The Nanny

I clutched baby Chloe’s blanket, tears streaming down my face as I remembered the night she disappeared. Looking up at the apartment block I once called home, I knew I’d never be welcome here again. One mistake had ruined everything.

When I accepted a job working as a nanny for David and Julie and their young children, I couldn’t believe my luck. I bonded with baby Chloe instantly and would have done anything for her. She had David's thick, dark hair and smiling eyes. I fell in love with her and was excited about the future.

But when a terrible mistake led to Chloe disappearing, I was instantly blamed. With no evidence, I was let go and I returned home to rebuild my life.

Twenty years later and I am still haunted by what happened. I have a family of my own now and I’ve worked hard to be the best wife and mother I can be, but I’ve never forgotten the child who stole my heart.

Then a young woman arrives on my doorstep and the past secret that I have kept from my family comes hurtling into my present.

I try to tell myself that I am overreacting. But the woman in front of me looks so much like David. Who is she and why is she here? And if I welcome her in, will she want to be a part of my life, or destroy it?

This book left me reeling! Full of twists and turns, I had a hard time putting this book down!!!

The Nanny is told in two timelines with each chapter titled so there is no confusion. In the past, we see Haley as a nineteen-year-old who is backpacking in Thailand and takes a job as a Nanny. Haley instantly forms a bond with the children in her care. She adores them and stays at this job even when Julie, her employer is less than nice to her. In the present we see Haley as a married mother who takes in a Lodger due to experiencing money problems.

Her lodger begins to ask questions which make Haley uncomfortable, such as what happened to the baby who went missing twenty years ago?

WOW! This book took me by surprise! I loved the two timelines and how the author gave us little bits on information in each. As Heald built her plot, I was fully absorbed and invested in what was happening and tried my best to figure out how the book would end. I was WRONG! I love when that happens. It makes the final resolution even more enjoyable.

I found this book hard to put down. I just HAD to know what whapped and what was going to happen.

Gripping well thought out, and a page turner!

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

I am a big fan of Ruth Heald and was not disappointed by her latest thriller,The Nanny. This is a clever, twisty, fast paced thriller that kept me reading late into the night. The plot is highly entertaining and very suspenseful. The book brought up many emotions including shock, surprise, anger and heartbreak. Switching between past and present timelines, the truth behind baby Chloe’s disappearance is revealed. The chapters are short and end on cliffhangers that made The Nanny literally unputdownable. I highly recommend this compelling, intriguing story. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was a really great psychological thriller by new to me author Ruth Heald! Haley Taylor is a mom with a young daughter at home. Her husband, Lars, has no idea that twenty years earlier when Haley was having a gap year in Thailand, she worked as a nanny for a British couple, and their baby went missing. Whatever happened to Chloe and could someone resurfacing in Haley’s life twenty years later be connected to her?

The novel is told in both present day and flashback as we see Haley’s days as a teen in Thailand working for David and Julie McFarlaine, an engineer and doctor couple, nannying for David’s two young daughters from a previous marriage plus the newborn infant they have together, Chloe. In the present-day timeline, Haley works at a local college advising students. She and Lars need to bring in more income and that leads her to bring a boarder into their home, Joanna. One thing I really loved about this novel was the way that the author made every single character have a potential motive. I had my suspicions about pretty much everyone and then the author still had some amazing twists up her sleeve. It was just a great novel from start to finish. 5/5 stars.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary ARC copy of this book from Bookouture and NetGalley for review purposes.

very circumspectly uptight,
I found it easy to like hailey

to care about her dilemmas

I am a big fan of Ruth Heald, having loved some of her previous books.
The Nanny is a gripping, fast paced and clever thriller and is unputdownable. All qualities that are a must for me in this genre.
The dual timeline adds a new interest for the reader as Hayley balances her new life with her past. There's a lot to keep track of- the timeline, the characters and their relationship together made the denouement something to behold. I would recommend readers keeping their concentration when reading this one!

Ruth Heald's book The Nanny is edgy and suspenseful. There are many deceptions, and lies in it that will leave readers scratching their heads. To fully enjoy the book you must suspend belief and roll with the juicy plot. Told in two timelines, it slowly unravels into a shocking and unexpected conclusion.

