Did the name Judith Sonnet really pop up only recently? All of a sudden, it seems like her work is everywhere in the extreme horror community.

Do you think she can steal your heart with her words? Probably. Along with your lungs, kidneys, spleen, eyes and anything else that can be sold on the black market. But that’s not the worst of it!
What can be worse – you wonder – than that?
It’s because she’ll laugh. Yes, not cackle hysterically, but laugh with the air of someone who knows something you don’t. She knows how to delve deep into your psyche to seek out the depravity you dare not even think of.

But enough of that.

There is a story in this collection that addresses something very close to her. And I am not going to address it, even though she discusses it – you can read the story if you want to know more – because it is NOT an issue.
What I do want to say, whether you need to hear it or not, is that in the extreme horror community, we are all a little different than the ‘normal’ people. We have all had our own traumas and hardships to deal with, which is why we seek out the stories that pushes the boundaries. There might be answers to our questions beyond the borders of the norm.
If everyone were to be judged on merit, regardless of personal beliefs and attributes, we might discover that most of our preconceptions are false. And in this community, most of us know just how wrong people are.
If you tolerate what you don’t understand, you might learn things about yourself. And if you find yourself in this community and still want to have prejudices about trivial and unimportant things, you best fuck off because you have overstayed your welcome.

I want to commend Judith for being so open about her life. And I want to congratulate her on developing her writing talents – I think she has found what she is meant to do with her future.

I have a history of sometimes going "easy" on authors I previously enjoyed, especially indie authors, but I've decided 2023 is the year that ends. I've liked a few of Judith's previous works and had high hopes for this collection, but this book features some of the worst fat-shaming I have ever read. I appreciate the energy that this author puts into fighting other forms of bigotry (namely, anti-queerness and anti-trans rhetoric), but yet again, I have been reminded that even most "progressive" individuals see nothing wrong with vilifying bodies different from their own for no good reason.

Well..... What The Fuck😆😆. You want some "extreme," some gross, some blood splattering, bone crunching violence this collection is for you. Judith Sonnet fuckin rules. She gives no fucks and pushes limits and its fucking awesome. I highly recommend this if you like extreme horror that gets amped to 11 it doesn't get much better than this. These stories are short but pack a punch like a freight train. Bad ass collection.

This is my first book by Judith Sonnet, she was kind enough to give me a review copy and I’m happy she did as it’s now pushed me into bumping her other books up my TBR! This book contains six short stories including the “gross out contest” winner! I read a lot of extreme horror and with this book alone I know I’m going to love the rest of Judith’s books, it takes a good extreme horror to make me cringe and some parts of this book did just that! Loved all the stories in this one my 2 favourites were Rehearsal and coke-nail but honestly loved the whole book.

A fantastically, fucked up, barbaric, smorgasbord of grossness in 6 short stories!! All of them more gross than the last, and all brilliant! My faves were, Rehearsal, Coke-Nail and Something Akin To Revulsion! 💜
As always, I will write a few words for each story….

*LOLCOW* - The one that won the Gross Out Contest!! - OK!! I can see why that won!! 🤢 Its left me with all sorts of vile images etched into my brain, that I don't think even bleach will get out! Utterly, stomach churning grossness!!

*LIQUID SICK* - Jennifer is an ill informed, ignorant and vile woman, against transgenders! She is happy to post about it from behind the safety of her keyboard, but keeps her opinions to herself in public! Then she gets sick, real sick……and the reasoning behind it is brilliantly satisfying! Really shitty, brutal revenge/karma ensues! 🖤

*REHEARSAL* - Corky and Rand are at a "party" on a school night, it's lame……until the special guest arrives….then things get wild!!!! This story made me cringe and wince like I've not cringed or winced for a long time! Absolutely savage!!

*BODY-CRUNCH* - Elmo is a fighter, but has he met his match in the latest backyard brawl? I'd say so! Carnage ensues and a brutal but also sad ending! I felt for Elmo at the end, I also smelt him…. 🤢

*COKE-NAIL* - A group of stoners decide to up the ante and go and score some coke from the local weird coke-head….(Just me that pictured Travis as Tommy Lee??😂) but they don't realise until it's too late, just what a crazy head-fuck of a trip they are in for! This was full-on crazy, with a shit ton of fucked up gore!! 🖤🖤

*SOMETHING AKIN TO REVULSION* - Kayla doesn't know why she hates Jace so much, she just does, and one day after school, she lets Jace join her and her friends at the creek……for an initiation to become one of the cool kids! But things don't go to plan….
I found this one really creepy, and the revenge was awesome!

