Isle of Ostin #1

The Ostin Heir

Rate this book
Seventy years ago, Theo Ostin witnessed his family murdering a town of humans. He also watched as stakes were driven into his parents’ chests. Since then, he’s lived on an island no one knows still exists, let alone that he survived.

He prefers it that way.

There’s something about Desolate Beach that calls to Paxton Huxley on a visceral level. He doesn’t understand why, but he gives in and stands on the sand every chance he gets.

One day, a man gives him a note and a pendant before vanishing right in front of his eyes. The catch? Paxton now works for a royal vampire.

But is it really a job when he starts to desire the man he’s helping?

Maybe, just maybe, amid the hell they’re both in, they’ll find something more important. Something they will fight to the death to keep. Love.

The Ostin Heir is a steamy M/M paranormal romance. It features a vampire who thinks he’s too broken to deserve love and a human who’s determined to show his possessive lover that he’s in it for the long haul. There is forced proximity, tragic pasts, a brooding virgin vampire, and a HEA. The series is best enjoyed in order due to the overarching storyline. Each book revolves around a different couple.

Content warning for descriptive violence, drinking of blood, assault, anxiety, off-page rape, and off-page suicide.

I was drawn in to this story right away. You just can't help but fall in love with these characters.

Both our MCs have a tragic back story, different, but similar suffering of being alone.

It was a nice difference to see the immortal with vulnerabilities that his human helps him overcome.

I just want to wrap Theo up in a blanket burrito. He's just precious, but if you mess with his man (or friends) he has no problem unleashing his inner vampire bada**.

Very good emotional & mental health struggles that are addressed. Some are relatable, & you can feel their struggles.

This series is going to keep me up until it's fully devoured. I can't wait to meet more Ostin's in the series.

I don't really know what to say, just that this was weird? the writing was very cringy and in some scenes, I was just like yep no, next, please.

Especially when they are just kissing and next thing you know a green dildo makes an appearance.

These two just had the weirdest and most random conversations ever, like out of nowhere they are in the kitchen talking about how they are literal strangers and the next thing is someone is shoving a hard dick into the other one's thigh and then BAM! let's throw there a mention of sexual assault and then move on to another topic.

I will say that it was at least a bit more original than I was expecting to be, or as original as you can be with a vampire romance.

But whatever it was there I read it and I can move on and forget about it in a week.

This is the first book in the Isle of Ostin vampire series and introduces the overall world and to Theo and Pax. We do meet Leven as well, and Leven has cared for Theo for the past 70 years. He got him to safety as a child and now Leven leaves the island periodically to restock supplies. But Leven is no longer able to care for Theo and he finds that Pax is the man to take over.

With this book, I really liked the story it was telling, but the execution was weaker for me. Many plot points felt entirely too convenient, the “bad guy” seemed like a caricature, and I didn’t feel a lot of chemistry between Theo and Pax. I also wanted more on Leven and then how he came to choose Pax. That wasn’t included in this book, but there is a free story offered at the end that gives some of that information. While it was great to get that insight, I would have preferred it in the main book.

I first saw this book before it was $0.00, but the sample failed to convert me. When I saw that the sequel was $0.99 and book one was $0.00, I impulse bought both.

I had high hopes for the vampire romance, but the story didn't work for me in three different ways. First, the vampires are too perfect. Theo seems to physically perfect despite spending all day brooding in his castle. The vampires also don't have any weaknesses except for getting staked or beheaded, which kill anyone truthfully. I think it's fine for vampires to not burn in sunlight or not eat garlic, but I really wanted there to be a greater trade-off to being a vampire. (Could immortality be a downside? Yes, but the novel doesn't it frame as one.)

Second, I didn't like Paxton was a damsel in distress. I didn't figure this out until I was already a few chapters in. Despite Paxton being roped into being Theo's new caretaker/servant, Paxton is actually a hot mess who needs to be saved by Theo.

