For the first time in years, the entire Holdfast family is gathered in the same place. For Daphne, however, this is more than just the family reunion she has been longing for. At stake is the future of the entire Empire, and the choices made by the Holdfasts will determine if the Star Continent will live in peace, or descend into civil war.
Karalyn has something other than the imperial succession on her mind. Her discovery that Belinda might still be alive on Implacatus has concentrated her thoughts on one objective – freeing the unwilling bride from the clutches of Edmond. To have any chance of success, she will need the help of others. From four different worlds, a group of unlikely heroes emerge; but will they be enough to save the Third Ascendant?

About Me
I love deserts, which is too bad as I live in Scotland, but the mountains, glens and lochs more than make up for it. My other love is Greek Tragedy, especially Euripides, and I also read history, science, fantasy, and pretty much anything about the Beatles…

God Restrainer is a bit different from the other books in this setting. It starts off suprisingly slow but once it gets going, it is one of the most exciting stories in this series. Just to give you an idea of how this change of pace is, it took me about three sessions to read the slow bits (about the first one fifth of this book), but I finished the rest of the book in one session of three hours, extending till midnight. I am sleep-deprived now, but it was worth it.
This story is also quite epic in scope with visits to most of the worlds and character interactions that we have seen earlier in the series. I love all the callbacks as well as the eventual coming together of all the sub-plots that we have seen earlier.
The plot is shaping up to end on an humdinger of a climax in the next book(s?).
Fans of this series should not miss this book. If you havent read this series before, start from book#1 and you will in for a rollercoaster ride.
I've been meaning to do this review for ages, but illness, MSc Dissertation, and a toddlerist kept getting in the way.
This is another epic book from Christopher Mitchell. I'm not sure why I love this world, so much, but it just captivates me. Once I start reading, I can't put it down, which is problematic when I'm trying to do research for my MSc and I have deadlines to meet. 😂
This one sees the entire Holdfast clan together in one book at some point or another. It's great to see the development of all the different characters and how each of their arcs intertwine. There's some serious growth from some characters that is great to see. And the characters you love to hate...Well... You continue to hate them.
I don't want to give too much away, but it is an excellent read, and while I know the entire series is long, it is well worth the investment of time. I can't wait for the next one to come out.
As the song says "I just can't get enough", this book delivers, The Holdfasts are together and there's trouble a brewing, it just keeps getting better and better. I cannot praise this book highly enough, just buy it. And Sable, now she's some woman to be one woman, I would not like to get on the wrong side of her. Every book just builds on the previous one, we are heading to some climax in this series. Just a pity Christopher can't write faster! To existing fans, you will love it, to people looking for a new book to read, go and buy the first one in the series and prepare to be captivated.
God Restrainer: An Epic Fantasy Adventure (The Magelands Eternal Siege Book 14), my eighteenth read from prolific author Christopher Mitchell, 521-pages of epic fantasy. Just when you wonder where this epic goes next Mitchell delivers. When I want to read epic fantasy I first look for author Christopher Mitchell. I look forward to reading more from this author. “I received a free Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
I can't get enough of these mortals and immortals! I love the storyline and don't even get me started on the characters. I've read a lot of fantasy series but this has become my favorite so far. The way Mr. Mitchell wraps up each book is fascinating to behold. Somehow, the characters meet up when all seems lost and the rapport among the family members and friends is the most realistic of most fiction I've read, though maybe a little more witty. Looking forward to the next installment with waited breath.
I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. God Restrainer is everything I wanted it to be and more. My favorite characters back again and all together spanning multiple worlds. Unexpected heroism, lots of teamwork, some very satisfying side quests. All of it progressing the story and characters I am very invested in and somehow by his genius writing making me love/hate them even more. This entire series is highly recommended!
A joy to read.. the characters are all coming together and it's all starting to mould and one can see the finale approaching. I am loving this series more and more as we get to the end. So much has been accomplished in this book and i can't wait until the next one. The family is closer and a sense of respect amongst them is now more obvious.. I can't wait to see how Belinda fits in and where she ends up.
I have enjoyed the adventures and travails of the Holdfasts for several months. Mitchell's writing and insertion of flaws into the characters of each of his 'heroes' is a great reminder that even the greatest of us is still flawed. I enjoy the redemption, the falls, and the ascensions of all the main characters. This book left me in anticipation of the next.
Absolutely superb as always from Chris, this time the Holdfasts are set on rescuing Belinda from Implaccatus, attempting to make Thorn the successor to Empress Bridget, all whilst bouncing between several worlds. The Holdfast ladies kick serious ass in this book, a riveting read from start to finish.

As usual, God Restrainer is another stunning book release in the Magelands epic story! We go back to the Star Continent with the characters that began the Magelands stories and started our love for the connected worlds. It is now possible to sense that we are being led to the final, massive crescendo, only a couple of books to go. What are we to do after that?
Without giving anything away this installment of the series sees some new plot lines, other lines tied off, and a whole load of new misadventures for our heroes to jump feet first into. If you've enjoyed the story so far, you'll love this. If this series is new to you, look up the reading order and get started. There's magic, swords, and dragons plus all sorts of Gods - what else do you need?
The Holdfast family is all together and then they disperse in all directions. Kelsey, Karolin, Sable, Daphne. Daphne battles with the Empress over the succession to the throne. Kelsey, Karolin as Sable mount an attack to rescue Belinda from the second ascendant on the gods own world. Great story from start to finish.
Sable, Karalyn, Kelsey, Daphne, Thorn. Holdfast's unite to do what no mortal has attempted. Attack .
Mage and God powers along with the might of dragons continues in this new release. Family might mean little to some, but to Sable she finds it is everything. Great read and can't wait for this series to continue.
Loved this book. Character development continues but it's starting to come together from the previous books now... All these characters from different worlds. So cool! This book is packed with action and is really fun. But who are we kidding, if you read the 1st 13, you're all in for 14!
Book14 had almost the perfect balance between narrative/story and action, much better than book13 , in my opinion. There were other books that had too much blood, guts and gore but the story line was really good. All in all I have enjoyed this whole series of books. Love the personalities of most of the dragons and their stories!
I've read all if the magelands books in sequence. I love the progression. Chris Mitchell is a consummate story teller. The characters constantly evolve and inevitably surprise. It's with mixed feelings that I await the final chapter. Or is it?
Awesome. Simply amazing and enthralling from start to finish. The entire Magelands series are so addictive . I challenge anyone to read them and potentially immersed invested in all.of the characters.....
What an outstanding series of books. This one kept me captivated from the beginning. I have read everyone in the series and have already pre ordered the next. Brilliant Author. Thank you.
I think this book was one of my favorite in the series. I’m so happy that Sable finally join the family and is getting along with Belinda as well. Now I have to wait for the next book and it’s going to be a torture.
This book was a great read. But the last three chapters were insane. If you haven't enjoyed the Mage land series of books you should. And this one just keeps the pace going. Where is Corthie.
The Gods have a new name for fear, Holdfast. The Holdfasts unite to take on the Ascendants, while at home Daphne and the Empress are embroiled in a fight for the future of Star Continent.
