My new neighbor is a scorching hot police detective—one I have a massive crush on, but I never wanted to get his attention like this: as the apparent victim of an attempted murder.

After rescuing me from the icy waters of the Chicago River, Shane begins investigating the people closest to me, and to my horror, discovers several of them have a motive to want me dead.

Worse, he firmly believes they will try again.

The more time Shane spends with me trying to unravel how I plummeted from that bridge, the more protective he becomes, and the harder we fall for each other. But I can tell Shane is hiding something from me—something that has the power to destroy our happily ever after.

All I want is to solve the case so we can put this entire nightmare behind us.

But I never imagined the shocking truth about that fateful evening… or what’s about to happen to us both…

The way Kathy Lockheart tells stories has me in an absolute chokehold! I'm not even talking about the romance.. The emotions you feel for every single one her characters is so raw and real, you can't help but be invested from beginning to end. She has this way of bringing light to sensitive topics but doing it in a way that has you really thinking.

~Willow had a normal life until someone pushed her off a bridge. Luckily her neighbor (who happens to be a detective) was in the right place at the right time. Now, Shane is committed to finding who did this.~

I'm honestly speechless.

Now, Shane and Willow.. Where do I even start? You can feel their connection from the very start. The way Shane glues himself to Willow after pulling her from the river.. SWOON. He literally does not give up on her, even if he has other reservations. And let me just say, his whole story just blew me away..

There's so many things I want to say but I don't want to spoil it for anyone. Just trust me and go read this! HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Wow…. I’ve read all the others in this series, and they’ve all blown me away, but this one really struck a chord with me. Kathy has a way of putting words to grief and trauma and healing and growth that are simply so powerful. We all want those heroines who aren’t Mary Janes but who do get a happily ever after, but it’s not always so beautifully crafted. I once heard someone say that “gentleness is power under control” - we want those kinds of women to inspire us in stories. And we have that here. Willow is kind, but not weak. She is a victim, but doesn’t let it villainize her. This is a girl that anyone can relate to. Shane is a guy we understand, who says what some of us desperately want to hear and need to hear. Reading Willow’s story is so cathartic, especially if you can relate to the struggles and jaggedness of broken families and relationships. Kathy does provide trigger warnings, and I would say read at your own discretion, but consider reading anyway for as I said, it is cathartic. I believe in happy ever afters. And I think Kathy does a simply gorgeous job of showing how even in darkness, hope survives.

On The Edge Of My Seat

Very well written, it had me guessing and at the end in total shock! I read the previous books and they are just as good as this one. I really enjoyed reading this series. I’m not one to give away what is in the book, but only to tell you it’s a must read . And I really liked a few of the funnies in the book referring to other authors. Please read this series, you won’t be sorry ❤️. I give Kathy Lockheart a 5 out of 5, nice work😉

Another fantastic book from Kathy Lockheart. In this story we meet Willow and her cop next door neighbor, Shane. Willow is searching for Mr. Right and keeps finding Mr. Wrong. One night she survives a fall from a bridge. Shane rescues her from the icy water beneath the bridge. After waking in the hospital, she cannot remember why she was on the bridge or if she was alone. The cop working her case seems to think she might have even jumped. Did she jump on her own? Did she just slip and fall? After all it is winter and has been icy. Or is it possible that someone threw her over with intentions for her to die.

Shane lives next door. He takes her home from the hospital and he is convinced that she has been the target of a murder. He can't officially take on her case, but he starts doing some investigating on the side. As time goes by, he uncovers the truth of her fall. With everyone in her life becoming a suspect, Shane is her constant companion and protector. While their feelings for each other grow and deepen, the truth finally comes out it will shatter both of their worlds. Can they figure out what happened to her and survive the aftermath?

The character of Shane is in books 2 and 3 of this series. They are standalones but have interconnected characters that link them. In this story you can literally feel the love oozing off the page between Willow and Shane. Shane is the epitome of the perfect man. Caring, loving, strong, attractive, and brave. I really liked the character of Willow and I easily related to her relationship with her mother and sister. The characters are well written and the mystery involving her fall and her past with her father being murdered really made the story a joy to read. This is a stunning story of love, bravery and survival.