Synopsis:
Haley Taylor is happily married, has an adorable daughter, and is the caretaker of her mom. Although taking care of her family along with her ailing mom is financially taxing, Haley enjoys her life. As the bills for her mom's care become difficult to pay, Haley and her husband decide to take in a lodger. The new tenant reminds Haley of someone from her past. Is there a connection between the two?

The Nanny by Ruth Herald is interesting and intriguing. Ruth Herald holds your attention with several game-changing plot twists. It's the ideal novel to kick off the fall season.

The Nanny by Ruth Herald is available September 8th.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture, for allowing me to enjoy this tantalizing book. Your kindness is appreciated.

So many "Nanny" books, so little time.

"The Nanny" was a thriller that lacked thrills.

Although the "What really happened 20 years ago?" premise had potential, the book was slow-paced, predictable, and repetitious.

I listened to the audiobook and the book would have benefited from multiple narrators.

One star rounded up.

Haley Taylor is a mum to daughter Alice and married to Swedish Businessman Lars. She juggles her day looking after her daughter, working and looking after her mother also lives with her. Her mother has Dementia.
The couple are struggling financially so they decide to take in a lodger. That is where Haley meets Johanna a young woman that has a strange resemblance to someone from her past that she is trying to forget.
Twenty years previously Haley was a nanny to an English couple living in Thailand. Using the money to pay for her travelling around Thailand and beyond. But the couple keeps relying on her so much that she was virtually looking after the couple children and doing the housework that she didn’t get to see her friends. When an accident happens, and Haley is arrested for taking their daughter Chloe but was later released. But the guilt stayed with her all these years. But Chloe was never found.
I have read several books from Ruth Heald, and I think this is her best book yet.
This is a really good, fast paced twisty thriller, going back and forth in time in Haley’s life that kept me engaged throughout. It has great characters and I actually felt sorry for Haley, the way she was treated by the parents of the kids she was looking after, and you could sense the guilt coming off the pages. It had one of them endings that you don’t seem coming. 5 stars from me.

The Nanny is an immersive page-turner. It’s provocative and shocking and hurtles along at breakneck speed.

The past forges the present; that’s a fact that’s well known. How long can we keep running before it catches up with us? We can lace up those Nikes and get a head start, but the funny thing about our past is that it’ll always know where we are, where we reside; its GPS is continually trained on you. Some people are lucky in the knowledge that their past harbours no secrets, no skeletons in the closet – but for some, as is the case of the protagonist, Hayley, her past is something she’s worked hard to bury.

The Nanny is one of those rare novels that engages you from the start and holds you captive until the end. It’s entertaining; it makes your heart skip a beat, and there are too many “OMG” moments to keep count. It pays tribute to the old saying – you can’t trust anyone or anything. Finally, it makes you appreciate your boring life; although not much happens, at least you’re not left trying to swim through the murky waters of the past.

Okay, so Hayley is a multi-layered character that I felt immense sympathy for. First, the reader gets an insight into her past and present – the present-day Hayley is a mother to six-year-old Alice. She works in Student Services at the local university. She’s married to Lars, a successful businessman working incredibly hard to keep them afloat; they are undoubtedly facing financial ruin if he doesn’t land an important contract. Her mother stays with them as she declines with Dementia; she has a carer, Michelle, who comes in daily to help her but fears she might need to up her hours as her mother’s memory worsens. Hayley is worried for another reason. However, student Ryan, an aspiring crime writer, is interested in the case where a baby girl went missing in Thailand – a girl she nannied for, a secret she’s determined to keep. He wants to write a true crime story about it and thinks it’ll be his big break.

Hayley spent her gap year travelling, found herself in Thailand, and nannied three beautiful girls – Eva, Emily & baby Chloe. She loved the job but hated Julie, her employer; her husband David was nicer to her, but neither bothered with David’s children from a previous marriage, Eva and Emily. It broke my heart how they were treated and then ostracised when Chloe came along. However, it was only going to be a matter of time before things came to a head.

