Laura was born with the ability to jump between worlds, using the power of her mind. Finally free of the institutions that stole her youth, Laura is desperate for a normal life. Unfortunately, that's harder than she expected. She can't keep a job, she's failing her college classes, and strange dreams continue to rob her of sleep. Just when the dreams turn a little too real, she's approached by a company that claims she's the only thing standing between Earth and the biggest threat in the multiverse. The catch? That threat might be hiding inside her mind. Without much choice, Laura joins a team of unlikely heroes and soon finds that no one can be trusted. Especially not her invisible friends.
Because I'm pretty sure I just read my favorite book of the year and it was my first read of the year.
The thing about the Alter series is that you aren't just reading about a girl with an interesting power. You are reading so many different stories, each with their own skilled world building, thoughtfully developed characters, and unique plot, hidden within one book. How f*cking difficult must it have been to make the reader invested in every single one of the alters' journeys? And H.R. Truelove well pulled it off in book one and truly went beyond in book two. I could read an entire novel about Alona, Giselle, or any of the other girls we've met—and I basically demand an entire series devoted to Dora. She is FABULOUS.
I've read two books in this series now, and both have had the same impact: your appreciation for them grows the longer you sit and stew about them after. The blend of fantasy and science fiction in this book was so unique and interesting. I adored Dora's world. How something so unassuming was hiding science-based magic and a beautiful growth plot. And then we got a crazy cool steampunk city to explore, experienced what it was like to be a fish person, and all that without even mentioning the robots. I LOVED Elizabeth. And the twist with her and F? That was such an awesome moment. And I love that you get to experience this sweet romance over and over again.
I loved all the twists. Loved the political/royalty stuff and seeing it all from another perspective. Loved the gender-bent world. Love that Laura and Wade are a REAL couple. Loved the fact that character morality varied from world to world—I thought that added such realism. Just so many things. I could go on and on with quotes and individual elements I enjoyed, but there's just too much.
The plot is amazing. The characters are such a pleasure. And then there's the writing. When I read the first book, I assumed it had taken years and years to perfect. And then we get to book two, and I'm like—oh, okay, so this is just how you write, huh? You just have some of the most effortless writing I've ever read, okay. The figurative language is truly special. And excellent writing mixed with great voice (read: voiceS)? There's humor, there's heart. It's got every element you could want, and it does it five times over.
This was another amazing book with another teeth-gnawing ending. I can't wait for book three.
I cannot stop thinking about how amazing this book series is. We head back into the multiverse with Laura, her new friends and new enemies. I wasn't sure who the good guys were or who the bad guys were. I loved the idea that within this very complex world you didn't know who to trust or who to confide in because your life depended on it. It's hard to tell you what exactly this story contains without spoiling it but what I will say is that is is amazingly written, very original and a completely addicting science fiction story. Do yourself a favor and start with book 1 and dive in head first. You will love this story and series!!! I give this 5 time travel worthy stars!!
To say that H.R. Truelove knows how to build a world would be a huge understatement! In this sequel she created so many incredible worlds just like in the first book. I especially love the Narrow World where it's like you travel forward in time as you climb up. Once again Laura has been thrust into the multiverse with a great cast of characters. From the lovable Alona to the detestable princess, she has a whole new group of alters to try to save the multiverse with. I tore through this book and stayed up too late reading to finish it. It's an incredible mix of action and complex relationships with the overarching question of who can you really trust? I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I believe this is a series that everyone who loves apocalyptic fiction should read. Now I'm going to read the first one again and then reread this one. :)
Alter: A Glitch in The Multiverse carries on from Alter. (I'll keep it vague due to spoilers from the first book and of course from this book). Laura finally free from TIR and no longer interlinked with Lennox, Wisdom and the others, is now living life like a "normal" person, until she gets a job at NWG. I loved this book as much as the first one and I still got blown away even though I now understand what is going on. The twists and turns are still as fierce as book 1 and I found myself just as awestruck. The characters are just fantastic and each world is built with as much richness and depth as the ones before it. The direction this novel took the characters was pure brilliance, the characters you didn't expect much from provided as much shock as the characters you expected to shock you. Im in such awe of the creativity the author H.R. Truelove has, to create multiple worlds, characters and a more than complex storyline just screams pure talent. I honestly loved Alter: A Glitch In The Multiverse, the whole story and concept fascinated me and that ending!!! Oh My God!!! Not to spoil anything but I'm ready for book 3!
Wow, this was everything from the first book and more!!
We pick up with Laura about a year after the first book. She is trying to begin having a normal life with Wade but adjusting to normal doesn’t come easy. With a new job opportunity Laura finds herself thrust back into the world of new worlds and faces.
I loved the slew of new characters we met in this book along with a slightly more grown up Laura. The twists and turns in everyone’s storyline was beautifully told and so unexpected!
Once again HR Truelove has given us a book with seamless world building and interconnected stories that compliment each other without overshadowing anyone character. If you liked the first book, you will love this one.
I reviewed the first book in this series, Alter, and didn't think it could get any better because the ending seemed to have tied up almost everything. I was wrong! There was so much feels in the last half of the book, and yet again, it had me saying, "Oh shit!"
The main storyline follows Laura as she experiences life outside of TIR and the complications of keeping a job. Her new job, New World Gentics, has her jumping back into the multiverse and finding new versions of herself. I loved meeting the new characters and really attached myself to Alona and her family.
I'll be honest, the beginning of the book was a little hard to get into, but I don't think that was the book itself. I have had a book hangover for a bit and it feels like it's gone after reading this book. I'm so excited to read the third one and see how the full story adds up. I feel like one person isn't as gone as they seem. NO SPOILERS so you will have to read the book yourselves which I highly recommend if you're looking for a new Sci-Fi mulitverse series, this is it!
I was so excited to dive back into the mutliverse. Truelove has done an excellent job of building a rich world, unique and full of diverse and interesting characters. I loved exploring new parts of the multiverse with Laura. It was so hard to figure out who could really be trusted, and where the threats were really coming from - but that was part of what really drew me in. I had to know what happened next, and I was captivated by the characters and the challenges they faced. Highly recommend, and definitely read book one! I hope we get more books in this universe, because I just can't get enough.
H.R Truelove writes the perfect sci-fi novel. Her story telling is phenomenal. The way she brings all these characters together is astounding and leaves you wanting more.
I absolutely loved the first novel and the second novel is just as perfect. I love Laura and all the others and I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen, who is going to survive. The ending, oh boy that ending....roll on book 3
