The uncrowned king of Barnett University. He's like a freaking celebrity around here. It's totally ridiculous. People, by which I mean grown women, actually stalk him on the internet. And around campus. Apparently, he's god's gift to both football and the ladies (I'm using that term loosely). All he has to do is smile and girls fall right onto their backs before spreading their legs wide. I've heard that he's already plowed his way through half the female population at Barnett.
My guess is that he'll work his way through the second half before he gets drafted to the NFL later this year. Yeah...I don't plan to be one of them. The guy is nothing more than a conceited player. You know the type—a steroid infused meathead coasting through college on his football prowess.
Ugh.
I have three words for you—avoid, avoid, avoid.
Need I say more?
I don't think so. I've had the sad misfortune of running into him on campus. Literally. As in—I literally slammed into him before spilling my iced coffee all over that wide rippling chest of his (did I just say that?). What I learned from the experience is that Roan King is one hell of a cocky son of a— I also learned that he has the most spectacular chest. And don't get me started on those abs...
I could probably cut diamonds on them.
Unfortunately for me, Operation—Avoid Roan King isn't going so well. Everywhere I go, there he is. If he wasn't so ridiculously hot, he would be a hell of a lot easier to forget. With his dark hair, shocking, turquoise-colored eyes and (damn him) buff body, he's easily the most gorgeous guy I've ever laid eyes on.
Crap...see what I mean?
I have the sneaking suspicion that Roan King will lead to my utter ruin and downfall.

I'm sure this will be a popular favourite for some but just 35% in and I have a few issues...
First, the characters don't look anything like those on the cover. I mean the girl is a ballet dancer with honey blonde hair for one, and he is meant to be a football god... with muscles to spare. (And, um... is he seriously copping a feel?)
Second, nothing has happened. There is no plot. Just repeated descriptions of how hot the guy is. Over and over again. He's so hot apparently that the author even says:
He sounds almost too good to be true. But that’s the thing. He is.
What? Is he not real, then? Have we been reading arias about his uber-steaminess in vain?.
Third: Everyone is constantly "cocking their head" ... I counted 19 times. This was sometimes mixed up a bit with the occasional "cocked his brow".
And I don't know about you but my female besties never walk me around the house in just a g-string. Nor do they ever pounce on me with big bear hugs and maul me in front if their boyfriends, no matter how much they've missed me. But maybe that's just me.
But finally, I personally like it when a story set in a university at least presumes that undergraduate students are not all infantile, sex crazed idiots. Alas... 'twas not to be with this edition...
“For the next six weeks, you’re going to work with a partner on a project that will be worth sixty percent of your final grade in this class..... Yes, that’s right . Sixty percent. It will be worth more than anything else you do in here".
Wow... really? Because maybe there could be a follow up assignment worth more. No? Huh.
Could there really have been a business major who did not understand the meaning of sixty percent? It's possible I guess. Especially since none of them seemed to have read any kind of course outline either, an outline which (hopefully) would have alerted them to major assessment items. Instead, they all seemed about as shocked and perplexed as a group of high school students surprised by a pop quiz on the last day of term.
I dont know... I guess these are just little things. But they were enough to keep pulling me out of the story. And the story hadn't even had time to stretch it's legs and begin. I needed more of a hook, perhaps.
This one sounded good but in the end, it just wasn't for me.
Overall Opinion: This was a pretty light and relatively low drama story. I liked both characters just fine and I was rooting for their happiness. I didn't feel like the story fully met its potential though. Something was missing that I just can't quite put my finger on. Maybe it was that they both shared their secret feelings with the other, but it didn't get as deep into the characterizations as I would've liked. I'm a sucker for college football Hs, so I'll probably continue on with this theme...but this was just an ok read for me.
Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Ivy and Roan's story. Ivy had been gone for 15 months working with a ballet company in Paris, and she returns to the college to bump into the campus manwhore the first day. He propositions her, and she shoots him down. He is instantly intruiged by her, and they keep on getting thrown to each other in different situations. After a while, both of them see that there is more to each one of them than expected, and they start an unlikely friendship. Stronger feelings start to develop, and they fall in love. There is some family and friend drama, some sweet moments, and life changing moments...but they get their HFN ending.