Don’t assume you know the end of this story; nothing is as it seems; you’ve got a jigsaw in your hand with about 10 bits missing – you don’t know that until the crucial moment. Ruth Heald is a mistress of compulsive plots – I found myself chewing on my nails; I was that nervous. There is nothing not to love about The Nanny.

In 1999, Haley Taylor was working as a nanny in Thailand when she was arrested when the baby she was caring for named Chloe McFarlane had gone missing. She was later released since there was not enough evidence against her. Fast forward to the present, Haley is now married and has a daughter of her own named Alice. Haley lives with her mother who has dementia and her husband's business is currently struggling. They decide to take in a flat mate to help with their financial situation. The young girl’s name is Johanna. Johanna has a resemblance to Chloe's father, David. Could they be related? Is Johanna really Chloe grown up? I don't want to say much more, there's a lot going on here.

Told in past and present timelines, this made the book very entertaining. One of the twists I did figure out early on, but the others I did not. This was a quick and easy read. I did enjoy it, and at times felt bad for Haley as she struggled to keep a very big secret. Overall, a very entertaining read and hard to put down. I am a Ruth Heald fan!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Ruth Heald’s psychological thrillers investigate why people do what they do and the consequences they encounter. They are always well plotted with great twists. In this book, Heald explores a nanny’s worst nightmare ~ a missing child.

Heald’s exploration begins by highlighting the power imbalance between Haley Taylor and her employers, Julie and David McFarlane, and then shows how Hayley’s life is impacted forever by the incident in Thailand.

In writing from Haley’s perspective, Heald ensures that we are emotionally engaged and can fully understand the nanny’s experience. When the unthinkable happens and Chloe goes missing, Haley is arrested. As the timeline changes and we are introduced to Haley Taylor twenty years later, we see that the stakes are high; she’s a mother herself now. This adds another dimension to the story and we understand her anxiety and paranoia. It all begins when the Taylors find themselves in dire straits financially and are forced to rent out their spare bedroom. It’s a choice they live to regret.

This has everything you expect from a Heald novel; seamless time hopping transitions, great characterization, taut plot, unreliable characters, secrets, lies, and an ending you won’t see coming. As always, I really enjoyed another nail-biting Ruth Heald read.

Heald’s latest book examines how the past will always come back to haunt you unless you find a way to work out the problems and let them go. Letting go, for Hayley, has a price. You’ll have to read to find out what’s involved and if Hayley can stop the cycle before it’s too late.

I was gifted this advance copy by Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

In an instant I am taken back to a dream trip to Thailand and to a job as a nanny that changed my life forever. It was supposed to be my chance at a better life. But it turned into a nightmare.

Filled with secrets and lies, this steady paced read will have you hooked from beginning to end. The story has a dual timeline that's told in the past - when Haley was a nanny in Thailand, and the present day. The chapters alternate between the before and after format. There's plenty of twists to keep you guessing, it's also a tense and captivating read. The story is told from Haley's point of view. Life was perfect, until it isn't. Secrets are revealed throughout as Haley's past is slowly revealed.

A story of a missing baby ( Chloe ) many years ago in Thailand and how the main character ( then a nanny ) had been blamed for this, but never charged, present time and everything she has tried to hide from everyone is about to come back and haunt her, with bells on, can she handle it? And did she have something/anything to do with the missing baby….
It’s well written and you can almost see Bangkok via the descriptions, also quite tense as ‘the past’ starts arriving on her doorstep, echoes of the Louise Woodward case ( mentioned in the authors letter at the end ) give the book some reality but I am not sure I fully invested in the way the story progressed or ended
None the less a mainly solid read that did have me wondering just who was telling the truth and who wasn’t

My Thoughts: The story is narrated in alternating timelines through the present and flashbacks, through Haley’s POV. The flashbacks in Thailand are perfectly described, that you felt like you were there. This is a first time read author for me, I will definitely be intrigued to read more books by this author. To really enjoy this book, you have to fully commit to it, even if it seems implausible or impossible. The lies, secrets, deceptions, and betrayals are portrayed in such a way that everyone is a suspect! The characters are well developed with depth, mystery, x, and creatively written. The author’s writing style is complex, edgy, suspenseful, twisty, and kept me absolutely engaged. The story first builds the characters, and we learn a lot about Haley from the flashbacks, the plot is delivered in twisty layers, and then the ending was outstanding. This was a gripping, fast paced, page turning read that I got through pretty quickly. The other thing I would liked to have seen different is to shorten it up a little, at 72 chapters and 351 pages, it is a little long. This book releases next month and I would recommend that you preorder now!

