When a pair of would-be assassins ambush Somerton County Deputy John Lee Quarrels on a dark, lonely road late at night, it is only their ineptness and his quick thinking that saves his life. Wounded and disoriented, John Lee must make it through the forest on foot to find help, never knowing if his attackers are coming back to finish the job.
Soon tongues are wagging all over Somerton County and the rumor mill is in high gear with speculation about who might be behind the attack. Was it someone he had arrested in the past? Hitmen hired by a drug lord? A spurned lover? A jealous husband? A vengeful ex-wife? Or was it the richest man in town, out for revenge over John Lee killing his son?
As John Lee recovers from his injuries, two investigators from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, as well as Somerton County deputies, are investigating the possibilities and trying to get to the truth of the matter before another attempt is made on his life, which might be more successful.
Before the story ends, ugly truths are revealed about people from all walks of small town life, and the guilty must pay a heavy price.

When two men tried to kill a deputy things turned bad for them. John Lee was in the hospital for a while, but he survived finding out who paid these men to kill the deputy was an adventure.
I really enjoyed when the author went back-and-forth between the killers and the story. I like hearing both sides of a story.
THEORIES ABOUND IN THIS ONE THE WHOLE TOWN THINKS THEY REALLY KNOW WHO HURT JOHN LEE. I'VE READ ALL "THE BIG LAKE SERIES" (there's only one left) AND NOW THIS BEING #11 IN "THE JLQ SERIES". I SURE HOPE #12 IN THE JLQ SERIES "JACK POT" WILL BE OUT SOON. I THINK IN ALL THE JLQ SERIES THIS ONE HAD THE STRANGES ENDING OF ALL. ;D I TRULY LOVE THIS AUTHOR AND ENJOYED READING BOTH OF THESE SERIES.
This is the 10th or 11th book in John Lee series that I have read. Interesting storyline with an attempt made to kill John Lee. The identity of the mastermind behind this attempt is a complete surprise, coming out of nowhere. By the way, quite a few editorial errors continue to exist.
Nick is a very favorite writer. His Fifty books are very hard to put down. I have been a fan for over ten years and I'm still waiting for the next book to appear.
Poor John Lee just can’t catch a break. No sooner is he shot and left for dead than it aLl starts to unravel around him. But good police work and a couple of dumb criminals wrap things up nicely, if not as expected.
I have read all of the series Mr Russell has written and enjoyed them all. I love this series with its crime solving interlaced with family and personal relationships. Great story kept me up.late to finish it.
Great reading, fantastic story line, page turner, couldnt put textbook down, really enjoyable, enthralling as a retired LEO really enjoy reading all of Nick Russell series best of the best.
A great storyteller, no question about that. But what is going on with all the repetition and extraneous material that distracts the reader's attention and interest? Please consider tightening these stories so that they grab and hold until you release us.
For me this is the best Nick Russell book to date. He has you leaning one way and then hits you to another direction. Very well done. I suggest you read his books in sequence then it will be easier to understand.
Whoa! Don’t mess with the wrong woman. As usual the Nick Russell twist has reared its ugly head. Just getting better as the series continues. Thanks again for great reading enjoyment.
