Discover Spiritual the “inside-out” path to getting rid of inner clutter and living a more fulfilled life.
Everywhere you look, people in all walks of life are “going minimalist” and getting rid of their possessions. Yet as exciting as it can be to throw out half of your belongings, does it really bring happiness? As Light Watkins “If you’re unhappy now, becoming a minimalist isn’t likely to change that… unless you do the inner work to cultivate happiness on the inside.”
Light is famous for taking minimalism to the extreme―and now lives his whole life out of a single backpack. In Travel Light , he shares his surprising revelation that being a “spiritual minimalist” means you don’t focus on material objects. What matters more than clearing out your closets is how much trust you have in your inner guidance. “Spiritual Minimalism is not about how much physical stuff you have,” he says. “It’s about how you communicate, incorporate service into your life, exercise, cook, clean, and express your love.”
Light shares his unique inside-out approach to minimalism using stories, anecdotes, and vignettes, along with real-world experiments and exercises that you can adapt to your own life.
Here you’ll learn how
• Prioritize and cultivate inner happiness • Make the most important decisions from your heart • Get comfortable in the discomfort • Live as though there are no throwaway moments • Tap in to your curiosity as a gateway to your true path • The “freedom of choicelessness”―decluttering your life decisions
You’ll be invited to discover the joy of giving what you want to receive; following your curiosity; and living with a “clutter-free” approach to your choices, values, and life purpose. Implementing the principles of Spiritual Minimalism will get you aligned with your values and lead you to a life-changing adventure!
While there were a couple of gems in here, this was a book full of psycho-pop spirituality. If any teacher ever tells you they have seekers lined up outside their Venice Beach home in order to buy mantras or that they wear mala/prayer beads to “dress up their chinos”… please put your money back in your pocket and run for the hills. And if someone tells you they paid $14K for a mediation training… run faster.
I get it, the author is LA-hip, cool, beautiful, but he’s not serving up enlightenment here or in one of his high-dollar trainings or paid memberships.
I liked this one. I heard this author being interviewed on a podcast and he seemed very personable. But he also described his minimalist lifestyle and that left me feeling a little mortified.
I liked his approach to minimalism. He didn't have gavel in hand and he wasn't preachy. And this book isn't really about that...it was about so much more. Even though I'll never be on board the minimalist wagon, I still really appreciated his message.
I listened to the audio and was glad that he did his narration. He did a great job. I'd read this one again so 5 stars.
Excellent - simple ways of living and embodying minimalism that starts with daily mediation made easy and includes following your heart voice, curiosity, core values, exercise/movement and capsule wardrobes that all allow for ease of decision making and being more present. The illustrations in ever present indigo blue are wonderful. A small but mighty book that I enjoyed as part of a morning devotion.
The gentle reminder I needed “keep practicing even if it seems hopeless” is the key to consistency and “small hops” lead to big changes in your life.
I heard Light on one of my favorite podcasts “This Morning Walk” and immediately signed up for his newsletter, reserved his books and starting listening to his podcasts. I will return to his interview about this book on The Rich Roll podcast again.
One of those people who is wise beyond his years and exudes abundance and happiness internally and out based on his simple lifestyle choices. I am in awe.
Seven principles can serve as a gateway to a lifestyle aligned with one’s values and purpose. With an emphasis on prioritizing and cultivating inner happiness and making decisions from the heart’s voice, those who embrace uncomplicated meditation and minimalism will find new paths available that simply could not be seen before.
Shedding material possessions is just one suggestion. The larger concept is challenging habits and conventions that conflict with an intentional life. How simply can a person live and what is to be gained from it? Curiosity leads to opportunities and connections. Giving what someone wants to receive can manifest that very thing. Once values are clarified, showing up fully in life means eliminating those useless throwaway moments and creating internal space. These principles can require becoming comfortable with discomfort, yet ultimately simplify one’s choices opening up new vistas. Do less, accomplish more, reduce stress and enjoy the process.
Watkins offers fresh insights into meditation, minimalism and intentional living. The principles are not new, but collectively present thoughtful perspective for achieving inner peace and an increased level of personal freedom.
1.5 stars, rounded up for the reminder to listen and follow my heart
There were a few nuggets of information -- some of the challenges and "what's in my bag" segments -- but otherwise this book felt a bit scattered and like a mishmash of ideas that kind of hang together.
