'til death do us part'

She Runs... Towards The Fire

She has to steal her own gold blood from the confines of The Emblem's labs.
She is ruthlessly hunted by many assailants sent by Queen Jakura that have one agenda: To Kill Her.
She is Aurora Harris of Navajo City, and she is seventeen years of age.

Navajo City is led by the wicked and merciless Queen Jakura. Aurora has never liked the aspect of Jakura in leadership, but she rarely thinks twice about it – that is, until the Queen decides to carry out an experiment that could be the death of the world.

Tired of sitting on the sidelines and eager for an adventure, Aurora and two of her friends carry out a plan to stop Jakura from going through with her experiment. It doesn't work out how they expected and they have to flee to Itchikan City under the comfort of a generous stranger – unaware that the Queen will stop at nothing to get them back so she can deal with them properly. Alliances form and so do foes, and soon Aurora finds herself on the verge of discovering the real reason why the Queen is trying to hunt her down.

Overall, I think this book was good, despite the small things I had problems with (writing more than anything).

The only problems I had was little bits of writing, such as the use of the word also being used a little too much. Nothing I can't get over though.

I found the main love interest to be done reasonably well, it wasn't insta-love at least, so is an improvement from other people's work.

I think there is potential with this series and expect the authors abilities will gradually improve.

Aurora Harris is an icon and she is, undoubtedly, the moment.

I knew about this story because I had the wonderful opportunity to speak with Bin beforehand about his ideas and his amazing characters, and I am so stoked to finally have read his story! This book is a whirlwind of action and emotion, of quirky characters and the fun (and most times dangerous) scenarios that they find themselves wrapped up in. This book truly is an adventure from the first page to the very last. Coupled with a tragic love triangle that absolutely broke my heart and an evil plot by a ruthless and mysterious Queen, this book really has it all. I am so incredibly proud of Bin for his perseverance and the work he put into this book. I can feel his passion through the characters, and I know that whatever he has planned for the next book, it's going to be crazy.

My favorite part about this book was the found family; these character have been through so much, yet they find peace and love and warmth in each other and that is such a beautiful thing. This book discusses grief, friendships, relationships, heartbreak, and discovering who it is you want to be. Aurora is not only in a battle with the tryannical forces around her, but also with the new feelings inside of her as she begins to cement who she is. And I know she is going to continue to grow and flourish in the next Itchikan book and even the next!

The plot did get convoluted at points and it was a bit hard to keep up with the large cast of characters that keeps getting added on to, but their distinct personalities and funny dialogue made it worth it. Bin clearly has a passion for over the top, larger than life dystopian stories. And I can't wait to see what he has in store for us Itchikan fans next!

Four stars.

Aurora might be one of the strongest characters I've read in a long while, she's bold and unafraid to keep fighting for what matters, all the while having so much heart for the people surrounding her—a lot of these characters do. It's one of the central structures of this book, and I adore it so heavily

There's many details to this dystopian world to unpack: new themes, new rules, and all their risks. As you discover each of them, you're gripping to know more, which is perfect for a fast-paced novel full of adventure 🥹 (and heartache omlll)

Itchikan is a wonderful debut novel, and I'm so curious for its second instalment!! I just know I'm not gonna know what's coming 😭❤️‍🩹

(younger me would've loved this so so much)

Itchikan by Bin Userkaf is a bold, youthful foray into a dystopian world. It brims with promise and has such a unique vision. Written by a remarkably talented young author who champions Black literature, the story centers on seventeen-year-old Aurora, whose desperate journey in a dystopian world feels like it was plucked straight from an anime. I can easily imagine this story being adapted into a cartoon that would resonate powerfully with younger audiences.

That said, while the narrative's ambition and the author’s engaging style shine through, there are some shortcomings. Certain scientific elements are not well explained, leaving me wondering if they were meant to be magical vs sound science. Additionally, the characters, full of youthful energy, tend to blur together, and the pacing is inconsistent, making the world-building feel a bit chaotic and hard to follow.

Overall, Itchikan is a promising, energetic story with an inspiring vision. Despite its challenges, it offers a fresh perspective in a dystopian setting and is sure to captivate its intended younger audience. I wish Bin Userkaf all the success, and I’m excited to see how his writing evolves in the future.
