More importantly, I should be a chef, not a damn bartender.
Here's the thing: I can create the most decadent desserts from scratch, but mixing cocktails is a totally different story. So when she sauntered into the bar with her flowing red hair and asked for something strong with her heart-stopping smile, I served up my best.
I didn't expect that one cocktail to make me question all my plans.
Then she said it would be perfect paired with cheesecake. Now I need to make her mine over dessert...and so much more.
But then I got the call I had been waiting for, and now I have to make a choice.
Bitter Bartender is romantic comedy that is part of the Cocky Hero World and features characters from the Man Card series.

As an extra treat, I add recipes to my books or share recipes on my blog inspired by the characters in my books.
The characters think of the recipes, and I run to the kitchen to create the delicious treat.
I started a food blog in 2010 and published my first book in 2014. Combining these two passions in one space just made sense.
The food blog has changed over the years because my food needs have changed. In 2025, most of my recipes will use whole wheat flour. You’ll also see less sugar and more sugar alternatives.
I can’t wait for you to meet my characters and enjoy the delicious recipes they love to make for YOU!
This book was quite unexpected. Not sure yet if it’s my cup of tea, but it wasn’t unpleasant.
There’s little drama, little character development. Basically, little to no plot. It isn’t that kind of story. It’s a moment in time, when you see two people connecting on a deeper level just because they are around each other and share some sweet moments.
And when I say sweet moments, I mean it. Because they mostly involve food–of the cake variety, but not only–and drinks. If you aren’t a foodie, I’m not sure how much you can relate to the characters. That food serves as a way for characters to learn more about each other, and as a kind of foreplay too.
Don’t expect a lot of sexy times though. There’s some, but for such a short book, they come quite late in the story. Definitely a slow burn, even though there’s instant attraction between Ava and Beckett. The love comes quite quickly too.
I found the link to the Cocky Hero Club original and interesting. The characters from the original books are only in the background, and mostly serve as a cautionary tale for Ava.
I felt a bit frustrated because of missed opportunities. Considering Beckett’s situation, and even Ava’s, it would have been interesting to see more of the feeling of not belonging to the city they live in, more of their struggles. Basically portraying New York as a character in itself, and the great villain of the story. It was there through a few scenes, but more like a trace than a conscious decision from the author.
As the story is quite short, there’s not time to get bored, even though nothing really happens, and I really liked the easy comfort Ava and Beckett find in each other.
Quickie
- Series: standalone (but part of the Cocky Hero Club, and linked to other books by the author) - Hashtags: #slow burn #food - Triggers: N/A - Main couple: Ava & Beckett - Hotness: 3/5 - Romance: 3/5 - + the comfort and easiness of their relationship - – not much of a story
Bitter Bartender was the perfect title. I loved this story so much. Ava and Beckett had me laughing often. Both unhappy with where they were at career wise but stuck all the same time. These two meet up in the bar Beckett works at. It's insta love from there. As they get to know each other it gets harder for them to reveal their true feelings for one another. I have to say with all the talk of food throughout the story my stomach grumbled and I druled. This may have been a quick read but it was very fun and entertaining. It kept my interest from beginning to end. I read this in one sitting. You will enjoy this one tremendously. The way the original characters were part of the story was perfect for this book. What are you waiting for? Grab that copy now! Don't miss out on this phenomenal book!

Beckett came to NY for a job, when it unexpectedly falls through he finds himself bartending. Ava’s life has become monotonous. Both Beckett and Ava are dissatisfied with their work.
When Ava walks into a bar and meets Beckett sparks fly. Their banter is hilarious and their connection is instantaneous. As they get to know one another, feelings begin to grow. But when Beckett gets the opportunity of a lifetime, can he convince Ava to take a chance?
Beckett and Ava have some major chemistry and mesh so well. This is a cute friends to lovers romance and a nice addition to the Cocky Hero Club series.
A short story about Beckett and Ava. Beckett isnt really happy in New York, when his plans changed he was just stuck bartending. But one day Ava walks in and his whole world started to shift. Ava was mesmerized by Beckett when she first met him. Both at a standstill in their life. Once their relationship starts these two are connected and will do whatever they have to to be together.
This was a fast paced story. This book is a lighter romance. I just wish we got to know the characters a little more. Maybe some background. The connection to the Cocky series was pretty good. Overall a sweet read.
If I could give Bitter Bartender more than 5 stars I would in a heartbeat it was so freakin' good!! I loved Beckett and Ava, and their chemistry was apparent from the first time they meet and the banter between them is awesome too!! Both Beckett and Ava aren't happy where they are at this point in their lives, both in where they are living, and their jobs so they have that in common, of course they find out they have so much more than that in common. Beckett is seriously throwing in the towel and leaving New York and going back home but then Ava enters the picture and he's wondering if he could be happy after all there. Ava is in a job that she feels ok about, but if she could be anywhere but New York she'd be ok with that. Beckett is bartending because the job he actually came to New York for fell through and he's forced to stay and do whatever job at that point he can get. Meeting Ava has made him the happiest he has been in awhile, and Ava is feeling the same. An opportunity comes up for Beckett from some friends of his that would bring him back home, but can he leave Ava and what they have started behind, or would Ava be willing to follow Beckett? You'll just have to read this AWEMAZING book from new to me author Terra Kelly to find out, and believe me you will be glad you did!!
