This is a graphic novel based on the video game(s) Clash of Clans/Clash Royale. I did not know that when I picked it up, just that it looked like something my kids and I might enjoy reading. I will say from the jump my 12-year-old felt it was just "ok" but my 9-year-old absolutely (and almost immediately) fell in love with the book and since the series! Gene Luen Yang (who I have enjoyed other projects with) does not disappoint and I find the story fun, goofy, laughable and easily accessible to kids. The art gallery and the tips and tricks to playing the game were a very nice addition in the back of the book. While the danger level is low (which I love for my kids) the humor really tickled my youngest daughter and made me even more interested in reading. The town of JazzyPickles is in danger, a group comes together for hijinks and friendship. Not a book I really feel the need to reread, but it still was fun and enjoyable.
OK this was more juvenile than I'd expected it to be, but still fun. Very videogame-like. Not interested enough to continue reading it, but it's cute for young readers who like goofy over-the-top fantasy action fun. I couldn't get over how much the main character ("Terrodicus" AKA "Terry") looked like Mr. T from the eighties, and that just sucked me right out of the story. "Hog riders" (riding actual boar hogs, not motorcycles, get it?) is a very weird profession for your main warrior group, very silly!
A promising start in a new series that will appeal to fans of Clash of Clans/Clash Royale, as well as those familiar with Gene Luen Yang. Yang’s storyline uses characters from the Clash universe (this volume showcases Terrodicius the Hog Rider, aka “Terry,” a misfit among his fellow Triumphica Hog Riders) to tell a story about identity and stereotypes without being didactic. It’s goofy fun and an easy win for reluctant readers, as my 13-year-old can attest.
This was really cute. I’m a fan of Gene Luen Yang’s work and attended an online event for this, then received a copy from the publisher. This is definitely a book I’d include in a classroom. I think it would be especially helpful for reluctant readers and I’m glad it’s being made into a series.
Eye read 2023 6.8/10 i liked the story more than the game. Full colour, cheesy jokes and a nice little story for when you want to entertain your inner child.
I am SO not the target audience for this book so I won't rate it but I will say it's a fun and colorful graphic novel that reads like a video game - a no-brainer for non-reading middle school boys.
I didn't think much of the game because I've only played a little bit when it first came out; this adds more to the game, and I like the character development
