Leslie and friends are still trying to recover from their rough year. More secrets and bodies are still turning up in this dark gothic mystery series.
This was a great creepy read that I couldn’t hardly put down. Thanks NetGalley and Versuvian Books for this ARC that will be released January 30.

"The lies we protect aren't worth the burden of guilt they create"

I enjoyed this much more than the first one, especially the new characters. I feel that it is much darker and more captivating than the previous one and the authors managed to keep a much more stable pace in this one.
The way the paranormal elements were included provided a very creepy and disturbing atmosphere.
Even though I was able to predict some twists, it generally kept me clueless the entire time.
A pleasant surprise, I did not expect such a step up in comparison to the first. Also, stunning cover.

"Self-control in all things. Never let them see who you really are"

Thank you to NetGalley, the authors and Vesuvian Books for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Here comes more disturbing and gripping events in the St. Benedict’s series.

I loved River of Ashes so much, so I knew this one would not disappoint me.

The secrets in RoA were just the tip of the iceberg. So many more sinister things were revealed and the Devereaux family is seriously twisted.

Another harrowing story and I am so ready for book 3. Let’s gooo!!

I had not read book 1 before reading this book (and didn't realize this was a sequel until I had it) - it was a mistake

This book (presumably) starts right where book 1 ended. We're thrown into a situation where 4 friends (who I think hate each other?) are dealing with the aftermath of the last book. In the prior book, psychopath Beau raped 2 of the friends, killed the sister of the 3rd, and I assume did something to the 4th (which I'm sure was mentioned and I missed it). So, as near as I can put together, they went to Beau's father, Gage, and they all agreed to murder Beau (like you do). I kept feeling like I was watching an episode of Riverdale where an over the top and ridiculous drama.

There's also a 25 year old body that is discovered. This was the most interesting part of the book (and was keeping this at a 2 star rating until the end). The body is somehow connected with Gage (the father) and it was actually a decent reveal.

One of the 4 friends, Leslie, broke up with her boyfriend, Derek, at the end of the first book (or between books). He turned into a stalker and follows her everywhere because he loves her so much and people kept telling her to get back with him because he's so sweet. I think we're supposed to find it romantic and endearing (unclear), but I wanted her to get some pepper spray for him. It might have been different if I had read book 1, but purely from book 2, not a fan of him at all.

And lastly, we have a hot stranger who shows up into town and who looks and sounds very similar to Beau - I don't want to give away if possibly there is a paternity connection - it was a big mystery and shocking surprise when that was answered! /sarcasm And, golly, do you think he's hiding something?

I never felt like I had a good grasp of the story, except for the part with the 25 year old body. The book would reference how Leslie's sister was murdered by Beau.... but, okay, she died in a fire..... okay, I guess he set the fire? I'm still not 100% clear on how she died. The book kept calling back to the prior book and kept assuming you had familiarity with the book. Even at 75% into the book, it was still referencing book 1 stuff which still wasn't clear.

Many of the characters were one note. For the friends, Leslie was the most developed. Then there was Sara who had a large bosom (said every time she was flirting with Luke and always called her "bosom"). Taylor did research - that was about all I knew about her. Holly..... Sally.... (I had to look it up) Kelly is from out of town. That's it for her character development! Derek is a stalker with a truck. Luke is hot and nice. Etc

And after wading through this book and waiting for it to get better or clearer and give me some payoff, the dang thing ends on a cliffhanger! Talk about adding insult to injury.

I highly recommend you play the drinking game where every time a character "sneers" at another, you take a shot. Warning: you will get wasted. I appreciate how the author uses words other than "said" for characters having a conversation but they all have a sneering problem.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for this advance review copy.

This was even darker than the first book which I didn't think was possible, whilst not as graphic as River of Ashes it has an overwhelming mood of morbidity and gloom, this steps up the gothic noir of the series and I enjoyed the paranormal aspects, the Devereaux family is absolutley *unhinged*  I highly recommend this series if you love dark psychological graphic books, check the TW as it has a few, thankyou so much to vesuvianmedia for sending me a copy!

