Worrying about a one-way ticket to the closest psych ward wasn’t supposed to be a concern when Valerie Kearie changed jobs.
She traveled across the ocean, almost died on a routine assignment, and kicked ass…with the help of a Valkyrie spirit sent by Odin.
How could her life get any crazier?
Not a question she has time to ask when her company and her partner never slow down.
Viking Inc. and the Jarls need Valerie and Jacob to stay on the job. Valerie must juggle work and continuing to figure out her working relationship with the entity known as Reginlief.
The spirit won’t take her body over against her will, will it?
The Terrorists don’t know or care about Valerie and Jacob. For the partners to win, they have to figure out the game first and then the rules.
Which works for Valerie…until it’s time to toss out the rulebook and take matters into her own hands.
Can Valerie handle the changes going on inside her as her life spirals out of control? Can she help those who need a protector without divulging her secrets?
When the Chooser of the Slain is on the battlefield, everyone needs to keep their heads down.
Into The Battlefield is the second book in the Chooser of the Slain series by Michael Anderle.
I find myself irrevocably satisfied that Anderle didn't drag out the mystery of otherness surrounding Val Kearie's transitional state of being. One: It would not make sense for such vigilant and talented and trained operatives or analysts to miss the irregularities in congruence. Two: I'm feeling far too impatient for a slow reveal when it comes to witnessing the evolution of her partnership with Valkyrie taking up space in her head.
I do, however, find myself wondering how these cases she has been assigned correlate to each other, if at all? Outside of the injustice correction ideology, she practically embodies..
I'm also enjoying the humorous comments and opinions, or even terms her inner Valkyrie uses throughout their cooperation together. Especially when it comes to her opinions regarding Jacob and his potential to be a lasting battle buddy. *wink wink, nudge nudge* I have supported this love interest from the moment he was introduced at the beginning of this series. He is too adorable when his ears turn pink.
I find myself exploring what other connections Val has to the Allfather.... Such as her grandmother, who, if anyone in her family, resembles a modern-day Viking in action and behavior...
I am excited to see what boot camp has in store for our unique and winged operative.
This was a rather mediocre book actually. When I read the first book I liked the basic idea, Valerie being a Valkyrie, although she was unaware at the time, and the use of Norse mythology. The book was not great but good enough for me to give the second one a chance.
Unfortunately this second book in the series was, as I wrote, rather mediocre. The story is not really the greatest and jumps around in ways that are not always very logical.
Worse, the store is rather woke. Making neo-Nazis the bad guys is boring and overused as far as I am concerned. Add to that the rather idealized and not very truthful view the author presents concerning certain other groups of people in the book and I further lost interest in the book. And I am writing this as someone who comes into contact with said group of people and their behaviors on a yearly basis.
Valerie finally gaining her Valkyrie powers and the ensuing bad day(s) for the bad guys was pretty cool but apart from that this book mostly felt like a good idea being spoiled.
Val and the company she works for are going after some prejudice jerks who have deep pockets. They have to figure out who they are after and bring them down. At the same time Val, who thought she was going crazy, is starting to get to know her darker half and learning to enjoy the fight. I really like the storylines and the characters in this series and am looking forward to the next book.
After reading book 1, I was not expecting to like book 2 better. However, Val just keeps getting more interesting as a character! Thank you, Michael, for creating such grand people! It is a very exciting world to visit, especially for a 70 something old lady! If I enjoy it this much, I would hope younger crowds would enjoy it, too!! Keep up the good work! On to book 3!
Despite the combat violence the book is an enjoyable read as the heroine finds her place in the black ops company. I think the racial bigotry depicted is a good reminder in a gentle fashion of the need to be aware of unsociable activities. Looking forward to the next installment as I enjoy Norse mythology.
Val is still on probation but she is constantly going from job to job with Jacob. She is learning to deal with the entity in her head. I found it fascinating as she goes from deciding she is crazy to learning to fly and fight. I can't wait to jump into the next story.
Michael Anderle delivers every time! Great story line told in a slightly different slant. [Spoiler] I want her to tell the team about her new abilities.... 1) I think they'd help her refine them & 2) I think they'd appreciate what she can bring to the team. I'm off to read the next book now!
Enjoyed this book. I have read a lot of M. Anderle's books and enjoy them a lot. Always a reference here and there I seem to catch and laugh at. Makes me wonder if I am missing more. I will continue to read along and see what happens next. I think I would be like myself. Flying under the radar but helping to keep things together.
Congratulations to Michael Anderle for another amazing series. It’s extremely hard to find such an interesting and exciting author who not only writes intelligently but also provides top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories. I’m really looking forward to the next book!
The blend of Norse mythology and private para military contractors would seem to be a bit of an oxymoron at best. But it works. It did leave unanswered the explanation of the damage to the jacket
The main character is a blast to follow through these stories. There is a lot of action, fun character interaction and detailed descriptions. So far I am really enjoying this series and look forward to future books. I recommend this book and series.
Feels like caffeine overload, my head is buzzing. Love, love, love these books. Wish I had not started until all were available, waiting is tough, counting down the days
A great follow up to the first book! I'm enjoying watching Val getting her "wings" under control..sort-of ! liking how your giving a little insight into what make's all the characters tic! Hurry up Oct. So I can get started on book 3!!
This is the kind of series I have been craving since the Kurthurian universe completed. This will be one I will read again, and again, and..... Thanks, Mike!
Being able to fly and rip apart bad guys? Sign me up! Val and Reginleif are awesome together. This book builds on the first. There is death and violence. It does not have a cliff hanger.
Mysteries popping up on two continents. Life and death battles. Who is behind it and how can a modern Valkyre help and protect. A great series I am anxious to pursue.
Valerie Leary is beginning to accept her alter ego. The case develops in a logical progression to a gruesome battle denouement and then yet another confrontation. Go Valkyrie!
Love it! Mysteries solved and lots of action, too. Want to see these folks get to the point Val shares her secret. Would LOVE to see Jacob become her shieldmate. So I will keep reading with my fingers all crossed.
