figure it out despite her pregnancy and demeaning boss.
I think this book says a lot about women being discriminated against in law enforcement and about women embracing their power in the household.
It got a bit draggy and I guessed the killer early on but I still really liked it and related to the MC 100%.
It’s pretty graphic and the killer preys on vulnerable people and those with disabilities so it might not suit everyone. 🥰🥰🥰💙💙💙💙

In this new series début, DS Jackie (Jackson) Cook a veteran detective for the Greater Manchester Police and her partner, David Tang attend a murder in a pub backyard. The victim, seventeen-year-old Chloe Smedley, is missing body parts and she has Downs Syndrome. The case is a very difficult one for Jackie as it reminds her of the disappearance of her little brother several years ago. Jackie is heavily pregnant, already has two sons and is struggling to maintain her home life and solve this case. A great read with an interesting main character in Jackie who is feisty and determined. A super, solid, intense police procedural.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Bookouture via NetGalley at my request and this review is my own unbiased opinion.

I really enjoyed the first installment with the Jackie Cooke series.

When a local girl with downs goes missing after school detective Jackie Cooke is on the scene immediately. The case triggers memories of her missing brother the one case she could never solve. When more children with downs start to go missing there's someone out there purposely targeting those who trust too much. Jackie won't rest until she finds out who and why.

This was a great book and I am so excited to get stuck into the series so I hope it continues. I honestly have zero idea why it's taken me so long to actually write this review because I read this book months ago!!

Jackie is a great protagonist and I found that I was completely engaged in her story throughout the entire novel. The police procedure was written so well and her commitment to the case was amazing to read!!! I loved it!!! It was an emotional rollercoaster from beginning to end a hard hitting subject matter and it doesn't get any easier as the book continues but its completely worth it.

All in all I rate this 4 stars 🌟 . I cannot wait to see where Jackie's story goes and I plan to go on the journey with her. I'm hooked!! If you are a fan of any crime fiction series written by Lisa Regan, DK Hood, Carla Kovach or Wendy Dranfield then this is the book for you.

Thanks Netgalley, The publishers and Marnie Richies for the ARC in exchange for my fair and honest opinions.

I am adding 'All the Pretty Ones' by Marnie Riches to my list of 'first book in any new police procedurial/mystery series that managed to seriously impress my grey cells!

This book had everything that I want to read in a gritty, fast paced, slightly macabre police procedural thriller. Plus, in detective thrillers I am always a sucker for a storyline where the case in question somehow overlaps a personal tragedy suffered in the past by the detective in charge of solving the case. It takes the detecting skills of the MC to a different level and there is never a dull moment because its personal. Mystery/police procedural thrillers is one of my favourite genres to read and it is always a good thing when I am spoiled for choice.

A definite, impressive start to a new police procedurial series and I can't wait to read more!

My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture and the author Marnie Riches for the e-Arc of the book.

This is the first in a new detective series by the author, and I'll happily read more. The MC is a very pregnant detective with a rather messy life at home. I think this is the first time I've seen a main character have an imperfect husband (to say the least), which was refreshing. Her juggling her 9 y/o twins, trying to pay bills, dealing with constant vertigo and nausea and pains with her pregnancy, a micromanaging boss who hates her, grief from the disappearance of her brother during her childhood and a dysfunctional family of her own all added to it.

The plot really is the kind you would ONLY see in a book like this but the police work is good and the MC is mostly very likeable and believable. Trigger warning for the murder and dismemberment of vulnerable people like a teen with Downs Syndrome.

I read a digital ARC of this book for review.

This was brilliant once I started reading it I could not put it down. I am so happy that this is the start a new series. It is also the first book I have read by Marnie Riches, needless to say I am now a fan.
Detective Jackie Cooke is a cop with a backstory and frankly these make for the best detectives. She is six months pregnant with a messy home life. We are introduced to Jackie and her team as they hunt for a serial killer - reader beware Riches does not hold back when describing a murder scene. This book is a police procedural novel and it excels at it. The characters are all well rounded and fleshed out. As first books go it could not have been any better.
I really cannot wait to read the second book in this series
Many thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for supplying me with an ARC of this novel.

