Dr. Bryce Chapman, an ER doctor who recently bent the law until it broke to protect his own family, finds himself in the crosshairs of a man doing the same thing. This man is one of the wealthiest in town and will stop at nothing to shield his daughter from the consequences of her actions. Lies and deceit are as ingrained in human psychology as the desire to protect one’s family. When these forces align, it spells disaster for anyone who stands in their way. Sins of the past resurface and force Bryce to do something he abhors in order to avoid prison. This task becomes more difficult when he must drop everything to rescue a friend in trouble. How could he know that in doing so, he was walking right into a trap?

Ridiculously bad. I read the first book in this series and it was okay, a few minor problems but readable. I almost quit reading this second book “Deception” about half way through. I don’t know how reading a book on Kindle differs from the printed version but the further into the book you go on Kindle the more numerous the mistakes are. Missing words and repetitive phrases. You don’t really need to read the first book because Mr. Hartman gives too much detail about it here in the second. I thought my Kindle erroneously jumped to a different book when we were “treated” to almost a full chapter about open marriage. Really? If all of this isn’t frustrating enough how about nonsensical scenes? Such as Dr.Chapman is at Emily’s apartment door, talks to her neighbor across the hall. Then the next thing you know he is telling the cop that he is on his way there and will meet him in 20 minutes. Mr.Hartman also likes to throw in the occasional obscure and unnecessary word like he got a new thesaurus for Christmas. The ending (yes, unbelievably I read the whole thing) feels like he just got tired of writing this crap and wanted to move on. I think I will too.

NOT the ‘Medical Thriller Series’ Promised by Amazon’s Headlines

I have mixed feelings about this book, and they’re trending towards this NOT being a very good series.

— Amazon bills this as a “Medical Thriller Series”, and while there is a medical environment included in the tale, and doctors and nurses and injuries that need treatment — it’s not much of a thriller, let alone a “Medical Thriller” — which I’d hoped would have a lot more science in it. Instead, there’s just implausible, second-rate hair-brained schemes that doctors find themselves in.

— For instance, this 2nd book picks up after the end of the 1st book, but strangely it jumps right into Insurance Fraud as an acceptable way for one of the doctors to help a killer financially support himself — and it doesn’t even come close to addressing the OTHER deaths caused by the killer.

— I think I feel the need to NOT continue the series, and my overall recommendation would be for others to not even start reading them.

I love Hartman's books. They are so full of twists and turns. I enjoy the medical diagnosis and workarounds for assessments and plans.
But Bryce is masterful at solving the scrapes he gets himself into. I cannot wait until the next book but fear this may be the last in the series.
Definitely read and enjoy the rollercoaster ride Hartman lets you ride - masterfully.

Now with book 2, I am becoming a big fan of Dr. Bryce. He seems to always get himself into trouble, but somehow finds his way out too. Great storyline and with being a position himself, it is much easier to know that yeah this really could happen and this is how it would be handled. Now on the book 3, the vengeance.

Captivating

Great book with an engaging storyline that keeps the reader captivated. Every twist and turn in the plot kept me eager for reading more. Can't wait to begin the 3rd book of this series. Well done.

Kindle Unlimited ebook. Still enjoying this series. Now so we’ll written but having worked in a hospital all my life I like seeing the hospital more realistic than in most books. Some suspension of disbelief but not bad. I’m growing to like the characters

I am normally not too nit picky when it comes to books and this still was a really good story. However, the grammatical and spelling errors in here were a little much. I still enjoyed it and would give it an overall 3.5/5 ⭐️

Not my favorite

First book was really good. This one felt rushed with so many typos and grammar problems. And, as a nurse myself, seeing HIPAA and then HIPPO in the next sentence almost made me stop the book.

I finished this book but had some misgivings about it. There was way too much cursing in it. I thought this series had higher values than this. Christian values. Doubt that I read this author’s books again.

I am enjoying these books! It is fun to share a series with my daughter and also having it take place in Indiana, my home state :) I got a kick out of a character eating at the Taxman Brewery - fantastic place!
