Fourteen short stories with a twist, Duck for Cover & Other Tales is filled with surprises.
The Yes Man is about a woman who looks after her elderly father with dementia, only to discover he still has life lessons to teach her. Living My Best Life tells the story of an aging rock star who finds his legacy lives on in a way he hadn't imagined. Thicker Than Blood is about the dilemmas caused by modern technology when a trio of siblings is asked to make the hardest decision of their lives. The Devil's Workshop is the story of a young man being scared straight from a life of delinquency by a clever probation officer and an ex-con.
Topical, relatable and just plain fun, these and many other stories in this collection deal with friendship, kinship and the complexities of the modern world, and are sure to leave you with a smile.

Duck for Cover & Other Tales by Barbara Venkataraman is a delightful collection of fourteen short stories! These stories revolve around friendships, family , community and so much more and touch upon varied themes such as revenge, love, deception and ageing among others. Some of these stories will surprise, some will make you laugh out loud and some will leave you pondering over the message they convey.
I absolutely loved this collection as a whole but will mention that “A Dish Best Served Cold” (we follow two warring neighbors as the tensions escalate) , “Duck For Cover” (a man’s unfortunate experience with the ducks roaming his neighborhood has ramification on all other aspects of his life), “The Yes Man” (a life lesson to a son from his father who is suffering from dementia),”The Devil’s Workshop” (detailing a juvenile offender’s experiences during his period of community service and restitution), “My Canadian Girlfriend” (a long-distance romance that ends not quite predictably) , “See You at The Movies” (a grandson’s tribute to his movie loving grandfather), “Brave New World” (cash or card?- an elderly woman’s dilemma) “Every Age All At Once” (an ode to lifelong friendships) are among my absolute favorites ( 5/5)! The story Living My Best Life (4/5) revolves around an aging rock star and his legacy. “I'll Drink to That”, “Whatever The Widget”, “Thicker Than Blood”, “That Daring Young Man” and ”From the Jaws of Victory” are also decent reads ranging between ratings of 3 to 3.5.
Overall this is a quick, entertaining read that is perfect for a change of pace between more serious reads or when you are craving a short light read that will make you smile. The stories are crisp, concise and very enjoyable. This is my first time reading this author’s work but definitely not my last.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of the book. All opinions expressed are my own.
4 stars for a book of short stories that can be read in an afternoon(78pp). Each story ends with a surprise. I especially liked the first story with a neighbor from hell--think dead skunks. Thanks to Barbara Venkatarman for sending me this eBook.
Duck for Cover & Other Tales is a wonderful short collection from a very funny author who always knows how to give her stories that extra punch. I've read most of Barbara Venkataraman's books and highly recommend them for their clever humor, well-drawn characters, and intriguing mysteries. In this new release, she's given us ~10 five-page tales involving people and animals. I must say, the opening revenge and skunk tale had my emotions running from shock to anger to smug to elated. Revenge can be such a delicious theme, and this piece was a delight. I also really enjoyed the story about a first date involving ducks. I would've been mortified but then again... one of the two was quite the fool. Definitely a great treat to read in between heavy novels as you'll get a few laughs and memories to keep you smiling throughout the day.
I love short stories! Perfect entertainment in just a few pages. One of my favorite authors has gathered a group on stories and compiled them into a wonderful book that is sometimes funny and sometimes heart-rending, but all are terrific!
This is a collection of 14 entertaining short stories. The stories themes very from someone’s karma catching up with them to someone seeing the overall picture which allows them to feel acceptance or peace.
A few of my favorite or the ones that stuck with me longer were…
See You At the Movies- This is about the relationship between a young man and his grandfather.
A Dish Best Served Cold- This is about a man who is miserable and he makes everyone around him miserable.
My Canadian Girlfriend-This one is a funny story about a girl who has met a guy through a dating app and is planning on meeting him IRL, however, her mother has some concerns.
I recommend this book for anyone looking for a quick entertaining read.