Third, I didn't like how quickly they fall in love. It's not insta-love because they hate each other at first, and at the beginning Paxton does rightfully consider leaving Theo and not coming back. But for how abrasive Theo is at first, I think a slower burn was merited in this case. (I might also just prefer a slow burn?)

I really liked the premise of this book but the writing style, depth of emotions and pace left a lot to be desired. I like the grumpy sunshine trope though it didn't last very long. It didn't go into what being a vampire meant enough. I didn't feel a connection deveop between Pax and Theo. The last part of the book was action packed but everything was very rushed.

DNF'd. The pacing was so off that it was starting to just impact how I was taking things. Not to mention sometimes things were said or done at seemingly random. But page 105 I just realized I wouldn't be able to properly enjoy this book and this was just not for me.

I didn’t enjoy this book, but I’m not giving it a rating because I really think the majority of the reasons I did not enjoy this book or completely around personal preference and not so much to do with the writing or the story.

The one critique that I can give that I think Has nothing to do with my personal preference is about the progression of the relationship between the two main characters. Theo goes from completely reluctant to accept Paxton’s presence in his home and completely standoffish to attraction that I think they might’ve even acknowledged within the first week and for Paxton he didn’t even want to be there, didn’t know why he was there, and had a history of sexual abuse. And while they work up to being a full-blown couple, they go from completely cold to warm very quickly. There was no thawing out period.

OK, so for the meat and potatoes of the book. The general premise is you have a vampire that lives alone in a castle I think or Manor house and he has secluded himself there because of some tragic history involving his family. In this world people know, vampires exist, and they could exist them relatively peacefully because vampires have agreed not to feed on humans . They primarily feed on each other. And they can eat food.

Because Theo (the vampire) has secluded himself in this mansion for most of his life. He is not great with people, has never been in love, is a virgin, and has only had a human caretaker for company. But because this caretaker is human, he does eventually die and that’s how we meet Paxton because Paxton is going to take over this caretakers role.

Paxton is a young man who has been living pretty rough. Every day is pretty much a fight to stay alive, he is routinely raped by his landlord? It might be a neighbor. But either way essay is a part of his daily life. And he knows that something has been pulling him toward the area that the Manor is in. So through some sketchy/magical circumstances, he finds himself eventually in the manner with very little instruction from the former caretaker and the two are just kind of thrust together to pick up where Theo and the former caretaker left off. Except Theo is attracted to Paxton and vice versa. Which is not the kind of relationship with the former caretaker.

We watched their relationship unfold within the manor while mostly facing the challenge of Paxton past history and Theo reclusive nature and his fear of not being enough for Paxton since he has seen so little of the world, despite being a powerful vampire.

They do eventually get their HEA.

If you came to this book because you were looking for a powerful, toppy, Bitey vampire with a human then you are going to be disappointed. And I wouldn’t recommend it for that. If you want a sweet romance that just so happens to feature a vampire and a human and a little bit of paranormal then you would probably enjoy this .

I thought this was a really interesting premise with a full world and lots to explore given the set-up with the Ostin family downfall. The prologue and first chapter are action-packed and attention-grabbing. I love the image of Desolate Beach but the comfort that Paxton finds there.

I had some trouble really connecting with the characters. I’m not sure exactly what it was, but they just didn’t spring from the page for me. I did like how Theo recognised that his behaviour towards Pax wasn’t okay and really worked to change it. I liked that his instinct was to protect Pax when he was hurting. Although it was hard to read, I thought it was important to show Theo’s real struggles to leave the island for the first time in 70 years when he truly believes he may harm innocent people if he does so.

Both characters have been through a lot of trauma, and a lot of Paxton’s is recent and hanging over his head daily when he’s at his apartment. It felt a bit like this wasn’t really seriously addressed, although I guess I should be grateful for his resilience. (And I didn’t quite make the connection to how Chuck found him at the beach. It was weeks later and they hadn’t driven directly to the beach when they left the apartment. He does seem like the type to hold a grudge but … lazily? I might have missed something.)

