This is not a love story, though I’d very much wished it was instead of the messed up chaos my life turned into.

Funnily, it all started with him - Muriel. The one who made me feel safe, who seemed to protect me against the shadows only I could see. The only one who never gave up because I was different. But the thing is, I didn’t know him like I thought. At least, not enough to have decided he was a safe place to hold close to me.

What would you do if the reality you lived in was not all there was in the world?

Would you think you're insane?

Special?

Chosen?

I lived in my very personal hell on a regular basis, fearing things I couldn't understand and other people couldn't see, tired of the world as it was.

I was not ready for more challenges, nor anything else that came my way, but he had been there before so I trusted him.

And that was my first mistake.

I didn't realize things were not really just black and white until it was too late.

Indie author Thaise Wolffe has created an original story with new characters to get to know with her story Muriel. She describes her book Muriel as falling into the fantasy adventure fiction and dystopian fiction categories, which I agree with, but there’s also political and military aspects to the story which lend to its exciting qualities. Various romances throughout also contribute to the tensions that arise as the story progresses. The author creates believable conflicts within these scenarios which also serve to propel the story forward. Nothing is wasted here. The romances are thought out and mature, not simply added as distractions. The relationships are important to the development of the story.

After reading the author’s synopsis of Muriel, I wasn’t entirely certain what to expect from the story. After reading the story, I realized she described Muriel well. I just wasn’t expecting all of the unfolding mystery aspects that enhanced the telling of the story. My expectations were engaged as I read, I made predictions in my head as I progressed through the story, and then the author revealed twists I hadn’t anticipated. It was all very clever, honestly. Clearly, the author had a well thought out plan for her story, and she followed it straight through to an ending I wasn’t expecting, but which left me wanting to know more. The story ends with an Epilogue that concludes with “To be continued…” Yeah, ok, author. I hope you’re working on book 2. These characters are still alive in my mind, and I need to know what’s going on with them now.

Muriel contains so many elaborately described characters with numerous personal goals, working through a plot that is clearly still unfolding despite containing various solid conclusions to the challenges faced in book 1, that a second book is absolutely warranted. I’m going to skip elaborating on what I mean about the characters and their goals in order to avoid spoilers. Instead, I’ll take this opportunity to mention the elaborate world-building found in Muriel. The dystopian landscape described by the author lends to the overall feel of the story as dark and threatening to the well-being of the characters. In her synopsis of Muriel, author Thaise Wolffe writes “What would you do if the reality you lived in was not all there was in the world?” The transitions between worlds was superbly described throughout the story and the reader felt the push and pull from one reality to the other along with the characters. The author clearly takes the time to bring the reader along with her characters. I highly recommend you check out Muriel.

Thaise so sweetly sent me a copy of Muriel to read and review, but I regrettably had to DNF... This is one part of reviewing a book is difficult. It can definitely be tough when you have received a book for the sake of reviewing. Muriel has so much potential.

I liked the storyline and plot structure, but I found the writing style baffling and found myself skimming through the chapters, and I found it difficult to connect with the characters.

Keep going! Life has ups and downs but don't let it stop you from enjoying something you love doing.

Thaise Wolf's English debut—major congrats! 🌟 Love how this author switches languages!

Check out Eliza Witten—she's no regular girl. Can spot some serious weird shadows no one else can, but they ain't your typical ghosts. It's some supernatural stuff she's still figuring out.

These sightings start messing with her life, so she locks herself away, needing a break. But there's Muriel, calming her down, even though he's one of those shadows.

As she dives into the world he shows her, she learns about his rebel past fighting a corrupt government. Liz gets involved, training for their risky missions. Things get messy as she falls for both Muriel and another rebel, Zad.

The story gets wild, with the group battling oppressive dictators, and Liz's powers come into play. Can't wait for the next one! 👀

This fascinating dystopian story takes readers on a journey through two dangerous realities. The main character moves between a world full of war and another haunted by shadows and the military. As she struggles to make sense of her surroundings, she also has to face her own feelings and choices, unsure of what is truly right or what she wants. The book is full of action and suspense while also making you think about morality and identity.

"Muriel" is like a perfect mix of fantasy and dystopia, with some politics and military stuff thrown in. The romantic parts aren't just extra; they're a big deal, adding a grown-up vibe to the story. At first, you're not sure where it's going, but then it hits you with some mystery and a surprising ending that leaves you wanting more. The promise of a sequel in the epilogue gets you excited, and the characters stick around in your head.

What makes "Muriel" special is the cool characters and the world it paints – kind of dark and intense. It's all about questioning what's real, and the way it jumps between different worlds pulls you right into the characters' lives. Thaise Wolff really pays attention to the details, making this more than just a story; it's a journey. "Muriel" isn't just a suggestion; it's a must-read for anyone up for a one-of-a-kind adventure.

I read Muriel, the second book by this author. I got an early copy, and I was blown away by how accessible she was. I had a few questions at the start, but as I kept going, everything clicked, and I felt a bit silly for doubting. This book is in a league of its own, nothing like "His Notes," but I still dug it.

This story is all about a messed-up future. It's got different characters telling their sides, and that's what I loved the most. You think things are going one way, and then bam! Your whole view flips around.