POV: This alternated between Ivy and Roan's POV (mostly Ivy).
Overall Pace of Story: Good. It flowed well, and I never felt the need to skim.
Instalove: No. I felt like there was some good development of feelings into love status.
H rating: 4 stars. Roan. He took a while for me to like, but I did. Once he shed the tough guy, meathead, manwhore exterior he was a super sweet guy inside. He was all about the h and didn't care what others thought about it.
h rating: 4 stars. Ivy. I liked how she stuck to her guns and didn't let herself get swept up in all that is Roan. She was ambitious, and really sweet with him once she saw who he really was.
Sadness level: Low. No tissues needed.
Heat level: Low. I was expecting some hot scenes, and it just didn't happen. :(
Descriptive sex: Yes and no. I'd say maybe 2 scenes -- other than that, there are just mentions of sex in the past tense.
Safe sex: Yes. Condoms were used.
OW/OM drama: Surprisingly low
Sex scene with OW or OM: No
Cheating: No
Possible Triggers: Mild
Closure: This had ok closure, but I wanted more (don't I always ;D). I would call it a HFN ending.
How I got it: It came with my scribed subscription.
Safety: Safe with exception - Does Not have cheating - Does Not have a descriptive sex scene with OW/OM - Does have the H pushing the h away (for her benefit) - Does have a ~1.5 week separation between the h and H - Does Not have abuse - Does Not have OTT sad parts - Does Not have a HEA ending.
don't be fooled by the cover there are not many steamy scenes in this book the heroine is "not like other girls" the hero is a manwhore until he falls in love with the heroine
there was a good portion of the book that reminded me of the old school new adult books this may be that kind of book but still, the heroine was annoying and needed to grow up could put all that aside considering her age however, she contradicts herself a lot social kind of snowflake which is never a winner for me as this was on audio I pushed trough
I love these new adult sports romances I keep finding around. Although I don't always find everything great to read, they always seem to manage to keep my attention and that's always nice.
This may only be my second JS book but I'm really, really liking her work. Yes, this book could come off over-the-top sweet and too mushy but I was loving it all up. I mean, what's not to like with a jock that finally falls in love? With a girl who didn't who this big man on campus was?
I loved the chemistry between Roan and Ivy. Their connection and how their relationship developed was just too good. And despite their attraction with each other, they didn't get all sex-y. Okay, gotta LOL with that since it wasn't for the lack of trying from Ivy's end but, man oh man, did Roan become gentleman-ly or what? But these two were such joy to read. They both had good heads on their shoulders and really wanted to make something of themselves after college. Their conflicts were realistic that they were a bit predictable but I loved they were eventually able to meet midway and have some sort of compromise to make their relationship work. It really made for an enjoyable reading for me.
Good thing this is the first book in the series. That can only mean that I can look forward to reading about them in the rest of the other books.
This is a tough one to rate. I totally liked the storyline which is why I stayed with it. But the writing was too repetitive. She would say the same thing, 3 different ways, one sentence after the other. Certain points were repeated throughout the entire book where it had me skimming knowing I didn't miss anything. I also felt like there was a missed opportunity with their first time. I don't need sex in a book, but sometimes it's called for. They had great chemistry, he has a history of being with a lot of women, so seeing how he's falling for her, their first time would have been great being inside his head. And we didn't get one detail. I was hugely disappointed and I sort of checked out after that. I do want to read the next one about Sam so I will give that one a shot.
A new-to-me-author with another college football "King" that is worshipped far and wide and everywhere in between. And a talented dancer who just isn’t interested . . . until she finds herself in over her head with the jock who lives next door. I actually found this one to be a very pleasant surprise with its own brand of freshness. I loved the two college-age protagonists. Both brought game and intelligence to this story, including sizzling chemistry that was written to slowly ignite and when it did, it was such fun-to-read. I’m a major fan of sports-themed romances and this one certainly kept my spirits high from start to finish.