I wasn’t expecting quite as much action in the latter half of the novel compared to how relatively quiet and isolated the early part was, but I did know we’d need to more seriously advance the plot.

I must admit, I thought the question of the blood lust might come up in relation to talking about potentially turning Paxton. Would that not seem like a risk? As a reader, I also had more questions about benefits versus drawbacks of being a vampire, but I was willing to suspend disbelief that either Paxton isn’t detail-oriented like me or these facts are common knowledge within this world.

It was nice to see Paxton’s strong feelings for and belief in Theo, as well as Theo’s drive to protect and care for Pax. They’re both a bit damaged, but it really felt like they could be what the other needs. They certainly deserve to be happy.

I received an ARC from GRR. This is my honest review.

"Even if you were standing in a sea of people, I would only have eyes for you." The way I just devoured this book in the last four hours is crazy. I LOVE a good vampire story, and this hit all of the marks for me. As someone who also struggled with severe migraines and panic attacks, I felt really connected with both of the characters, Paxton and Theo. The way I felt all of the emotions that Theo did whenever he had a panic attack just brought me closer to the story and made me love Theo all the more. I really appreciate it when authors take the time to write their own personal struggles into the story. It gives the story new meaning and it makes it so relatable for readers, especially because anxiety is a weight that so many of us carry. The story flowed so smoothly, and it was very easy to understand everything that was happening. A lot of people say that it takes a while to fall in love with someone, but not in every case. Sometimes, when you know, you know. It sometimes only takes a moment. Paxton and Theo were so adorable together. You could feel the love they had for one another bouncing off of the pages, and that is the stuff that I LIVE for. Love is love, ya'll. I can't wait for Arbor and Zeke's story next. Michelle, I absolutely adored this book, and I cannot wait to read the other two in the series.

It’s difficult to pull off a trauma healing arc with a believable panic disorder and slow, incremental progress, but this book does the impossible. The pacing worked for me: love between the characters isn’t rushed. The healing isn’t linear, and there are setbacks, but the traumatized and agoraphobic MC is determined to get better, and his love is there to hold his hand when it gets tough, to give him the push when he’s stalled, and to celebrate his successes when he doesn’t feel he’s done enough. The choice not to have the vampire MC just immediately kill the (human) antagonist once he starts making trouble was kind of surprising, because in this genre, you kind of expect the vamp to go all “kill the ones who hurt you, grr” but the choice to let him live, over and over, even as he was escalating his threats, made a lot more sense if you look at it from a real-life point of view. The MC isn’t an assassin, and in real life, people who are scary and dangerous don’t usually get what’s coming to them in any kind of swift, direct way. I might’ve argued for the MCs to involve the police, but I get why they didn’t. With both of their backstories, it made sense that they would’ve been untrusting of cops—and who can forget the famous Dahmer victim who lost his life because the cops were grossed out by what they thought was a gay domestic dispute?

THE OSTIN HEIR is the first book in the Isle of Ostin series, and it took me to a world where vampires are known about, and humanity seems to even more divided between those who have and those who don't.

Pax falls into the second camp and is alone in the world. So when he is told to get in a boat by a man who disappears in front of him, he figures he has nothing to lose. Theo is understandably shocked when someone other than Leven returns to the castle. And, yes, he's a dick about it, although he does see the error of his ways and tries to make up for the ignominious beginning.

Both of these characters are broken, with trauma and stress they are still dealing with. Their steps together to a brighter future are great to see. I loved how Pax refused to let Theo browbeat him, but instead, faced him with caring and compassion.

This was a great start to a new series and I can't wait to read more. There is still so much for me to figure out about this world. Definitely recommended by me.

Seventy years ago, life for ten-year-old Theo Ostin changed when his family became crazed and attacked and killed humans in the town nearby. He had to watch as his family was killed by humans using stakes. He was saved by a family friend called Leven. He has since lived alone on an island with Leven in an old castle magically hidden.