The Lost Ones introduces readers to Detective Sargent Jackson (Jackie) Cooke a pregnant mother of two whose home life is extremely hectic and whose boss wants her either sat behind a desk or at home out of the way not out catching serial killers. Which is exactly what she and her partner Dave end up doing when they are called to a macabre crime scene in a beer garden in Manchester.

And what they discover is only the start of what is an engaging story, that leads to a heartbreaking discovery for Jackie and a shocking confrontation between her and the killer. But I did work out who the killer was and if I'm honest I found all the home life distractions a little too distracting.

Yet, the characters were likable, and the story definitely had potential not to mention lots of grusome moments which I loved.

Detective Jackie Cooke catches the case of a murdered young girl with Downes Syndrome. This case is very difficult for her because it reminds her of the disappearance of her little brother several years ago. Jackie is pregnant in her third trimester and struggling to maintain her home life and stay on the job to solve this case. Along with her partner, Jackie will find that this serial killer has been active for years. Who is it and will Jackie be able to catch this person?

This is book 1 in the Detective Jackie Cooke series. I was impressed with the writing and would recommend. I look forward to more books in this series.

This is the first in a series and it starts off with a bang! Unfortunately, it was too much of a bang for me. I enjoyed the characters and the side stories but it's a case of too much, too soon. I understand laying the ground work for subsequent books but it was too much for one book. I found the writing a bit clunky, but not too bad. Overall, too many side stories and disjointed writing made this one just 'meh' for me.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'The Lost Ones' by Marnie Riches.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Marnie Riches, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 7th June 2022.

This is the first book I have read by this author. It is also the first book in the 'Detective Jackie Cooke series'.

I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that 'Fans of Kendra Elliott, Rachel McLean and Val McDermid will love The Lost On' I am a huge fan of Kendra Elliott so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue and 48 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in Manchester, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, UK 🇬🇧. The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture.

This book is written in third person perspective and main protagonist is Detective Jackie Cooke and the perp. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.

'The Lost Ones' discusses some topics that may upset some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Marnie discusses/includes death of disabled children.

This book is extremely well written with vivid descriptions that really set the scene and kept me on the edge of my seat. The cover and synopsis suited the storyline perfectly.

OMG!!! MIND ABSOLUTELY BLOWN!!!!

Love, LOVE, LOVED this absolute page turner!! It may be the first book I have read by Marnie but I can promise you it won't be the last!!! As soon as I've written this up I'm off to add all her books to my wishlist. The storyline is absolutely ram packed with mystery, deceit, secrets, lies, romance, tension, suspense and OMG the twists just kept on coming again and again!!! Just when I thought everything that could happen had happened BOOM there was another shocker around the corner. Every time I kept telling myself one more chapter the one I was in ended at a point where there was no way I could stop reading so I absolutely devoured it in one sitting!! I will say thay the fact that the victims being disabled or vulnerable hit a bit close to home but it didn't stop me loving the book. Once I had ignored the fact that the victims were disabled/ vulnerable I absolutely loved the gore and the discovery at the end. Completely sick, amazing and unique!!! I'm a bit morbid and love gore in books and Marnie you did this perfectly!! I love the fact that although this is a crime thriller there is some light hearted moments throughout so it's not all darkness. I WAS absolutely blown away and considering I read approximately 30 books a month that is certainly no easy feat so a HUGE congratulations on that Marnie. Marnie mentioned Frederick Ruysch and Gunther Von Hagens so looked them up and found the information intriguing. Love it when books include names and places I can look up as helps me picture what's going on. I really could not recommend this book any more. If you are looking for something unique, filled with suspense and that will blow your mind then this is definitely the book for you!!

It is always worrying when starting a new series as you have no idea who the characters are. It is very important for me to bond with not only the lead protagonists but strangely I find it important that I like the pathologist too. In this case the pathologist was Nick Swinton and I am pleased to say that I really liked him and his personality.

DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT READING THIS UNTIL YOU HAVE CLEARED YOUR SCHEDULES AS YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PUT IT DOWN!!!

I wasn't just 100% invested in the storyline but also in the characters. Every single one of the characters were well defined, realistic and strong. I absolutely LOVED Jackie who is absolutely kick a## and I cannot wait to meet her again. I couldn't stand Venanbles and although I loved the way Jackie stood up to her I just find her to be a horrible cow who doesn't give a monkey about people and is just concerned with rates, figures and making herself good. The fact that Jackie had twins made me relate to her being a twin mum myself. I also loved her sons Lewis and Percy and can also relate to something that Jackie suspects with one of them. God help if I have orange juice in cereal to look forward too 😂. I found it hilarious that Beryl (Jackie's mum) got them mixed up as my twins Gran does the same thing 😂. However I wasn't a fan of Beryl and think that she not only lives in the last but could do so much more to help Jackie. I thought Ted was so lovely and sweet especially the way he was with Lewis and Percy. I couldn't stand Gus from the start and my feelings were right about him. However I completely misjudged another character and was gob smacked. I won't say who as I don't want to spoil it for future readers. I adored Nick and am hoping something will spark between him and Jackie, they would definitely suit. Cave makes a fantastic partner and they work perfectly together. The fact that he is there for Jackie at all times is so lovely and I'd love to have a friend like him in my life, Shazla also made a good member of the team and I'm looking forward to getting to know her better. Jackie, Dave and Shazla make an absolutely fantastic team and I cannot wait to meet them all again, hopefully very soon! 😉
Gus arse hole. Nick lush
. Ted (beryl partner) lovely so sweet

A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Marnie on what promises to be a massive best seller!!! I WAS absolutely shocked by so many events but OMG what was said by a certain person at a certain time was absolutely shocking!!! I can't say anything else but when you've read it you'll know!!! Welcome to my favourite author list Marnie and here's to your next explosive success 🥂!!!

Overall an absolutely addictive, mind blowing page turner that will keep you up with a racing heart until you've finished!!!

Genres covered in this book include Thriller, Psychological Fiction, British Detective Stories, Police Procedural, Suspense, Thriller, Women's Detective Fiction, Domestic Fiction, Women Sleuths, Psychological Thriller, Domestic Thriller and Mystery amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Kendra Elliott, Rachel McLean, Val McDermid and anyone looking for a red hot crime thriller!!!

324 pages.

This book is just 99p to purchase on kindle via Amazon or free on kindle unlimited (at time of review) which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

Rated 5 /5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

Detective Jackie (Jackson) Cooke is in her last few weeks of work before she goes off on maternity leave. At almost eight months pregnant (this is the second or third book which I have read recently where the investigating officer is heavily pregnant, seems to be a popular trope at the moment), Jackie is stressed dealing with her obnoxious boss, irritating mother, feckless husband, & their rambunctious nine-year-old twin boys alongside being the only one bringing in any real money. To top it off, her reliable partner, Detective Dave Tang is about to leave on holiday for two weeks, so when the body of a young woman is found outside a local pub in Manchester, Jackie is going to be snowed under.

The body of Chloe Smedley is left carefully posed but is missing her limbs. The murder of anyone is horrible but this one strikes particularly close to home as Chloe had Down's Syndrome, as did Jackie's younger brother Lucian, who disappeared one day from a playground & was never heard of again. CCTV from outside Chloe's school seem to show that she knew her killer & went willingly to meet them, & they knew how to hide from the cameras. As Jackie & her small team start to investigate, the case widens out into a possible serial killer case as it comes apparent that vulnerable people have been going missing from the area for years but a pattern has never been established. How many victims have there been & was Lucian one of them?