This is the 4th book I’ve read by Kathy and even knowing she writes suspenseful and highly intense stories with unexpected twists, I was still caught totally by surprise by how this book ended.

Kathy is an incredible storyteller with a deft hand at using details to amp up the suspense and keep readers guessing. Her characters in this book both tragically lost their fathers when they were young children and the fallout emotionally devastated their families.

Shane is an alpha protector and when he moved into the apartment next door to Willow, they had many casual run ins. When he pulls her from the icy Chicago River and saves her life he becomes extremely protective and determined to convince Willow her life is in danger.

Their investigation into the people in Willow’s life is hard for the kind hearted Willow to accept. She fears further abandonment by those close to her over the police questioning them.

The danger and suspense keeps ratcheting up until the very end of the story.

I received an early ARC from the author for my honest feedback and an unbiased opinion on the story. I absolutely LOVED it.

Apparently, I'm going to be in the minority with this one. I was irritated from the get-go. The characters are wooden and not really developed well. They had an "insta-love" that is explained as there's always been this deep burning attraction to each other that they're JUST NOW acting on.

The FMC is frustrating because she knows she would never jump off a bridge yet when presented with details that could explain she was pushed, she tries to rationalize it away and INSIST that she is an independent, strong woman who don't need nothin from no one.

I have it two stars because the premise is good and I really wanted it to live up to its hype.

If you've read Book 1 of the Secrets and the City, then you have met Damian. I loved him!
However, Shane may take his spot after reading this one.
The 5 stars is for Shane, our overbearing but sweet detective, and the plot twists. Sure, it may have lined up to coincidentally for most of us, but it was still interesting.
I debated giving it 4 stars though for the main character. Willow (I now despise that name because it was said 24/7) was a terrible main character, in my opinion. At first, you feel bad for her for having a brush with death and her childhood being not so great. As the story goes on- you stop caring. She is angry at the guy that she has been lusting over because he wants to help? Idiot. She almost dies and in that scene, she tells us how she doesn't want to die and wants to fight for her life. Well, she does a terrible job of it. Ignoring red flags everywhere and worrying about stepping on other people's feelings to get answers.... Did I mention she almost DIES?
Maybe I am not being understanding of her feelings, but damn.
Mini rant over- it was a great book. Shane is wonderful- if a little unhinged lol.

The FMC frustrated me in this book. If the police tells you someone is trying to kill you, you pay attention. If the hot detective next door saves you, tells you he cares about you, believe him.

If your family is keeping a secret from you. Use the internet to find it out. I finished the book but so many times I screamed at my iPad and wanted to throw it at the stupidity on the pages.

I’m just glad this was the last in the series cause I really couldn’t read another one. Not a waste of time but a book I will soon forget…so I’m being generous with 3 stars.

Willow has enough family matters to fill an empty house starting with the shooting of her dad when she was 4. An absent mom filled with grief and a barely old enough sister left taking care of her.
Willow’s new neighbor Shane just happens happens to be a sexy detective with the Chicago police. Who lost his dad in the line of duty when he was shot.
Then one night Willow falls over a bridge into the awaiting water. Shane happens to be there and jumps in and rescues her. Not knowing who it was until he had her on shore doing mouth to mouth.
Shane believes someone close to Willow is trying to kill her. But who? Willow cannot remember that night at all. The video is too grainy to see if it’s male or female. Could it be her ex Ezra, good friends Amelia, Tracey or Emily? Her mom or sister? Or could it even be her new neighbor Shane?
Sparks fly between Shane and Willow as they try to figure it out. And what secrets are they going to find out about their own fathers?

