In the glamorous world of ballroom, love and dancing do not always mix.
Professional dancer Anita Goodman has learned that lesson the hard way. With her studio and her reputation on the line, she has to take a chance on the last person she ever wanted to partner with: her best friend.
Patrick O’Leary has loved Anita since high school, but he has languished in the Friend Zone for long enough. He will take this last chance to prove to her that love is greater than winning.
Neither of them realize that conquering their rising attraction won’t be their biggest obstacle. Someone does not want them to be together, and will stop at nothing to get their way.
Anita is a professional ballroom dancer with her own studio, while her best friend Patrick, is retired from dancing, and doing his own thing. They've been best friends since high school, and he has also had secret feelings for her for that long as well. Anita has her own secret feelings for him, but she denies them to herself to friend zone him firmly, but when she needs his help (since he's home again) things take a turn finally. On top of the slow burn from friends to lovers, there's a villain out there who is all about harming her, and it provided mystery to take away my frustration with Anita throughout. I loved said villains POV, and it doesn't take long to figure out who it is, however I felt like it was tidied up too quickly but that's just me. I did really love the original aspect of ballroom dancing with the added in competition because I don't think I've ever read that type of romance, and I cannot wait for more. All in all it was an entertaining read that I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Ballroom Competitions are all about glamour, glitz, and an absurd amount of rhinestones to create all that glitter. Nothing short of etiquette, decorum and utmost perfection, ballroom dancers are a unique breed.
Sometimes this attracts the crazies.
Patrick O’Leary is no stranger to this unique world. He just wants to be back on the dance floor, this time with the one he has loved since high school, gorgeous professional dancer Anita Goodman.
With everything on the line, her studio, her reputation, and her heart, Anita begrudgingly agrees to compete with her best friend Patrick. Try as she might, to keep the dancing professional and focused on the task, Patrick makes it difficult to ignore all of the glances, touches and feelings. Anita’s resolve slowly crumbles.
These two have to pair up not only on the dance floor, but to solve a series of sinister notes and small crimes against them and the studio. Who is out to cause them harm and why?
Read this Dancing with the Stars-esque book as it all culminates at the competition, of course. It’s, it's a ballroom blitz, Yeah, it's a Ballroom Blitz!
I loved the setting of this book. It made it so unique and different. I felt the author really knew the world she was setting her story in and the terminology was spot on. I thought the dancing really added to the romance and was a great tension builder. Anita and Patrick were adorable together and I really enjoyed their chemistry. I think the stalker plot and dance competition added excitement to the story. I think stalker plot was resolved a little too quickly but at the same time it wasn't the center of the story. I did enjoy the dance competition though! Overall, this was a fun time! I would recommend this for readers who enjoy friends to lovers, slow burn, small town, angsty romance, some suspense and low steam.
“Ballroom Blitz” is a fun and fast-paced story of old flames finding each other again in an unfortunate situation. Ms. Cross writes her main characters very well.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book was just the thing I needed. It was a fast and easy read, perfect for getting me out of a slump. I really enjoyed the mystery and suspense throughout the novel. I also really enjoyed the development of the main characters relationship. Overall, I think this is a great ballroom dance read!
Well, this book has everything - Murder, Mystery, Stalking, Red Herrings, Unrequited Love, as well as Sequins, Dancing, and Romance.
Anita & Patrick were friends since they were in school, and then worked together at Anita’s dance studio until Patrick moved to NYC. On his return, they agree to pair up for a dance competition, then things start going wrong… The book had me hooked from start to finish - a real page turner. The dance moves are described in detail, as are the costumes and music, and I almost felt as if I was watching a show on tv. The tension of the characters being threatened by a person unknown gripped me, and I was anxious for that person to be unmasked. Great story, well plotted, and more than worthy of 5 stars.
I received an Advance Review Copy of this book, and am leaving this honest review voluntarily.