I’m in love with Ava & Beck. They’re sweet yet full of attitude, know exactly what they want yet willing to be selfless. They’re just great. Plus the food they cook? Omg mouthwatering! Overall a great addition to the Cocky Hero’s club & a must read.
If I told myself, years ago, that I would love reading I would laugh at my face. Seriously. A few years back, thanks to Facebook, I discovered the wonders of foreign writers, and oh boy, since then I've devoured hundreds of books. In that journey, I discovered this amazing author and it was love at the first book. Terra Kelly is this sweet girl, that puts her heart inside each book she writes. She has given me some of my favorite books and like the greedy girl that I am, I always want more. Bitter Bartender is her latest release and explores the lives of Beckett and Ava. Guys, this book is a part of the Cocky Hero Club. Have you seen the books that are included? Go for it guys. Just go. Ava had one hell of a day. Her boss was being a jerk and she needed a stiff drink after the day from hell. When she enters a bar... Beckett left his hometown with the promise of an amazing job as a chef, but that went flying out of the window. After that, since he hadn't found a new job as a chef, he saw himself being good a bartender because he needed to pay his bills. One day at the job, this stunning redhead enters the bar and... OK, this is so not fair... Not fair at all... Why did "The End" appear so soon? Seriously? Why? Amazing plot, very well written, super engaging and so sweet. The characters worked perfectly with each other and you can feel the love becoming stronger and stronger. These two were made for each other, and you'll fall in love with them. I was so into the book that once I started, I couldn't put it down. Guys, I read it in one sitting. And why do I crave cheesecake? Lol Read and find out. Lol After the dark books that I've read from other authors, I needed this sweet story to brighten my day. And the hot stuff... Oh boy... It was there... And the cover... Hot muffin. Now let's be serious. Terra, what have you done with sweet Terra? This book was a hot woman... I knew you had it in you... Great book girl and I can't wait for the next one. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Bitter bartender by Terra Kelly is definitely one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time ! Laugh out loud funny , angsty , humorous, sexy , fun , steamy, witty banter , unexpected surprises, insta love ,second chances , heartbreaking and heartwarming, off the charts chemistry and two lead characters that you seriously cannot help but to fall in love with . I just adored every single moment of Ava and Beckett’s emotional rollercoaster of a love story so freaking much. As per usual anther fantastic addition to the cocky hero world
Beckett is down on his luck stuck in New York working as a bartender when he should be living the dream as a head chef. You see things didn’t go according to plan when he moved over from Charlotte and he knows he needs to leave NYC asap. But when a pretty redhead walks through the door of the bar his luck is about to change in more ways than one.
If you’ve read the Man Card series then you would have met Beckett before. It’s been great diving back into that world with some familiar characters popping up. Looking forward to the next one.
I read this book voluntarily for an honest review.
What a delightful and fun story! Ava and Becks had instant hot chemistry and just clicked right from the start. This was such a sweet fun read and I loved how much they laughed together! Both unhappy where they were in their lives so when an opportunity arises with Becks’ best friends they can’t believe how everything falls into place seamlessly. All the food throughout the story sounded delicious! A very sweet read that I highly recommend! I’m voluntarily leaving an honest review for this complimentary copy of this book
Welcome back to the writing world Terra Kelly. Bitter Bartender delighted all of my senses. I laughed, I swooned, I drooled. Beckett and Ava have awesome chemistry. Food and Romance go hand in hand. I loved this story and the great HEA. I enjoyed how Terra added her little man card references. I am so going to try the Baked Alaska recipe. I received a copy, and I'm voluntarily giving my honest review.
Beckett and Ava were a delight to read about! I loved their witty and fun banter back and forth. These Two also had a super hot chemistry that left me fanning myself. Great story line and well-written supporting characters. This was another great addition to the Cocky Hero Club world.
I enjoyed reading this this delightfully fun book by Terra. This sweet and swoony read had me hooked from the start and I devoured it. It was well written and left me with a smile on my face. Beckett and Ava were just so delightful and perfect for each other. This book is part of The Cocky Hero Club but can be read as a standalone. I received this book as an arc for my honest opinion.
Ava is not living her best life with a boss that screams all the time and no thoughts on how to change her life for the better. She decides that it's "a margarita kind of night" and goes to No-Way Jose for a jalapeno margarita. Fate is on her side because Beckett is on duty at the bar! Beckett moved to New York to chase his dreams of being a chef but quickly discovered that life can throw you some curveballs. He doesn't love his job at No-Way Jose but he doesn't want to tell everyone back home that he failed to be a head chef. He is immediately drawn to Ava when she comes into No-Way Jose for her margarita.