I found this one difficult to rate. On the one hand, the plot itself is good, tightly written, & the main character is easy to like, but on the other there are some annoyances. First of all, is the obligatory conflict between two women (Jackie & her boss) - oh to read a book where women actually support one another. Secondly - Gus, not sure I have ever hated a character as much since I read Tess of the D'Urbervilles & developed a loathing of Angel Clare. Gus is a father of two (soon to be three) who leaves it to his wife to bring in the all money whilst he faffs about with his band doing the odd gig here & there, who thinks its babysitting to look after his own kids (no love, it's called parenting), & seems to do nothing except whine & freeload off his wife.

Overall I'm rating this 3.5 stars (rounded up to 4 on sites which do not accept half star ratings) mainly because I really did think the plot was well done. I did work out whodunnit as it was fairly obvious. If this is going to be a series though, I think Jackie & her team have great potential.

My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Bookouture, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

Not since Ed McBain's 87th Precinct police procedurals have I enjoyed a mystery like the Lost Ones by Marnie Riches. This is the first in a series and I would definitely be open to reading more of these Detective Jackie Cooke stories.

It starts with the murder of a Down Syndrome teen, Chloe Smedley, posed in a wintry backyard almost as if set for a diorama. The innocent face shakes Detective Cooke in a way that she has not experienced in a long while. It could be that she is feeling overprotective due to her pregnancy, but it runs deeper than that. Her autistic brother was abducted when they were young and there are some similar notes that resonate to Jackie in a disturbing way.

Chloe's mother receives the news of her dead daughter with an attempt at stoicism and then her face collapses in a way that reminds Jackie of her mother on the night they heard about her brother's abduction. There are way too many beats that feel as if there is an intentional force purposefully echoing the past. Little did Detective Cooke realize that she is going to face her brother's murderer, and he wants her to know it.

Worst of all is that Jackie's baby might actually be the prize a serial killer is looking for. Horrifying story; gripping narrative, and some really off-kilter characters. Enjoyable read.

The Lost Ones is a good place to start, if like me, you are new to Marnie Riches.

This novel starts a new series, introducing D.S. Jackie (Jackson) Cooke, a veteran detective for the Greater Manchester Police.

As with the start of any new series, there is a fair bit of 'setting the scene' that won't necessarily feature in future novels. As such, the reader is given a broad overview of the life and history of our main character.

I found the story of the investigation to be engaging and fast paced whilst still highlighting police procedures that need to be followed.

I made a connection with Jackie and her team and despaired at the less than delicious apples in the detective barrel. However, with Jackie's leadership, they worked together to pick at every thread in order to unravel this mystery.

There were some parts that were fairly predictable but I think that there is a bit of detective in us all that pats ourselves on the back, when we're found to be correct, in these instances.

Ultimately the unpicked threads are woven expertly together to produce a completely different picture to the one I expected and was even tied up with a pretty bow.

I looked forward to returning to Manchester and 'helping' D.S. Cooke and her team solve, what I'm sure will be, many more heinous and seemingly unsolvable murders.

4.5 upped to 5*)
Gut instinct made me read this arc and gut instinct was right as it's a gripping and well written mix of twisty thriller and family saga.
It brings you to some very dark places, alternates the pure horror of the mind of a very warped serial killer with scenes from family life where not everything is perfect or happy.
i loved Jackie's strength: she's heavily pregnant, a serial killer is taunting her, and her family life is not at her best but she wants to overcome difficulties and catch the killer.
The thriller is twisty, gritty, and I was surprised by almost all the twists. It's a fast paced and gripping story and the last part left me breathless as the pace gets even faster.
I think this is the excellent start of a new series and I'm very curious to read the next one as discover what's next in Jackie's personal and professional live.
There's a lot of potential and this one is highly recommended even if it's not for the faint of heart.
Many thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

This is the first book in a new detective series by Marnie Riches. I have to admit I’m always a little bit apprehensive when starting a new series. Will it live up to my expectations. Well this book certainly did that. Right from the prologue I was captivated and couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. A completely gripping police crime thriller with a great storyline and excellent characters. I did guess who the guilty party was quite early on but that in no way took away from my enjoyment of this book. I can’t wait to read the next one in the series.