A great novel by Natalie Cross! (I almost wrote "great debut novel," but I think it's a story that even oft-published writers would be proud to have produced).
Set in a world that has been covered more by film than print (see Shall We Dance, but the Japanese version, please, or my all-time favorite, Strictly Ballroom), the book spends more time on the day-to-day than performing, and that's okay--even good. I do think there were some missed opportunities though.
Anita is a pro ballroom dancer who owns a dance studio. Patrick is retired from the pro circuit and now is a writer and influencer (honestly, I'm a little confused about what he does for a living). The two have been BFFs since high school, and Patrick has been unabashedly--at least to everyone except Anita--head over heels in love with her since then. For his part, Patrick is perfect. He's handsome, built, dances like the pro that he is, and is kind to everybody. Anita has a lot of feelings for him too, but she denies them to herself because she doesn't think she deserves him.
Anita's insecurity is one part that was a little confusing to me. She mentions it more than once, at least to herself, that her father isn't proud of her for not becoming a doctor like him. But there wasn't enough for me to really see that in action, especially since her father never makes an actual appearance in the book. Since her father's disapproval is a big part of why she denies her feelings for Patrick, I think at least one scene between her and her father would have been helpful.
The book is sold as a mystery as well, and that's evidenced by the prologue where we first meet--without seeing--our villain. I think the mystery/suspense component of this novel is underplayed more than it should be, and it resolves much too comically and quickly. The writer gives us several suspects to begin with, but pretty soon it's clear who the guilty party is, and the author doesn't hide it. But while everything else in the novel seems so realistic, the villain has a very Dastardly Dan feeling about them. They do some pretty creepy things, and I feel like we deserve a more viable baddie.
But back to dancing. Perhaps I was expecting the cliché, but I wanted to see more of Anita and Patrick on the dance floor. There's a big deal made about the sexiness of the rumba, and I wanted to see them either combust on the dance floor leading to great sex or combust in bed leading to a great dance. Instead, they spend too much time with Patrick holding back those three powerful little words and Anita running like hell to avoid him having the chance.
Overall though, this is a really great book that was super fun to read. It's being marketed as the first in the series, and I'm not sure who would star in book two, but I'm definitely on board.
I received an ARC of this book for free from the author and BookSirens. I'm writing this review voluntarily, and it reflects my honest opinion. Thanks!
Don't get me wrong, the way this book was written, was absolutely breathless. The descriptions, the dances, it was art on pages I must say.
And boy oh boy. My sweet adorable love-struck Patrick. He deserves the world. I just wanna cuddle him and hug him so tight. His devotion is just chefs kiss
HE DESERVES FAR BETTER THAN THAT ANNOYING FMC. I swear.
I tried to like her I really really did, but man, it was such a slow burn and she is such an IDIOT. He did SO MUCH for her, he always stuck by her, always ensuring that she is okay. HE'S SO KIND AND LOVING and she is so damn oblivious I swear I actually agreed with a certain, 'villan' in this book ad wanted them to actually do something bad to her tbvh. She was just ugh!
When it finally seemed like she had some sense in her brain. Shit happened and she reverted back to being stupid. After a certain scene where she said something UNFORGIVABLE to my sweet Patrick, I was ready to DNF the book but only pushed through for him.
I mean how could you simply push away someone who basically worshiped the very ground you walk on?!! Like - "He wanted to kneel at her feet, worship at her altar" .
Bless his loyal heart.
This book had me really riled up and arguing with it. Which is quite a good thing I must say. When the author uproots such emotions from you whether good or bad. When it makes you feel .