Paxton Huxley has not had an easy life and for some reason he has been attracted to Desolate Beach. One day while visiting the beach, he is given a pendant and a note and the man disappears. He is mysteriously drawn to the island where Theo lives. Since he had nothing in his life, he decides to stay with Theo. The two find themselves attracted to each other, but one is a virgin while the other had been forced at one time. Love can be potent factor but can it overcome all their issues.

Theo was tough in the beginning, losing his old companion and gaining another who is a stranger. Paxton was determined and slowly broke down his walls. When the two start reaching out to each other, it was amazing. But there are several mysteries surrounding Theo and they seem to be unraveling. This promises to be a fantastic series and the next book should be just as fantastic.

Loved!

I really loved this book and can't wait to read more of this world. This is the first I've read by Dare, and I especially liked the author's note at the end. The book is well written and developed. I read a lot of PNR, so I enjoyed the different take on vampires and plot in this book. I also like that there's an overarching storyline continuing into book two, but with Arbor and Zeke as the MCs.

The pacing of Pax and Theo's relationship was pretty perfect imo. It hit me just right today. My mood changes a lot, and I consider myself a mood reader: I know by reading a summary and a few reviews if it's a book I'm in the mood for. One day, a book can sound unappealing; a week later, that same book can sound exactly what I'm looking for. It's strange, but fact for me.

Theo is a complex character and I enjoyed seeing his growth. And Pax is so strong and doesn't give up on his search for happiness or Theo. I loved his journey of developing strength and confidence. Zeke is such a great supporting character. The moment he has a second appearance, I needed him to get his HEA. I'm very excited to read his and Arbor's story!

Heartbreaking, courageous good start to a series. When Theo was 10, he witnessed his parents, aunts & uncles killing humans and humans killing his parents and all the vampires. He hides until Leven finds him and takes him away. He hides out on the island. Paxton is drawn to Desolate Beach which he visits every chance he gets. He draws solace during his contemplation even though he doesn't know why. He is all alone in the world having grown up in foster care, unwanted by many and shuffled around as if he was an inconvenience rather than a loved and wanted child. An unknown to him man, Levin gives him a note and a necklace and tells him to get in the boat. Paxton, steps in the boat and it takes him on an amazing adventure that changes his life and fillls the hole in his heart. Theo, is on the end of Paxton's boat trip and at first fights his changing world, then his attraction to Pax. Quite an adventure. Great story, good job with world building. Pax and Theo are amazing. Author leaves you at peace with Theo and Paxton and ready for what comes next. Well done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

2.5 stars rounded up ... I think it would have been a middle-of-the-road 3-star for me - an interesting world and story BUT one that definitely seemed to exceed the author's storytelling ability - but I had to dip down into the negative review star level because, while there is a content warning for , the completely casual and cavalier way it was actually discussed on page, and the total lack of any real emotional impact from it, was really off-putting. I don't think this is the author's ignorance though, I think it goes back to the "a story concept above their ability" thing. The emotions that were included were very much tell-not-show, and while I did stick with this one to the end and will probably even take a peek at the next in series, I at no point felt all that emotionally invested in the characters, because the way they were portrayed simply wasn't enough to suck me into their inner lives or make me care beyond a bit of casual interest. Le sigh. I do so love finding a complete series that I can binge... but honestly, I'll be surprised if I stick with this one until the end. We'll see!

Revealing His Story . . .

Seventy years ago, Theo Ostin woke to find his family slaughtering their human neighbors, neighbors who knew them and never had a reason to fear them. Now his family was on a rampage of murder. And in return, his family was killed. Theo had no further interaction with the outside world, choosing to isolate on a hidden island. It was safer for everyone that way.

Paxton Hurley feels a strong draw to Desolate Beach. It makes no sense, but it comforts him to stand on the sandy shore. When someone hands him a note and pendant, will he accept the offer to work for a vampire? And is he ready to fall in love?

