I was originally between a 4 and 5 on this but realized my hesitancy for a 5 was my own hangups and not the author's writing. The author accomplished exactly what was intended in each story from gross-out gagging to creepy to uncomfortable. Some stories I was intrigued, some I was nauseas. I liked the span of time for each story and the attention to detail. Interested to see more from this author.

I was not sure what I was expecting from Fang Fiction: Vampire Horror Stories, by L.M. Kaplin. Well, I guess that is not entirely true. I expected vampire horror stories. I mean, this book tells you what it is right in the title. What the title does not tell you is that these are less short stories and more like written snapshots of a moment in vampire history. Mr. Kaplin is able to create not only a story, but the sense of back story and future potential caught in a single moment of time. I, as a reader, found this engaging, but also frustrating, as with all the best short stories, because I was left wanting more. More about the character, more about that moment in time. It was the most delicious feeling of frustration a reader can experience. My thoughts on the stories in this book.

The Golden Tomb: My lesson learned “A person can’t trust insane, blood covered ibexes when wondering around in the dessert. “

The Revenant: My lesson learned “Don’t be a smart-ass punk who thinks they know everything just because you managed to live past your 16th birthday without dying.”

The Vampire of Notre -Dame: I did not learn any lesson from this retelling of the famous French gothic tale.

The Lonely Road: My Lesson learned “Being a vampire hunter is a thankless, friendless job, which I am not qualified to do.”

Born Again: The scene with the tampon, just ewww, but that last line more than made up for it.

Tourist Trap: Every hotel in the region formally known as Transylvania is not going to be like the hotel in the movie Transylvania 6-5000. Is it bad that I still think the idea of a vampire hotel is awesome and I would totally be sucked (unintentional pun) into staying in one. I’m absolutely, without question going to end up as vampire chow!

Free Lunch: Please give blood. According to the Oneblood.org site“Each whole blood donation has the potential to save up to three lives.”But the logo from this site reminded me of the logo described in the book. Creepy!

Blood Spotter: OK, the vampire invasion will be brought to you on a podcast.

Factory Farm: The inevitable conclusion when a superior force invades a lesser one. There are a lot of indigenous people on the Earth that understand that concept.

V.E.T.H.: “The Haves” never change, be they human or vampire.

In conclusion this book is getting all the stars and probably deserves more.

This is a fangtastic collection of stories, each with a different take on Vampirism and ranging from centuries ago, to present day and on into the future! I enjoyed every story and my standouts were… BORN AGAIN, BLOOD SPOTTERS & FACTORY FARM!

Here are a few words for each story….

*THE GARDEN TOMB* Fleeing the advancing army, Athan and his daughter find themselves alone in the desert and struggling to survive! Athan feels a weird kind of kinship with an Ibex they meet along the way and he will do anything to save his daughter! Gross, horrifying and sad.

*THE REVENANT* Every month, on the Full Moon, the inhabitants of Wharram Percy partake in a ritual, a sacrifice to The Revenant himself! But Roger has his suspicions and looks into it a bit further, maybe a bit too far! Haunting!

*THE VAMPIRE OF NOTRE DAME* Crowds have gathered for an execution in the main square of Notre Dame Cathedral. Full of morbidly curious onlookers it's not going to be like any normal execution… A cool take on the story of Quasimodo!

*THE LONELY ROAD* Gene McGrath is a Vampire hunter, it's a sacred duty passed down through his family, and he's about to pass it on. But to who? A fun look at things from the Vampire Hunters POV..

*BORN AGAIN* William wakes up from a weird dream, in a graveyard, not knowing how he got there! Once home again, he goes to bed and the vivid dream continues. An eerie, brilliant transition into a Vampire story with a brutal twist! 🖤

*TOURIST TRAP* The Lund family are off to Bran Castle in Transylvania for their vacation.Their son Jeremy's dreams are about to come true….or are they really nightmares?! Horrifying..

*FREE LUNCH* Jeff gets an offer of free food in exchange for donating blood. Jeffs not one to pass up on free food, or the opportunity to spend time with his office crush! But will he live to regret his decision? A modern day Vampire tale..

*BLOOD SPOTTERS* This is written as transcripts from a podcast, a Vampire Hunters podcast. Are Steve and Jerry about to expose the truth about Vampires? Is that a good move? This was fun yet scary, and I love how it linked with other stories in this collection!