I must mention once again, the descriptions of the dances in this book were hypnotizing. So ofc I must end it with that ~
For the closing~ "The last chorus was a rapid succession of mixed dance moves, spins, all with her pressed against him, so close he could taste her breath mixing with his, and then there was the final spectacular star lift. He held her on her side, her arms and legs extended as he spun her two, three four times, then tucked her into both of his arms, still spinning, gaze fixed on hers, slowly gently set her on her feet to the ground. He knelt before her, reverent, arms around her waist and her palms extended against his temples"
So, why these rankings. Overall, the book has a very good story line, and the suspense level is adequate to keep me engaged. I read this book in roughly 2 days' time with a lot of interruptions (unfortunately), but it was incredibly difficult to put down.
Anita has had a life full of disappointments, or so she thinks. Men have let her down, she has disappointed her family with life choices, and struggles with her own self-worth. Dancing is her passion; she followed her dreams while disappointing others. Anita owns her own studio and just when things are looking bleak. Her best friend, Patrick shows up in time to save the day..... if she will let them. It's a big IF.
Patrick was friend zoned since high school even though he has been desperately in love with Anita for years, even going so far as to move away to see if distance helped. Patrick is an amazing dancer as well but found happiness in his own influencer lifestyle.
Competitions are coming that could make or break Anita's studio, Patrick wants to help but there seems to be someone standing in the way outside of Anita's fears of her own failure. This stalker won't stop at much and it is heavily implied that they may have killed before.
The ballroom terminology is perfect and very descriptive. This added depth to the novel. There was a lot of will they or won't they angst but less spice than I am used to, but the story was cute and an easy read. The writing style is written in almost a third person style writing, but it does demonstrate multiple POV including the unknown stalker. That can be somewhat confusing; however, it works within the story line. Overall, I was very pleasantly surprised by this wonderfully written book.

Ballroom Blitz by Natalie Cross is a dazzling romantic suspense novel involving ballroom dancer & studio owner, Anita Goodman, whose dancing partner recently abandoned her while at the same time, her gorgeous best friend returns to town & he’s evoking feelings that go beyond friendly. The ballroom community was also recently rocked by the death of one of the best dancers & now there’s more havoc, creepy messages & scary situations happening at every turn. Romantic suspense is one of my favorite combinations because you get the romance, which I obviously love, but in the same book, you also get a thrilling mystery to keep you on your toes. This book is on the shorter side, which is great because it is jam packed. This is a small town based book & because of this, the police force is very small, so a lot of the sophisticated technology of bigger areas is absent but I think that makes sense. I love the fact that this book involved dancing & specifically ballroom dancing. I’ve never read a book with it & I think it’s such an interesting subject. Because the novel is on the shorter side, the end wraps up very quickly. The mystery & the romance all pull together in a matter of pages so it felt a bit rushed. Something neat that the author did was have excerpts set from the “villain’s” point of view, which I always think is a clever & spooky touch to hear the evil thoughts sprinkled throughout the mystery. I was also a bit surprised at the identity, which is great. If you’re looking for a quick & easy enjoyable ballroom-dancing romantic suspense, then I would check out Ballroom Blitz by Natalie Cross.
Massive thanks to The Wild Rose Press & Grey’s Promotions for the arc, which I voluntarily read & reviewed. All thoughts & opinions are my own.
Ballroom Blitz is the book in the Series Dancesport Mysteries by Natalie Cross. Ballroom Blitz is the book in the Series Dancesport Mysteries by Natalie Cross. Thank you to Booksirens for an ARC of this book As a former ballroom dance Natalie is spot on with the descriptions of owning a dance business, teaching students, the competitions, and what is needed to win. Anita is the ballroom owner and at the last minute is going to compete with her childhood friend Patrick, who, of course, has been in love with her since high school. Chaos breaks out when a stalker is getting more and more vicious to both Patrick and Anita. This was a quick paced mystery that makes a great cozy mystery. Loved Patrick’s character and how the women reacted to him. Very true to life. Anita, not so much. In order to be a championship dancer, you need a strong sense of self-esteem, and Anita was very lacking in this department. It seemed like every 5 minutes she was doubting herself, and it became annoying. The minor characters are great and I like how she gave us some of their background. All in all, it is a cozy with a different setting, fast paced, and enjoyable. I hope there is a second book to follow.