Overall, I haven't cringed, winced and outright yelled “NO!” like this for a while!The cringe factor was upped at every opportunity, and I LOVED IT!!!!

i finally decided to pick this book up since i was in extreme horror mood and it was a unique time, let me tell you that. 😂

some stories i liked more than the others but the ratings of them are:

lolcow - 2 stars. it didn’t really work for me as i was hoping it would and it ended so abruptly.

liquid sick - 4 stars. this one was absolutely bloody disgusting. the author is so good at explaining stuff in great detail! this story definitely made me sick a couple of times lol.

rehearsal - 3 stars. it was a twisted torture story, that’s for sure, but it wasn’t my personal favourite. the pizza cutter scene did make me squirm though!

body-crunch - 2.5 stars. it was hard to follow the fight initially and picture the aftermath as well, hence the rating. however, i did find some things gross in this story. 🤢

coke-nail - 4 stars. that was fucked up... my mouth was hanging open for quite a while. i wasn’t a fan of the ending though, that was what prevented me from giving it a full five stars.

something akin to revulsion - 3 stars. it was okay, it didn’t shock me or anything but i did enjoy the ending of it!

i do recommend picking this book up if you enjoy extreme horror, it just wasn’t my absolute favourite. i also read for the sake of by sonnet and enjoyed that one, so either one is a good pick!

Six uncomfortable and disturbing stories that push the boundries of depravity, but written with the skill to pull you in deep while you experience their wild ride. This was my first Judith Sonnet, and I loved every disgusting and repulsive second of it. These stories flow well and I believe they should give you a good taste of what Judith is capable of before jumping into a longer work of hers.

THIS IS GROSS. so so gross AND disturbing and i loved every moment of it (when i didn’t wanna throw up). i’m relatively new to judith sonnet having only read a little from her so far but i absolutely loved this. coke-nail was by far my favourite of the stories, mostly because of the absurdity, but it also made me feel the most 🤢 can’t wait to read more by her!

Judith Sonnet first caught my eye with her infamous KillerCon gross out contest win. When I checked out her social media, I found her humor to be an absolute blast, so I had to grab some of her work.

In this short but densely packed collection, Something has a lot to love, both if you’re an extreme horror fan and if you’re not. LOLCow is fantastic for its irony, Liquid Sick is a classic case of the garbage of social media getting its comeuppance, and Rehearsal is a smorgasbord of splatter wrapped in a teen angsty mass-killer spree. Body-Crunch is a love letter to WWE fans, the title story is a tale of mean girls when what goes around, comes around, and Coke Nail…well, Coke Nail is the story you read after you think you’ve read everything that is as depraved and disturbing as you think exists on this earth. I’ll just leave that there and let readers beware. And have nightmares when they check it out.

In a fun meta comment, one of Sonnet’s narrators notes, “I’m no writer, so these are the best metaphors you’re gonna get outta me, you fuck.” Sonnet IS a writer—a damn good one: there’s no disputing that—but she’s, more importantly, a writer to watch. Sonnet is certain to dazzle a f*ckload of readers with her gorgeously disturbing prose.

Sick, Revolting. This book was so good, I wish there had been more stories, but the brevity of the book allows you to read in one sitting, so long as your stomach can handle it. Judith Sonnet is an author who is quickly becoming a must buy. Fans of Judith's work will love this, if you haven't read the author yet, but love the sick stuff, check this out.

It’s rare that every short story is a hit in a collection, but man this book was amazing. I particularly loved LOLCow, Liquid Sick and Something Akin to Revulsion.

I loved Something Akin to Revulsion so much (not only because there was a character called Ruth!) that I hope Judith Sonnet writes even more psychological horror in future! She’s got such a talent.

This was my first read by Judith Sonnet, and I've moved her other books to the front of the line! Thank you so much to the author for gifting me an ARC of these six gut-churning stories!

"LOLCow" was a lesson for me! I have a Reddit account but don't spend a lot of time there, so I didn't know what an LOLCOW was...if you're not sure either, it's a person that can be milked for laughs, often without their consent. The detail in this story was unlike anything I've ever read, and although I was gagging at some parts, I loved every bit of this nasty tale!

"Liquid Sick" was probably my favorite from this collection. Jennifer is a self-described feminist who thinks nothing of putting her transphobic opinions on social media. When she reads an article about a trans woman who was found nearly beaten to death in a public restroom, she snidely commented, "As far as I'm concerned, HE got what HE deserved. Was probably a pervert," and finished with a grand hashtag, #keepmenoutofourbathrooms. Jennifer's story gave new meaning to the phrase, "Eat sh*t and die!" Such a satisfying read!

"Rehearsal" A casual basement party goes horribly wrong when a surprise guest shows up. Carnage and mayhem ensures, and that final line is a real heartbreaker.

"Body Crunch" is a nasty little tale about an underground wrestling ring and a tribute to our obsession with organized violence. Elmo is a prize fighter, or he was, until he meets his match in Freak, a behemoth of a man who does unspeakable things to Elmo in the ring. Once again, a heartbreaking finish.

