Lincoln is having a bad day. First, she breaks off her engagement. Then, she dies and comes back to life. To top it all off, she gets told that she is the last Deathwalker to show up in over a decade and she doesn’t even know what that word means. Her life has been completely overhauled in just under twenty four hours.
The silver lining is Priya, a beautiful badass who helps guide souls to the afterworld. As a Gatekeeper, it’s Priya’s job to keep the mortal realm and the afterworld separated. But things have been changing in the last few years. Demon attacks are growing and Deathwalker magic is practically non-existent these days. The only way to find out what’s going on is to visit the Queen of the afterworld and only Deathwalkers are permitted to go.
Lincoln is suddenly thrust into a world she knows little about and is forced to be a hero in a story she barely understands. Magic, love and mysteries start to unravel quickly as Lincoln is pushed to protect the mortal realm and Priya. The rest of the Gatekeeper’s believe she can do it but will that be enough? Lincoln will soon find out.

This book is intended for mature readers and contains spicy scenes not suitable for all. Reader discretion is advised.
Absolutely adored the representation in this book! A new fantasy author who knows how to get to my little gay heart. It reads super quickly and easily, and I thoroughly enjoyed the book and plot. Easy to follow! I do wish it was a tad longer and more beefed up with the content, as I feel some things were rushed, such as the main conflict. Would recommend this sweet Kansas City author! :)
The idea behind the book was very good, the characters and their backgrounds were defined and engaging, but everything felt rushed for me. I couldn't feel invested or really care for what was happening, although in theory it could work for me.
Some choices in the story development weren't for me either (a lot of somehow, I am ninja warrior now, somehow I had to skip all the process of something and here I am, they said). It could work for other folks though.
I enjoyed this so much!! I blew through it in one day while at the hospital waiting for my husband to have surgery. Madi’s writing just really works for me. This is the second book of hers that I’ve read and I was hooked from start to finish.
I love the fast-paced story, the diverse characters and the world-building. Honestly I just loved everything about it.
If you want a fast-paced, urban fantasy standalone with romance/spice sprinkled in, this the one!
(Also Lincoln and Priya had me BLUSHING. I loved them so much)
I loved this story so so much! I loved the world and it was more fast paced which was everything. The main characters Lincoln and Priya are sensational together. This is definitely a must read F/F Romance Fantasy Standalone
I received an ARC for an honest review of the book! Overall I enjoyed the book concept and the world in which the characters live. It was definitely different than other books I've read lately, and the plot was interesting and made me want to keep reading to find out what was going to happen. With that being said, the story felt a bit rushed so I had a hard time connecting with the characters and really empathizing with what they were going through. It also made it difficult to feel the relationship bond built between the characters because it happened very quickly and without a lot of build up. It almost felt like we were being told what to feel instead of being able to develop the feelings ourselves. I would love to read another book by this author as she creates a unique storyline, maybe one that could possibly be developed into a series so there's more of a chance to build out the story/world, etc.
For full transparency, I was given an ARC for Deathwalker, which I was very excited about since it was my first ARC. However, I had to DNF this book at 40%. The concept is really interesting, but the execution just wasn’t there for me. I felt like I was being told all of the character's thoughts and simple concepts were over-explained. Your audience is smarter than you’re giving them credit for. Leave things to the imagination, let the reader feel the emotion, and don’t explain every lesson right away. Maybe this writing style just wasn't for me, because it seems like others are really enjoying it!
As someone who came out later in life and has to go through that delayed self-discovery, this book hit home! I loved the coziness of Lincoln and Priya’s relationship , the excitement of learning there’s magic in the world , and the conversational tone of the story that felt like talking to a best friend.
The plus size representation was great too! I loved Lincoln’s comfort in her own body and the strength she was able to exude throughout the story.
I’ll definitely be reading more of Madison’s work and you should too!
I wanted to like this book so much. I liked the concept and the first half of the book had me hooked. The f/f relationship was on point. The premise was unique. But halfway through it felt like the author decided to use the book as a platform for their political and social ideals and I ended up dnfing shortly after. Not necessarily because I disagree with anything she wrote but because I read first and foremost as an escape from reality. This book was building an alternate universe so well and then brought me right back to all of today’s issues in the real world. It pulled me out of the book each time. That being said, if you don’t mind that sort of thing, it was shaping up to be a good book and you might like it.
I really liked the idea behind this story my only complaint is that the story felt very rushed through the majority of it. The ending seemed a little abrupt to me but I would definitely like to see if this author has more planned for this series because I really liked the world and the characters she created.
