Infinity

Humanity was forced to abandon the Earth long ago. At least, that’s what we were told.

When Chase Michaels is awarded one of the most coveted positions on space station Infinity, he learns it also comes with its most deadly secret—the Earth their ancestors left behind isn’t vacant. More than that, there are other stations and ships orbiting the planet, all being hidden from the station’s residents.

His job as technician is to round up those who discover the secret and usher them to their deaths before fixing the bugs that expose the truth.

The penalty for speaking out is death. Despite this risk, his colleagues believe they’ve found a way to set the record straight. But they need Chase’s help to execute their master plan.

If they succeed it means humanity might be able to return home, if they fail, it could doom them all. Will Chase risk his own well-being for the future of the station?

Infinity is a prequel short story to the Fractured Orbit series. A science fiction dystopian adventure that is perfect for fans of Red Rising and The Expanse. It is only available to subscribers of Herman's newsletter - head to his website to download it for free.

Infinity is free on Herman Steuernagel's website and book #0.5 in the “Fractured Orbit” series.

I decided to read it in preparation for book #1 Eclipse, coming out on February 7th, and what can I say?

25 pages to get to know the world Eclipse is set in.

Earth is abandoned because it needs to heal, centuries of humanity on the planet have made it uninhabitable and those who are alive have fled to a space station orbiting the brown broken planet living in space for decades. But is it just one station, and is Earth really still uninhabitable? You should find out.

I think this short story sets the tone great for this world, it is unfriendly and cruel.

Are the higher powers playing a game and the ordinary little people are their pawns? We will soon find out what is really going on.

If you wanted to go into Eclipses blind, you might, but these 25 pages give you a good understanding of what is to come, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

This novella is a tight and intense story of a pivotal moment that sets up much of the background for book one, Eclipse. Infinity can be read either first or after Eclipse, although for me it had a bigger impact knowing what happens in Eclipse but is totally enjoyable either way.