In this thrilling book by Ruth Heald, Haley Taylor's disturbing past is about to upset the balance of her rather normal life. She is a happily married woman with little girl named Alice. Not only does Alice keep Haley busy, she also cares for her ailing mother, who has moved in with Haley's small family.

Due to the fact that finances are tight in the family, Haley and her husband decide to rent out a room. By so doing they meet Johanna. Haley cannot stop thinking that Johanna looks like someone from her past. This is rather upsetting to Haley, as her past is one that she'd rather forget. More than just the familiarity she feels around Johanna, her new lodger shares a revelation. This revelation could upset everything about Haley‘s life thus making her past and present collide.

As this thrilling story is delivered in dual timeline fashion, Haley‘s past as a nanny and the tragedy that she experienced during that time comes into play. That bad experience has created a huge measure of guilt that Haley has lived with for nearly two decades.

With excellent pacing, a compelling story, an intriguing setting and strong characters, The Nanny captured my attention from beginning to end. As fabulous as this story was, the ending was a great surprise, thus making this book one that I highly recommend.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Haley is happily married to Lars and they have a daughter Alice. Her mother Susan also lives with them as she has Dementia and Haley looks after her and Alice.

The couple take in a lodger to help pay the bills. Johanna is a young woman who has a striking resemblance to someone from Haley's past. A past she has tried very hard to forget!!

Twenty years previously Haley was a nanny to an English couple living in Thailand. She was going to use the money she earned to travel around Thailand. She bonds and cares for the children but the couple expect too much of her as she is virtually looking after the children alone, doing all the housework and doesn't even get to see her friends.

When an accident occurs Hayley is arrested for taking their daughter Chloe, but is later released. Chloe was never found.

This a great twisty thriller going back and forth in time in Hayley's life. I had trouble putting this book down!!

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'The Nanny' by Ruth Heald.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Ruth Heald, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 8th September 2022.

This is the second book I have read by this author. I have also read 'The New Girl' which I would also highly recommend.

I was originally drawn to this book by its interesting cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. I am a huge fan of Ruth and if this book is half as good as 'The New Girl' it is guaranteed to be a great read! The synopsis stated that this book is 'Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, T.M. Logan and Shalini Boland.' I am a huge fan of Lisa Jewell and Shalini Boland so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of 2 prologues and 72 chapters. The chapters are medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in Bangkok, Thailand 🇹🇭 and London, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, UK 🇬🇧. The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture. I have visited London recently so I'm looking forward to seeing if I recognise any places named.

This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonist is Hayley. The benefits of third person perspective are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.

'The Nanny' discusses some topics that may upset some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Ruth discusses/includes harm of a child.

WOW!!! What an absolutely page turning domestic and psychological thriller!!! This is the first book I've read by Ruth but it most definitely won't be the last!!!

I started this in the morning and I couldn't put it down until I finished at 2am!!! Clear your schedules before you pick this up!!

This book is fantastically written with in depth and vivid descriptions that leave you hearing the noises of Thailand and your heart pounding. The cover and synopsis suit the book perfectly.

The storyline is scarily realistic and extremely believable. The fact that Ruth has done her research definitely shines through so a huge congratulations!! There is nothing worse than reading a book which is filled with errors but I didn't find a single one here. The plot exposes the reality of the vulnerability of Nannies and Au Pairs around the world. Regardless of their age they are responsible for somebody else's child and if anything happens sometimes the only witness is a child who may not be old enough to talk or may not understand. There is also the vulnerability from their employers as there is a huge power difference and again, if something was to happen and many depending on the carers age or the parents and carers social and work status there is the added burden and stress of who would be believed. This book really does bring up some thought provoking topics that are weaved into a fascinating and page turning storyline.