Honestly, a very refreshing relief from the same storyline and plot currently circulating the top of the charts.
I am obsessed with Linc! I love the whole story, and should the author decide to write another book in the series or even a spin off, I would 100% be here for that too.
I manage to finish this book in a little over 24 hours and the only reason it took that long was because of my sick child. This book was impossible to put down for me.
It's a standalone fantasy book with a new vision of afterlife that is just amazing.
Author wrote strong and fierce FMC with Queer love story.
I loved it how Lincoln learned to accept her body and not giving a fuck about what society thought. And how she didn't freak out about her sexuality and just accepted it.
The plot of the novel is GREAT but I don't know...it just wasn't captivating for me...The build-up was too slow and the ending was way too abrupt...according to me there should have been more action during the final scene...
In no universe is this an okay line to use! You instantly feel anxious and like something's about to change and for Lincoln this is how the domino effect started! The one thing she was most confident in with her life suddenly wasn't there anymore. She was already having a crisis and the ending of a relationship didn't help. Top it all off by dying and call it fantastic! But it's fine she came back to life like she always does. . .
Lincoln's world gets spun on its head when she meets Priya. Things about her past and present click into place along with the explanation of why she seems to have nine lives. But when Linc finds out she's the last of her kind that has appeared in a decade there's some slight pressure placed on her. Demons are threatening to break through, and Lincoln is the Gatekeepers' last hope. Can she do the tasks they are asking of her? Do demons really exist? And who's this Queen of the Afterlife?
"No more compromising what I want for the sake of love or an argument." - Lincoln
I could relate to Lincoln on so many levels! Having to end a relationship and being able to clearly see what it truly was. Piecing together things, seeing all the signs that were there, and remembering certain situations. You're left feeling like a fool for a lot of things but also realizing that you did those things because you thought you were in love. I loved how the author addressed different emotions and feelings when it came to break ups. Was also proud of Lincoln's next moves after the breakup and how she handled her ex!
"Aren't you supposed to have your sexuality figured out by the age of twenty-five?" - Lincoln
This line had me laughing so much because the answer is N-O! Even after you figure it out things may change, or you may lean more this way than that way. Like Lincoln I was raised thinking and believing I was this way and to do things accordingly. Not knowing anything different until I was out on my own and then it all just finally clicked. Lightbulb moment and of course moments of "why hadn't I seen the signs sooner?!"
I loved the concept of this book and the take on things! The afterlife, a secret society, information that could topple humanity, and so much more. I enjoyed Lincoln's personal growth through this book and how she was trying to navigate through her new life. One that she clicked with and could feel a connection to from within her gut. Along with the am I attracted to this? And is it okay?
"I don't mind. I'll hold you up anytime, love." - Priya
Priya has an English accent and I completely agree with Lincoln! English people should say "love" more even if it's simply platonic. I liked the dynamics between the two FMC leads and how they were able to open up with one another and have vulnerable moments. Priya's also someone you know not to mess with, she's not afraid to knock you on your butt.
We are dealing with death and beliefs on what happens when one dies. So, there's mention of such things along with grief and feelings of loss. Violence is in the book along with mention of blood and there's language. We have FF action that's a slow burn and trying to understand new feelings and attractions. Single POV through our curvy, strong female lead. The author even gives us a playlist we can look up to listen to as we read.
For me personally there were some slow moments and some of the dialogue was long winded. I still very much enjoyed the characters and the concept of this read. I also enjoyed all the LGBTQ+ representation in this book and how some of the characters didn't need labels. Labels being important to some while others are more blaze about it. We are all individuals!
I have to mention one last thing! I absolutely loved Mara! She's that ride or die, help you bury a body best friend who will stay with you until the very end. The book is a standalone with a HAE, but I think if the author wanted to, she could expand more within this universe. Maybe even bring about other books with different characters.
Enjoy this read with vibes of a female grim reaper and trying to save realms! Don't forget to give the author some stars!
This book was a quick, enjoyable read with a very interesting plot line and great representation.
I love the concept for this book, it reminds me of some of my favorite animes like Bleach. Humans having a secret society to protect the mortal world from demons is just always going to be a hit for me. And despite this being a common plot Nicole does a great job making hers stand out with the whole hidden powers thing. I really enjoyed the fat and bisexual representation especially as a fat bisexual myself! I loved that she accepted herself as a fat woman and was not self deprecating at all. I also really liked that she was fat but it wasn’t a main point of conflict or anything, there was no fatphobia there was no internal struggle, she was just fat. Very neutral. The sapphic representation is also lovely, I love that she just falls into her sexuality naturally, there’s no internal (or external) homophobia/biphobia. It was spicy but in a very beautiful and poetic way like the spicy scenes just help her solidify her sexuality and the happiness and pleasure she deserves and had previously been denied with Isaac.