There is much more to this story line, things we find out about why things occurred, but the story is best enjoyed first-hand by the reader who will appreciate the surroundings and context the author builds to enhance your experience. These two characters are special and exactly what each other needs to heal their brokenness. Will they find a life together? Or will history repeat itself?

Intriguing start

This is looking to be an interesting series. I liked a lot of things about this book and while not everything worked perfectly for me I’m definitely looking forward to reading the next book. Theo and Pax were definitely complicated characters who had each been through significant trauma in different ways. I liked that there was a recognition of past wrongs, of needing to do better and needing to take ownership of your actions so that you can change for the better. A couple of things weren’t quite there for me. Pax seems to recover somewhat miraculously. No therapy, no real work spent; it felt very sudden. Theo had to work on how he treated Pax and that felt authentic but Pax’s trauma was kind of ignored comparably. The style of writing also took a bit for me to get used to. That’s very much a me thing though as I can sometimes take a while to warm up to some authors’ styles. Anyway, I’m definitely interested in the next book and I think that this could be a really good series.

This book reminds me of a quote - "A heart's a heavy burden" [D.W.Jones].
Theo has so much heart. He totally reminds me of Howl in a way, because his heart is also just the heart of a boy, who has suffered a lot in his life. It is kind of sweet to watch him grow up, mature and battle his demons to be stronger, better and able to take on the world again, all for Paxton. However, the road there is not light and covered in daisies. Do mind the content warnings for this one. They are there for a reason. While the story itself might be filled with love, patience, understanding and recovery, it does include discussions of the heavy subjects mentioned in the content warnings. Aside from that, this story almost drips in sweetness and light, which is ironic, considering how both main characters prefer the shadows. Overall, I liked this story. I hope the next ones are just as good :)

This is the start to the Isle of Ostin series I will say this once you start this book you won’t stop until the last page has been turned so get comfortable. Theo’s sexy as all get out vampire in hiding kind of, he watched his family kill towns people during a bloodlust, he also watches them be murdered with stakes driven into their chest leaving him alone hiding living on an island which was hidden away by mage. Paxton’s mind isn’t right or, so he is told so standing on a island feeling realizing it is vampires that live on that island and that doesn’t scare him away. The attraction is instant, intense, and the magnetic pull can’t be ignored the more time they spend together the strong the pull grows between them as they become friends but can they be just friends or something so much more, are their troubles with the town over, and can they find something close to happiness?.

I was intrigued by this book when I read the blurb. Usually I don't like vampire stories so much but this drew me in. It's an interesting twist insofar as Theo, the vampire character, is not your run-of-the-mill bloodsucking bat but an introverted loner who flees to an island off Delaware when his family turns feral and kills all humans in town. His caretaker dies and a new one is found: Paxton. Soon they discover the tension between them and start acting on it. It's really sweet to see them together. The island becomes kind of a rescue for them and others, human and vampire alike. I don't want to describe too much about the way to their HEA.
Michelle Dare certainly is a nice discovery for me and I can't wait for the second book in the series. I mean, if she wins me over to vampire stories, that's no mean feat! Well done!.

Get ready to be taken on another fantastic journey from Michelle. She has given her readers all the emotions. Giving us new characters to fall for. Gives us the same fun fill attitudes with her vampires!!! Theo is one of them and also a prince of the Ostin family. He has lived in isolation after the tragedy of his whole deaths. Magic keeps him safe and alive under this spell. No one's knows he is there. Then Paxton shows up unexpectedly thru the magic. Now Theo and Paxton need to learn to live together. Theo needs Paxton to survive because he is the only one now. There is a physical, emotional and even a love happening. This is new for both of them because of their dark and abusive pasts. Sparks fly and fangs are coming out. Each finding what they mean to each other within their arms. Finding a way to open up the walls to the world facing the past. Starting to build a new family. Finding out what really happen to the royal family?????