More like 4.5 stars! I am so sad that this one is over and I cannot wait to get my hands on book number 3! I throughly enjoyed the additional characters and getting to dive deeper into some from the first book. The plot thickens with even more secrets and motives revealed, but I love how it sets it up for even more!

The intensity of the plot in this book was just as page turning as the previous. I really enjoyed the mix of getting some questions answered while also adding many more new ones. The twists and turns mixed perfectly in the flow of the plot so as to make it engaging and smooth story telling. Again.........when can I get book number 3?!

I LOVE THE COVER! After reading the first book, River Of Ashes by Alexandrea Weis & Lucas Astor, there was no way I was going to let the chance to read River Of Wrath go by. I enjoyed the illustrations inside too.

After the first few chapters, it all came back to me. That is a sign of a good book to me, that the author includes a recap to refresh our minds of what has happened in the past.

“Come not within the measure of my wrath.” William Shakespeare

Louisiana Sheriff Kent Davis…I can see him in his Stetson. Kent had moved to Tammany Parrish to get away from all the murders he had to deal with in New Orleans. Looks like they followed him. I am bracing myself for more horrific events, after what happened in River Of Ashes and I wasn’t disappointed. We start with receding flood waters and a dead body. There were already three unsolved murders. The deaths have all taken place around the river and St Benedict, a burned out abbey where the kids used to hang out.

A legend surrounds St Benedict of a lady in white and her wild dogs.

‘When the dogs appear, death is near.’

Leslie Moore’s sister, Dawn, had been murdered. A deal was struck…to make the murderer pay. But, be careful. When you make a deal with the devil, it can come with a very high cost. Would the cost be too much? Would the secrets come out regardless of those involved wanting them to stay hidden? Leslie can’t let it go. Her regrets and guilt haunt her. The murdered are gone, it’s the families that are left trying to cope, unable to move on with their lives, needing answers.

We meet a new character, Luke Cross. What’s up with him? I love when my spidey senses tingle, telling me to beware, to keep my eye on him. Sometimes they are good people, sometimes not. New people rarely come to town, so anyone that does deserves a look see.

One family, more or less, runs the town. The Devereauxs. Their history is cloudy and the entire town is affected by their past, present and future.

Does Leslie have some paranormal ability? Her dreams/nightmares show her the truth. Are they premonitions, or is it her intuition putting the pieces together. Leslie had always been the strong one. Now, she stumbles. She was lost when her other half, her twin Dawn, was murdered. She is growing stronger, preparing herself to face what is to come.

I almost need a playbook to track the players and their motivations.

River of Wrath has plenty of intrigue and suspense, with a gothic feel. Alexandrea Weis & Lucas Aster have some twists and turns to keep us on our toes. At times, my mind was spinning, trying to figure out who did what to who. If you are looking for ONE villain, you will have to look again.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of River Of Wrath by Alexandrea Weis.

Ok let me start by stating how FLAWLESS these covers are for this series! MOOD!

In book 2 of the St. Benedict series, we venture further into the malice that IS the Devereaux family. While graves are being dug for the deaths occurring like clockwork, secrets are being dug up on the most famous family to ever exist in St. Benedict.

Just when I thought Book 1 was twisted...this one came in serving heavy doses of the most twisted twizzlers that ever was! She's giving Twisty from American Horror Story Season 4 HEN-NY! Just when I thought this family was fucked in the head, this book somehow made them and their cohorts straight up demented! The murders were even more vile, the evidence is becoming more scarce, and the murderers are becoming less suspecting. This thrill-ride knows NO bounds!

There was so much historical context to the Devereaux family and St. Benedict itself in this one. Book 1 set up the initial plot and introduced us to the present-day characters. Then this book tied-in that same plot with some historical characters and murders that led to so much happening in St. Benedict in the present. It provides such a depth to these characters and the plot that I will willingly dive into! It also just added so many more players to the game that made so much of this unpredictable, which I am here for!

