Attuned: Practicing Interdependence to Heal Our Trauma―and Our World

Rate this book
A road map to harness the power of our collective human consciousness as a source for healing our traumatized world

We are all interconnected―and dependent on each other to shape the world in which we live. Yet even though technology has allowed us to digitally share our lives with more people than ever, the result has been a growing pattern of personal isolation, alienation, and division. Why is this? “We are seeing the manifestation of collective trauma,” says luminary Thomas Hübl, who has reached thousands of people around the world through his teachings on mysticism and healing. “The profoundly complex challenges we face demand a new level of human collaboration.”

In Attuned , Hübl, together with writer Julie Jordan Avritt, shares a visionary guide for individuals, therapists, and other professionals committed to healing our struggling world. Attuning to a person, group, or organization means coming into resonance by listening mindfully to the inner sensations, feelings, images, and information that arise. At the core of the book is the “relational field”―a vast matrix of energy through which information is shared within, around, and between us. In each chapter, you'll find insights and practices for perceiving and tuning in to oneself and others, and ultimately contributing to the healing of this field,

• The mystical and evolutionary principles behind human development and connection
• Resources for embodying resilience, processing toxic stress, and regulating our individual and collective nervous systems
• Attunement practices for working with the effects of trauma in yourself and across communities
• Transparent communication―a practice of relating through authentic awareness and vulnerability
• Guidance for group facilitators, healing ancestral trauma, and more

By embracing our interdependence, we can activate what is needed to respond to and evolve through the challenges of our age. “It may take only a small number of us,” explains Hübl, “to establish a new level of collective coherence―to share our light, heal our wounds, and realize the unawakened potential of our world.”

I find it very difficult to rate this book. Do I think it’s an important book? I do. Do I think it’s addressing a vital topic. I do. The whole world seems to be acting out of trauma at this moment in time. The human race seems pretty off the rails.

Do I feel like I got useful information about what to do? Um . . . . .

Firstly, I find Hübl pretty tough to follow a lot of the time. I tried taking one of his courses but I ended up dropping it because I just really never understood what he was talking about. It’s a bit easier with a book because I can go slow (I read this book SO SLOWLY!) and I can reread. That’s fine. But sometimes I still had no clue.

Secondly, there are “practices” in the book to help get in touch with what’s going on inside and to try to stay regulated so that you can process/integrate your stuff. But they are incredibly vague. And there are instructions for a group to do it when addressing collective trauma, but with very clear directions that groups should only process collective trauma with highly trained facilitators. Again, I completely agree with that, but it essentially means you can only do something like that with Hübl or one of his trained people. And again, it all seemed so vague.

I think that’s the over all impression I have of this book. It feels important and it’s incredibly vague. And the way he describes the problem of trauma and collective trauma, I am not walking away with any hope of that this can actually be shifted. Mostly I’m walking away with the feeling that the world is pretty f*$ked.

4.5 stars. (See pp 63, 72, 115-6, 131, 136-7, 141, 183 (disagree), 185-7, 189, 197, 211).

I very much appreciate any serious attempt to connect narratives of individual healing and liberatory social transformation -- this is one of those.

Actually, I found the first half of the book -- specifically where the author articulates with more specificity than I've seen before both how to develop presence and how to use self-awareness/presence as a tool for healing another or each other including in community facilitated settings -- more compelling. I will return to this.

I also appreciated descriptions/analysis of both collective and intergenerational trauma and how to notice and work with their presence in oneself and in other individuals.

I'm not particularly convinced about the narrative of how this is to lead to collective social change. The narrative here felt idealist and anti-materialist. There was no engagement with any actually existing (present or historical) social movement which then seems to imply that the labor movement didn't bring us the weekend or the civil rights/Black power movement had no effect and the world would have been better off if young people hadn't sat at lunch counters but instead paid a professional facilitator (or therapist) to attune to them and members of the White Citizens Councils.

I am completely open to an engagement with effective social movements that explores how the work the author explores could have added to the power and effectiveness of those trying to build Beloved Community but that is not what the author engages with. (This may be connected with the author's frequent examples of business benefitting from the kind of consciousness promoted here with no explicit mention of working class existence; there is an implicit commitment not to recognize that market economics require cancerous growth by definition.)

I learned so much about tuning into my own body to create support and healing for myself. I’m also fascinated by the ideas around collective healing, which we so need right now. A must for anyone on a growth journey.

Understanding the sources, the individual and collective consequences, and the healing of trauma has gained momentum in the fields of medicine, psychology, neuroscience, and spirituality in recent years. Thomas Hubl’s newest offering is a comprehensive, compelling book that integrates ancient wisdom, mysticism, and modern quantum science in assessing the interdependence of all life.