This is a short story about two adults that take the time to get to know each other before deciding to go all in with each other. The author manages to give a little bit of information that explains why they are both stuck in their jobs while also showing how they are working toward making changes. Sure, the reader doesn't get tons of background or superfluous details but that's okay because the story moves alone are a good pace and gives the pertinent details. I like that both of the characters are self-aware. I like that characters from the Man Card series show up in the story. I like that the characters spend time getting to know each other (even though a lot of it occurs off the page).
If you want to read a story set in New York and North Carolina that has two adults who act like reasonable adults, give this a try. I suggest reading the Man Card stories first because the characters play a major role in this story. I will definitely read more from this author.
I really enjoyed this story, the characters Beckett and Ava have great chemistry from the first meeting in the bar that Beckett is working at to the happily ever after ending. The banter between them in this book really gives you a good chuckle or laugh depending on the scene. The recipes that Beckett and Ava create really make you want to create the items as well. Also both characters come from similar backgrounds and dreams for their future while dealing with current situations that are not ideal, but they fight and move to achieve their goals/dream jobs. If you've never read Terra Kelly I highly recommend her books as she really involves creative and delicious food recipes along with sexy romance between characters. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is a short and sweet book about two people, dissatisfied with their jobs, find each other and manage to bring the others' walls down. Beckett followed his dreams of becoming a chef to New York, but it didn't work out as he hoped. Ava is stuck in a job where her boss yells at her for every little thing she does, or doesn't do, and it's time to get away. She feels like a margarita and, ironically, finds a bar named No-way Jose and, of course, Beckett is on duty. The attraction is immediate, but Ava's not ready for any sort of commitment, but she's encouraged to leave her name and number for Beckett to get in touch. It's a sweet story, without the drama (thank heaven), and with a very happy ending!
Beckett is working as a bartender in New York - not what he wants to be doing since he originally moved to be a chef. That job was taken away and he had to do something. Ava is working at a job that she's not thrilled with. One day, Ava went into the bar that Beckett is working. He really was attracted to her but she was reluctant to get involved but a man encouraged her to leave her number. That's the beginning of their friendship and then romance. Beckett cooked and baked for Ava who didn't do anything even though her mother gave her all the great utensils to work in the kitchen. I liked how Beckett and Ava got along. Will they be able to talk about their dreams and will they work out for their relationship? I really enjoyed Ava and Beckett. I also liked reading about the food that they made together. I received an advance copy to read and review early. I'm leaving my honest review.
Beckett left his hometown to go to New York City to fulfill his dream of becoming a pastry chef. Little did he dream that he would end up being a bartender listening to everyone’s problem. Ava showed up one day and they talked a little, but she got scared and left but not before she left her name and phone number. Would they meet again. Ava was in a job working for a boss that yelled so much that he couldn’t keep a secretary and when that happened, Ava had to take care of his office needs till they could hire another. She wasn’t happy with her job, but it was a job, right? The more Beckett showed his love of cooking, the more Ava supported his dream. A really good story.
Ava had had a bad day, a very bad day and needed a drink, at a bar that was recommended, she found a very tasty guy in a very colourful shirt and he was hot. After her first drink which was delicious, the bartender called Beckett was going to make a second drink after he had given her a small sample of his favourite drink, he had to go into the kitchen, Ava was getting cold feet and left before he came back into the bar, but she did leave her name and number on a serviette. Already regretting her quick departure. Lovely short story with a happy ending
Bartender Beckett hates his job. He came to NYC for a dream job that evaporated. Now he works to live instead of doing what he loves. When a gorgeous redhead walks into the restaurant he works at, things change, a bit. Then his best friends offer him a wonderful opportunity. But it would mean moving away from said redhead. What to do.
Secretary Ava hates her job. When she needs to get away from it for the afternoon, she sits down at Beckett’s bar. They hit it off well, really well. Could that include moving away from the only city she’s ever lived in?
Bitter Bartender is a fun addition to the Cocky Hero Club! This was my first book by Terra Kelly; I enjoyed her quirky characters and swoony romance! The tasty foods created in this love story were nearly as mouth-watering as the chef, Beckett.
CJ Bloom and Aaron Shedlock were delightful as Ava and Beckett. Aaron’s portrayal of the broody, Hawaiian shirt wearing, smoldering chef was knee-buckling. CJ was charming as the sassy, endearing, relatable Ava. If you’re looking for a fun and steamy listen, I highly recommend!
This is a wonderful addition to this amazing series, and this is Beckett and Ava’s story. Beckett is a chef who is working as a bartender, and when Ava walks into the bar, the sparks fly, and there is an instant attraction between them. This is a well written slow burn story, with undeniable chemistry, drama, friendships, romance, humor, witty banter, and love, which leads to a sweet and entertaining page turner. I received a free copy of this book via Give Me Books and the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Beckett went to New York to work as a chef, but when he got there everything went wrong and he finds himself working as a bartender and wanting to return to his hometown. Ava is also stuck in a job she doesn't love, and when she walks into the bar Beckett works at, their connection is immediate. Between drinks and desserts, they get to know each other better and their plans begin to change as well. I loved the story and the characters. I highly recommend the reading.
quick read. so fun!! i love the bartender quirky doodles at the beginning of each chapter. i love the small things in books like that. cute read. fun characters. happy ending.
