Tom Fulwood, the future Earl of Standish discovers at the age of fifteen that marriage can destroy a man, namely his father. His mother prefers entertaining men in her bedroom, while her husband sits downstairs, unable or unwilling to respond to his wife’s inappropriate behaviour. From that day on Tom vows that no woman will hurt him the way his mother hurt his father. For the next seventeen years Tom works hard to become one of the most notorious rakes London society has ever seen, successfully keeping all the women of his acquaintance at a distance.
In 1810 twenty-four year old, Isabelle Crawford had been brought up hearing stories of how much in love her dead parents were and had expected to find similar happiness when she came out in society. Reality was different to what she had imagined though, instead of love, she found fortune hunters and as a result left London to set up home in Bath. Her two elder brothers had supported her decision, although they would have rather seen their sister married instead of choosing what was seen by the ton as an eccentric decision, a young woman living a single life in Bath with a cousin as chaperone.
A potential marriage between Tom and Isabelle’s brother and sister, throws the couple together and sets in motion a chain of events that will see Tom fighting for his life and Isabelle being kidnapped by the very man that Tom had found in his mother’s bedchamber all those years ago
Audrey Harrison was born about two hundred years too late. She wants to belong to a time when men were men and women were dressed in gowns and could float, simper and sigh.
In the real world she has always longed to write, writing a full manuscript when she was fourteen years old. Work, marriage and children got in the way as they do and it was only when an event at work landed her in hospital that she decided to take stock. One Voluntary Redundancy later, she found that the words and characters came to the forefront and the writing began in earnest.
Her ideal would be to write Regency Romances, but more modern characters are insisting on being heard, hence the release of’ ‘A Very Modern Lord’, a contemporary romance.
So, although at home more these days, the housework is still neglected and tea is still late on the table, but she has an understanding family, who usually shake their heads at her and sigh. That is a sign of understanding, isn’t it?
First, thanks for the note that the book has been proofread. Well, I must say the one that I read? It was still full of mistakes :D But anyways, for me, this book did NOT make sense at all.
We've got a heroine who lives with her cousin as an independent woman in Bath. Her brother James wants to marry but his reputation isn't the best so the wife-to-be's brother, the Earl, wants to meet James and his family. Basically in order to prove his true character before giving consent.
The plot was interesting and quite elaborate. There's quite a lot happening and I enjoyed it.
Didn't like the characters, though... Mostly cause, well, hell, the Earl is complicated. Like, seriously, this guy is insane. I can understand the reason why he doesn't want to marry. Still, he hurts the heroine continually. Plus, I hate that he can't accept when he's done something wrong. Also, he never makes it right again. It takes him way too long.
Our heroine? She's so ridiculous. I mean, for quite some time she's this woman who is intent on never marrying a guy she doesn't love. Yeah, well, I can tell you, that attitude doesn't uphold that long... Disappointing... Then, she is sooo accepting of foolish and naive Sophie (the Earl's sister). I mean, WTH?? The girl totally ridiculed her brother and she just forgives her??!! I hate that she even wants to help her. I also don't like that after his outburst, she forgives him again just like nothing happened. I mean, girl, what is wrong with you? And then she's even angry at herself and not furious about his outrageous statement??!! Why???
So, yeah, after 75% I had to stop because the whole thing was simply utterly disappointing... Weak...
What was wrong with it? The heroine was not consistent in her actions. The hero was no hero but a jerk who never fights for the heroine.
So far this is my favourite book by this author. It is 4-1/2 stars at least. The storyline weaves through without being too predictable. Even if you're able to figure out how it will all end there's enough action in the meantime to keep things interesting. There's never a dull moment. The Earl of Standish, Tom Fulwood, and Miss Isabelle Crawford exchange some humorous banter especially as Isabelle does not cower to Tom's high-handed ways. She quite unhinges him and their relationship develops into a nice friendship at first. Isabelle's eldest brother, James, is courting Tom's younger sister, Lady Sophie, which is what brings Tom & Isabelle together. Isabelle's companion is her cousin, Miss Mary Leicester, who is closer in age to James. There is witty dialogue, misunderstandings, an attempted elopement to Gretna Green, a kidnapping, a shooting, and finally, a declaration of love that is long overdue. There is also an Epilogue which adds very nicely to the post-wedding life of the happy couple and their children. This one is a winner.
I'm so glad that Kindle Unlimited allowed me to meet this great storyteller, The hero is a bit of a blockhead but the heroine makes up for him. She is almost too modern in her attitudes but I throughly enjoyed this book.
This is a very full and fast paced story involving complex characters, realistic romance and surprises around every corner, it also comes with a decent epilogue which is excellent
A delightful romp about several people whom have chosen different ways in life because often of just a couple of significant episodes happening to them. We have people who have publicly put out they plan on never marrying including some very desirable wealthy young women who have decided to themselves from London's Season & set up a Spinster's household along with a companion (not a same sex love situation) people running off to Gretna Green to Marry & more.
Yes, this fast paced well written storyline is definitely a 5 STARS read. I loved the characters that were described so accurately that even as a reader I would cringe as I heard a name or 2, but for highly different reasons.
I truly enjoyed the banter between the characters in this read. It is also understandable not all family members are likeable. Situate yourself, prop your feet up with some refreshments at hand because this is one page turning read that can't be out thought.
A stubborn determined to be spinster and a jaded lord meet and find over time an undeniable attraction. Of course there are a few hurdles to be jumped before their happy ending
Audrey Harrison is a brilliant story teller. The words make the reader fully engage with the characters in the story. Love this story and highly recommend it.
Managed to read this book in only a few hours.I found it enjoyable and pleasant to read. The characters developed slowly and the story line flowed well☺
The Earl certainly created complications even though they might shave initially been caused by his mother in his youth and this made it a very interesting read/listen. Such strange ideals to live ones life by. Poor man! But he was lucky enough to have had someone pushing him in the right direction and eventually came to his senses. Just goes to show that one has to take responsibility for every action in life. I enjoyed the sound of the narrators different voices but Ms. Nagle would do better to either pre read or practice her reading before recording. Other than her brief hesitations and strange inflections on the odd occasion, her reading was most entertaining. The story is of a high caliber and this is what I have come to expect from this author, Audrey Harrison. Most enjoyable and I recommend this book.
Loved this book. The changing set of charters in love adds to the story so well.
Watching Tom and Isabelle go from love to cant stand each other to love again is a roller coaster to the emotions. The heart break for both sets of loves make you want to hug all of them. The turmoil surrounding Toms sister running away and the heart break for James and later marriage to Mary made it all real in a way of it can and does happen in real life. Tom having to admit how he felt about Isabelle just in time to save her life.
The plot and characters were all enjoyable, but there was something wrong with the writing style. Too distant and for the first third I considered giving up it annoyed me so much. I can't understand it, I thoroughly enjoyed the Captain's Wallflower by the same author and didn't have this problem at all.
Tried and tried to get into this one but it just wasn't doing anything for me. Got it as my Prime book for January so since it cost me nothing, DNF'd it.