*FACTORY FARM* Welcome to The New Way, we don't talk about The Old Way anymore, The Old Ways are just whispers now, heard from cage to cage. Humans are now slaves to the Vampires, cattle, there for the breeding and feeding. Most are resigned to the fact that this is their life now….until the very end! Brutal, melancholic and beautifully dark. 🖤

*V.E.T.H.* Alec has a very high profile girlfriend Elise, and he enjoys sharing the limelight with her, but she is very used to getting her own way and when you don't agree on the same things, those things can get very messy….

*ODE TO DEATH* A sad, heartfelt poem to end the collection! 🖤🖤

Beautifully written collection of vampire tales. Each one takes place in a different time leading up to the final story in the future.
The Vampire of Notre Dame made me cry, it had a lot of heart.
You don't know it at first, but all of these stories are connected and they are brought together brilliantly. I loved every single story. Each one is unique and will capture your imagination.

I’ll start this by saying that I read horror/thrillers almost exclusively, though I am not a huge fan of the vampire subgenre. They are typically too romanticized for my liking. Fang Fiction, L M Kaplin’s debut release, is the exception proving the rule. It is a collection of short stories all involving vampires and I loved it. You’ll go on a journey through three millennia, from over 900 years before Christ all the way into the 22nd century. I love fiction that revolves around history and while this book isn’t historical fiction; it does have that vibe in the early stories. There is even a tale featuring Victor Hugo’s famous fictional character, Quasimodo. The stories are quick, flow well and the author immerses you in every scene. While each story stands on it own, they are connected as well. The book provides a larger story on top of the individual shorts. I highly recommend Fang Fiction and look forward to Kaplin’s future work.

Don’t worry if you’re squeamish; there is, of course plenty of blood, but no unnecessary gore.

The garden tomb
A father does everything he can to protect his daughter, but in the end, he couldn’t protect her from himself.

The Revenant
An interesting look into small town myths and legends, and what happens when they turn out to be true.

The Vampire of Norte Dame
A different take on our favorite hunchback and how he came to be.

The Lonely Road
Our first vampire hunter. This one played out nicely. No extensive back story, just a glimpse into the life of a vampire slayer.

Born Again
A transition story! One part was disturbingly similar to Daniel Volpe’s Strawberry Shortcake 🤮 And that last line lol.

Tourist Trap
A spooky Romanian castle in the 80s offers the “Dracula experience” to a family eager to play along. They should’ve just went to the Bahamas.

Free Lunch
How lovely modern technology must be for a vampire. Of course they would get into the blood drive business. A nice take on how they recruit new vampires.

Blood Spotters
Vampire Podcast. Hell yeah.

Factory Farm
A grim look into a future where vampires prevail. What an unnerving fate for the main character.

V. E. T. H.
Vampires for the Ethical Treatment of Humans. Had it really come to this?

Ode to Death
Vampire poetry!

These stories were well written and each one was just as long as it needed to be. No unnecessary backstories, just “this is what’s happening right now”, which was perfect for this collection. I like how each story progressed in time, and how some of them were tied together.

This book has ten short stories and an ode about vampires. Basically, it is like a historical story on how vampires came to be, and where they came from, to the future when vampires are known across the world. Starting in Jerusalem 969 BC and ending in an underground city in the year 2115. It is broken down into ten stories, all with when and where the vampires surface.

Normally I like to take each story and give a little blurb about it and how much I enjoyed them, but the stories in this book are hidden gems that you need to read.

Kaplin is great at world building and character development. The first story, The Garden Tomb, is a perfect example of how well Kaplin can describe a world that is easy to visualize. With the stories The Vampire of Notre Dame and Factory Farm, Kaplin writes with a strong emotion, having you feel the pain and suffering of the individuals in the story. Every story gets better and better. The Ode To Death at the end of the book, is definitely a fun ending.

This is a collection of vampiric tales, told through the ages. I was going to give this 4 stars because it takes A LOT for me to give 5 stars but the more I think about the stories, the more I feel it deserves the full whack ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This has been on my tbr pile for ages and I'm sorry it took me so long to get to it! Starting in ancient times and leading right through present day and into the future, Kaplin presents us with varying scenarios from a multitude of perspectives and it's a phenomenal experience! All of the stories are solid but some are strong enough that I'd kill to read a full length novel around them! The writing is great, it doesn't try to be lyrical and there is no sweeping prose, but I felt involved in each tale and I empathised with many of the characters. If you put Dracula, Fright Night and Tender is the Flesh into a blender, Fang Fiction is the end product. If it's on your TBR pile, don't wait like I did, bump it up the stack and enjoy!