Now I do have some aspects where I thought the book was lacking. It just felt very simple and linear to me, a little too straight forward. There is a conflict, she comes up with a plan to stop the conflict, and she does, boom happy ending book over. With how straightforward the story and writing is I think this could have worked better as a YA (minus the spicy scenes). Alternatively, another character perspective or, even better, another timeline perspective would have really elevated the story. Overall I just don’t think the plot is completely fleshed out. The explanation for the issues they’ve been having in the mortal realm as well as the enemy’s grand plan felt very rushed and just kind of thrown at you all at once. I think it would have worked better if she had slowly pieced together the villains plan rather than them just explaining it in a monologue. I feel like this was a recurring issue for me that really took away from my experience. I felt like I was being *told* information about this world rather than feeling like I was *discovering* it, if that makes any sense. I couldn’t really lose myself in the book, in the story. Another issue that played into this for me was the dialogue. I feel like a lot of the dialogue was the point Nicole wanted to get across and what she thought sounded nice but wasn’t actually how real life people talk in the moment. There’s just no subtlety in the writing it’s all spelled out for you. Like the queens conversation about social justice, it just felt very stilted, like ok *check* I got my social commentary in. I also felt like the romance wasn’t fully fleshed out. Like I loved it and I loved them but I just feel like it wasn’t built up enough, there wasn’t enough evidence (for me) to back up how strong their feelings were for each other. We practically know nothing about Priya besides her trauma, like that’s it. Again I just feel like it comes back to being rushed, not thoroughly fleshed out, and very straightforward.
All in all it was an enjoyable read and I highly appreciate the representation but it’s not something I would read a second time.
Triggers & Tropes: Death Magic, All Things Death & Dying, Graphic Violence, Plus Size FMC, Sapphic Romance, Heartbreak, Torture, Graphic Depiction of Injuries, Social Justice Commentary, etc. • Reading this after losing my mom [in October] was a pretty profound & comforting experience. It is easily a new favorite & comfort read for me.
Lemme rip the bandaid off, it could have been a 5-star read however there were a few things that stuck out & distracted me. The first was some repetition, mostly when it came to Lincoln expressing her gratitude for her best friend. Then there were the comparisons Lincoln made almost constantly between herself & others—that eventually stopped & could've been a trauma response to her heartbreak. And while I appreciated the social justice commentary, there were parts where it felt forced and/or out of place.
None of those things are bad, they just distracted me & that likely says more abt how my brain works. It doesn't change that this is an incredible story. It doesn't take away just how comforting it was to me. And it doesn't change it's status on my "favorites" shelf. • This book, the story is pretty complex & Madison does such a wonderful job telling it. She lays out the history of deathwalkers & gatekeepers beautifully. I highlighted all of their history bc I'm a total slut for lore.
I really loved Lincoln's bubbly, excitable nature too. While she's hurting, her life falling into place helps her move through it easily & healthily. She found pockets of light & stepped fully into them unapologetically w/out taking away from the gravity of her situation.
In general the characters were rich. I wanted to learn more abt Emir & Grey too. I appreciate how vivid the imagery was in this story. Some stories fall flat in imagery, usually those that focus more towards character dev. This one didn't. There was a nice balance btwn character development & world building.
I totally cried reading it, again the experience was profound for me bc I just lost my mom. I highly, highly recommend this book. There is entirely too much good abt it & not enough time to talk abt it all. 🖤
Deathwalker is a unique and enjoyable wlw fantasy novel!
I received an ARC of this novel for my honest review.
What you can expect from this book: - wlw romance - Queer self-discovery - Strong platonic friendships - Contemporary setting - Relatable, sassy humour - Mid-sized, confident protagonist - Unique magic + concept of the afterlife
“This was serious, save-the-world-or-die shit. And somehow, I ended up right in the middle of it.”
This book was a pleasure to read!
As a queer woman who has also dated/is currently dating a man, I saw a lot of my own journey in Lincoln’s. There is a keenness to the story that speaks to the authors own queer experience. The dedication at the beginning had me tearing up in a way so few do.