I generally enjoy all the topics included in Ballroom Blitz (romance, mild mystery, ballroom dancesport), but I found myself struggling to keep my attention on the story. The story pace was slow-moving for me, and I was becoming frustrated with the “Will they? Won’t they?” angst between Anita and Patrick. (Note: I really did like how we were openly aware of each of the main characters’ thoughts/feelings/desires throughout. But because I knew their inner feelings, I was frustrated that it took so long for them to act on their desires.) I completely acknowledge that some readers enjoy this trope, and I do think that many readers will appreciate how this trope is written in Ballroom Blitz, but it simply wasn’t for me. However, I did enjoy that most people around Anita and Patrick (like Anita’s mom, their friends, other dancers) know that they should end up together, but there wasn’t TOO much meddling.
I would recommend Ballroom Blitz to anyone looking for a Ballroom romance, but especially someone who enjoys a slower-paced pining friend-to-lovers story.
This book does centre on ballroom dancing but more on the dancers and in a very minor way the actual dances that they do and practise. It took me awhile to get into the story. Some of the settings could be more descriptive around the Danceport Academy and the competition preparation. There was a lot of cleaning up and setting up for a party but no description of the actual dancers being trained by Anita.
The Keystone Dance Competition event and the contestants involved was a bit better.
I felt the dialogue sections could be improved by more actual dialogue speaking parts for the characters and less use of the introspection thoughts of the main characters.
The plot was good and did have some suspense and did reach a climax. I thought Anita Goodman was a bit too indecisive and not a very strong female sleuth with the way she worried too much. It took her way too long to be concerned about her dance partner, Patrick O’Leary being missing on the competition day.

Ballroom Blitz is the first in the Dancesport Mysteries series. I thoroughly enjoyed this book; it is easy to read with an engaging cast of characters. The characters are likeable, realistic, and well-written. The chemistry between Anita and Patrick was palpable and I love how they interact with one another. The supporting characters were fun, and their backstories gave them depth. I found myself wanting to be their friend too.
Secretly I’ve always wanted to be a professional ballroom dancer and enjoyed being transported to this world due to the excellent word building. The author did an excellent job of creating suspense using dance creating the perfect vehicle for wondering will they or won’t they take it to the next level.
Written from the perspective of someone who has lived the life. I felt like the descriptions accurately described the world of competitive ballroom dancing and what it takes to win. I highly recommend and look forward to reading more of this series.
Ballroom Blitz is Book 1 of the Dancesport Mysteries series. I had no idea what to expect as I know absolutely nothing about Ballroom Dancing. This book is so well written that it really does not matter. The suspense and intrigue of the plot when combined with some really cool and well-written characters made me completely forget my initial concerns. From the very beginning I was rooting for our MCs to get their crap together, communicate and figure out what the reader knows right away which is that these two have some seriously hawt chemistry and need to be much more than just best friends.
Some portions of the book felt repetitive but that is probably just because I was impatient for our couple to find their happily ever after. There are some really fun plot twists which kept me on my toes.
If you are a fan of friends to lovers, spicy scenes and psychological drama then you need to read this book!

After catching the blurb for Ballroom Blitz, it sounded different and intriguing and I knew it would be my first read from Natalie Cross. The opening alone was a bit sinister. After that, things slowed down a bit...
I liked Anita. She was talented and kind, resilient and lonely. Trying keep her professional life away from her personal one. Except with Patrick being back in town and her dance partner for the showcase it was all she could do to reel in her emotions. Same for Patrick.
Especially when the threats and attacks started rolling in. All of his instincts told him to keep Anita close while not pushing too hard for fear of pushing her away for good.
I found myself wanting more of these two actually being together. Not as just dance partners or friends but as a couple. That being said, Anita and Patrick's slow burn friends to lovers romance was dangerous and the longing was well worth the wait.