The plot is absolutely filled with suspense, twists, shocks, tension, romance, lies, friendship, deceit, family and so much more, everything you could want in a domestic drama and psychological thriller. It was very fast paced with so much going on to keep the reader turning the pages. I didn't know who to trust and at one point I think I had suspected all the characters of doing one thing or another!! I was completely absorbed throughout and it really felt like I was in Thailand and London with Hayley thanks to Ruth's fantastic descriptions. I loved how the book was wrapped up and although I would have loved to see more done to certain people Ruth kept the ending realistic to what the outcome would actually be. Throughout the book my heart was pounding and I was filled with a range of emotions from sorrow to anger, disgust to shocked. I was absolutely blown away by the twists and was definitely not expecting them so another HUGE congratulations to Ruth. I have read so many books now it does get harder and harder to surprise me but you definitely managed it. I thought I had it all worked out until BOOM!!! ABSOLUTE BOMB SHELL!! It goes to show how one moment in your life can have such a large ripple effect and affect so many people and lead to changes of so many lives I am looking forward to reading the rest of your books and if they are half as good as this one they are bound to be amazing!!

It is set over multiple time lines. When books show what has happened in the past and what is happening in the present I find it really helps the reader (if it is well done) understand why things are happening and what has lead to the present activities and decisions. It also shows the bigger picture.

THIS IS A BOOK THAT SHOULD BE READ, SHARED AND TALKED ABOUT BY EVERYONE!!!

The characters were all strong and well developed. I really connected With Hayley from start to finish. During the present chapters my heart completely went out to her and as a mum myself my heart was pounding along with hers in some of the situations!! It is always great seeing strong female leads in books especially those who have not had a perfect life and represent reality. I enjoyed watching her personality develop and change from beginning to end and how she went from a young girl who had the responsibility of another person's children on her shoulders to a mum with her own child while still having the burden of thoughts of other people's children. I could not stand Julie and how she treated Eva and Emily made feel sick and my blood boil. The fact that they were not her blood should make no difference but the fact that they were David's meant I could not stand him either. I really don't understand how someone would reproduce with another who treats their own child/ren in that way!!! I was cursing at her through my kindle, well at them both, so many times and I got several odd looks from my partner so thanks for thar Ruth!! I won't say anything about more about Hayley. Julie. David or any of the other characters as I do not want to give anything away. However, there was a mix of personalities which all worked perfectly for the storyline.

CONGRATULATIONS RUTH ON YET ANOTHER ABSOLUTE SUCCESS!! This has got to be one of the most realistic fiction novels I have ever read and I can't wait to see what topic your next book will feature!! This is exactly why you are on my top author club and here is to your next success 🥂

Overall an absolutely page turning psychological thriller that will suck you in, keep you turning the pages hooked until you have finished and will blow your mind.

Genres covered in this book include Women's Psychological Fiction, Women's Crime Fiction, Women's Literary Fiction, Psychological Fiction, Mystery, Suspense and Psychological Thriller amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of 'The Girl on the Train','Gone Girl','You', KL Slater, Shalini Boland Lisa Jewell, T.M. Logan and anyone looking for a heart racing page turner.

364 pages.

This book is just £1.99 to purchase on kindle or £9.43 on paperback via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