GRAVE DECEPTION is the fourth instalment in Kath Lockheart’s contemporary, adult SECRETS AND THE CITY romantic suspense series. This is police detective Shane Hernandez, and HR representative Willow Johnson’s story line. GRAVE DECEPTION can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from first person perspective (Willow) GRAVE DECEPTION follows in the wake of the rescue of Willow Johnson. Out for a late night jog, CPD Detective Shane Hernandez witnesses a woman falling off a bridge, and jumps into the icy water to rescue. Having no recollection of what happened or why, Willow Johnson discovers her rescuer is her next door neighbor, a man who refuses to leave Willow alone. Believing the police are reluctant to investigate beyond the obvious clues, Shane begins to question everyone in our heroine’s life, pointing a finger at all of the people who may or may not hold a personal grudge but as the investigation continues, a series of mysterious occurrences threaten the safety of the woman with whom Shane is falling in love. What ensues is the the building relationship between Willow and Shane, and the potential fall-out as the past refuses to let go of our story line couple.

Willow Johnson lost her father when she was a child, a loss she is unable to remember, one of which her mother and sister refuse to discuss. Shane Hernandez grew up in a family of law enforcement, front line workers, but a bullet took his father way too soon. As Shane and Willow continue to struggle with demons from the past, someone is targeting our story line couple.

The relationship between Shane and Willow begins as a rescue but Shane has lusted after his neighbor from afar, a lust that at times feels a bit stalkerish in his need to defend and protect. At the same time, someone is targeting Willow Johnson, and our heroine refuses to to accept that anyone she knows could be wishing her dead. As the list of suspects continues to grow, Willow finds herself falling for man who may not be relationship material. The $ex scenes are limited but passionate and intense, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The secondary and supporting character include Willow’s ex boyfriend Ezra, her mother and sister Hayley, as well as co-workers Amelia, Emily and Tracey, police officer Rosse, and Shane’s best friend Chicago DEA agent, police officer Fallon O’Connor. The requisite evil has many faces.

GRAVE DECEPTION is a story of betrayal and vengeance, obsession and madness, family and relationships, forgiveness and acceptance. The fast paced premise is intriguing and interesting; the romance is seductive; the characters are broken but struggling to move forward.

✨ “allowing people to mistreat you repeatedly isn’t taking the high road or being a kindhearted person; it’s just giving them a free pass to treat you like a doormat. And sends the message that you’re okay with it.”

Grave Deception is book 4 in 𝙎𝙚𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙞𝙩𝙮 series and Kathy does not disappoint! 👏🏼

The plot is thick and the plot twists are thicker 🤌🏼 not a whole lotta spice but that’s okay!

Chicago PD detective, Shane Hernandez, is out for a late night run when he hears a woman’s scream as she is falling from a bridge into the icy water. It wasn’t just any woman, it’s his neighbor Willow. Shane rushes to get to her to pull her out and save her from hypothermia or drowning. Why was Willow on the bridge and how did she end up falling? Someone pushed her and Shane will make sure justice is served.

Willow doesn’t remember why she was on the bridge or who she was with. She definitely doesn’t know who would want to hurt her. She trusts everyone close to her and is sure none of them would try to k*ll her. She also knows she wouldn’t jump herself. Willow wants to believe it was a freak accident. Sure her family has kept secrets but they wouldn’t hurt her.

Shane is not only going to make sure justice is served, he’s not going to leave Willow’s side. He will protect her at all costs. Shane sees everyone in her life as possible suspects and each could have their own motive.

There is no denying the chemistry the two share but Willow wants to protect her heart and Shane thinks his job is too dangerous for love, but seeing Willow with someone else isn’t gonna happen either.

5 Stars for this edge of your seat thriller!

Once again Ms. Lockheart had me from the first chapter and I couldn't put this book down! I always believed that Williow was pushed into the river, but it was the who did it that had me going back and forth between a few characters. The twists and turns in this book had me scratching my head most of the time because they took me so off guard. I did guess one twist early on ...but it is a real good one! And the burn between Shane and Willow was so slow, but oh so good! This is a great addition to a fantastic series and I highly recommend it. I can't wait to see what Ms. Lockheart has in store for the next book.