All thoughts and opinions are my own, and I have not been by anyone.
When Ms Venkataraman asked me if I’d like a copy of this book, I jumped at the chance. I’ve read and enjoyed just about everything Ms Venkataraman has published so far, and I enjoy short stories. This was a quick read, but I know that I will reread at least some of these stories. My absolute favourite of the fourteen was ‘My Canadian Girlfriend’ with its superbly fitting ending, closely followed by ‘Whatever the Widget’ and ‘The Devil’s Workshop’. Each story is different. Some touch on the complexities of life, others on difficult decisions and choices.
There’s humour as well, and a reminder that actions have consequences. Sometimes those consequences are life changing as in ‘A Dish Best served Cold’ and ‘Thicker Than Blood’.
These are definitely stories with a twist, and usually with a smile. Highly recommended.
In between reading novels, I love to fit in short stories every so often; bite-size tales the perfect size to read with a cuppa, or before you go to sleep at night. This is a gorgeously varied collection, each one better than the last and all written by an author who knows how to write and keep her readers happy. Exactly as described - 'topical, relatable and just plain fun', I'm so very happy to recommend Duck for Cover and all the other tales included - and not to forget the superb fun cover! A sparkling anthology which merits all five twinkling stars!
4 stars: A Dish Best Served Cold The Yes Man Thicker Than Blood The Devil's Workshop I'll Drink to That Whatever the Widget Every Age All At Once
3 stars: Living My Best Life From the Jaws of Victory Duck for Cover My Canadian Girlfriend See You at the Movies
2 stars: That Daring Young Man
This was a quick and fun read. There is humor, revenge, karma, grief, friendship, and family. They take place in various locations, mostly in the US. Some stories involve a short amount of time, and others take place over many years. There are stories for almost everyone to enjoy.
I’ve been a fan of Barbara Venkataraman’s work for years now, ever since reading the first of her Jamie Quinn cozy mystery series. Recently she began releasing volumes of 100 word short stories, which I also have enjoyed. Duck For Cover & Other Tales is another collection of short stories, but this time Barbara doesn’t limit herself to 100 words or less. The result is a collection of entertaining stories that are rooted in real life. You’ll find both laughter and karma in these stories.
The first story, A Dish Best Served Cold, is about revenge (as you may have guessed if you’ve read Moby Dick – or seen the movie Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan). It seems ridiculous at first but after reading in the news all the crazy things people do these days, it’s really not. The second story, The Yes Man, reminds me of my best friend’s father who became addled after his second wife died and became easy prey to telemarketers. The story in the title, Duck For Cover, reminded me of my parents’ experiences with Muscovy ducks when they moved near St. Petersburg, FL – and it made me laugh out loud. I could go on about each story in this collection, but it’s best to read it for yourself.
As I’ve come to expect from Barbara’s works, the writing and editing are both excellent. Barbara’s writing style has a way of inviting you in like you’re an old friend embarking on a new journey with her. She doesn’t waste words – there is an efficiency to her writing that allows for a greater focus on the creativity. Her books are fast reads because you don’t want to put them down. This is especially true with Duck For Cover – “I’ll read just one more story,” you’ll tell yourself. Before you know it, you’ll have read all the stories. So do yourself a favor, get Duck For Cover, enjoy it, then check out Barbara’s other works. Myself, I’m looking forward to the next Jamie Quinn cozy mystery, but in the meantime, I enjoy these collections of short stories.
I received an advance review copy of Duck For Cover from the author, and I am happy to leave this review voluntarily.
A collection of 14 short stories about different aspects of life’s journey from the best-laid plans to competitive businessmen to commemorating friendship to revenge that actually isn’t sweet to celebrating a life well-lived and dearly loved. My favorite was "See You at the Movies."
The stories are well-written with realistic scenarios. The narrative and dialogue are characterized by voices that seem familiar as though a relative, neighbor, friend, or colleague is sharing a story at a family dinner, at work, or from a dating experience. The collection reminded me of the author’s ease in writing short stories succinctly as previously demonstrated in "Holiday Shorts: Flash Fiction" as she met an editor’s challenge to create a story with a holiday theme in exactly 100 words.
