In this hilarious Boys’ Love hit that originally began as a webcomic on the Tapas Media digital platform, a ridiculous playboy and the sharp-tongued dude in his class get (literally) tied up in a romance that shocks everyone–including themselves!
At school, everyone loves Hiro (especially Hiro). Handsome, charismatic, and overflowing with poetic praises of himself, he can get any girl he wants with just a smile and an abundance of background sparkles. He definitely doesn’t waste any of his precious time thinking about Takashi, a stoic and somewhat icy boy who sits in front of him in class. Hiro’s always glaring at Takashi for being so uncool, not staring longingly at Takashi’s stupid beauty mark! When Hiro pushes his theatrical charm too far and finds Takashi daring him to kiss, Hiro realizes that being the hero of his own story means facing a dizzying array of heart-pounding challenges…like figuring out his true feelings for the very blunt, very hot Takashi. And dealing with exactly how much fetish gear is in Takashi’s closet.
Seven Seas will publish the entire hilarious series in print for the first time in one oversized edition of over 600 pages! The uncensored, Mature-rated book will include the full story and bonus chapters originally serialized on Tapas, as well as an exclusive new cover and author’s note from the creator.
First and foremost, let it be said that this book is hard to read. Like, physically hard to read. The 740 page omnibus is a MONSTER. It is larger than my 3-in-1 volumes of Skip Beat. It is larger than the Junji Ito Tomie and Uzumaki collections. Out of all my manga, and hell out of all my novels too, if I had to defend myself, this is the book I would grab. It is MASSIVE, one may even call it obnoxious, and completely unwieldy when it comes to actually reading it. So reader be warned, the digital edition might be the way to go.
It's a pretty fun parody, but it does have some clear flaws. I agree with the other reviewers that the world is not fully fleshed out, and while the self aware author jokes can be funny, they also can get a little stale (the ones near the end especially). Personally, I enjoyed the self aware humor, but I wish more care would have gone into the initial research and planning. There are just certain aspects of the story that feel slightly off -- specifically, it's really easy to tell that the setting is Japan written by a non Japanese person, as many of the cultural nuances and details are just gone. It makes the whole thing feel kind of weird, as you're looking at a setting that is clearly supposed to be one thing, but it's just... not. It leaves a kind of confusing, half-assed flavor in your mouth. I don't think it gets in the way of enjoying the story, as you already need to suspend your disbelief pretty hard and there is enough humor to carry you through the read, but it just... feels weird.
That being said, holy hell is it funny. I burst out laughing at least once every chapter. I ended up also finding the characters extremely endearing; I was invested in them and really wanted to see if they could thrive despite being so fucking stupid <3 And thrive they did!! I was honestly surprised to see how much their relationship evolved, how much they matured, and god that extra section at the end where they live together nearly killed me it was so cute. It's a bit weird seeing such a wholesome and heartwarming relationship develop from a parody character on a comedy background, but the author pulled it off. I'm really, really impressed.
Honestly, that was a really amazing read. A very, very long read, as well. But at the end, I find myself actively wanting to read it again, despite it being so long and hard to hold, because it was good, and I had a really good time with it.
Also!! #switchrights we love to see switching in BL!
Obnoxious Hero-Kun is a satirical take on a classic BL full of clichés, overused tropes, fourth wall breaks, and jokes about the genre. The first half of the story is slow and there were multiple extra comics I didn’t feel were necessary.
The jokes can be funny, but don’t land or come across dry about half the time. The extra comic at the end showing their lives after the events of the main story is adorable and was definitely a saving grace.
The author was definitely lazy with the story building and only focused on the romance and spice. She even makes self-deprecating jokes about her laziness throughout, but I found that annoying. It would have been easier to flesh out the story than to joke about how lazy you are.
It's a parody/satire and those are always hit it miss for me. In this case it was a miss. I didn't find it funny and though the art improved as it went, it still wasn't my thing. I also wasn't really sold on the relationship, which was maybe because it was satire? I see what the author was going for but I really just wasn't buying it.
This is one those "parody" BL's that fails to deliver on the humor aspect. I give it some leeway since it's a webtoon by an independent creator rather than a story that was published by an official publisher. This was apparently collected into a print version and produced by Seven Seas, so I gave it a chance but nothing about this was particularly enjoyable.
