Soft Minimal: Norm Architects: A Sensory Approach to Architecture and Design

Rate this book
Building spaces of Norm Architects’ humane simplicity creates environments that feel as good as they look. Guided by ideas of wellbeing, the essence of Norm Architects’ style is richness focused by restraint, simplicity imbued with warmth, complexity heightened by order. Be it architecture, interiors, or furniture, Norm’s unique brand of soft minimalism speaks to the mind as much as the body, creating spaces for people. The first monograph by Norm Architects, Soft Minimal is their own curation of works that have made them key figures of Nordic design. It presents residential and commercial projects throughout Scandinavia, Italy and Japan as Norm reflect on Nordic traditions, modernist principles, and the importance of natural materials. Exploring a creative process that makes the visual speak to all senses, the book becomes insightful, inspirational, and deeply poetic.

I enjoyed the book, especially the visually pleasing photo gallery of their works, curated as the theorethic concept goes along. I can sum this book’s ideology to one of their paragraphs: “There is an awareness that each aesthetic choice will determine the emotions and behaviors of the users. The work is approached from the mindset of a set designer who understands that through form, composition, material and color, they are setting the stage for the act of life”.

What a beautiful, beautiful book. From cover to cover, the pictures, and the wisdom in its words are wonderful. For architecture and design lovers this is a delightful book to look over and over again.

Beautiful detailed images and curation of work by a design studio that has been very prolific over the last 15 years.

Unfortunately, the writing is absolutely dreadful; like they hired a perfume ad copywriter and gave them The Eyes of the Skin to brainlessly rephrase in painful, purple prose (the ‘Further Reading’ section at the back is pretty much your standard design/architecture school undergrad reading list). Worse, the writing has no bearing on the adjacent imagery and could have described by any number of similar designers or architects; it is so impersonal and completely divorced from anything like design process, client, post occupancy reflections or even who the team at Norm Architects are.

I get that this book is probably more of a collectible coffee table book for people to own, not to look too closely at, and also a monograph box for Norm Architects to check. If you are genuinely interested in their work, their website is 100x more informative.