The cover art reflects the title of one of the short stories and is admittedly cute. When I first viewed the cover art on social media without a collection description I thought perhaps it was a children’s book and did not investigate further. Later I decided to move beyond first impressions. I enjoyed each of the stories but mixed feelings remain about the cover design. So, don’t judge a book by its cover, and enjoy the collection.
Note: Language in the 1st story may be offensive to some readers.
Duck for Cover & Other Tales: A Collection of Short Stories by Barbara Venkataramana is a beautiful collection of witty short stories that would surely leave a big smile on every reader's face.
I loved each and every one of the short stories in this collection. Each one of these fourteen stories was funny, sweet, heart-warming and introspective stories that felt really light but, in reality, had so much to say in the deeper sense that only a very skilled writer could have pulled off without making the stories over-bearing and that's exactly how Barbara Venkatramana did it. The writing felt great and had a good flow making this book a very fluid read. The characters in each of the stories felt realistic and I was able to feel a connection with them instantaneously in piste of the stories being so short.
I would definitely recommend this book to all short story readers. This collection has a LOT to offer! ________________________
"Duck for Cover & Other Tales" is a wonderful collection of 15 short stories by Barbara Venkataraman. The tales will tell of family, relationships, betrayal, aging, revenge, karma, saying goodbye and more. Some will make you laugh or smile and some may draw a tear. Some will make you pause and others just shake your head at what some people may do. There is something for everyone in this book, so kick back, put your feet up and enjoy some very creative tales from the very talented Ms Venkataraman!
If you are looking for some quick short story reads, this will fit the bill. These are a variety of topics and perhaps some life lessons. The stories are entertaining and sometimes thought provoking. It’s a good and enjoyable quick read. I received this book as a gift from the author, but my opinion is my own.
I loved this book of short stories. They were all interesting and quick reads. Barbara Venkataraman writes excellent stories that keep you engrossed from beginning to end. I highly recommend this book!
This quick read is fourteen short stories that have a great point! Each is a situation where one may get their comeuppance, or one may find a new leash on life, and be careful about those tables because they can turn.
Some of my favorites:
Living My Best Life centers on a musician living in the past while feeling sorry for himself and then realizing there's a bigger picture and he's in it.
The Devil's Workshop is about second chances and the last resort. I loved how Noel got played in the best way.
My Canadian Girlfriend was relatable to me as a mother and worried about one's adult children with online dating. In this story, Chloe's mother fears her concerns are falling on deaf ears and takes matters into her own hands. She has a case of a guilty conscience about the fallout it will bring to her and her daughter's relationship. The surprise is on her!
This was an enjoyable read!
I received a complimentary copy, and I have voluntarily reviewed this book.
Life's journeys told in a variety of short stories to entertain and intrigue while leaving you with pondering thoughts! Different perspectives on a variety of thoughts that wind through family dynamics, friendships, frenemies, enemies and more! This author never fails to amaze me with the seemingly randomness of thoughts that she can compile together to make a collection of interesting stories that entertain me and make me ponder my life. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next!
A collection of some short stories. I like to read short stories between books. I have read some of this Authors other books which I also liked. This one is no different. I received this book to read and make an honest review. I can honestly say I enjoyed each story.
I loved this audiobook! It was fantastic. The stories range in time from 5 mins to 11 mins. Each story is funny. I found myself chuckling throughout the whole listen. If you want to listen to something in your car for a quick 1 hour drive, this audiobook is for you. Hats off to the author!!!
Duck for Cover & Other Tales — Barbara Venkataraman; Narrator: Emily M. Wilson (14 stories) Dec. 21, 2022
*The author invited me to listen to this audiobook for an honest review.*
This book is a collection of short story fiction pieces. Some of them are perfect for this format, and some of them felt like they were getting good when the story ends. However, they are all completely stories, so there is none that left me hanging. The stories are like sketches of people’s lives that I only got to visit for one important moment in their life.