"Coke-Nail" was a horrific account of some kids who are watching The Empire Strikes Back and musing over Carrie Fisher's "coke nail", a pinkie fingernail that is longer than all the rest. That gives them an idea to visit a neighbor who sports a similar nail in the hopes he many have some cocaine. As soon as they step foot in his house, their fates are sealed. The horror that's waiting in the basement is unlike anything I've ever read about. I'm *definitely* giving my weird neighbor a harder side eye right now!

"Something Akin to Revulsion" finishes out the collection in grand style. I love a good story about how vicious girls can be to one another, and this one captures that theme perfectly. 𝐌𝐚𝐲𝐛𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐊𝐚𝐲𝐥𝐚, the narrator muses, and I was captivated. What begins as a mean-spirited prank ends with a pile of bodies and a horrifying encounter at a sleepover. This was an excellent story to close the collection with.

Another book that I loved written by Judith Sonnet. 
These are brutal stories but there is always a decent plot behind it. Coke-Nail and Something Akin to Revulsion were my personal favourites.

In Coke-Nail I figured out what the nail means just a few sentences before the main character did. And it was like....arghhh.... Amazing!

In the author notes about Something Akin To Revulsion Judith Sonnet mentions that it was a challenge to write something creepier rather than disgusting. For me this one worked very, very well. The author is as fantastic in doing creepy as in doing disgusting.

Damn…

This collection of short stories was mean, brutal, and disgusting.

I loved it.

Judith Sonnet just gets it. She GETS it! She knows how to weave these quick and nasty stories in such a satisfying way. There are gross-outs, there are scares, and there’s the sickest dark humor you can think of. My favorite part of these stories, though, is that they feel complete. They may be short stories, but they don’t leave you hanging. Just a great time for sickos, indeed.

A really intense fucking experience. The title story is at the end but also the most tame. If you can't handle that you definitely can't handle anything else in this book. This is a genuinely unsettling collection full of both great satire and horror. My favorite story is probably Coke-Nail.

A gruesome collection of short stories that were perfect for this time of year! Read content warnings for sure but I enjoy dark gory horror, so this was enjoyable for me!

Each story is different in its own way and does a great job for the little time it has. I was entranced in the slaughter of each one and liked how the motivations were different yet almost believable in a way.

Something Akin to Revulsion is a new Extreme Horror and Splatterpunk collection by Judith Sonnet. Judith is fast becoming known throughout the indie horror scene for her fresh and flowing wordsmithing in the subgenre of extreme horror, but her Splatterpunk is quite noteworthy as well. This collection is an excellent sampling of both, and I have something to say about each story.

The first story, “LOLCOW,” was performed exquisitely at the KillerCon Grossout Contest, where she won, due to both her performance and the quality of her riveting story. After much online demand, she included the twisted, stomach-churning tale in this collection. This story is fast-paced and in-your-face, and may have you shying away from internet searches for a while.

“Liquid Sick” is a pure Splatterpunk tale about the ugliness of bigotry manifesting to destroy a woman from the inside out. It’s an impactful and evocative story that will rip your heart out along with your stomach.

The next story, “Rehearsal,” is good old-fashioned nasty extreme horror sociopath fun. Hardcore extreme horror fans are sure to dig it.

“Body-Crunch” takes us to the brutal world of backwoods wrestling. It’s raw wrestling corruption with a nod to Of Mice and Men and plenty of violence and blood. A solid and disturbing story.

“Coke-Nail” is an absolute assault on your brain, your senses, and your nightmares. This story goes from engrossing build-up to bloody and brutal in a single sentence. Brace yourself.

The final story, “Something Akin to Revulsion,” is the least graphic and gruesome but the most evocatively horrifying. This is a story about incredible cruelty, real cruelty, and the horrors it can create. I found this one particularly impactful because it has a lot to say and says it so well.

Sonnet wraps up this collection with an Afterword of story notes. Pro tip: read it.

If you have yet to experience the writing of Judith Sonnet, this is an excellent place to begin. Fans of hers do not want to miss this! And all extreme horror aficionados should read this collection of relentless horror!

Quite a fun read ^_^ Six stories to captivate and gross you out (unless you're like me who thrives on gore and depravity). Story 2 may be my favourite of the 6, due to the topic about being Trans and even in our advanced modern-day time, there are still those who revult such things. Being part of LGBT, I really enjoyed when the main character gets their (insert spoiler) punishment through it all. Can't wait to read more from you, Miss Judith Sonnet ^_^

Beautifully Grotesque!
The first story in this collection, "LOLCOW," won KillerCon 2022's Gross Out Contest, and the book gets even more brutal after that. I enjoyed all these stories, but my favorite was "Liquid Sick." If you like extreme horror, you'll love anything Judith Sonnet releases. Highly recommended!

A fun gross collection of short stories. All very different from one another covering a range of topics and horror genres. Think my favourite had to be the fourth Body Crunch, love a good wrestling horror.