I hate to be harsh, but the stories are often rambling and redundant.
This book could have been a blog post with seven headlines and a few bullet points per headline. Save yourself time! Scan the table of contents and listen to an interview with the author.
“What matters more than clearing out your closets is how much trust you have in your inner guidance and that you treat life as if there are no throwaway moments, give what you want to receive, follow your curiosity, are able to find comfort in discomfort, and embrace the freedom of choicelessness whenever possible.”
Good antidote to the consumerist, material culture that surrounds us, but not to my taste…
At this point I’m just gonna give raving reviews for any book that I actually finish 🤩
Jokes aside, this book was enlightening (large scale) and practical (small scale). I like reading perspectives from people who live strongly out of a personal philosophy and this guy does just that
Overall, I like this book because it provides practical ways to improve overall life quality. However, I couldn't connect with the terminology of "Spiritual Minimalism." In fact, I didn't understand how it differs from being Spiritual and being a Minimalist at the same time. It feels like the author force-fit this terminology to introduce something new. Anyway, if you ignore this term, the overall book is not bad. It won't teach you a lot of new things that you don't already know.
I particularly like the idea of following curiosity. The author consistently gave several anecdotes on following curiosity, which led to amazing outcomes. It reminded me of the movie "Yes Man."
As a writer, I feel Light has a long way to go. The chapters felt repetitive, and it's hard to understand if this book is about meditation, curiosity, or traveling light. But this book is very simple to understand, you can read it fast. This part, I like.
It is a good read for someone who is starting to read self-improvement books, is interested in meditation, and has a lot of flexibility in life. At many places, this book assumes that people have no family dependency, and flirting is encouraged. Well, this may appeal to a certain group of people, but not to all.
Approximately 4 hours of my life wasted! The book has a misleading title when you start reading it. The author keeps promoting his classes, but barely talk about "travel light"!!!
Thank you, Partner Bibliolifestyle and Sounds True for my spot on tour and gifted copy!
When I first read the synopsis for Travel Light, I knew I absolutely had to read it. This year I've been determined to get rid of inner clutter. I've been learning how to find comfort in discomfort (which is actually Principle #6 in this book!). I loved so many quotes. Here are two of my favorites: "Don't worry about finding your purpose. Just follow your curiosity and your purpose will find you." "When you do everything in your power to make it work and it's still not working, the Universe is trying to save your ass."
I'm always going back and forth in my mind wondering if I've made the right decision and what if I don't, then what will happen. Sometimes I need to take a step back and see things for what they really are and stop trying to make them work because if I'm trying that hard to make them work, it was never really meant to be.
Travel Light is such an enlightening and inspiring book. I think everyone should read it! I'm excited to apply the principles I've learned to my life. Next, I want to start meditating every day.
i was pleasantly surprised by this read. ella recommended 'the minimalists' podcast, and i've been loving that listen. the podcast hosts mentioned this book on one of the episodes so i thought i would give it a shot.
the author is extremely quirky, sorta a weird dude, however i really resonated with his idea of your "inner voice". there are important times when something just feels right or makes sense or brings clarity, even when it's scary or doesn't make sense logistically. this "heart voice" has led my university decision, international travel, internship acceptance, full-time position, and eventually cross country move, all of which have resulted in incredible experiences and connections. his explanation of this experience was impeccable.
also, i appreciate his idea of not overcomplicating meditation. just sit there with your thoughts. don't try to guide or change your thoughts or start thinking or stop thinking. just let your thoughts wander where they want and enjoy the silence, this is how you strengthen your inner voice that will lead you to all the people and experiences at exactly the right place at exactly the right time. very introspective!
Travel Light explores ways in which to focus on what is most important in your life. Light Watkins offers several practices that are geared to help readers find their heart voice, their purpose, and self-confidence. Watkins also shares how he has become "nomadic."
If you are looking for a book to help you get rid of physical stuff and organize your home, read Marie Kondo's book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Travel Light is about inner work, the hardest to accomplish and the most rewarding when you see progress.
This is a short book and one which must be re-read in order to delve more deeply into the practices, which I plan to do.
Travel light.
I heard Light Watkins interviewed on The Good Life Project podcast and was intrigued to learn more about his concept of spiritual minimalism.
Watkins provides stories and practical rituals. An enjoyable read and a book that will remain close to my reach for moments when I need to remind myself to slow down and wait, versus try to control the outcomes.