The book does such a fantastic job of creating such an alluring yet CHILLING atmosphere. I love books that are able to completely change your current atmosphere and shape your senses to that of the book's atmosphere. Sweetie I was all snuggly with candles and wine yet somehow reading this sent me to Slenderman's damn forest running for my mf life. But was I upset about it? NO! If I'm reading thriller, she better give me the creepies and this did just that. Y'all will be happy to know though that I did not spill a drop of this wine running from Slenderdaddy. Would have been a different story with Edward Devereaux though...

I was waiting for the follow-up to River of Ashes & it delivered in a big way! Jumping back into the small town of St. Benedict & the horrific events that took place near the river & at the haunted Abbey. Leslie, Sara, Kelly, & Taylor have big secrets that bind them together. They meet Luke, a newcomer to St. Benedict, and instantly form friendships-although a few of the crew are smitten. When who he is, gets around town it leads to more questions than answers. More bodies are found & no murderer has been found.

This ends way before I wanted it too and I cannot wait for the next book to put all the pieces together. There were a few parts that my jaw dropped and I loved it! I hate overly predictable books. *patiently waiting for the next book*

The Bogue Falaya River stops for no one and it definitely doesn’t wash away their sins. After reading River of Ashes earlier this year, I had no idea where River of Wrath would lead! My jaw dropped at the end of book 1 and it stayed that way the entire time as I read book 2 😂 While not as graphic, River of Wrath was equally as morbid and macabre as it’s predecessor.
-
St. Benedict is far from idyllic and we see even more of its rotten underbelly in this book. The secrets are nonstop and so are the twists. I also really liked that we touched more on the paranormal elements in this book! It adds another layer of “do I really want to read this book at 3am”-iness to the mix 😂 While some things were easy to sus out, others were like a gut punch. How far back does the murder and drama go?! I don’t know, but I’m here to find out. Weis and Astor have me wrapped around their little fingers and I’m not complaining! Book 3, let’s fucking go! 🗣️

First off I want to thank @katieandbreypa, @vesuvianmedia, @lucasastorauthor & @alexandreaweis for my free ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

Holy twists and turns, this book has them all. At the start of the book I wasn't fully invested as it was slower but once it picks up after seeing how everyone is doing from the past events of the first book. Let me tell you they will leave you completely shook.

The first book was soooo good, the second one even better ! The way the authors just swing you one way then bring you back all around and make you say whaaat is fantastic. It is so well written, engaging and fast paced.

Be aware that this book contains a lot of trigger warnings, make sure to check them out prior to reading. It is very addictive and you will not want to put it down. It's messed up and I love it. I cannot wait to get my questions answered in book 3.

If you want a fast paced, engaging, disturbed, shockingly twisted series pick these up !

"𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯'𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦."

𝙒𝙊𝙒!! I expected a few twists and turns but this one had more than I anticipated! I was on the edge of my seat throughout the book. I knew I would be just based on the first book, and after reading this one, I know it’ll be the same for the third book.

“𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘵."

This psychological thriller isn’t for the faint of heart but is definitely worth the heart skips, gasps and lack of sleep. I knew by the first book this series would be my favorite series, but this second book sealed the deal.

"𝘚𝘦𝘭𝘧-𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘭 𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴. 𝘕𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘳𝘦."

There were only a few times did I suspect, but not know, of someone being involved. I love that I wasn’t able to fully decipher if they were actually involved or not so that the mystery was kept alive. Even when it was revealed I was right, I was still thrown for a loop. Would it be wrong to hope this series was never ending? 😂

Alexandria and Lucas you have a fan for life! Thank you for writing something that fully sucks me in causing me to forget the real world. It gives a nice break from the problems of the real world to embody the problems of St. Benedict. My lack of sleep is forever thankful for such a work of art!

The dynamic duo of Weis and Astor make magic together. A rising body count, a dark pact among unlikely friends and a wholly evocative world propel this small town mystery to epic heights. Highly recommended.

Until three unsolved murders rocked tiny St. Benedict, Louisiana, the town hadn’t had a single murder since 1942. As River of Wrath opens, local sheriff Kent Davis oversees the discovery of yet another body. This one looks to have been buried for at least 20 years.