3-3.5 stars
It felt like a lot was happening at the same time. Case related stuff, work life, personal life, past life so many things happening all together. While watching a movie/episode of a series, the effect is different but if the same happens while reading, it feels like there a lot going on. Maybe I'll feel better once I read the following books and all the tangents make some more sense.
I had an inkling about who the killer would be and was delighted when my guess was correct.
Jackson Cooke reminded me a lot of Natlie Ward (A character by Carol Wyer). So many similarities - spineless husband, kids, a little chemistry with someone they work with. As I've read 3 books starring Natlie Ward, I couldn't connect well with Jackson Cooke and that is another big reason why I couldn't connect with this book.
It's a well written book so I plan to read the next book as well before deciding that this detective series/author isn't for me.

British crime books are my weakness, I was excited to start a new series. The crime\serial killer itself did not disappoint. It was complex, not easily guessable, dark, and smart. I liked the main characters and I always have a soft spot for detectives who break the rules. I think personal side stories of the main detectives always make the book more interesting , but in this one the pregnancy was unnecessary. The husband drama by itself was enough, plus it was unrealistic that she didn’t miscarriage, I will most likely continue the series, but it won’t be at the top of my list.

I was SO excited to read this book, the first one in a new series, yay! I knew I would be in for a great read, as I have really enjoyed previous books by this author.

Jackie Cooke is a police officer with a very stressful life. She has a demanding career, twin boys, a mother who lives in her basement (and who seems more than a bit flaky, to me) and a husband who can't really be relied upon to keep the home fires burning. Oh, and she is 6.5 months pregnant as well.

I read this book very quickly, reading it whenever I had a spare moment. I loved the character of Jackie - flawed but strong. I really liked her colleagues Dave and Shazia as well. I even liked her boss, even though she was not a likeable person, it was good to have someone to boo under my breath! Couldn't stand Jackie's husband Gus though. So, therefore, characterizations done really well.

When I read crime thrillers, I try and figure out who the murderer is and I did not see this one coming at all!

Great read. Can't wait to read the next one!

5 stars from me.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.

This is the start of a new crime series with the second one due to come out in November, crime thrillers are another one of my favourite genres to read, especially ones with a strong lead female detective.

Wow wow and just WOW! Jackie , Dave & Shazia are the absolute dream team.

Jackie is a woman after my own heart, she’s the sole breadwinner in her family with her mum Beryl living in the basement, her husband Gus a failed musician with no job , her twin sons being a handful like any 9 year olds are and even during an unexpected pregnancy she still takes everything in her stride and carries on being a full time Detective Sargent hunting down criminals all whilst still being haunted by her brother Lucians disappearance years and years ago.

This story has some waiting with baited breath until the next instalment as I need to know what’s next for Jackie and her family after all the revelations that unfold during this book.

Jackie is one fearless woman and I really couldn’t get enough of her.

Detective Jackie Cooke is beside herself with her most recent case. Seventeen-year-old Chloe Smedley was found dead and the first thing that Jackie recognized is that young Chloe had down syndrome. This brings to mind the loss of her little brother who disappeared as a child, also someone with down syndrome. This gives Jackie even more incentive to find who killed Chloe.

As disturbing as Chloe‘s body was discovered, when another victim is discovered in a very similar manner, Jackie realizes that she is looking for someone rather heinous. In fact, while this first book is narrated from Jackie’s point of view, the killer, dubbed “The Monster”, also expresses their opinion, even to the point of watching Jackie on the sidelines and often at crime scenes.

The crime scenes are bad enough, but when something eerie shows up in her home, Jackie strongly feels that the current case is connected to the loss of her brother all those years ago. Jackie’s hands are full on the homefront as well. She has twin nine-year-old boys and is in her third trimester of pregnancy. Furthermore, things with her husband are not going well and her mother, living downstairs from her, is bitter and condescending.

Jackie is determined to catch this killer before yet another body is found, navigating difficult waters all while not realizing that she herself is in danger. All the Pretty Ones is a compelling read and a fabulous start to this series by Marnie Riches.