I love reading a book where the author is passionate about the subject matter and/or setting. This book is set in the world of DanceSport and while I've caught the odd episode of Dancing With The Stars, it's not a world I inhabit. I loved being able to read and get to know a little about this world and the dedication and hard work that it takes to live in it. I felt that the mystery aspect was overshadowed by the romance side of the story, with the relationship between Patrick and Anita very much centre stage. I liked being able to see things from both their points of view, but also from the villain of the story, which made it a bit different to all of the others. As for the romance, it just didn't grab me like I wanted it to. Anita spent so much time pushing Patrick away, and Patrick spent so much time desperately trying to be what Anita wanted, but neither of them bothered to talk to the other. For supposed best friends, it was a real disconnect.
This is definitely not the kind of book you should start at 2am, especially if you have to do anything the next day. I made the mistake and spent most of the early morning in the world of ballroom dancing and unrequited love.
I was hooked on this book from the first sentence, the writing is melodic and the plot was well-paced, even though there were a lot of moving parts. At it's center, it tells the tale of Anita and Patrick, two best friends and former dance partners. When Anita's slimy ex-partner Mikhail leaves her for another dancer, three weeks before a competition, Patrick steps in to save the day. Oh, and there is a murder and cyber-stalking-- but what's a few felonies when young love is on the line?

4.5 stars, 3.5 steamy kisses ARC COPY REVIEW Book #1 in the Dancesport Mysteries series
best friends, murder mystery, mystery, stalker, death threats, dance partners, sexual tension, ballroom dancing, ballroom competition, romantic suspense, suspense, friends to lovers, kidnapping, unrequited love, small-town romance, slow-burn
loved this slow burn friends to dance partners to lovers romantic suspense story where omg Patrick was such a irresistibly charming and attractive boyfriend material to the only girl he's ever loved but she's been in some denial that I very much disagree with because she's missing out and it's her fault. Anita girl like you eagerly wake up to drink coffee wake up and jump on Patrick with his cute dimple and body of a fit dancer.
I am a new reader of romance, my preference leaning toward historical fiction, however, I was recently introduced to the genre and I must say that this book and Cross’ writing style did not disappoint—it’s romance with a twist of intrigue. Two passages I especially loved were: “She presented the world a buttoned-up, elite athlete, while inside she was a neurotic marshmallow. He definitely had a taste for marshmallows.” And, “If he was a man dying of thirst, she would be his salt water.” Tastefully written with a slow burn, Ballroom Blitz is the tale of a woman who must learn to accept her true feelings for her long-time friend and dance partner. So, curl up in a comfy chair and enjoy.
When Anita's dance partner leaves her high and dry only weeks before an important competition she reluctantly turns to Patrick, her best friend, to fill in the gap. He desperately wants to get out of the friend zone that he has been languishing in since high school. The vivid descriptions of the dances and costumes sweep you onto the dance floor beside them as they try to convey sex appeal between them while dancing but denying it exists in reality. When a stalker threatens Anita and gushes over Patrick, the dance becomes more dangerous than anyone expected. This is a dramatic page turner that will make you want to learn to Rumba! The second book in this series just came out and I can't wait to read it. Kudos to Ms. Cross for a wonderful story! Highly recommended!
Ballroom Blitz is Book 1 in the Danceport Mysteries by Natalie Cross. I thought that this was a very enjoyable story. The author delves into the world of Ballroom dancing. Anita owns a successful dance studio but she has lost her dance partner right before a major competition. Enter Patrick to save the day! I felt that Natalie Cross did an amazing job developing the story. The characters are so good and the heat between Anita and Patrick is just right. While the romance is blooming , I did not expect that someone would disappear! Ballroom Blitz is fantastic! I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
Talk about suspenseful! Anita is a dancer and instructor. She loves what she does. When her recent partner drops her right before a showcase she is in search of a new partner. Patrick is a former dancer who now focuses on social media content. When he jumps at the opportunity to help Anita she’s unsure this can work. These two have hidden feelings for each other and won’t admit to it! So we have the couple with the amazing connection, they we have a crazy stalker who keeps sending them messages. Who can the stalker be? Who is the stalker really after? I enjoyed The characters and the story. This suspenseful slow burn was a great read!
