The Stolen Heir and the Exiled Prince

Rate this book
All Alaine Turner wants is to find the family who gave her up as a baby—and the day she passes her driving test, she leaves her adoptive family to seek out her blood relatives. Instead, she collides with a strange man, who transfers a piece of magic into her. Suddenly, she’s no longer in her small town in Washington State, but on another world called Coran, in a city that despises Gifted people. The magic running through her veins saves her from the hangman’s noose, but not from the vengeful hands of the crown prince.

Prince Mikael has returned home to Caledonia from a temporary exile in the north, determined to become the prince his people will fear and respect. Vowing to spend the rest of his days bringing the Gifted to justice, he finds himself conflicted when he discovers that his sister is one of them. To make matters worse, a young woman he sent to the gallows reveals a level of power he’s never seen before. Torn between his father’s approval and protecting his sister, Mikael must make a choice that will decide his future—and the lives of Caledonia's Gifted—even if it means enduring exile and anguish once again.

Magic will bring Alaine and Mikael together, but can they put their drastic differences aside to help one another in a world that wants to tear them apart?

I absolutely fell in love with The Stolen Heir and the Exiled Prince!

*The characters!
*The world-building!
*The fast-paced action and moral dilemmas faced by the characters!

McPherson's protagonists (16-year-old Alaine from USA, Earth) and 19-year-old Prince Mikael (from a kingdom in Coran--a different universe than Earth--hence the series title The Coran Chronicles).

It's dual 3rd POV, and the chapters alternate between Alaine (who is on a personal quest to find her biological parents in Seattle) and Prince Mikael who has returned home to his father's kingdom from exile and is determined to prove to King Salamon of Caledonia that he has seen the error of his former sympathies for the illegal use of magic. You can probably guess that these two will find themselves pitted against one another, and it's soooooooo good. You don't have to wait long either. McPerhson keeps the pace moving in this story. By Alaine's second chapter (the third chapter), she's in Coran and dealing with the shock of being in somekind of medieval times.

McPherson opens with a prologue from another character's POV. DON'T SKIP IT!!

I know you want to get to Alaine's POV, but this info is important. McPherson plunges us right into the magic of her Coran world and we quickly get to some high drama. Fileus is a magic user and he's quite chummy with one of the Gods of this world, a guy named Arkhill who tells Fileus that he's had dreams of a child will be the end of all the Gifted. Remember, the Gifted are already in precarious position in many kingdoms where they are executed for using their magic. Fileus is sent to end the life of this child, born to a king and queen in Carnet. But he can't. Of course, he can't. Fileus isn't evil.

So what is he to do though? Well, Fileus can teleport to other universes, you see...

So can you guess what happens? Consider the title

And obviously, Alaine is destined to meet Prince Mikael--though they don't meet how you might expect.

Let's look at some tropes to whet your appetite more:

*portal fantasy (*Though Alaine doesn't go through a portal so much as is abducted by a Gifted aka Fileus who takes her to Coran, a world where some of the inhabitants can wield magic called Gifts)

*magic use is outlawed

*broody, conflicted prince with tragic past

*plucky, courageous heroine with magic

*prisoner vs. captor

*enemies to .... ???

*quest to find one's family .... beginnings of a found family

*sibling love, protective older brother (platonic, people, it's not that kind of book)***

***Mia is Prince Mikael's sister, and this little subplot stole my heart as well. Mia is younger and hasn't seen her older brother in years. They need to rebuild their relationship, but Mikael learns some secrets about Mia that only make him want to protect her more... but leave him vulnerable to his cousin's scheme to become heir to the kingdom and his father's wrath.

When you get to the end of the book, we return to Fileus's POV and the consequences of his action. Gods don't like being disobeyed.

I was both satisfied with the resolution but also want the second book in my hands.

My only unsatisfied desire was some romance between the two leads... there's potential (I think) and I understand the situations they were in... (imprisoned, tortured) they weren't ready. BUT I have HIGH HOPES for book 2.