Rated 5/5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

This thriller was a little confusing at first because it was told through two different time frames. What I loved however was how clearly the author showed the difference between each of them so it made it much easier on the reader. The book starts out with our main character Hayley who decides with her husband to take on a lodger. They hope this will give them some much needed extra money. The other story line is about when Hayley was younger and she was the Nanny for a young couple in Thailand. When the baby she is responsible for suddenly disappears everyone is left wondering what happened and who was responsible. This story was full of twists and turns and a story like I had never read before. Every character left the reader suspicious on their motives so it was lots of fun to try to figure it all out before the author got to the end of the novel. The best part about this book was every time I thought I knew what was going on in this story the author threw another huge curveball at me that I never could have seen coming. It kept me on my toes as a reader and had me guessing through the whole book. Great read I loved trying to figure everything out along with our main character. I loved our main character Hayley. She was very well written
and even though she had her struggles in the past you could tell that she was still a good person and I really rooted for her through the whole thing. I loved how the book was also told in the third person because it gave the reader much more knowledge than they would have would have had access to otherwise. With so many twists and turns this book is one that you won't be able to put down until you get to the end. Great read and I'm so glad that I got the chance to check it out. Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC it is one that I cannot wait to have on my shelf, and this is now an author that I can't wait to see what else they come out with in the future. The ending of this book was amazing and I never saw it coming in a million years. This is one book that I will never stop recommending to everyone I know. I cannot wait to see what else Ruth Heald comes out with because if they are anything like this then I know that it wont disappoint.

The Nanny is the 5th book I've read by Ruth Heald and I think you can unerringly say that I enjoy her books! Hayley Taylor is a happily married woman with a little girl named Alice but Haley has a disturbing past. Alice keeps Haley busy and Hayley also works at a university as well as caring for her ailing mother, who has dementia and has moved in with her. Hayley and Lars, her husband are struggling with money so they take in a lodger - Johanna. Delivered in a dual, present and past timeline format, between events in 1999 and now, The Nanny held my complete attention from beginning to end. The suspense and tension are high and the ending is something of a surprise. Very impressive.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley and this review is my unbiased opinion.

A crime in the present linked to a mystery in the past.

Struggling to make ends meet, Hayley and her husband Lars decide to take in a lodger. But the prospective candidate who turns up, Johanna, bears an eerie resemblance to someone from Hayley's past - one that she'd rather forget. No sooner than Johanna takes up residence at their home, more secrets alluding to Hayley's time in Thailand, where she worked as a nanny to an expat couple, pop up. Hayley thinks the worst that could happen is Lars finding out about the secret that she has been hiding for twenty years. Little did she imagine how her entire life was about to change.

The plot is revealed entirely from Hayley's POV, but in dual timelines - from the past and the present. The narrative is peppered with enough plot twists to keep one engaged.

Apart from Hayley, none of the other characters were particularly likeable, whether innocent or not. This maybe due to the way they were written, each of them masked in a hint of grey to cast doubt on their intent throughout the story. Also, IMO, at seventy-two chapters, the book was quite a lengthy one and would have been more enjoyable had it been a tad shorter.

Overall, an average suspense novel. Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for providing a digital copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

This is going to sound like a negative review, and although there were certainly annoying elements I still really enjoyed reading it and seeing it unfold. Please remember that when reading the rest of my review.

It was a bit obvious at times. I had guess the ending way before it got there.

The story was good, but occasionally it felt like the author had started it, but had no idea where it was going to get to her imagined ending and changed her mind on a few things.

Quite a few times there were sentences needlessly repeated throughout different chapters or sometimes in the next paragraph.

I would still definitely like to read another by this author. This was my second, and although improvements can be made I have enjoyed reading both

I am excited to be taking part in the #BooksOnTour #BlogTour for Ruth Heald's tense domestic thriller THE NANNY.

"For years you’ve been keeping a secret...But now she’s back..."

I fell in love with Ruth Heald with her explosive debut "The Mother's Mistake" and have thoroughly enjoyed each book since, with her stand outs being her debut, "I Know Your Secret", "The Woman Upstairs" and "The Wedding" . Now I can add THE NANNY to that list. Hands down another five star read. It is edgy, fast-paced and filled with plenty of tense moments and secrets in abundance. What's not to love?

Hayley Taylor is married to Swedish businessman Lars with a five year old daughter Alice. They have a happy marriage and the perfect life together. But Hayley has a secret...in fact, she has several. None of which she has told Lars about.

Twenty years before, in 1999, Hayley was a tourist travelling in Thailand when she landed a job as a live-in nanny for David and Julie McFarlane. Her role initially was to care for David's two daughters from his previous marriage, Eva and Emily, while their mother was recovering from a motorbike accident and until she could take the girls back to England with her. Julie, in the meantime, was heavily pregnant with her own daughter and had no time, nor desire, to care for the little girls who were just four and five.