The book starts off with a disgruntled Dad that gets his just desserts when he treats his son and next-door neighbor poorly. Some of the stories end with a drumroll punchline: dah-dah-dun. Then there are stories that end with more questions than answers. One story shows the power of change. A few were LOL funny. And one was downright poignant, with a breath-taking insightful ending.
The “chapters” are the title of each story. If I matched the above descriptions of the stories I am referring to, with the title, it wouldn’t have as much impact on the reader, so I choose not to tip my hand here.
I listened to the complete collection twice in one day. They are quick reads/listens and I played the audiobooks at a faster speed (1.8.) This collection showcases the writing ability of the author. There is so much variety in these 14 stories, that I wanted to listen to them again. I almost got whiplash in awe of the talent this writer has. She would tell a story and then jump to a totally different theme and back again.
I am thankful that the author reached out to me; I love short stories. None of these disappoint. None made me think I was wasting time. I never looked ahead. When it ended I was like: “already?”
I was given a copy of this audio book for free in exchange for an honest review.
I generally listen to audio books while I am doing other things (usually walking my dog). Since I was asked to write a review I wanted to make sure my mind did not wander and I missed something . . . so I listened to this twice. At a little under 2 hours this was easy to accomplish. Honestly due to the nature of these very short stories that probably wasn’t necessary. But I enjoyed them the second time as much as if not more than the first.
I generally don’t like shorter stories and essays but these were the exception to that rule. These were often very ironic stories/essays/whatever you want to call them. Some were more poignant than others but most were still funny.
There is little overlap between the stories (nothing at all obvious) but sometimes you get the feeling that the stories are somehow related in a way you just can’t put your finger on. I don’t know if that is because I’ve recently read through a few novels set in Florida that had a few vaguely similar stories in them or it was just my overactive imagination. The bottom line is that these were very enjoyable very short stories.
As far as the audio production value this was very good. Far better than I expected to be honest. I’ve absolutely listened to novels on the best sellers list that had worse readers/performances.
If you are looking for a quick read/listen give this a shot it’s quite enjoyable and it’s absolutely worth reading or listening to more than once.
I’m generally not a fan of short stories (because if I’m making an emotional commitment to a character, I want him or her to be around for a while), but this entertaining collection by Barbra Venkataraman might just make me a convert.
It contains 14 short stories about friendship and kinship with a twist. One of my favorites was “Living My Best Life,” the tale of an aging rockstar who finds his legacy lives on in a way he didn’t imagine. There’s also an interesting take on the ancestral DNA craze, “Thicker than Blood.”
The author has an eye for detail and an ability to create dimensional characters in just a few pages. I whipped through the book while on the gazelle at the gym, and that was some of the more enjoyable time I’ve spent on that piece of equipment. It left me wanting more.
This book would make an entertaining stocking stuffer, and is the perfect introduction to the author’s work (she also writes the excellent Jamie Quinn cozy mystery series about an attorney in south Florida).
Duck for Cover & Other Tales Earns 5/5 Emotional Journeys…Engaging Fun!
Snippets, bits and pieces, vignettes that needed to be shared! Barbara Venkataraman has compiled fourteen shorts with a wide range of themes, characters, and karmic consequences. She explores revenge and comeuppance, pay back and pay forward, and the dynamics of a myriad of relationships. Each tale is a well-written narrative with engaging dialogue to illustrate the multi-generational personalities and a multitude of emotions. I, too, had various reactions from a fist pump “Yeah!” to a gasp of relief, from a poignant tear to an audible giggle, from thanks karma to a “I want more” wish. All in all this set was an enjoyable read, short in length, but not short on entertainment, and exactly what I expected from Barbara Venkataraman!
Disclosure: I received an ARC from the author. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.
