The central tenet of private security is protecting the client. What happens when that client is a traitor?
"A perfect cocktail of intrigue, spycraft, and blistering action."
After serving his country in Detachment-Delta, Vince Carver parlayed his elite skills into heading the kinetic protection division of a Silicon Valley security firm. Life in the private sector is simple until the routine escort of a semiconductor billionaire ends with a deadly attack on American soil.
Before Carver knows it, he's embedded in a world of slick intrigue and fast lies. Stuck protecting a client who might be a traitor, coordinating with a foreign team he can't trust, and answering to an agency who refuses to give answers of their own, it doesn't take long to remember why he left intelligence work in the first place.
But going from private security to national security renews Carver with a purpose he had lost. He might just be the perfect man for the job and the key to a timeless truth. High-tech countermeasures and cameras can never replace boots on the ground or the indifferent precision of a man with a gun.
From high-stakes business deals in Taipei to a strategic installation nestled in America's Appalachians, National Security doesn't stop to breathe until the last page. Fans of Ryan, Reacher, Bourne, and Bond will find a hero in Carver.
National Security takes on the current issue of spy craft in big business.
The Chinese see the future of semi conductors as a challenge for their spies. Technical expertise, not withstanding, they know the market hinges on the quartz supply. National Security explores the possibility of betrayal and greed. The main character, Vince Carter, relying on previous CIA experience, uncovers the plot and tries to stop it. He knows that a break in the supply chain could spell economic disaster for the USA. Interesting read. Great visuals from the prose. Character development could be improved. Overall a sound story.
Highly enjoyed this novel. It is well plotted, has some surprises, and lots of action. Should be on your must read list. The story has many more twists and turns than expected. There is a lot of information provided regarding the semi-conductor chip industry. I personally had no knowledge of this and learned a lot! I encourage you to read this book and more by Mr. Sloane.
As a new reader to Sloane’s work, this was a very good start to a series. His writing is mostly uncluttered and moves the plot forward. The ending was a little too tidy and Carver’s character is a little generic, but moving on to book 2!
Very good start to this series. Nice plot development, moves quickly, lots of twists and turns, solid characters. I really liked the semiconductor setting, felt well researched and grounded. I'm excited to keep going with the next one.
I liked the plot, the author's writing style, the action, and the twists and turns at the end were believable. The author has a keen grasp of the semiconductor business and the players involved. Looking forward to his book # 2.
Fresh, current story. I enjoyed reading it. Well written and edited. The research and story details wove together to create a plausible and entertaining plot with good characters.
Action was slow and rather discombobulating. Everyone seemed to be on the take and it took what seemed like forever to finally account for everyone’s loyalty. Vince didn’t appear to be very heroic. Easily swayed by a pretty woman.
Twisting and turning plots, edge of your seat suspense and action. A real man's man will do whatever is necessary and Walt Sloan's Vince Carver is a book you don't want to put down until you've finished it.
Sadly, I generally have to finish a book once I start it. Regret having started this. Ridiculous characters Ragged plotting Horrible male/female relationships A general train-wreck, in my opinion
My rating: 3 stars. There was too much technical jargon in the first 50% of the book that kept putting me off. Then there was the fact that the main character slept with a woman from the other camp … kinda made him a bit of a sleaze

The plot was too convoluted for my taste. The characters were okay. I rarely give less than 3 stars but I was just not excited about this book. I will say, though, it was a fast read.
Kept me engaged start to finish. Found some of the twists impossible to predict, but enjoyable just the same. Will look for the next book in the series
