Theo is only the second man Sarah has ever loved yet she kills him, stabs him to death, it’s not her fault but who will believe her? Certainly not the police whose sirens can now be heard. She has to stay free, run, head north to Aberdeen to save herself from prison, back to fifteen years ago when the whole saga begins. Back to a time when she’s not Sarah but Rebecca, back to when a house of cards collapses on her but she’ll fight to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

I’ve never read a PD Viner before but colour me impressed. Yes, it’s OTT but it’s also a highly entertaining rollercoaster thriller that keeps my attention from beginning to end.

I really enjoy the way it’s written, taking us back in time so we can understand the rationale for events in the present. Not that there’s much rationale behind a couple of the characters Sarah/Rebecca encounters as she’s chased the length of England and Scotland. One of these is definitely psychotic and possibly even a bit stereotypical but you are on the edge of your seat wondering what lunacy he’ll unleash next. It’s not a pretty tale as it takes us back to Sarah/Rebecca’s childhood and beyond. It’s violent, there’s fear, hate, obsession and sadness. There’s suspense and tension, at times it’s creepy, weird and strange but it keeps the focus as lives intertwine and connect. I like the dark humour which breaks the taut suspense, there are some original descriptions that sum up dire situations well.

So, yes it’s a bit crazy train at times but it’s also action packed and there’s never a dull moment so I just go happily with the flow! I’ll definitely read more by the author after sampling this one!

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Hera Books for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

The Choice is the second stand-alone novel by British filmmaker, playwright and author P.D. Viner. Not even an hour after she tells her new boyfriend that she loves him, Sarah has been forced to stab him in the heart. Soon after, covered in blood and locked in a Brighton AirBnB bedroom with his body as the sound of sirens grows louder, she has to figure out how not to go to prison for murder.

From there, she’s chasing a clue to what happened fifteen years earlier, what has had her staying under the radar ever since, while on the run from the police and a murderous pair heavily invested in that same past. With her face on the front page of the tabloids, who can she trust?

Sarah’s journey involves quite a bit of theft: shoes from a charity bin; food from a food bank; cash, goods and services on a stolen debit card; but needs must. She is given help from perhaps surprising quarters. It is difficult to say more without spoilers.

The story is told in a first-person narrative from Sarah’s perspective with occasional flashbacks. It’s probably best to don your disbelief suspenders from the first page and just strap yourself in for a rollercoaster ride. True, there are stereotypes, melodramas and plot holes, and some of the backstory revelation is less than subtle, but there’s also plenty of action, some nail-biting tension, quite a few twists and a good helping of dark humour. An entertaining page-turner.

Sarah is madly in love with her boyfriend Theo and can not wait to go on their first weekend away together. Let's just say it does not go quite to plan as by the end of their first night

Theo is dead. Sarah swears she was forced to kill Theo because of something that happened in her past. Now Sarah has a week to uncover the truth and prove her innocence.

This is a wonderfully written book that had me fully engaged from the start.

To save your life...kill the one you love...

This is certainly an action-packed thriller with a twisted plot. Just how I like my thrillers. Give me dark plot twists and crazy psychopaths and I'm happy.

Rebecca is woman of many secrets (what protagonist isn't?) having grown up in an abusive household. Marrying her high school sweetheart who turned out to be a petty crim which involved a bank robbery and disappearing money. In cahoots with some serious crims who then kill him and go after Rebecca, she finds herself a widow at 23. When she "plays dead" (ok so it's a little more than that but let's just leave it at that), they brothers believe her to be dead. Rebecca wakes in hospital, shocked by the death of her husband and her attack. Fearing for her safety and not trusting authorities, she flees and reinvents herself as Sarah.

Fifteen years late, Sarah lives a quiet life and has found love again in Theo. Or so she thinks. But less than an hour after telling him that she loves him, Sarah is forced to make a choice. To kill or be killed. Then emerging from the Brighton AirBnB covered in blood, she must flee once again to escape prison.

There isn't much I can say without giving the plot away except that Sarah's journey involves a lot of running and petty theft as needs must. The story unfolds from Sarah's first person narrative with occasional flashbacks.

It is action-packed with drama and plot holes but there are also some nail biting moments and a few good twists along the way as well as some welcome dark humour. But the moving in and out of herself was just a little too weird.

Overall, an entertaining pageturner that will keep you gripped.

I would like to thank #PDViner, #Netgalley and #HeraBooks for an ARC of #TheChoice in exchange for an honest review.