Duck For Cover & Other Tales: A Collection of Short Stories
This is a wonderful collection of super short stories. These are definitely meant for adult readers who want something short, but meaningful to read while waiting in a line or for an appointment. It is amazing how the writer is able to transport the reader inside of these vignettes that are mere pages long, but have the ability to make the reader consider situations from different perspectives. Most of these tales made me think, some made me smile, and a couple provoked a verbal reaction. This book will stay on my Kindle for a while just so I can return to these people and places again.
I received a copy of "Duck for Cover & Other Tales for the author. I would give this an almost five. The short stories covered many subjects. Child custody and skunks [poor skunks}, Ducks that invaded a duck hating person. {good revenge ducks}. Movie loving grandson and grandfather who could quoted lines from their favorite movies. {sweet tale} I could especially relate to Nora who only wanted to pay cash in stores and restaurants instead of ordering from her phone with a credit card {ugh i hate that too!} As any book that has essays or short stories, I have my favorites. I would recommend this book to others.
This is a fantastic collection of short stories! I’m very critical of short stories because I feel they miss some of the things I value most in a book, character development, scene setting, and story arcs. Writers of short stories must overcome that AND deliver a meaningful ending. Few writers can do this well. Venkataraman is one of them. At the end of every single one of these stories (and in the middle of some of them) I blurted out either a gasp or an “aw” or I laughed. That’s what I want a short storyline to make me do. This is a really fun collection, a super quick read. Definitely check this out!
"Duck for Cover & Other Tales" by Babara Venkataraman is another amazing anthology of short stories! This collection offers a variety of genres that will have you laughing, quaking in the knees, or sitting deep in thought.
One thing is for sure, there are stories for everyone to enjoy. Personally, my favourite is "A Dish Best Served Cold." What's better than some neighbourly revenge with a twist? I also enjoyed "My Canadian Girlfriend" for its cleverness and the fact the main character pulled off an act I would never be brave enough to do myself!
If you enjoy short stories, I highly recommend picking up this book. The stories are quick and simple and fun to read. You might even find yourself finishing the book in one sitting!
When I mark a book as ‘read’ in Goodreads, I always throw a glance at the ratings. I am curious to know whether the other readers felt the same about a story as I did and what made them like or dislike it.
When I looked at the results for this book there were already 9 ratings and I was not surprised to see they all gave a 5 star rating. I am happy to add a tenth one, because as per usual I am charmed by her books.
I started by reading her cozy mystery books and I loved them. I was a big fan. Nowadays she writes collections of short stories, some even as short as only 100 words.
This collection has no limit. They all had a different length and when you are familiar with her writing style, you know they are great.
When you start one of her stories, you never know where she will lead you. Sometimes though, gradually, I guessed the direction she was going to take. Other times I was totally surprised by the outcome.
As per usual her stories can be funny, suspenseful or even a bit creepy and she can talk to you about family, love, friends,…, but one thing they all have in common: a punchline.
Another very entertaining book by this author. 5 stars
This was dropped in my lap on the heels of a tedious self-imposed burden (I’d downloaded a free book that turned out to be a five-book commitment because OCD or whatever).
Normally, I might have reacted to a book of short stories with a “Wait a damned minute…” but this truly undid the heavier, highly repetitive series I’d just finished. These stories were vastly different from each other, usually evoking an “awww” moment at the end, and over so quickly that boredom wasn’t an issue. Best of all, I don’t think I was jerked out of any of it because of some shockingly illiterate misuse of words or punctuation, and felt no compulsion to scream for an editor who was obviously never employed.
These wonderful books of short stories by Ms. Venkataraman are always way too short for my taste because they are just so darn fun to read! And though a few of the stories are a little darker than her usual fare, I enjoyed them very much. In fact, bring on your bad self Barbara! Thank you to the author for reaching out to me. It's always a pleasure.
I’ve been reading Barbara’s books for years. Loved the Jamie Quinn cozy mystery series. I like short stories and thoroughly enjoyed this collection. Barbara has a way with words that conveys emotion. I enjoy her non fictional writings too. Highly recommend her work.