Jennifer Sucevic writes well with an easy flow to her writing. She provides her characters with wit and charm within their dialogues and personalities. I will definitely be reading more from her. One minor slip up that I can’t ignore was the number of spelling errors and/or choice of homophones. Just bugs the heck out of me when a simple edit should catch these silly and avoidable errors.
This one still gets a high recommendation on entertainment value though.
Overall, this book wasn't the smut fest I thought it would be. Actually it was very tame compared to the second book. Maybe the author decided to throw loads of sex in the second book, but this book was actually pretty good until the ending. I loved Roan and all the facets of him. The fact no one took the time to get past his amazing good looks, called him on his shite and listen to him to discover he's quite smart other than Ivy made this book stand apart. Roan's father being gay changed his entire world when he was 14. In his words, he started getting into fights and banging every girl/woman he could in high school and college to counteract people making fun of him. Ivy isn't someone I felt close to, I think the main characters in this series are very weak women. Vi in the second book. I know being sexually attracted to someone doesn't make you a blubbering incoherent mess 24/7. Ivy being a ballet dancer was an interesting subplot and the idea she was going to forgo her shot with the Cincinnati Ballet Company to stay with Roan at Barnett was completely ludicrous. Roan broke up with her to make it easier for her even though it was killing him. His decision to go pro allowed him at the end to sign with the Cincinnati Bengals in order for them to stay together. Although I like the idea of it, rarely is it that simple. I'm glad the couple got to be together, but it just didn't feel as fluid as the rest of the book was. 3 stars it is. Happy reading!
I loved this book! I have to admit that the bad boy football player who falls hard for the girl who couldn't be bothered to look at him are favs of mine. But this one had a great plot outside of that story line too. Roan King may be a manwhore that is a magnet for everyone-be it guys who want to impress him or girls that want to have sex with him-but he is smart, and polite and a good guy. Ivy didn't have to change him-he was always a decent guy but he's about to be drafted to the NFL and he avoids relationships and dating because he keeps his eye on the prize. Sex yes, commitment-no.
Ivy is a strong character who is talented and smart and has a great head on her shoulders. She doesn't fall lightly for Roan, but of course when she does-it's a hard fall. This is a sexy, witty read and I enjoyed every chapter.
Sooo the cover is pretty gross--- dude, chill with the breast cuppage. I mean, really? AND it's that couple that is on every NA book out there, buuuut... I fell in love with it and couldn't put it down! It was hilarious and although it falls into the generic 'hot douche guy changes his ways for the right girl' plot, at least the girl wasn't the typical hot nerdy tutor. Ivy was confident and had her own swag. The relationship was gradual. The tension was great, and sex scenes weren't over the top. Def a solid NA that was so much fun to read!
I feel like this author writes the same book all over again. The MMC is always a beefy jackass who has lots of bimbo women offering casual sex because he is hot and sporty. The FMC hates him at first except when she lusts after him. Then she finds out that he is not just a dumb jock, and then they have to figure out how to be together after college.
But well, here I am, reading the same story all over again. So I suppose I was entertained.
Roan is a gorgeous man, with brains, the body of a god, and fantastic athletic ability. And the KING of Barrett campus. He is looking to be drafted by the NFL before finishing his degree.
Ivy is returning from studying abroad in Paris. Her bestie Lexi is waiting at their new apartment at Barrett college. She is a very talented dancer and looking to be a professional dancer.
The 2 have a crazy first encounter and end up being partners on a class project together. Ivy can't stand Roann and his bigger than life ego she thinks is attached.
The 2 form a sweet friendship with tons of sexual tension. They cross the barrier into a relationship which takes Roan off the market for his normal one nightstands. Roan is not sure he is the relationship guy but I by occupies part of his brain and he cannot stop thinking about her.
The 2 have big dreams for careers ahead and they may not be headed in the same direction but they are determined to make it work.
Sweet story with a little drama, lots of sexual tension and some big life lessons.