When Julie's own daughter Chloe was born a few weeks later, Hayley's work then extended to also caring for the baby's needs from feeding to changing to bathing...to pretty much everything her mother should have been doing, Especially considering she had ten weeks maternity leave. But instead, she returned to work early and left all children in Hayley's capable care. Julie didn't have a maternal bone in her body. I often wondered why she even had a baby when she had no desire to actually care for and seemed to merely want her to get older so she could chat with her. Is it any wonder why it was Hayley that Chloe constantly looked for? Was soothed by? Not enough for Julie, she became jealous of her daughter's attachment to her nanny.

So when Chloe suddenly disappeared one evening, all eyes turned to Hayley. She was pulled in for questioning by the police but later released with not enough evidence against her. But David and Julie continued to blame her for their daughter's disappearance and Hayley returned to England with a cloud hanging over her of a time she would much rather forget. Which is exactly what she did.

Now married to Lars, who knows nothing of her experience in Thailand, Hayley keeps that aspect of her life firmly behind closed doors. So when they advertise for a lodger to help pay the bills, Hayley expected it to be the answer to their prayers, not the undoing of her past. Johanna answers the ad and when Hayley opens the door it's like looking into the past. And Johanna seems to be the perfect lodger. She is friendly, helpful and efficient, even assisting Hayley with Alice and her mother who has dementia and also lives with them.

But is Johanna too good to be true? And when things start going missing from her hidden trove of secrets she keeps stashed at the back of her cupboard, she starts to wonder what exactly has she opened herself up for?

But Johanna isn't her only problem. A student support worker at her place of work, Ryan, has decided to write a true crime book investigating the disappearance of baby Chloe in Thailand...and he wants Hayley to fill in the gaps for him. Hayley does her best to fob him off but Ryan won't be swayed and Hayley begins to wonder has her time finally run out?

What an intricate web Heald has woven with THE NANNY! The complex plot, the fast-paced narrative, the unreliable characters, the secrets, the lies, the seamless transition from the present to the past...and a reveal you won't see coming! It is page-turning and addictive from start to finish and I would have been finished sooner had it not been for our beloved Queen's sad passing.

The descriptions are vivid, the storyline realistic and the characters equally unreliable and untenable. The reader is transported to Thailand in an age before the widespread use of mobile phones or internet so one must imagine what it must have been like stuck there with no means of easy communication that we take for granted today. From the hot humid weather on the streets of Bangkok to the lush extravagance of her employers' apartment to present day London, we are completely absorbed throughout the seamless transition between past and present and both the storylines as they unfold. I had a theory which I thought was a little crazy at the time but was then shocked to discover I was spot on! From there, everything began to fall into place...and yet one mystery still remained. What happened to baby Chloe? Can you unravel the mystery before the big reveal?

I absolutely enjoyed THE NANNY and thoroughly recommend it to fans of Shalini Boland, Kim Slater, L.G. Davis and Kerry Wilkinson.

I would like to thank #RuthHeald, #NetGalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheNanny in exchange for an honest review.

Unoriginal story, shallow and flat characters—this was my last gasp on Kindle Unlimited. Sorry, Amazon, these offerings aren’t worth 10 bucks a month😢 cancelling my membership.

First and foremost, I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookoutre for the Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of The Nanny by Ruth Heald. I was intrigued by the synopsis and cover of the novel, and I was not disappointed in the least.

Switching back and forth from the present and past, The Nanny weaved a thrilling story that kept me on the edge of my seat. There were a lot of twists and turns that threw me for a loop, and I was completely wrong in what I thought was going to happen.

Had it not been a work night, I would have stayed up until the wee hours of the night to finish this book. With that being said, I did finish it within twenty-four hours of starting the book. It really was that good!! I find my self still thinking about the story and characters.

There is nothing negative I could say about The Nanny by Ruth Heald, and I gave it five out of five stars. I can't wait to read other novels written by this author. The Nanny by Ruth Heald is due out on September 8, 2022.
