Sasaki and Peeps (Light Novel), Vol. 3: Psychic Battles, Magical Girls, and Death Games Can’t Contend with Otherworldly Fantasy

Rate this book
As always, Sasaki and his pet bird (and otherworld sage) Peeps continue to leap across worlds, trading goods for a profit. Thanks to a little help from Futarishizuka, they've found a way to exchange otherworld valuables for modern currency, and Sasaki has been studying up on magic, making him unstoppable against psychics and magical girls. All that's left is to make as much money as they can, retire, and start relaxing—but that won't be so easy. In Peeps' world, the dispute over succession begins in earnest, and back home, the psychic battles never stop. Not to mention Sasaki's neighbor, who is caught up in an angels-vs-demons death game. As worlds collide, Sasaki’s in for even more chaos!

It's only been a few books since I read volume 2, but i needed to get back into the fray with Sasaki and peeps and read volume 3, and thankfully, i was not disappointed with this volume.

As before, this book is broken into two main locations, our world, and the other world. Throughout the three volumes, i've actually found OUR world's story to be far more interesting than the other world's. The reason is because, whenever he heads out into the other world, most of the things that are focused on are trade politics, and honestly...it gets a little dull at times, and i end up skimming through the book when this happens.

I don't know whether this is a one off or what, but I hope the author got some feedback from his readers that people enjoyed the "our world" side of the story WAY more than the other world.

On our side we have Magical girls, Angel/Demon battles, and rogue psychics, while on the other side there's...trade politics. So yeah, this side is much better. Not only that, but pretty much every character we care about is on this side.

This volume really starts to lean into the fact that all the younger girls have a big crush on Sasaki (the high school student/coworker as well as the next door neighbor) and i think even the old lady in the young body is starting to get closer to him as well (although that development is slower and more natural). And of course Sasaki is 1000% oblivious and doesn't want anything to do with any girl that's not of age since he's a good guy. But i gotta say, man, lotta girls with daddy complexes in this one. like whoo boy.

A lot of stuff actually happens in this one when we're in our world, and i'm all for it. I like the interactions with the neighbor, the coworker, and the older lady a lot with Sasaki. all the scenes are fun and interesting and the characters are all different enough that i always have fun with them.

Weirdly enough, the character i actually probably like the LEAST of the entire series is Peeps. i'm not really a fan of the bird. The way he acts, his mannerisms...eh? I don't really like him very much. With his "Magical sensei but trying to be cute since he's a bird" thing..meh? I REALLY like Sasaki, but peeps, ironically i could do without. Also, i don't really like demon boy that teams up with next door neighbor. i've never liked his kind of character and he isn't really that much better in this volume from volume 2.

I have to say i actually don't know where this series is going. 9/10 times when i read a series i can basically figure out where the plot is heading, but this one i'm completely lost. they throw so much at you from magical girls to demon wars, to psychics, that i really don't know where this plot is going, but either way, i'm all here for it.

When it comes to romance, i also don't know where it's going. it could go SEVERAL ways and i'm not sure which way they're going to go. If i HAD to make a guess, i would probably say he would get together with older psychic lady? or MAYBE with his coworker if she like, gets stuck in the other world for a few years and ages up? Like, this is one of the few times i honestly don't know which girl he's going to end up with and i'm actually kind of impressed with that. It's rare i can't figure out who's going to end up with who. I have SOME guesses, but i could be 100% wrong.
If i had to make a preference, i would say..... ex-evil coworker girl, but i'd be fine with the rest too if they were aged up in like a time skip or other world time jump or something to make them like 18+. it's rare that i go "yeah you know what? any girl will do" but Sasaki and peeps manages to do this and i'm actually impressed with that. So yeah honestly any girl route you want to go as long as you age them up, go for it. i'll be on board for whoever.

In total, already bought volume 4 and am super looking forward to reading it. Love this series, keeping the truck rolling and here's hoping it keeps being as good as it has been. But maybe....just a LITTLE less other world/peeps and a little more focus on the characters back in our human world? K thanks.