This book appeals to my own demographic of queer women, to those who have critiqued and cried and torn themselves apart to fit into heteronormativity. And though this book can be enjoyed by anyone, I think others with similar stories will garner the most enjoyment from Deathwalker.
Some favourite lines:
“Not to mention, showing your ass to someone is vulnerable, just like my emotional state at the moment.”
“The restlessness I’m sure you’ve felt in your soul isn’t because you’re broken. It’s because you were meant for something beyond this.”
I would highly recommend this book to anyone with a similar queer journey, or looking for an easily digestible and fresh fantasy novel. Well done to the author for such a great read!
Deathwalker was my second book from Madison Nicole.
Pros: LGBTQ+ and BIPOC characters, quick and easy read, I truly wish I had more pros because this book had so much potential
Cons: Similar to Madison Nicole’s previous book, the inner dialogue really keeps you from immersing yourself in the story. It felt like I was being told how to feel instead of reading the story to feel things on our own because the first half is basically a monologue about how much she hates her ex. (Which by the way, not condoning what he did but, why does the MC get to have big “Aha!” moments about life but when Isaac says he doesn’t want to marry Linc, it’s bad? I wanted to be on the MC’s side but if we’re being fair this is a complete double standard and makes me not feel bad for Linc at all 😅) While BIPOC representation is a good thing, it’s written in such a strange way. Just like the last book, the amount of times I read “brown hand” was just weird. I am BIPOC and for someone to keep being called brown is just odd. There are so many beautiful, different descriptions for our skin color and I can’t tell if it’s just naïveté of the author or just tone deaf. Overall this standalone was pretty difficult to get through. The story itself felt skimmed over and the end was so abrupt, it left me wondering why it’s just a standalone because I feel like there’s a lot missing.

it definitely had a bit of a slow start for me but once it got going, it really got going (about halfway in is when it really got good). i’m pretty stubborn about finishing books and i’m glad i stuck it out.
this book really made me feel like i was a little kid again reading my fav fantasy books (which might just be because i haven’t read a ton of fantasy as an adult)
things i loved: - woo! a POC as one of the leads! - woo! a plus size person as the main character! (and there was no mention of weight loss the entire time!!!!) - the world building!!! - the characters were really believable - ESPECIALLY the main antagonist (i won’t spoil anything) - the training and learning scenes were really fun! and the weapon she ends up choosing was super creative!
a few minor critiques: - at the beginning of the book, some of the writing and dialogue was a bit unnatural. as i kept reading, it became less noticeable so maybe i just got use to the writing style or the author got more comfortable as they wrote. who’s to say? - i don’t love pet names so the constant use of them (e.g. love, darling, child) was jarring. but that’s totally a me thing so if you don’t mind it, more power to you. - imo the author did a really great job of balancing the romance with the action but i will say that i was wanting a little more action at the beginning
urban fantasy, fantasy, magic, life and death, betrayal, mystery, war, strong fmcs, standalone, f/f romance, touch of spicy, life crisis, sexual awakening
When your on and off again boyfriend proposes you think this is it, that HEA. So before the wedding when he says he loves you but wants to call off the wedding you go and get drunk, hit on the cute bartender, and technically die. So when that cute bartender tells you about your near-death experiences equaling that you are special and not to blame for your restlessness and for a sexual awakening because you can't stop thinking about the said bartender at the same time discover who you are and what you're meant to be. I loved these ladies including BFF Mara. The overall concept of the story was great and entertaining but just some issues with the fast-paced movement of the story as some parts were rushed too early or could have been prolonged a little longer/detailed. Still loved it!
This was a very different take on the underworld and the magic system used to control death. I enjoyed the author's take on this world and her world-building. Lincoln fell into this deathwalker, underworld, afterlife situation in her twenties, leaving her behind the game of understanding how it all worked. While learning about all things that go bump in the night she discovers that she is attracted to women or one woman. I enjoyed walking reading going down that journey with her. I did feel the pacing was a little off, slow in the beginning and fast at the end, but I find that common with books where there is worldbuilding so I just keep pushing through, and I was not disappointed at the end. I recommend this book if you are looking for something that doesn’t fit or follow the same lines you often find in books about magic, the underworld, and the afterlife. **I received an ARC for this book for my honest review.
I really enjoyed this book overall, and finished it in a few hours (spread out across several days). Priya and Lincoln already have my heart, and I wish that Deathwalker weren’t just a standalone. They couldn’t have a moment of peace without being interrupted by demons and dark magic! I’d kill for a novella of them just living life together happily.