I actually really enjoyed this. It was very far fetched in places and there were way too many coincidences that took place, but it was all written so well that they all tied up the story nicely. I liked the fact that it didn't end the way you expected.

I would have liked to have found out more about the young boy and girl. Maybe we could have another book that covered their story.

*Minor spoilers*

Synopsis: This story follows Sarah, a woman on the run after being framed for a forced murder of her lover. Sarah has a choice--give in to the demands of her blackmailers or be turned into the police. Sarah knows she can prove her innocence, but at what cost?

Writing: The writing was one of the biggest turn offs in this book for me. First off, there were too many exclamations. Instead of adding to the chill of the story, it was a bit annoying. Exclamations like “UGHHHH” and “Noooooo!” don’t really instill fear or dread. I would write that in a sentence if I had dropped my coffee on the floor. Instead, I would’ve appreciated more “’No!’ she screamed in terror.” I wouldn’t have added this bit into my review if there weren’t so many instances like this. I felt like it interrupted the story and made it feel cheesy rather than made it better.

I also felt while reading that I was getting way too much internal dialogue from the narrator. I appreciate seeing into the mind of the narrator, but there were times when I felt I was getting details that didn’t matter at all or have anything to do with the present situation. This also interrupted the story for me—it felt like every other word was a thought encapsulated in parentheses.

Another thing that I wasn’t sure if it was intentional or just a mistake—when writing in first person narrative, the narrator normally stops talking when they’ve lost consciousness. There were times in the book where this happened…and then there was one time where it didn’t. The one time it didn’t happen, the narrator explains it off as an out of body experience, but this experience didn’t seem to happen any of the other few times the narrator passed out. This felt inconsistent.

Plot: The story wasn’t bad; in fact, it was the redeeming quality of this book. However, a lot of the things that happened in the story just felt a little too unrealistic, even for a book of fiction. I noted a few parts of the book where this happens, but one stands out to me: the part where our narrator is picked up by a truck driver. The issue I had with this part was that it seemed too coincidental. Sometimes coincidences in books seem like fate or maybe an act of the paranormal…and sometimes they just seem out of place. SPOILER:

Summary: Overall, I didn’t hate this book. I didn't like it, but I didn't hate it. The writing was clearly just not my style, and it ruined a lot of the book for me. The plot was okay; if you’re not a writing snob like me and you like murder mysteries, you might be okay with this one.

Page turner? No

Worth it? Not really

This thriller is actually a very interesting thriller and is also an action packed thriller.

The story starts with Sarah stabbing a man named Theo and then running away from the police. But there was a main reason why Sarah must have stabbed Theo. Almost fifteen years ago, Sarah who was earlier known as Rebecca was married to Drew, a petty thief and he owed to the Vincent brothers. Vincent brothers would have hired Theo to fall in love with Sarah. Now Sarah is running away from the Vincent brothers in order to save herself and from the police, as the police do not believe her story.

This was in my opinion an OK, thriller. Though the first part was slightly boring, it got a little bit more interesting towards the end. This whole book feel like you are watching some sort of an action movie with Sarah, the main character running away from the gang group so as a result, some of the things that are happening in the book felt unbelievable. Sarah to me felt like an unrealistic character. There weren't many twists and turns that you would normally expect in a psychological thriller and not very fast paced--it was a slow burn thriller. The writing to me was OK but the author in my opinion did a great job writing a female protagonist. Overall, this is an OK thriller worth three stars..

Many thanks to Netgalley and Hera publishers for the ARC. The review is based on my opinion only

My thanks to Hera Books, The Author, P.D. Viner, as well as NetGalley, for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of The Choice

This story follows Sarah, a woman on the run after being framed for the forced murder of her boyfriend. Sarah has a choice, give in to the demands of her blackmailers or be turned into the police. Sarah knows she can prove her innocence, but at what cost?
The book is a clever, gripping, and an exciting read. The plot initially left me with more questions than answers, which I enjoyed. It is written in dual timelines, helping us understand the rationale for events in the present. As a reader, I couldn't help but feel for our protagonists’ circumstance. Her emotions of helplessness, acceptance, forgiveness, and her determination. The uncertainty of survival is gut wrenching, coupled with many twists and turns that work exceptionally well for this thriller. The ending is mind-blowing and well-executed. It was a highly entertaining rollercoaster thriller that kept my attention from beginning to end. I couldn’t have put the book down even if I had wanted to. I had to find out what happened next! This book is full of suspense and mystery, and I was here for it!
This was my first P.D. Viner book, and I look forward to reading more work from him.

