Pull Back or Die: A Novel

Rate this book
Pull Back or Die follows five BMX riders as they travel the world. They’re five humans from different countries yet find a connection by never really fitting inside the regular monotony of a structured day-to-day. A few of them tried that “professional” scheduled lifestyle after earning spots on Olympic teams and accepting X-Games invites but that only left them unfulfilled. It left them with more of a desire to absorb the substance of things instead of only chipping at the superficial. So they dropped it all behind and committed months at a time living a simple life on the road enjoying what they truly loved.

What starts as a riding film project of hunting down the deepest concreted bowls the world has to offer quickly turns into a form of exposure therapy for them in their own unique ways. They drop in on real living by opening themselves to digging into the heart of their ever-changing surroundings. They learn to survive on scarce funds by competing on a global contest tour not for name legacy or high praise, but for gas money. They live in vans and buses. They sleep in parking lots of beaches, skateparks, and graveyards. They rip through thousands of miles along various continents. They battle the loneliness, depression, and anxiety that only a life on the move can gift. They learn from their decisions found within the loose nights of drunken debauchery. And most of all, they find and forgive themselves and their insecurities through the people they connect with.

Humorous at times yet deeply introspective, Pull Back or Die is a raw and honest look into an action sport bohemian lifestyle. These are five humans that nurture the culture of their craft and not the sport. Gold medals, energy drink helmets, or high subscriber counts don’t mean a thing to them, and within that learned mentality they find that it gifts back beautiful lessons on simply being human. It opens their hearts and minds to the hardships and diversities in all of life; even the seasoned areas of life their youthful minds didn’t know existed. It embeds perspective toward the eternal vastness of what we’re all a part of together. It teaches them to truly face themselves and attempt to understand because you can’t give others love if you don’t love you first, which teaches them to drop their brash defense mechanisms to soften themselves to who they authentically are.

First self-published as 300 books in March of 2020 by a local Orange County printing company for (again) gas money, this is the third edition.

There are very few things that teach about life as well as genuine living does, and if given a chance, this book has the potential to prove that.