Shane is a detective with the Chicago PD and his job is his life until he rescues Willow from the frozen river. He heard her screams as she fell from the bridge and didn't think twice about diving into the icy waters. When Willow wakes up in the hospital, she has no memory of what happened to her and how she ended up in the river. The cop in charge of the case believes that Willow went into the river on her own ... whether she was trying to take her life or accidentally fell in, he really didn't care, he just wanted to close the case. Shane was certain that someone pushed Willow in because no one screamed like that if they were trying to commit suicide and after inspecting where she went in, there was no way she accidentally fell in. Shane takes it upon himself to protect Willow from the unknown. But his investigation will bring up Willow's family secrets that were meant to be kept in the past and neither of their lives will be the same.

I received an early copy courtesy of the author in exchange for a honest review

#MustReadSeries

This is the fourth book in the series secrets and the city and this series is a must read, each book is a standalone and brings something awesome every time.

I have loved this series and this author really knows how to tell stories that will grip you until the very end.

This is about Shane and Willow and after a shocking tragedy happens to Willow which she has no memory of how it happened her life gets flipped upside down. Shane is a detective and he is determined no matter what to help her and do everything in his power to find out who is responsible.
I really felt for Willow and everything that is happening to her and Shanes feeling and gut instinct is spot on.

I really enjoyed reading about these characters and the chemistry between them both is very powerful. I was gripped reading this book and the suspense will have you in the edge of your seat. This story will keep you guessing about who and what happened and the  shockers and the twists inside this book are awesome. If you are looking for suspense and mystery this is absolutely for you.
I highly recommend that everyone reads this series in order, they are standalones  but this series is so great that it's a must read from the very beginning.

The first book in this series ruined me in the best way. The next two were ok, but nowhere near the level of the first. I was soooooooo excited for this story with Shane, and it was amazing and also not enough at the same time.

The plot is great. I loved the mystery of it, and it kept me guessing until the very end. I will say, my gut instincts were pretty dead on with how it was going to play out, but there were twists and turns I didn't expect.

This book deals heavily with grief, and overcoming the tremendous loss of a parent at a young age. It was absolutely heartbreaking just like the first book. I found myself tearing up constantly. The author truly knows how to beautiful write tragic stories.

I liked our female main character. She was very sweet and kind. Too kind. She's suffered great tragedy, loss, and abandonment and treatment from others that she never deserved. Shane is perfection. If you want a protective ass man, he is your guy. I loved him.

The spice was very mild in this book. It was a slowwwwww burn and I was dying. It also seemed like we got less and less detail than previous books. I was pretty bummed!

I wish the story was longer. I truly don't feel like I got enough Shane and was pretty disappointed we got nothing but a bonus chapter from his pov. I so wish this had been a duel pov book. If it had more spice and was longer with more Shane and Shane pov it would have been a five star read for me.

I love Kathy Lockheart’s style of writing so much! I was really looking forward to this 4th book in the Secrets & The City Series by this wonderful author and it definitely didn’t disappoint. As with the other books in this series, it can definitely be read as a standalone, but I suggest reading them all. This one was a really emotional read for me and without giving anything away and spoiling it for others, I would say even with Ms. Lockheart’s trigger warnings, do yourself and favor and read this book. It elicited so many emotions and feelings for me – Willow may be a victim in this book but she certainly isn’t weak and that’s one of the aspects of Ms. Lockheart’s writing that I so enjoy – she writes truly relatable characters with flaws like the rest of us, but really strong, brave female leads that truly inspire me. Her next door neighbor is police detective Shane Hernandez and he has his own demons that he’s fighting as well but together these two wonderful people fight to move forward considering all they’ve been through. It’s inspirational and uplifting while also being an intriguing, edge-of-your-seat romantic suspense. This whole series is a must read! Another 5+ star read from Kathy Lockheart. I'm grateful to have been given an opportunity to read an early copy of this book.

