Whitby: From the Celts to the Steampunks

This is an easy to read history of the famous old seaport of Whitby, from the ancient Celts, right up to the present day Steampunks and Goths, who I must say have revived the town's spirit and made it an even more interesting and exciting place to explore.

Whitby has many connections not just with England, but with the far corners of the world, this due to its ability to produce first class explorers like Captain Cook and the Scoresby captains, father and son.

There's everything from marauding Dutch privateers running amok in the harbour, to the tragic shipwrecks that have occurred over the years on its sometimes treacherous and rugged North Sea coast, as well as more genteel moments with the several famous writers who lived in or visited the town over the years.

Something for everyone then, in a hopefully palatable way that will keep you wanting to read more.

I lived and worked in the town as a Harbour Officer back in the 1980's. My insight into its past and ways is therefore probably more personal and subjective, than that of a writer who has approached it from a purely research perspective, as you will discover and hopefully enjoy.

Professionally and in my working years, I was in air and sea transport, physical risk and hospital fire safety.

Now I am a free spirit (i.e. of pensionable age), I can at last devote myself to what I always wanted to do, writing books on mythology, both factual and fictional. I'm really going miss doing the complicated and wordy fire risk assessments I used to have to do...not!

Here then, are my offerings over the years that started in 1987 with, 'The Whitby Ghost Book' and have been kept gong with my latest and first fictional offering, in this case a mystery and supernatural novella, 'The Duel at Danes Graves'.

It was great fun to write and allowed me to include the research I have done for my public talks on Viking mythology in Whitby..

I hope you will enjoy my books, whichever one you read...preferably all of them.