Being versus doing.
For those seeking more quiet, and some solid daily practices to help you focus on being versus doing, this is worth the read.
Light. If you’re reading this. I look forward to tuning into your podcast.
a consciously approachable way to explore your inner world
I discovered Light via Commune. I started following his work after that. This book is a lovely read for anyone working on the inner excavation of what “enough”means for them. For me, it came exactly at the right time, as I have given away 80% of my physical possessions after doing the inner work he talks about. This book was literally the sign that I am on the right path. Now off to live in my RV can call anyplace home.
I purchased this book after listening to the author being interviewed on a podcast. I feel bad about giving this book a 2 star rating because the author seems like such a kind and gentle man who is very devoted to his craft. However, as a person who's been meditating and practicing mindfulness for several years now, and who wishes to delve deeper into these two practices, this book was just too simplistic for me. It may be a great book for those who are beginners though.
Interesting topic. Spiritual minimalism isn't about possessions, it's more about organizing your life from the inside out. Clarity of thought, action, and goals/desires are the topic of this book. I found it very useful and affirming of beliefs and philosophies that over time have proved beneficial in reducing the amount of internal churn of my emotions, providing more energy for positive things.
There are some great tips in here. Also a few that are a bit more ‘out there.’ A bit too much time spent on telling me why a resistance band should be part of my minimalist backpack. That being said, the book was helpful to remind me to prioritize daily meditation and daily walks. The book also was helpful to remember that every daily interaction isn’t happenstance. It is all part of a bigger picture.
A nice little book with helpful reminders. A useful read for the twentysomething crowd.
To improve his work for a broader audience, I think Mr. Watkins can assume readers are a bit more intelligent. For instance, he gives directions on how to hand wash clothes and suggests people use reusable water bottles. We don't need this advice.
His personal anecdotes were the best parts. I wish him every success.
Travel light is a wonderful book on how to do just that...Travel lightly...in all ways. I don't know that I will be living a nomadic life any time soon..at least not purposely..but isn't that part of the point. His book is short..and very gently to the point..but meaningful stories and experiences too. I'll keep this on my downloaded kindle shelf to reread for continuous inspiration..and I also have it on audio book! Highly recommend
There are lots of little gems in this easy-to-read book that can be applied to making one's life more simple as well as more fulfilling, and I will definitely be returning to it to work on those things.
The book might have been a wee bit too focused on what works, specifically, for Watkins who leads a nomadic life, and won't be applicable to those of us who have jobs or lifestyles that keep us tied to one place. But, I feel some things can easily be modified to fit one's particular circumstances so that wasn't a real problem for me--just noting it.
I listened to this as an audiobook. Watkins has an invigorating and commanding voice. I heard him talk about spiritual minimalism on a podcast and was intrigued. The life he is currently living IS inspiring. Overall, there are some great principles with actions geared to simplify one’s life to bring forward the heart's voice (intuition) and purpose.
I appreciate how this book reads like a field guide. While I read it chronologically, you’re free to skip around to what piques your interest and current needs. My favorite part is the idea of “choicelessness.” At first I was startled by what I assumed this meant, but the more I read the more I understood. Worth the read if you’re dipping your toes into spirituality.
The author’s messages at times feel more like an act of appropriation or partaking in a spiritual cosplay than instead feeling genuine. Very LA spiritual if you catch my drift. That being said, the book is very okay- but there are definitely better books on spirituality out there from more authentic individuals in my opinion.
I really enjoyed this book. The 7 principles presented in the book helped me to get more clear on my own practices and where I’ve not been true to my own inner voice. This book has given me a lot to think about and I’m grateful for that. Thank you! 🙏🏻
"When your heart always guides you in the direction of your purpose, the thing that helps you get started is not necessarily the thing that helps you sustain and grow your purpose... A leap of faith cannot be an isolated act, it must become a lifestyle."
Heard the Author on a podcast & obtained the book from local library BUT As another review has already said "this was a book full of psycho-pop spirituality"
While there are a couple of gems ( am being kind) there is nothing really new here .
If you’re looking for a lightweight book to inspire change then this is your book. I’m always amazed at how seemingly ordinary and accessible Light is while being truly extraordinary.
Solid book that helps heighten awareness in practical ways such as meditation and eliminating unnecessary items. The book does a great job of providing practical changes toward a better lifestyle to achieve betterment and ultimately full trust in your own heart.