This story had a really cool premise and interesting world building. I liked the setup of vampires being out in the open, and mages and such like. I do wish there was a bit more detail about what being a vampire entails aside from their magic. Paxton and Theo were interesting characters, both with their own unique traumas. I don't know if Paxton's recent and ongoing trauma from Chuck was addressed very well, and could have been a better utilized plot point. They both kind of gloss over what happened to them, though it's less apparent with Theo, whose possible agoraphobia is a feature of the story. What let this story down for me was the somewhat melodramatic and florid writing style. I also thought the pacing was off, because of the quick turnaround of the relationship between the two. I love a good instalust, but this was not that. This was still an enjoyable read, but I don't think I will be carrying on with the series.

Firstly, let me say I’ve got this book from gay romance reviews and this is me leaving my honest review.
This is the first book that I’ve read about a vampire story in a long time, and I’ve got to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It took me a little while to get into the story but once I was there I just could not put it down, my heart went out for Theo . Seeing what his parents did to the humans and having to live in fear of whether this madness would be in his genes , would this be part of who he was?? And of course, losing the only friend that he ever really had hit him hard. But I think Paxton is so good for him. Paxton had nobody who truly care for him. growing up in foster care and being hurt and abused made Paxton really suffer. So finding Theo was fate that’s what it was because these two together are just amazing and the connection. You did throw in a little whopper at the end but it just left me really excited for the second.

Theo escapes to his parents island when his family is killed after massacring the town they lived in. Years later, he meets Paxton when he arrives on Theo's island. As they learn to live together they fall in love. Overall this was enjoyable and a great start to the series. My only issue was that it seemed the relationship was unequal - Paxton provided a lot of emotional support to Theo as he struggles with self worth, anxiety, and panic attacks however it didn't show this emotional support reciprocated in any way. And while this unevenness ebs and flows in relationships, it didn't sit well with me for some reason here, especially when we only see a snapshot of the relationship the author wishes to show. This is probably a me problem but it was getting kind of annoying when Theo kept trying to push Paxton away, again. Despite this I'm curious to see where the rest of the series goes and I want to see Zeke get his HEA in book 2. Spice level: 2.75 - 3

What an incredible read!

The world that this author has built from the ground up is incredible. Well thought out, with a beautiful view. With characters who grow more into themselves with each moment and have a connection to each other that is inspiring.

From the heartbreak that Theo went through at such a young age to finding his future in Paxton, I was entranced from the very first word. Their connection and chemistry was beautiful to read.

Theo was guarded as he didn't want to hurt anyone due to his family's history, but Paxton was patient and sweet as he earned not only Theo's trust but also his love.

The side characters were funny and intriguing and I can't wait to read The Ostin Prince and get Arbor and Zeke's story as I have no doubt it will be just as incredible as Theo and Paxton's was!

I can honestly say that I am deep in this world, hook, line and sinker and I can't wait to see where we are taken next.

The Ostin Heir is the first book in the Ilse of Ostin by Michelle Dare

Years ago, Theo Ostin have witnessed is family murdered a town full of humans. He was only a child then. Theo also saw when a stake was driven into his parents chest. Years later, he still unsure what have made his parents do that. All he knows is that he doens't want to end up like that. So since then, he have live on an island. This is a great story that shows how past actions even those that happen around you can close you off from the world and isolate until you find someone who helps you come out of that fog.
Theo Ostin has isolated himself to an unknown island where is care giver Leven has aided the vampire in life until the day Leven must find his replace and and suddenly Paxton Huxley, a human is thrust about him and their lives change for even.
Will Theo let this human with his own baggage help him to heal his own scars or will he devour this young man before and just what cause Theo's family to kill all the human's that fateful night that Theo came to the island and became the last Ostin alive?
This is a story of coming out of isolation and learn to trust and love again.
It is also the set up for a much larger story. Just what happened to the Ostins and why?