High School senior Leslie Moore and her circle of friends know far more about the mysteries of St. Benedict than Sheriff Davis. After exacting revenge over a horrible crime, the teen vigilantes agreed never to speak to the police. But as Leslie struggles through grief, the newly unearthed body - and the collective shock when another girl goes missing - turns her anguish into an obsession to learn the disturbing truth.

River of Wrath expands the deliciously murky world of St Benedict’s haunted abbey, the riverbanks where people go to party, and most of all, the enigma that is the Devereaux family. This time, Devereaux family patriarch and town mogul Gage Devereaux takes center stage. An investigation into the sordid Devereaux family history positions St. Benedict as a modern-day Pottersville, with the very soul of the town resting on the combined efforts of Leslie and Sheriff Davis.

Wounded by trauma and guilt, Leslie comes into her own as a sleuth that is tenacious, clever and even dangerous. But the story’s real heft is fueled by the layers of believable teen psychodrama at the book’s core. Rumors that The Abbey is haunted by someone they know, and her friend Sara’s creepy suggestion that they do a seance there, add palpable angst that coexist perfectly with the novel’s underlying sexual tension. River of Wrath is in every way a worthy successor to River of Ashes.

In the equally intense and bone-chilling sequel, readers are transported back to St. Benedict high to uncover darkness didn’t end with Beau Devereaux.

With a deeper dive into Gage’s childhood and upbringing, a Jane Doe corpse, and terrifying secrets that are threatening to be uncovered- Weis and Astor spin an even darker tale. Should I be concerned that I missed Beau and the psychotic antics from book one? Maybe. Was I disappointed at all the darkness that was spun throughout this one? Absolutely not.

Throughout the book it became clear that those we thought we could trust, might just be better at hiding the inner demon that lurks. With every twist and turn, I had theories and hunches but couldn’t pin any one answer as the truth.

The perfect set up to answer all the burning questions from River of Ashes while creating even more to set readers up for the anticipation of future releases. This author duo certainly knows how to pack a punch and end with a bang that is both satisfying and leaving you craving more.

The first book in this series left me emotionally shaken for like a week after I finished it. So I have to admit I was glad this one seemed to be going in a slightly different direction. Don't get me wrong it was still an emotional ride, but the narrative choice this time didn't make it as intense to read. I had no desire to put this book down until it was finished. And I don't regret a second of the things I didn't get accomplished because of it.
Naturally the book starts off with another murder, a Jane Doe, whose identity is going to reveal a lot things best kept hidden. Leslie, Taylor, Kelly and Sara have banded together and become friends; each dealing with the grief and trauma of last Halloween in their own way. The bonds they have developed are tested with the arrival of Luke into town; a man with a lot of secrets of his own.
When I say the number of twists and turns in this book had me losing my mind... In retrospect each of them made perfect sense and were so obvious it hurt, but at the time it was like WHAT??!! Oh and to make this book better we have ghosts!!! The creep factor in this book is high and after all those reveals at the end I am going to need the next installment almost immediately in order to survive.

I can never review any books from this series without mentioning the covers… here is another beautiful one.

I know I’ve previously picked up books that aren’t the first in a series and they’re a whole story of their own, but you definitely need to read the first book before this one. This book very much deals with the aftermath of the first and how the characters have changed and shaped themselves in response to previous traumatic events.

The events within this are just as harrowing as the first, although they don’t feel it as much at the beginning. A lot of messes seem to have been swept up, but more and more shocking secrets are gradually unravelled. I did manage to work out some of the twists, but by the end, it felt like those more obvious twists were put in place to keep the reader focused on working those out, ready to deliver a massive shocker... or two. And, boy, did they deliver.

Unlike the first book, the ending of this one is unresolved, and I can’t wait to read the next. What an ending!

Thank you to @KatieandBreyPA , @Vesuvianmedia , @Lucasastorauthor and @Alexandreaweis for this DRC in exchange for an honest review.

"No time for that. You must go on for Dawn."