This is a wonderful book about vampires over the centuries. You follow a time line over several centuries into the past and get a glimpse of a future that vampires rule. The stories are well-crafted and well written. Kaplin does a great job bring the stories together. I don't typically like short stories, but I highly recommend this collection!!

What a great collection of vampire stories that take you on a trip through time. Just like its description, this book uses different lenses to capture stories of our favorite legendary fanged monsters.

My favorite stories were Tourist Trap, The Lonely Road, Blood Spotters, and Born Again. In that order! They were well developed for such quick reads and incredibly entertaining. Tourist Trap and The Lonely Road could easily be expanded into novellas. I would love that, personally.

I rated this collection a 4 out of 5 stars after rating each story and finding the median, and I think a 4 is a great rating while being well-deserved! Here are the ratings I gave each story:

The Garden Tomb: 3 out of 5

The Revenant: 5 out of 5

The Vampire of Notre Dame: 4 out of 5

The Lonely Road: 5 out of 5

Born Again: 4 out of 5

Tourist Trap: 5 out of 5

Free Lunch: 5 out of 5

Blood Spotters: 4 out of 5

Factory Farm: 4 out of 5

V.E.T.H: 3 out of 5

Looking forward to see what L.M. Kaplin has in store for the future.

"Fang Fiction" by LM Kaplin. I was sent my copy in exchange for a honest review.

This collection surrounds around one theme: vampires. There are eleven stories total, all of them perfect for Halloween.

Out of these stories I chose a top three: "The Vampire of Notre-Dame", "Free Lunch", and "Factory Farm".

"The Vampire of Notre-Dame" was by far my favorite. It was the most creative take I've ever read on Quasie Moto and Esmerelda. I appreciated that a lesser known Disney story was focused on as well because I feel most times the Disney princesses are who steal the show. "Free Lunch"will guarantee I never look at blood donation the same again and "Factory Farm" was the scariest story of them all. Given today's world, it's not so far fetched to believe one day we'll be the weaker race.

The story "Born Again" also has an incredibly disgusting scene involving a tampon and I don't think I'll ever be the same 😅

“Always hungry, like a shark And only prowling, in the dark Watching your friends, wither away After they are gone, you must stay.”

Firstly, this book has fangtastic cover art! I want this as a stained glass window in my house!

We get a number of interesting tales that showcase the vampires in different eras and places.

Favourite stories:
Tourist Trap: A good old vampiric castle setting. Really glad they got Jeremy, seemed like an asshat. I wonder if Ashley survived and is now a vampire princess too?

Bloodspotters: We see some of the previous stories tie in and culminate in an intense showdown of humans vs vamp. Love the podcast style of story.

All in all a bloodcurdling collection!

Wow.
I read a lot of books and am normally not a huge fan of short stories but this was incredible. It took me so long to finish because I only read one at a time so it would last!
From the first story that leaves you cringing to the last beautiful ode, this book is a MUST READ for any horror fan, especially if you love vampires!
I am so excited to see what else comes from this author!

I don't really like short stories because I always want more and I didn't intend to read this all at once. The stories were too good not to read it straight through. The very first story made me want to vomit lol Definitely recommend this book!

We’ll this was a delicious bunch of vampire stories. Some of theses are more traditional tales as you might expect, and they were good, and others were a very different take on the vampire world. Quite unique and disturbing. I thoroughly enjoyed this and drank in the whole book quickly.

When you have such commonly used creatures as zombies and vampires in horror fiction, it's difficult to come across originality, but I have to say that L.M. Kaplin has nailed it with Fang Fiction.

This is a collection of short vampire stories set in different time periods, yet all seemingly set in the same universe.

With collections such as these, you often get a couple of weak entries, but that is not the case here. I liked them all, but particularly enjoyed The Revenant, Free Lunch, and Factory Farm, which I found particularly disturbing.

What a fun and delightfully bleak read this book was.
There is a good variety of stories in here and they're all pretty solid on their own, but when you look at the book as a whole they are far more than the sum of their parts and that's what made this book a true 5 stars read for me.

A great, short read for all sorts of fans of horror lit.

First of all, I prefer short stories over 300 pages long novels any day, any time. Secondly, Thanks to the author as I had the pleasure of beta reading this book. So I might sound biased but i loved how he incorporated the little things we suggested while this was still in Beta and ARC.

The stories are all self contained (except two, which can be read stand-alone but they're actually kind of sequels ) and really conscious regarding their length. The author (and I, as a reader) hates overt detailing, pages long descriptions and monologues that makes the reader bored to death. Nonetheless, the stories still managed to portray very vivid pictures of their respective worlds (and there were so many of them, believe me) in-depth. The characters are diverse and all worth rooting for.

