The eighth volume of Insomniacs After School continues to explore the relationship between Ganta and Isaki, who have confessed their feelings for each other and started dating. However, their romance is not without challenges, as they have to deal with their respective health issues, family problems, and academic pressures. The manga does a great job of balancing the sweet and tender moments between the couple with the realistic and serious issues they face. The art style is simple but expressive, conveying the emotions and personalities of the characters well.

I really like how the relationship between Ganta and Isaka is depicted by the author, it's a mature take on a high school relationship but wholesome. I really like how the couple deal with the challenges head on. It is really a great read and I would recommend this manga to anyone who likes romance, drama, slice of life, or astronomy.

Magari gets brave with her parents, there is an overnight star-gazing event, they have the coolest faculty advisor, Gan gets brave with his feelings and overall I couldn't love every character more. This book is always the palate cleanse I'm looking for and I am so glad there is more to come. Thank you to Viz Media and Edelweiss for the ARC, I am very excited to keep recommending this title!

Magari has a heart defect. We’ve known this for a while, but this volume dives very specifically into it, without being overly chatty. After so many manga that have characters with “illness” and nothing more concrete, it’s surprising how much difference this makes.

When two characters have easy chemistry it is no big ask to follow them and so it goes here. Magari comes very clean about her condition and you can tell she’s worried what the boy she likes will even think, but Nakami is not that sort of person.

His little project, which he refuses to tell Magari about, is one of the sweetest little declarations of how much he cares about her. It’s terribly lovely. Even still, this throws an uncertainty over their future that they may never escape, even as Nakami pledges to take Magari everywhere.

This is a lot of quiet moments, the little joys of high school life and live, intermingled with several other enjoyable characters. The lived-in vibe of this story is hard to beat for me, honestly.

And Magari even manages to rejoin the Astronomy Club after much work. I love the contrast between the way her parents are just trying to keep her alive, but it’s her relationship with Nakami that lets her actually live. Neither approach is wrong, but one is so much less.

There’s just so much here to enjoy. There are cat antics, a storm, a wild party, sketching, everything. I adore this story so much and it has a real reason for being all about living in the moment. The way it has continued to pay that off so wonderfully makes it a real favourite of mine.

Another great volume.

I feel like we always have to worry about the health going wrong, which can be stressful. But I love their relationship, and this one has some great shots of them enjoying life together. The side characters were a bit weaker in this volume though.

I have blasted through all the available books in this series in two days so this is a generic, overall (spoiler free) review of the series.

I have never really enjoyed manga preferring books, light novels and anime but the first 2 episodes of this show caught my eye so I decided to try it and I am very glad I did.

I have found the manga to be easy to follow and enjoyable so far (up to book 9).

I was worried this was going to be another story that goes no where and stagnates but I feel fairly confident now in saying this series has a set plot path and destination and there was more story development in the first 4 books than most Japanese media I have read/ seen have in their entire series.
The two MCs are interesting with you learning about them as they learn about each other - what feels mostly natural and a good pace. The story has been really good - exactly what I was hoping for more. The side characters feel like they're actually there and real people and also have their own small plots going on (I find some stories have side characters because they have to but with minimal effort put into them where this is not the case here). The art work is really nice and I've never had an interest in photography before but all of a sudden I find myself wishing my camera phone was a lot more camera: The story draws you in and makes you interested.

There's no fan service, no repetition or bad jokes, the story doesn't feel forced or slowed down (to please the readers or the publishers), the scenes, settings relationships and plot feels realistic and it's all well told and well drawn.
If this series keeps going as well as it is then it could take over as my favourite story in the light novel, anime, manga area for me.
All in all I would recommend this to anyone who has an interest in slice of life/ romance.

I will never cease to praise the drawings. Landscapes; details; close-ups; all superbly rendered. Even without the balloons it is understandable. The reading is delightful and Isaki is so brave, cheerful and beautiful. The secondary characters are sympathetic.

Magari finally tells Ganta exactly what is wrong with her heart (the reason why she suffers from insomnia) and Ganta doesn't really know what to do (considering it's a series medical condition and he's just a high schooler). But he resolves to keep trying to do whatever he can for Magari.

Meanwhile, Magari feels left out because she can't participate in club activities (because of the unsupervised club trip), but takes steps to get reinstated... just in time of an overnight star observation at school that gets interrupted by a typhoon. So even though the teacher is present, Ganta and Magari pretty much have run of the whole school.

I love how much storytelling is done in wordless panels. It proves that you don't need a constant inner monologue or to explain every detail. Like life, it's the subtle bits that convey the most.

This series has 14 volumes.

Oooooh, this was such a romantic volume! It was filled with precious moments, from Yui's decision to buy the arcade, to Magari finally telling Ganta about her heart problems, and then to finally asking her parents to rejoin the Astronomy Club.

"...I'm going to risk everything on the time we're sharing together right now." It's too precious!

Seguim!

I continue to love just how well this mangaka crafts her stories: it is very low-key and rather slow paced but nonetheless compelling. And there is this wonderful attention to capturing the ordinary details of life, but in a way that is interesting and engaging.

I felt like I was sleeping over with them in the school and that was my favorite part of this manga because the rain made it so cozy. Seeing how the animator drew the storm outside the windows made it seem so real🌫

The kiss in the school hall during the typhoon is so sweet. I also love that we now know her history. One ventricle in her heart... amazed she is alive. And can understand why her parents are so protective.