The author seems to be working on it and some novellas in set in the same universe of Coran, so we are in luck!

**I read an early version of this novel but also purchased my own e-book I loved it so much!

This book is written in multiple point of views, and it really enhanced the story. The world building was to the point that I felt like I was there in Coran. I loved how fast pace the book was at times, but it was never too fast. If you like a conflicted prince that had a tragic past, a strong female lead, and quests then this is a must read for you.

After being given up at birth, all Alaine Turner wants to do is find her birth parents. She gets into a fight with her adopted mother and finds herself running away in the middle of the night to head towards Seattle, the only connection she has to her biological parents because that's where she was left as an infant. Alaine gets into a car accident where she thinks she's hit a person because a man lies unconscious in the middle of the road. When she tries to wake him, a light orb leaves his body and enters her, and then she is transported to a magical medieval world.

Confused, Alaine runs for her life when she is caught. The magic she now possesses saves her from being hung in a world that despises the existence of Gifted people.

Mikael, the prince of Caledonia, has returned after being exiled to the north for many cycles after helping a Gifted when he was younger. Fearing being a dissapointment to his father again, he vows to rid the kingdom of all Gifted. That is, until he meets Alaine.

Mikael's journey takes him through finding his true, caring self again while Alaine uncovers the secrets of her past and what her parentage means to this new world she has found herself in.

My thoughts:
What a fantastic book! It was such a cute read and I totally adored it. It made me laugh - multiple times - especially when Alaine found herself using jargon from her modern world that didn't exist in this new (or ancient) one. Mikael and Alaine go through extremely difficult times, from being captured for days with multiple failed escape attempts, to being recaptured, tortured and stripped of all hope. But they find their way out at the end. I loved the underlining meaning of this book and I really had fun reading it 🖤🖤

This was a cute, fairly quick fantasy read. The world building was fantastic, I felt like I could really picture being there. I'm a suckered for romance, so I was wishing for just a bit more of that, but maybe we'll see that in later books. 👀 If you're a fan of "finding yourself" journeys and high fantasy books, then you'll love this!

This was my most recent read, and I am extremely surprised with how creative the world building was, how deep the story was, and how amazingly unique all the characters were!
This was an absolute page turner, it was fast paced with multiple povs and extremely interesting side stories!

I loved Alaine, her sassy behavior, the way she reacted to her power and her emotional state towards coming home was everything to me!

My favorite characters were definitely Mikael and Mia, and the relationship between them was absolutely thrilling! He might have had a wicked character, but he had such a big heart, it was easy to root for him, and feel his pain. As for Mia, she was phenomenal, I loved her very much!

I shipped Mikael and Alaine so hard, I understand that nothing happened, considering the torture, imprisonment and stuff.. But I have big expectations!

It's amazing how the writer put together the wonderful magical elements, the outlawed magic vibe, the moral dilemmas, and even the humor!
I'm definitely a fan and I totally recommend!

This is a YA fantasy book with a dual point of view. The book is told from Alaine and Prince Mikael's POVs. Alaine is a 16 year old girl who lives on earth with her adoptive parents. As far as she knows, she's just a normal 16 year old who has a strange golden aura that shows in her hands when she's upset. She's hidden this from everyone she knows. Prince Mikael is just returned to the kingdom on another world following a 5 year exile for not falling in line with his father's policy on the gifted. He's determined to gain his father's approval. Alaine somehow ends up on the other world and appears to be a gifted.

The plot is fast paced and keeps moving forward throughout. You feel for both characters and race to the end. The author does a great job of world building while continuing the pace of the book.

I'm looking forward to reading the next book when it comes out and seeing not only what happens to our main characters but also the side characters as well.