In all of her books, I'm finding I love the dynamic between the characters, they feel more organic than most romance novels. She has a way of letting the reader know how attractive they find each other without making it eyeroll level of description.
I did find this particular book a little flat. It was a great plot but it didn't grip me. I kept expecting the MMC to turn out to be the one attempting her murder just because he was a little too possessive/perfect if that makes sense. Then again, I have been reading much darker stuff lately, so maybe that's why my brain went there. I actually found myself hoping that was the case to add some drama.
Also, the spice fell really flat. It had a great build up, the tension was palpable and when things started to happen (like the dining table) I was all there for it. But for so much build up, it just sort of fizzled out for me. It wasn't bad, it was .... luke warm. Soft descriptions that felt like she was scared to use any dirty words.
On that, can the FMC please just once, finally use the word FUCK.

I've been wanting to read Shane's book since I started this series and it couldn't have gone better! It was so good!! I seriously could not stop reading it, I was so invested! I stayed up late because I just had to finish it. This book can be read as a standalone, but I recommend reading the entire series, it's really good. In this book we have Shane, a police detective and Willow, who works in HR. They both had a rough childhood, which is more connected than they had any idea and they both grew up fighting through their trauma, trying to live and move forward after both suffering huge losses when they were younger.

This suspense kept me hooked from the beginning! I had my theories and I kept trying to figure out who could it be, it turns out my suspicions were right from the beginning but it was still crazy to see it happen, also, that ending took my breath away, omg! I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen!! Anyway, I loved it! It kept me hooked from the start!

Lackluster and Long Winded

Shane and Willow

I actually couldn't wait until this ended. There are some very likable moments. This book came out on March 16, 2023. Precisely when I completed book 3..

The beginning pulled you in, but there wasn't much of a mystery. Maybe it's just that th e mystery was lackluster and pretty boring.

Anyway, this definitely wasn't as good as the description. It was just okay. The love story was strange. Particularly at the beginning.

Most characters in this book were just strange. The villains, Shane, were unhinged and acted and reacted not like a sexy hero but a weirdo psychopath.

Willow was a weak, irritatingly confused heroine. Plus their was too much inner dialog and unnecessary explaining feelings and emotions that I didn't care to read.

Her inner musings and reasoning just weren't relatable to this reader.

Didn't hate it, but it was disappointing and long-winded at times.

Willow and Shane didn't do it for me. I was not all that invested in their relationship.

The suspense of this book wasn't very suspenseful. I guessed the twist correctly pretty early in the book.

Willow irritated me more often than not. Her insistence of her slipping off the bridge and her apartment NOT being broken into, when she had no memory of the accident, drove me a bit crazy. She was so sure, yet had no memory of it!
The repeated answers/information was a little tedious to read.
When she began noticing things off in her apartment after the break in, she tries to rationalize things in strange ways.

Some of the writing was contradictory. Some characters were, I believe, meant to be acting shady so we would suspect them, but in actuality they just behaved like very poor friends and not so great people.

Also, nearly every outside description began with "snow drifting down."

He saved your life. He’s your hot neighbor and also a police detective. You fell off of a bridge and would have died if it weren’t for him. You have amnesia from the traumatic event. What really happened that night?

I absolutely loved seeing the relationship develop between Willow and Shane. The way he is so determined to protect her and keep her safe had me swooning. I loved how they could so easily have such deep and meaningful conversations and flirty, light hearted banter as well. The elements of mystery and suspense throughout had me so invested. I was desperate for answers about what happened to Willow that night. There are some very intense and shocking revelations at the end that had my heart breaking and head spinning!

Thank you so much Kathy for the gifted copy!

I really struggled with this one. I was really hopeful about it as I normally like the author.

I found Shane to be a massive walking red flag. Which I don't necessarily like in a book, but he kept going on about Ezra being a problem when his behaviour was pretty problematic.

I did really like Willow. But the conclusion was just lacking. It came a bit out of left field and throughout the book stuff sort of happened without build up.

I'm all for a good twist, but there needs to be some groundwork laid and although I thought it was obvious the person they had arrested was not the person, it felt like the rest of it was just a bit random. It just didn't feel terribly satisfying.

Also, the big twist that joined the two of them seemed pretty predictable to me.