The idea is that it starts with cliche BL tropes and before eventually making the MCs into a real couple. However, the jokes just didn't work for me and the writing style felt incredibly immature. Even for a BL set in high school (there are sex scenes, BTW. They're included on the Tapas site but Webtoon cuts them out), it felt more immature than I was expected. The writing was also incredibly shallow so, not a recommend from me at all.
I was really pleasantly surprised by this one. I wasn't sure what to expect from a manga that started off as a webcomic and got published into a collection as thick as a coke can... but it absolutely works for what it is. Obnoxious Hero-kun starts off as a very self-aware parody of many tired and problematic yaoi/BL tropes, it's very intentional about it and isn't afraid to make fun of itself. Along the way in the second half, though, the relationship does feel like it deepens into something very tender and sensual-- both in the way that they playfully joke around with each other as well as the quiet intimacies they share by the end-- while still being self-aware of what it is. I feel like the creator did a really great job of balancing that overall, and I found this collection to be very compelling as someone who has read a lot of good and (very) bad yaoi over the years.
Very few boylove comics leave me in stitches from laughing so hard at almost every turn. Clan of the Nakagamis and Chintsubu are two classics just off the top of my head. Obnoxious Hero-Kun is right up there in that high rank of hilarity (and explixitness, so be careful where you read this!)! Amanda's other comics online like Daimou and Plain Prince are equally worth a re-read or two. I had originally bought the first two volumes of Hero-Kun many years ago, and I couldn't be more pleased to finally be able to have this collection digitally on my Kindle! I hope Amanda's is able to release all of her other work in Kindle format, as well.
The highlight was the extras in the back, they're very cute.
My main sticking point of this was all the casual homophobia. It's 2024, I've got no time in my life for lengthy but I'm not gay sequences from guys kissing like being gay would be the worst thing in the world or homophobic language being thrown around. There's also surprisingly little kinky shit for a book with a guy getting tied up on the cover.
this comic shaped me into the BL consuming internet goer that I am today.
Incredible trope subversion and the latter parts of the story are so incredibly rewarding and beautiful 💕🥰 This absolute brick of an omnibus was a handful and I’m so so glad that I get to own it, see it, and read it in all its glory!!
Humor is always very hit-or-miss for me, but Amanduur's type of humor is exactly my kind of thing. This is a loving parody of BL with fourth wall breaking and trope subversions that never failed to make me laugh. The characters are silly, but their relationship is sweet and has great development over the course of the book.
I found this book at Vintage Stock and the description of it caught my attention. I decided to venture into this genre and I was not disappointed. This was originally a webcomic so it does break the 4th wall every now and again. The artwork is amazing and I feel in love with the characters. I definitely couldn’t put it down once I started it.
4.5 stars rounded to 5. If you're looking for a serious BL, this isn't it, but if you want immature boys, a little bondage, seriously hilarious trope subversion and frequent breaking of the 4th wall, you'll find this pretty fun. Also, thumbs up for the parents actually knowing what's going on (I haven't seen a lot of that in the BL I've read).
I thought I added this to my read list over a year ago. I can’t remember when I read it so we’ll go with a year ago but it’s one of my favourites as I’ve read it at least twice at this point. I’m all for the over the top obnoxious MC that assumes everyone loves them and is kind of a dumby and the other MC that finds them annoying but then falls head over heels for them
This was definitely too long. But, the majority of it was enjoyable. If you accept is as a parody of bl tropes its pretty darn funny and I really appreciated the ending wrapping up in a sweet way with a touch of humor.
This sat on my TBR for far too long (but that's because it was so big! Lol) This was just as obnoxious as the title indicates and I was HERE for it. Definitely an absolute parody on all the bl tropes, so it was one of those things where it was so bad it was good? 😅
It was pretty funny I really like the 4th wall jokes. Those were just so real 😂 I really liked the art. But the story didn’t feel complete. Just some of my own personal pet peeves with manga and possession characteristics. But overall I enjoyed the comedy.
This was absolutely ridiculous and I enjoyed every second of it. It was honestly just a fun time and I really enjoyed the characters and the spice. It was a nice fluffy heartwarming romance that was a great palate-cleanser.
At times amusingly self-aware and 4th-wall breaking sendup of BL tropes, but awkwardly explicit for the high school setting. At least the epilogue ages the characters up and matures the relationship.