In Part 1 the topics of stress, inner body attunement and transparent communication become the foundation for exploring how we connect or disconnect in relationships. The “Three Sync Practice” is a guide into deeper inner awareness to foster coherence between the body, the heart (emotions) and the mind. This, in turn, allows for greater relational attunement.

Part 2 provides background information leading to practices for healing Ancestral as well as Collective Trauma. I found this material illuminating, particularly the author’s practice entitled Global Social Witnessing. The Epilogue is an inspiring vision for what is possible for humanity and the planet if we heal the trauma sourcing so many of our personal and collective issues that threaten our very existence.

My one issue is the writing style felt at odds with the author’s premise. Overall, the tone felt formal and intellectual with little emotional connection. The examples of dialogue with clients did not reflect the whole-being attunement so eloquently described throughout the book. There is also a significant amount of terminology that requires a broad exposure to related fields.

This book is a valuable contribution to the growing awareness of the need to heal trauma on multiple levels. The recommended practices are easy to follow and offer practical means to apply the principles outlined in the chapters. This is a book that I will re-read to absorb in deeper consciousness and to practice in my personal and professional relationships.

My thanks to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for the privilege of reviewing this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This review is being posted immediately to my GoodReads account and will be posted on Amazon upon publication.

Filled with nuggets of wisdom and the invitation to lean in and expand our notions of trauma healing, Hübl once again takes his readers on a journey that weaves together insights from various fields - psychology, mysticism, socio-political understanding and a deep understanding of the patterns and structures playing out in society the world over. He truly is a thought leader, a heart leader, a spirit leader in this time and age of transformation and challenge. For that alone, I highly recommend this book, or in fact, any of his work.

Be warned, though, this is not a book for 'beginners' when it comes to trauma healing work. For anyone in that phase of their consciousness growth, it may still be 'a bit much', confusing, even hard to fathom at times. And yet, there's tremendous value in returning later, as I feel I too may want to in the years to come, suspecting there's layers upon layers here...

Bonus. There are a bunch of exercises and downloadable meditation tracks that come with this book.

I think this is a deeply important book. I want everyone to read it. Interpersonally, I think he’s onto something incredible. Even culturally I think he’s got a fascinating analysis.

I am also shocked he doesn’t really even mention the central role capitalism plays in disconnecting us. He talks about people who prioritize profits over connection and wellbeing. But he says attunement is the antidote. I don’t think he’s wrong exactly (I do think attunement is crucially important socially), but I think he really misses the forest for the trees by not naming that coming into right relationship with all beings means taking apart an economic system that has divorced us from our humanity and flourishing.

Okay but also definitely read this book.

With the realization that we are all interconnected, yet isolated from the complexities of our world and technology, Hubl helps us yo see the need to produce a “relational field.” This relational approach can help us combat the isolation, loneliness, decent, and trauma we have produced.
To heal ourselves and society from toxic stress and build resilience.
The first part of the nook unfortunately has a lot of repetition. Aldo, if mystical, ancestral or Jungian thought is confusing or foreign to you this will be a difficult book to accept and comprehend.
The second part some interesting thoughts on healing trauma and isolation on both the individual and societal level.

A call to our humanity, and a path to bring us home

I absolutely loved this book. A reminder of the power that lies within. A call to our humanity that connects and heals us. A calling to rise to the occasion- to come together to heal ourselves and through that each other, humanity and the planet. Incredibly eloquent and evocative language that touched my heart. Stories, examples, tools and techniques to bring this home to the day to day that has already made a big difference in my life. Highly recommended read.

A powerful articulation of hope

We all wonder what is ours to do in a world full of suffering. This book holds a key to unlocking massive healing. We must face and integrate, digest, transform the trauma that resides in us, our ancestors and all of humanity. I feel hopeful that this possible and a new gentler world can emerge. Although this was not what I was expecting, I liked this. There are some helpful approaches, ideas, and exercises, even though I didn't find all of it of value. I commend the author for making this info available. We need more focus on coming together and supporting each other regardless of anything else.

Thanks very much for the free copy for review!!

a very insightful and profoundly useful book!

This book is practical, useful, mystical as well as very timely. We are dealing with accumulated traumas historically and the way out is our own transformation.

Really hard to follow, and I couldn’t finish this book, though I appreciate the attempt to take on such an important topic of collective trauma. Hubl seems like a genuinely good human, but the writing just didn’t land for me.