Tropes : ✨ new adult ✨ mmc is a player ✨ sports romance
King of Campus was my first book by Jennifer, and I overall enjoyed the book. There was a lot of inner dialogue throughout the story that really took away from the plot at times, and often found myself skimming through pages looking for more conversations between the characters. Overall I did really like the story, I was looking for a playboy college athlete type of vibe in a book and I def got one :)
Sometimes I piss myself off by liking dumb ass romance crap. I didn't hate this, and I liked that the female main character wasn't a doormat. However, I thought it was super lame that in the beginning she didn't just tell what's his face to not touch her if she hated him so much...AND then, I had a big problem with the fact that he didn't keep his hands to himself when he could clearly see she didn't like him and was not comfortable with him touching her. Did she come right out and tell him to stop touching her? No, but I still was not okay with the way he would just touch her. After they became friends then whatever, I guess it got sort of cute but I'm just kind of sick of the same super slutty guy as a main character. Is that even real life? I mean I typically don't hold people to much of a standard because well, I hate most people, ha. And not to slut shame, but are guys really THAT promiscuous? I guess I'd like main characters that weren't such extremes..I did appreciate that for once the girl wasn't some totally clueless super innocent virgin. I think I'm rambling now and I'm not sure what my point is anymore...
A mish mash of some of my favorite College themed romances in one makes for a entertaining, enjoyable and fun read. A likeable heroine and one who goes after her dreams. A football playing hero popularity no bounds and full of potential. Roan at first is your typical hotshot jock but when you see him beyond the lights and fame he's actually a good family guy and friend, smart to boot. Unlikely friends but they had good banter and chemistry.
The chapters were short but full of story and good build up of the story. A great start and effort for a author and book I've never heard of. I'm hopeful for a the possibilities and a little tweaking and editing it will be even better.
The book was OK and pretty much monotonous. Is it always necessary to have a traumatic childhood in these stories?like the mother died, divorced parents and all that shit.Plus, I just hate the fact that it is described over and over that how handsome the guy is! It was pretty much annoying...like,Ok I get it the guy is very handsome that every other girl of the college is after him,but no one is that lusty that evry time the guy would come in front of you, you'll start obsessing over it...Come ON!!!!
This book was a refreshing read of taking your time and getting to know someone and falling in love. Follow your dreams, fall in love and be true to yourself are some of the points this story pushes throughout the story. Roman and Ivy are wonderful separate and better together. All the character is the book work perfectly together making the story well rounded. Great read!!!
Accidentally coming across this book I figured it sounded like something Id like. And I really really did. King of Campus is a blend of some of my favorite NA/College/Sports Romance books and I just loved it.
I feel like some may have underrated this book. This book was an easy addictive read. Sure there were flaws, but they were ones I am totally willing to overlook.
Quick Info Standalone/Cliffhanger?: Standalone Part of a Series?: Yes ---------------------------------- Meeting the Characters Roan King Ivy ---------------------------------- What happens? Ivy is a dance student just come back from a year in Paris, she accidentally bumps into Roan and spills all over his shirt. Running away and trying to forget the beautiful stranger she bumped into she finds him chasing her assuming she did it on purpose to get him to sleep with her. She immediately changes her mind about him and is further annoyed when she finds him in her apartment when she gets back with her roommate and her boyfriend. Roan knows he should stay away from Ivy she isn't his usual type preferring girls with a fuller figure instead of rake thin and preferring to have one night stands instead of a relationship. However something about Ivy has him hooked and he can't seem to leave her alone or get her out of his head. Final thoughts People on the cover don't match the descriptions in the book; I don't mind that too much but it is kind of weird. Not something I find that uncommon with these sort of romances for the models in the cover to not match the characters. This was a good read for the most part, its not smashing it out of the park for me but I did still enjoy reading this. I was frustrated with parts that I won't spoil but it seemed very forced to try and create controversy but then it suddenly works out in the end. I did sooooooo feel for Ivy in terms of her dad. I was so on board with her feelings I had to take a few deep breaths I appreciate the author for not sweeping it under the rug and showing an actual conversation to resolve the issues between Ivy and her dad and his family. A lot of authors seem to just wave a magic wand and its fixed, but this book took the time to show a conversation about it. Would I read again?: Probably wouldn't be seeking it out but I wouldn't mind. Would I read this author again?: Yes