This is a book I instantly liked in my first read and then kept searching for similar books to satisfy the craving.

I didn't really know what to expect going into Fang Fiction by L.M. Kaplin, but it ended up being an absolutely enthralling read! This short story collection essentially took me through the history of the evolution of vampires while also being a compilation of 10 short stories that were very well intertwined!

We started out in ancient Jerusalem with the birth of vampires and ended up with a futuristic world essentially dominated by vampires!

I felt that many of these stories were so well-written that I often forgot I was reading fiction...and it freaked me out even more with how real the stories felt. 😳

Fang Fiction definitely had everything I love in a short story collection and more. The only thing I disliked was that it wasn't long enough!! I am excited to read more by this author!

5 stars!

This is my 2nd book by L.M. Kaplin. I really enjoy his style, how he can suck me in with just one sentence is perplexing.

Fang Fiction is a collection of 10 short stories about Vampire's, however all the stories kind of entangle with one another in some way.

The 1st story starts at 969 BC then the stories go through time up to the last story ending at 2115 in Underground City.

Each story has either a Vampire origin, or continuation of being a Vampire, or even being a Vampire hunter, or victim.

I enjoyed each and every story in this collection. This is my 2nd short story collection back to back. I'm still not a lover of short stories, but these last two collections all interacted with each other and that kept my attention.

Bravo Mr. Kaplin, so far you're 2 for 2. I look forward to reading more of your work.

I like horror stories, but after reading fang fiction this author made me love horror. What a wonderful book. This was a great collection of short stories; makes you question if vampires are real. This a great read for fans of horror and if you have even the slightest interest in vampires then run don’t walk to pick up this book, I promise you won’t be disappointed. I rarely leave reviews; however, this book deserves every star possible, each short story leaves you wanting more, and I was sad when the end inevitably arrived, and I finished the book. This author did his research, and it shows. Keep those books coming. You have a fan for life!

I I really enjoyed the way this was done, it is a collection of vampire short stories with each story set in a different time, giving each story its own feel and a range of vampire stories, from the traditional vamp vrs villagers, a vampire hunter story, and some modern new aged vampires.

Don’t worry none of these vampires sparkle, there is a few brutal moments and one part about a delicious snack that almost made me gag, lol.

So If you like vampire stories, like Camilla, or the Strain, or even the tv series supernatural, I think you will like this.

I really liked the fact that we had so many diverse stories spanning from ancient times to a dystopic future. Most of them were well crafted and engaging. There were a few that I felt ended a bit abruptly, and I would have wanted a more fleshed out story, but overall the characters and the settings were interesting and it was a fresh take on the vampire mythos.

As a Romanian I very much appreciated the research done for the Bran castle story. It’s always exciting to see the perspective of a non native and how this continues to be a rich source of inspiration.

3.5 rounded to 4.

I was provided a copy of Fang Fiction in exchange for my honest review.

3.75 stars rounded up. Vampires are something I never get sick of reading about. Fang Fiction is a collection of vampire stories, each one taking place in a different place and time period, stretching from pre-history to the far future. No romanticized, lovey-dovey vampires here, just blood-thirsty killing machines - just the way I like them. This is a very fun, creative compilation and I look forward to reading more from L.M. Kaplin.

It's no secret that I'm not a huge vampire fan. I just feel like movies/ books have overdone their storylines, and there's rarely anything new to add.
This author added something new
I assumed this book was just short vampire stories. What I didn't know was that they're are separate stories, but in chronological order, telling a larger ongoing story
The first story, (969 BC) was not my jam at all. But then the tales were more recent. The. The next thing I know, I'm reading about the future. Very well done. 5 well deserved stars

It is hard to write or even read that which kills us, that hunts us, and haunts us. And Yet Kaplin has done it! Over 20 years of study of vampirism and yet here he is writing stories that FIT perfectly with vampires and how they were are and will be. True terror comes in these stories but can be read anywhere. We are not bogged down by lover interest or even Bram stoker Dracula trick replayed. We are give in Fang Fiction vampires as they are. If you love Vampires read this if you don't read it it doesn't stop being good. Worse yet you wonder ( good job Kaplin) if vampires are real...

I really like the timeline approach Kaplin took with Fang Fiction, but the writing could have been better. There was mixing up of tenses, often on the same page, which pulled me out of the stories. There were also several moments when Kaplin took odd logical leaps with which he expected us to keep pace, seemingly taking it for granted that readers were all familiar with his internal world and didn't need any set-ups or explanations.