This book starts off fast and builds up speed quickly and adds so many twists that you are never sure what is going to happen next. Within the first few chapters you get sucked in and trying to figure out how Sarah disappeared when Theo is killed. The book then goes back and forth a bit on what happened in Sarah's past to get to where she is now. A lot of times I thought this book was a bit much and had a lot of unbelievable twists, but it was throughly entertaining and one hell of a rollercoaster ride.

I did enjoy how P.D.Viner wrote this book and built up the characters. I really enjoyed how he intertwined the characters and most of them were connected somehow. It reminds me a bit of the butterfly effect and I loved every minute of it. The only characters I thought would have been added to the mix are the two kids Sarah found when she first got away from the killers.

This book is a bit much at times but so worth the read. You want to keep turning the pages to find out what is going to happen next. This is a must read and I look forward to seeing what else this author has written.

The Choice is a clever, gripping and unexpected read. Leave it to P.D Viner to set the stage with a plot that initially leaves you with more questions than answers and characters that are inadvertently bound to one another through a series of events. I struggled to keep this book away as life played catch up with me! There are time travel elements, but they are woven beautifully and presented at the correct times to help shed light on a series of unfortunate events. As a reader, I couldn't help but feel sorry for Sarah's circumstances, and her varied emotions of helplessness, grit, acceptance, forgiveness and determination shone through. The blanket of uncertainty and survival is almost smothering, coupled with memorable twists and turns that work exceptionally well for this compelling plot. The ending is mindblowing and well-executed.
I look forward to reading more work from this author.

Sara kills someone she is smitten with out of necessity. She has been on the run for ages and has her sordid past with layer upon layer of secrets to deal with. Sounds intriguing, right? It is. But then out of body stuff starts happening which is out of my comfort zone so it was impossible to be engaged, though I wanted to be.

The Choice is definitely riveting, tense and suspenseful. The out of body situations and suspension of disbelief are too difficult to believe for me...there was no connection between me and any characters and felt rather mechanical. The writing, while interesting, was also confusing at times. My hope was for a tense and suspenseful thriller without the extras. Just not for me but may work for others.

Thank you for the opportunity to preview The choice. I had this book on my shelf and picked it up this week. I read it in 2 days. This was what I was looking for. The book is not what it appears. It starts with a murder. And what you think is not what it appears. The entire book is a rollercoaster of bad guys and those who could be bad guys.
It starts with a young woman who has a past and is in the run. The author peels the story like a grape and with each page you learn more about her and why she is in hiding. She’s on a journey to find the truth. And that journey is dangerous. She may dying to find out why her husband is dead, why bad guys want her. and who the hell she really is.
Really good. Very well written and quite scary.

It was ok. But not my favourite psychological thriller by any means. I found the storyline a little difficult to follow at times, especially with all the stories about the protagonists past and the various names she’d had. I think there were a few storylines within that I got my wires crossed over at times which added to the confusion. But it was an alright read - I wanted to finish it, I didn’t want to abandon it half way through despite my confusions. I think the end 2 chapters did clear up some of my questions with it which was good as I felt like it had closure at the end of it all!

P.D. Viner drops you in the middle of the action and does not ease up until the last sentence. At first I felt rushed, that I didn’t get the build to the scene I was dropped into — but truth is, I wouldn’t have it any other way. The suspense was high and adrenaline was pumping from page 1. I did feel like the ending was a bit rushed, like the beat really intensified - but I love a book that keeps me in the lurch and “The Choice” did just that.

Why have I never read anything from this author before? This was over the top but I just dived right in and never looked back. It was perfect.

I like the switch in timelines so you can understand where Sarah/Rebecca is coming from. It's like peeking behind the curtain.

This tale is creepy and scary in parts. Suspenseful and tense! I courier get enough.

I will be reading more from this author.

I really enjoyed this book! A few chapters in I was hooked and that’s really saying something considering that this book was completely different to what I thought it was going to be. The story grew more and more complex, and intense with each chapter. The characters are written very well and feel like real people who you can really empathise with. I would highly recommend!

now, I have read "the call" by this author and I knew what I was getting myself into. many political statements and poor storyline etc. this was not what I expected. the story line as amazing, if it wasn't for the hatred that this author has towards men it would've been a 5/5 book but at one point the book says "no monster exists worse than men" like that put me oof completely DNF

Enjoyable read though a bit unbelievable. However whoever proofread it needs shooting!! two places where someone 'brought' something ie to bring when it should have been 'bought' ie to purchase something.

One of THE most annoying spelling errors that seems to be the thing at the moment. Are people really that thick that they don't know the difference? Rant over
