Kat sidesteps authority, flips off disaster, argues with nuns, and eats too much pie in the newest entry in the Kat Makris series. The Kat Makris series is part Godfather, part Stephanie Plum, and all—well, mostly—Greek. For one perfect day, everything is going to plan in Kat Makris’ life. The groom has a pimple, but she penciled pre-wedding drama into her schedule. The bride has her own pimple; but again, it’s all in the schedule. Kat even accounted for the time she’s planning to spend ignoring Xander, the hot henchman-slash-secret agent, after their disastrous rendezvous in Portland.
Before the wedding reception is over, and Kat has successfully dodged all the questions about what happened in Portland, her perfect day turns into a nightmare. It starts with the dying man in the subterranean tunnels beneath the family compound, and escalates when a device encircling his neck explodes. Voila! Instant decapitation.
Turns out the mystery man is not the only one who has lost his head recently. A spate of similar decapitations around the world lead Kat to discover a pattern to the murders. But before she can investigate, she’s thrown into a van with a gang of crazy Kiwis, who hook her up with her own exploding collar and specific locate the painting of the Seven Sisters, or it’s bye-bye Kat.
This is latest in the Kat Makris Greek Mafia series (#14) and is just as fun and crazy as all the others in this series. In this one Kat and Xander are searching for the portrait of Grandma and her sisters which was involved in one of the earlier books. In the process of looking for it they search out others of the sisters they have not met before and even end up in New Zealand at one point. To encourage them to find it, they spend most of the story with explosive collars locked around their necks, which certainly ratcheted up the tension. This is a fun series and quick to read, leaving fans waiting eagerly for the next book.
I had remembered how Family Crime (book #13) had ended and was anxiously awaiting an explanation from Xander about his choices going into Big Crime (book #14). Kat and Xander were headed back to the US, and I was not only excited for them to get some alone time, but I was looking forward to watching them hash out their communication issues too.
Unfortunately (and very surprisingly), Big Crime skips their US escapade completely and we find ourselves jumping forward in time as everyone is back in Greece – and without them having worked through anything at all. We don’t even find out what happened back in Oregon until the end of this book. It was a bit discombobulating and I hated seeing Kat and Xander on the outs with one another throughout the entirety of this novel. It’s not until the very end that they have a full conversation and make up.
When then do finally have a conversation though, I loved the little vulnerabilities that Xander showed. I think that that’s going to help develop their relationship even more and I’m so anxious for them to make things a bit more official and become more of a set pair on all of Kat’s adventures.
In Big Crime (book 14), Kat’s escapades take us on a journey where we get to meet two more of her great aunts, neither of which disappoint as part of Kat’s crazy family and their mischief-making capabilities. Both sisters played a big part in Kat’s story this time and I loved the Lord of the Rings references with Kat’s new cousins (with the Frodo, Legolas, and Gimli masks). It had me cracking up – and I think I’m a sucker for anything LoTR anyway.
The plot of this novel was fun overall, but it did annoy me that Kat never revealed to her grandma, her dad, her bodyguard, or Xander that she had a bomb strapped around her neck. Despite the fact that the collar could track and monitor Kat’s movements and conversations, she could’ve easily had a texting conversation or passed a note so that the people around her could’ve helped her or even gotten her device off. It didn’t make a lot of sense and Kat didn’t exactly do a great job of keeping everything a secret (although it conveniently helped when her grandma also wanted her to work on finding the painting).
Nevertheless, Kat’s adventures, while chaotic and not entirely believable, are always a hoot. I can’t help but enjoy the snark, humor, and action that remains constant throughout this series and Alex King continues to write characters that I love and root for.
I was wondering if Kat would ever by invited to join the NIS. I’m not sure I’m wholly convinced that Kat is really NIS material, but it’d certainly allow her to continue to get in all kinds of trouble and adventures along the way (and make her transition to be the Family matriarch in a few years that much more seamless). I think having this fact stated in front of a comatose Hera (so that she immediately wakes up screaming “No!!”) was a bit over-the-top and dramatic but I do think that that might end up being fun (unless Hera is able to pull rank too much).
The Kat Makris series is a feel-good and humorous series that is always a joy to read. These books continue to put a smile on my face and I’m looking forward to book #15.
I will admit this is probably one of my favorite authors. And I read anywhere from 2-5 books a week. So much humor, snark, family love and action. Its also fun to find new food to try out. I get giddy when a new book comes out. As for this one, awesome as usual. I don't think ill ever get tired of reading about this goofy Greek crew. Only issue is some of the grammar and spelling issues. Which I will officially be more than happy to read any upcoming books and help fix! Total willing volunteer. Thank you for keeping me laughing and excited for books to come! If you haven't taken a chance on this series and you love a good laugh I suggest you get started.
This was a fun book! It had the usual madcap hijinks with a side of Kiwis. We tackle some family mysteries connected to the Seven Sisters painting and meet some entertaining - if terrifying - additions to the cast of Greek-[insert-other-country-here] characters. Kat and Xander work a few things out () and suspicious baked goods make yet another appearance! Not to mention exploding collars. Overall, I enjoyed this installment in the series - it was hilarious and a really nice pick me up after a hard week. 4.5 stars!
Have you been reading the series? Have you enjoyed it? This book is more of the same misadventures, so go ahead and read away!
This continues the drama stirred up by a family painting in a previous book. Things are bumpy for Kat and Xander. And there is more accidental edible consumption. Whoops!
I hope the author progresses from the on again / off again stage and commits to the K & X relationship. Feels like there is plenty of room for hijinks within a solid partnership.
I am addicted to this series. Looking forward to reading the next adventure.
Just one concern, I noticed a lot of errors in the last two books. Maybe it's time for a new proof reader? Honestly the books are expensive and one expect a certain level of quality to come with the price.
so enjoyed this, crazy mayhem in Greece - a grandmother (head of a Mafia) a missing son and a grandaughter (who never knew of the crime connection) abducted - a gang of rather inept 'family' members and dead bodies! great caper
Absolutely Love love loved this series hated s your interest to see it end can not wait for more it is the Best series I’ve ever read it’s funny , it’s romantic , difinitely keeps your interest
Much swearing in Greek, many laughs and lots of running around chasing a painting. All good fun and games with Kat staggering about in the middle. Loved it.
I am reading book #14 and it’s great! I love this series it never disappoints. Just told my daughter about This series and she blew through the whole series and finished before me, She also loves it. We can’t wait for the next one.
I love Alex A. King, and love Kat, but I think I overdosed on the Mafia series and did not enjoy this one. It's very much same old, same old. I will definitely take a break from the series.