The first book had left me breathless. I was so intrigued to know who's this new character that the author's would introduce in their next one of the series.

In the previous book, we saw Leslie and Derek as the 'perfect pair'. But in this, their relationship starts to fade. There were mysterious events happening in the Bogue Falaya, and Leslie remembered the previous Halloween with her friends, desperate to find out the truth. On the other hand, Luke Cross appears in the story, followed by the kidnapping of a young girl. Of course, everyone knew that the Devereaux family was the most powerful in the town, and who else but them could be held responsible ?

The main plot of the book hooks on to your mind and keeps you engrossed. If you are a fan of psychological thrillers like me, this is a treat for you. The writing is also such that there are no unwanted dialogs or stories.

This is the second book in the St. Benedict series and I must tell you that this book is so much more interesting and creepy than the first book. I really love the Gothic cover photo of this book. It is really very attractive and eye-catching.

Leslie and her friends are still struggling to complete their last semester and they are also struggling to recover themselves from the past semester. There are more bodies showing up and it is becoming so much more mysterious. I really loved the new characters and Leslie's character has also become more gripping in this part. She tries to hunt down the murderer and the plot twists are so captivating.

I really loved the writing style of the author. There are some scenes written in the book that are really dark. But you will definitely love reading it if you are a Dark Academia lover. It gives out the perfect Gothic vibes.

River of Wrath is book two of the St. Benedict series. I read River of Ashes in the fall and fell in love with the. characters and setting. The book is set in a small town in Louisiana that is pretty much controlled by the wealthy and powerful Devereaux family. We are introduced to this family and without possibly giving away any possible spoilers, let’s just say that they are wealthy enough to cover up any wrongdoings. This book goes into more of the history of the Devereaux family and we get the point of view of the family patriarch, Gage. Of course along the easy there are many twists and turns as more secrets are revealed and more people end up in the River. I loved going back to St. Benedict and look forward to River of Ghosts which is supposed to release in August 2023.

This book is the sequel to River of Ashes. In the spirit of complete honesty, I feel that I should admit that I have not read the first book in this series, and that could've been why I had so much trouble connecting with this book.

On to the review.....

I was approved to read this book through netgalley, which I am very grateful to have the opportunity to, unfortunately, though I did not enjoy this book very much. To be completely honest, in my humble opinion, there seemed to be too many dark secrets in this little town.... especially in regards to a certain family. I felt like things were starting to pick up towards the end to have the book end pretty anticlimactically. Overall, I didn't connect with any of the characters. It felt like the characters made so many needless problems for themselves because they refused to communicate, and it was pretty rushed towards the end.

First off it's not over 300 pages. This was a fantastic sequel! I wasn't entirely sure where it was going to go after the first book, but this did not let me down. The story of what happens after everything falls apart was just as chilling. I don't want to spoil but this is definitely not one to miss. Book releases January 31st. Book 3 of the St. Benedict series comes out later this year.

This story starts not long after the last book ended. It was just as good as the first with so much going on it made my head spin.

Leslie is grieving the loss of her twin. Knowing it should have been her. She is not the he same person she was before and it has broken her family.

The apparition would grin at her with all the savagery of a rabid wolf and say, “I killed the wrong Moore twin.” That was how she knew it was Beau.

There are many huge secrets revealed from the past and present. This story keeps you on edge wondering what’s going to happen next. Greed and corruption are everywhere. The Devereux family will do anything to keep keep there secret from coming out.

“‘The impact of their demise will resonate like a dying star throughout the heavens. But beware their wrath. Such a fate can fashion the monsters men come to fear.’” “The Dust of Giants.”

I for one can’t wait for the next book because of where this one left off. So many unanswered questions.
If your a fan of creepy ghost stories and gothic murder mysteries you need to jump on this series.

“She once believed revenge would soothe her grief, but it only seemed to escalate it.”