There were some minor errors in punctuation/grammar, but that’s to be expected from an ARC, and they didn’t in any way impede the flow of the book. The main characters felt realistic, and Lincoln’s confused obsession with Priya at first before the moment of realization was definitely relatable, though the villains and side characters could’ve been developed more.
4 stars! I highly recommend Deathwalker to anyone looking for a relatively quick sapphic urban fantasy read.
“I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s like that was Part One of my life and this is Part Two. Almost like my life is, like, its own book duology. And book one is over. It doesn’t have a hold on me anymore.”
I’ve received this ARC in exchange for a review with my honest opinion. In short — I liked it a lot! And now, in long: It’s been a ride. From the beginning where you learn of Lincoln being different than the usual human (the taxi was a paid actor!). About Priya who opens doors to a world beyond your imagination while still co-existing with our world. Responsibilities, secrets and you also get sapphic love. For some reasons, I had minimally Supernatural but also tiiiny slices of Shadow and Bones’ vibes. But mostly it was more of a “that’s it’s own thing” kind of way. Anyways, it’s been a nice read and I’m thankful for having been an ARC reader.
Recommend for anyone who is at a point in their life where they feel displaced or unsure how to move forward. MC is in mid 20s but anyone going through their own awakening can relate to her.
Thank you to the author for consulting communities and giving representation to people who haven't been given space in many communities, including publishing. Your work is appreciated and I hope the strong character in this book inspires young women everywhere to stand up for themselves and go for what they want in life!
This was a must-read for me. I loved the plot of the story, and I instantly connected with Lincoln as a character. I saw a lot of myself in her with her past body image issues as well as her figuring out if she wanted to be Priya or be with her. I loved the new take on the underworld and how the afterlife was portrayed. I think it can be hard to read about the underworld/ afterlife when it is stuck in the heaven/hell scope. I really liked the depiction of death in itself as well. It was an easy read and definitely something I will be sharing with friends. It is a standalone, but I would love to read an Emir and Grey story in the future because I want more of these storyverse.

ARC Review: Oh my! What a great Sapphic read! Lincoln and Priya had me squealing like a schoolgirl when they are together. They are amazing. Madison’s writing had me hook from the moment Linc walked into that bar and found out shortly after that she was a Death Walker. Linc can travel between both the living and the dead. Once the vail was removed she saw ghost, wraiths, and demons, but have this power comes with its own challenges and secrets. Learning to navigate all this is just the beginning for Linc and the gatekeepers. If you love reading about fantasy, romance, and adventure with some extra saucy spicy, this book is definitely for you.
I think I have an emotional connection to this book just because I related to a lot of the stuff Lincoln has gone/goes through. I loved her and Priya’s little love connection and I found it so adorable and sweet. I also loved Lincoln and Mara’s friendship I just wish we got more of Mara because she was definitely my favourite character.
The only thing stopping this from being a five-star for me is simply because I’m not big on the whole world-building in fantasy books so as much as I was still invested in the final battle it wasn’t entirely for me personally.
If you want a paranormal sapphic romance I highly, highly recommend this book!
When I had the opportunity to read a fantasy sapphic romance I jumped on it! I love the concept of the story, and the intention put into it. The writing felt a little clunky, and perhaps could have used another edit or two to work out the timing (storyline went very fast) and character development (felt like I didn’t have enough time to know and love the characters like they deserve). Overall a very sweet read, and I’m excited to see what else will come from this author!
First I want to say thank you for Madison for the ARC!
This was such a fun fast paced read and the magic system and plot line were so refreshingly different. I loved the witty banter and the characters were dynamic and super interesting.
My only complaint would be that I wish it was longer so that the plot had time to naturally develop. I felt like things fell too easily together and so I lacked that usual feeling of despair in wondering how things will work out.
First thing’s first: I really enjoyed parts of this book! The first third was LOVELY and imaginative and humorous. The middle 2/3 was fine, it’s the last third I struggled with. there were so many plot holes!! And like normally if there are one or two small ones, I can forgive it, but…they were massive and most of them took place in the last 25 pages, which really soured my experience reading this. // Sapphic, urban fantasy
Technically this is a DNF. I make get back to it but I felt the writing was well, it could use an editor. There were some tense issues and also I think the author needs to research Indian names because while different religions in India can be racially similar, they’re not ethnically similar names and last names not only indicate religions. They also indicate which region or part of India. The family is from Indian culture is not a monolith. It is extremely culturally heterogeneous
