The 25-foot shadow passed under the boat, revealing it was a giant, great white shark!
Casey James, a fishing obsessed 14-year-old, loved any time he got to spend aboard the Orca II, his dad’s charter fishing boat. The beautiful coastal waters just south of San Francisco provided great fishing and adventure on every trip, especially when venturing to the Farallon Islands.
Each fall, the waters surrounding the Farallon Islands become populated with one of the most powerful and largest of animals, the great white shark. These sharks are extremely aggressive and hold the interest of many, especially Casey.
A late October fishing trip took an unexpected turn when the Orca II received an emergency SOS from the S.S. Atlantis. They rescued the crew just before the huge freighter sank to the dark depths of the Pacific. As the ship went down, a mystery began to surface. A long-protected secret...
Casey discovers that the dazzling blue waters of the Pacific Ocean hold a deep secret from the past. A 25-foot giant, great white shark and a surfing competition with a $500,000 grand prize just add to the chaos and mystery of the Monster of Farallon Island!
A shipwreck, a greedy billionaire, and a record-sized great white shark are about to invade Casey’s life. Who or what will survive? Can man and beast coexist in the Pacific Ocean?
As my son was getting older, he was craving more adventurous books and books that were more exciting to read. My wife had heard about the Lane Walker series of hunting and fishing books, and I believe my mother got my son the full fishing set for Christmas about two years ago. I really had high hopes for this series but was so disappointed. In reading about the author and the books, the series seemed down to earth and logical, something my son desires, as he is not into fantasy or science fiction. Lo and behold, the story is about a 25-foot great white shark that got that way because of radioactive dumping. Strike one.
Add in a belligerent, wealthy surfer dude and a funny named soda...strike two. At times I felt like I was watching "Baywatch" and kept seeing David Hasselhoff as the rich surfer dude. (for the record, I do like David Hasselhoff, but I grew up with him during the Knight Rider era).
And then a good guy who is really a bad guy trying to make things right that he really didn't have any control over? Strike three.
The book was a disaster. And then the bad guy we are supposed to like to be a good guy commits suicide in the end? The shark disappears at the end of the book without explanation?? Too many holes, not fit for children. All I can say is boo, I wasted my time reading this.
Now, if this wasn't marketed toward children...I might have a different opinion.
Christian Juvenile Fiction Fast paced and enjoyable! Shady government agency dumping radioactive waste, a multimillionaire who will stop at nothing to keep his surfing competition on track, and a giant radioactive Great White Shark, worthy of respect — but being hunted by both.
Cool quotes: Page 115: “Bones was right, eating the blue whale that was saturated in nuclear waste had caused the shark to grow at an alarming rate!” Page 121: “Don't worry about them; we got bigger prob-lems," said Bones. Bigger problems than a multimillionaire trying to track down and kill the biggest great white shark ever on record?”
Dislike: this is a stand-alone book. That said, at the very end of the book, their friend (Bones) drives off in their fishing charter boat (their livelihood) and they never see him again and assume the government KILLED him!?!? Which — to be fair — IS something the government would do, but what the heck?!
My 3 almost 4 year old LOVES having these chapter books read yo him before bed... we average 2 chapters a night... its perfect! Great story line! Highly recommend... in sure we will re-read these multiple times in the future!
Monster of Farallon Islands is a fast paced and engaging middle grades novel. I picked it up for my classroom library and I don't think it will stay on the shelf for long. I enjoyed this novel and will probably pick up some of the author's other works.