Alexandria Weis and Lucas Astor continue the chilling story of the lives affected by the gruesome murders that took place near the river and Abbey. Leslie Moore struggles with her grief which affects her relationship with her boyfriend, a body is discovered near the river once again however this time Leslie is determined to find out who the killer is. Revisiting the site of the events of the previous year, Leslie is disturbed when she sees an apparition near the Abbey. Then there is the arrival of a new stranger in town, after his appearance another person goes missing, it’s not hard to connect the dots, the Devereaux family has something to do with it. Some family secrets never stay buried forever and the Devereauxs are about to have their world turned upside down.

I read “River of Ashes” last year and couldn’t wait to get to the second book in this series. There was so much drama in that first novel I could not think of a way to top it. “River of Wrath” does that and some with its unsettling twists and disturbing revelations.

It was easy to dive back into the story as it picks up where the first book left. The reader is able to quickly recall who the characters are and what transpired between certain people. The atmosphere from the get go is ominous and carries through to the end.

I managed to read this way quicker than I thought because I had to know what was going to happen next. The novel is fuelled by the horror of not just the events that occurred also family dynamics, grief, mental illness and abuse. There are some themes which may be difficult to read so some trigger warnings should be considered.

Overall I did enjoy this story and cant wait to see what the next book will bring.

after i finished river of ashes i knew i needed to jump right in to river of wrath and was excited when i obtained a really early copy.

can i say i kinda missed beau though? who thought i'd miss that psychopath?! but, we jump right after the death of beau and get into A LOT of secrets that the devereaux family is hiding. let's just say, beau isn't the only psychopath in the fam.

river of wrath is twisty turny with a lot of murders and a lot of family drama. even though beau isn't around, the cray cray continues on in the best kinda way.

for horror fans, for thriller fans, for true crime fans... y'all will love this one just as much as book one.

oh book three, when will you be released?!

And I thought the first book was dark and twisted. I read this in a single sitting. It had such a choke hold on me that I could not put it down.

Weis and Astor have such an incredible way of weaving this dark, disturbed story and leaving you on the edge of your seat. Thrilling doesn't even begin to explain this story in its entirety.

I loved the paranormal aspect book 2 brought in, and I thought it tied in so well throughout the story. The characters throughout are amazing and well written. The twists and turns got me again in this one! You really truly never know what's going to happen next. I'm left reeling from the intense cliffhanger and cannot want for book 3!

I never expected that Book 2 would be even more amazing.
I loved book 1 like A++ but this. Mind blowing.
Leslie and her friends are trying to stay in the shadows and off the radar of Gage as promised. But with a new comer in town Luke and more bodies piling up it was hard to do.

This was twisty, it turned my thoughts this way and that and I wasn’t really expecting that ending. It’s still dark, twisted and highly recommend checking content warnings but if you have a iron stomach and tough skin this is becoming my favorite series this year of this genre.

This is a book about secrets, murder, and dealing with past decisions. Leslie has become a different person after losing her twin sister and keeping quiet about her involvement with Beau Devereaux's death from last Halloween. She used to play things safe and knew exactly who she was, but after learning about Beau's sick desires and what he did at the river last school year, Leslie is finding herself hanging out with people she would never associate with and and lies flow more naturally from her mouth than ever before. Bones of a woman are found at the river where haunting past events have taken place. Rumor has it Gage, Beau's father, knows who she is. If you have read River of Ashes, you know exactly what Gage is capable of. He will do everything in his power to protect his family name, including making sure Leslie and her friends are financially cared for in exchange for their silence from last year's Halloween occurrence. The new college kid who moves into town, Luke, is a charming and handsome fellow. Everyone seems to love him, but is he too good to be true? The sheriff keeps an eye on him, determined to solve these unexpected murders from the past and the present. The Devereaux family affects the entire town of St. Benedict, and their history is dark and cloudy. Mental illness seems to run in their past and a longing for power and a proper image to the public drives them. With many twists and turns, River of Wrath will keep you on your toes. Just when you think you've figured out who the killer is, you will be jolted with surprise. Filled with suspense and eeriness, Alexandrea Weis and Lucas Astor fill the reader with horror from head to toes. A murder mystery and psycho thriller all in one book. Not as graphic as book one, but just as dark.