Title: The Stolen Heir and The Exiled Prince
Author: Hope McPherson
Series: The Coran Chronicles Book #1
Rating:

I think all book lovers have wanted or dreamt of being able to leave their realities behind and adventure into the world of their favorite book. Personally, I wouldn't hesitate one second to be able to experience my favorite characters in their world if given the opportunity.

This book is full of the unknown and adventure. Alaine wants to find her family but instead a complete stranger changes all of that. Alaine is definitely a strong MC and you can see that as she handles this fantasy world with quite a bit of finesse.
This is book is everything you would want a fantasy to be: fast paced, great characters with really good development throughout the book, and plenty of drama and moral dilemmas. I thoroughly enjoyed The Stolen Heir and The Exiled Prince and I highly recommend this book to my fellow readers!!!

The Stolen Heir And The Exiled Prince by @author_hopemcpherson gave me Rapunzel vibes. The book switches between Alaine and Prince Mikael, which allows us to explore the world from an outsider and insider's perspective. However, the each of the perspective's were told in a different point of view. The switching back and forth between first and third person took me out of the story a little bit. With that being said I do think each of the character were well developed.

I loved learning about the world and the magical system. I am a big sucker for world building and magical systems. It felt balanced. I did not feel there were any moments of information overload. I also enjoyed the plot.

I cannot wait to check out the next book!!

A YA, portal fantasy story that I absolutely enjoyed. I read with the time, less and less YA, the settings no longer catche me. But this series opener, has me really well entertained.
The story moved along at a good pace, and was peppered with a good portion of suspense, magic, action and romance. The protagonists were authentic and sympathetic, often funny. At some points, the plot was quite predictable, but I did not lose interest, on the contrary, it was fun to follow the developments.
The description of the worlds was vivid and very colorful, it was nice to dive into these worlds.
All in all, this YA fantasy story is absolutely recommended for fantasy/romantasy fans, of all ages. I am very much looking forward to the next part.

One of the most enjoyable books I've read in a while. Can you imagine being thrown into a world you thought only existed in stories?! In this book, fantasy becomes reality for Alaine, but she handled it so so well, definitely better than I would've in the same situation. Both her story and Mikael's well worth the read. I'm glad that we found see both of their povs and watch as they learn and grow. Looking forward to continuing their journeys. There's gotta be another book coming, right?!

*AN AMAZING DEBUT*

I love the magical elements in this book that were thoughtfully created and the characters each had a past, present and future.
Beautifully set up for a series.
Definitely hooked half way through and the life flip of Alaine was amazing in its crafting.
I can't wait for the story to continue and I hope we have some YA romance. The main characters have epic chemistry and always seem to be saving one another.

I just couldn't get into the book, and didn't care for the characters. I only made it half way through the book before quitting, but Booksprout won't let me withdraw without punishment so I'm forced to leave a review anyway.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

A hidden gem. I absolutely adored this book! The characters, the story, the world, everything is so fun. It brought me back to what I loved about fantasy when I was younger. It has Portal magic, a lost Princess, banned magic, found family, and a journey to find what your heart longs for.

Our main girl, Alaine has always had a yearning to find out where she came from. Yes she absolutely loves her adopted parents and siblings, but she feels something is missing. Suddenly she finds herself face to face with magic lighting, and then she is thrown into a world that is not her own.

The story was so much fun, and characters are very likeable. I enjoyed the personal journey that each character went on throughout the story. In this book, we have zero romance but the potential for something to blossom in future books. It was a book that completely surprised me and was fantastic! I devoured the story. I want the second book, and this is one I want on physical form for my shelves. It has all of the magic and fun that made me fall in love with reading fantasy books.

The Stolen Heir and The Exiled Prince, Book One in the Coran Chronicles, is a fun YA Fantasy with a sassy female protagonist and wonderful magical elements. I enjoyed the different magical powers and the world building in this book. I appreciated the brokenness portrayed in the male MC and Alaina’s sense of humor. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. Fans of The Red Queen will enjoy this book.