This is the first in a new series, and this is Anita and Patrick’s story. Patrick is a retired dancer and is now a writer and influencer, who has loves Anita since high school, but he is firmly in the friend zone. Anita is a professional dancer, who has her own dance studio, and when her reputation is on the line, she turns to her best friend Patrick for help. This is a good story which is a slow burn, friends / lovers’ romance story, with tension, danger, suspense, intrigue, family, friendships, mystery, threats, a stalker, insecurities, and love, which leads to an enjoyable page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
As a former professional ballroom dancer, I was eager to get a chance to read an ARC of Ballroom Blitz and it did not disappoint! Although the book was short, it was filled to the brim with action, romance and suspense. The ballroom references were accurate, a detail which the dancer in me appreciated and I felt like I was transported back into the ballroom world. The the romance between Anita and Patrick was sweet and slow burn and the interspersed chapters from the villain’s point of view added the perfect touch of evil and intensity to add mystery to the novel. For anyone looking for a book with romance, mystery, and dancing, I would recommend grabbing a copy of this book.
I really liked this novel. It was thrilling and suspenseful and I loved the story concentrating on the glitzy and glamorous world of ballroom dancing. I love thrillers and psychological thrillers and if you combine a thrilling and exciting plot with dancing, it is a perfect read for me.
I did dancing for 14 years, and started off with dancing ballroom and Latin dances like rhumba, samba and cha cha stole my heart. I love watching dance films and reading novels to do with dancing and ballroom. I’m giving this fantastic novel 4 stars as it had the right amount of dancing, life in the studio, a thrilling plot, romance and I loved discovering a new author whose writing style I like.
First time book read by this author and she's among my faves! Thoroughly enjoyed her writing, the emotional drama, the strong intrigue and mystery along with the lighter moments and smiles throughout this story.
Characters were easy to like as well. Best friends Anita and Patrick, both secretly adoring and falling in love with each other unbeknownst to the other, was a fun aspect of this story as well. Enjoyed the dance theme throughout and learned more about something have enjoyed watching on TV for a long time.
Great read, full of entertainment throughout and highly recommend.

I want to give this so many more than 5 stars. It’s amazing!!! I am a huge fan of dance and to find a book set in the ballroom/Latin world with mystery, suspense, romance, drama. In the words of Craig Revel Horwood A-Maze-ing and Fab-u-Lous!!!
This book kept me hooked from the start, absolutely loved all the dance references . The story is strong and has a really nice flow to it, our lead female has some character flaws and demons to work through, the lead male is just swoon worthy.
This is a must read book for anyone who loves dance, romance and suspense
They should have emphasised Anita's reasonings a little bit more. Her history isn't good with her partners. She like dated all of them?🙄 And now can't risk it with Patrick makes sense also she has some issues with being a disappointment but it too wasn't emphasised hence her character came out unnecessarily rude and narcissistic. Even Patrick asked why was she being nice to him lol. Also the perpetrator is so obvious.
You get threatening message for your mom and you don't even call her to check if she's okay?
Such a dumb book. Should've been half it's size.

In the cutthroat world of ballroom dancing, not only do you need shoes that won’t make you slip you also have to watch your back!
This book is spot on about the hazards and animosity of competitive ballroom dancing. Yes, there’s all the glitz and shiny, sparkling gowns, but Anita is being targeted simply because she is the competition. At the same time, there is a hesitant physical attraction building with her dance partner. So yep, you get two great storylines in one: who is out to get her, and will she fall in love?
