"[A] well-researched, gracious and truthful account." -- Georgian Bay Today When her husband proposed living on a boat full-time, Debra Cantrell wondered what other women in her position had done and began a five-year study to find out what choices they had made and how it had all worked out. The result is Changing Course , a guidebook for navigating this odyssey. No matter what the outcome, each woman was strengthened by the experience. In an era when "downshifting" is common and people are considering the benefits of simplified living, Changing Course is both timely and practical.
An easy enjoyable read. Comforting to know I am not alone in my feelings of fear, terror, frustration and ambivalence in our plans to live aboard. Have passed it onto my husband. Some of it is a little outdated and also some suggestions can appear a bit condescending. An update would be great
A straight-forward approach to easing someone into the cruising lifestyle. A little bit dated in regard to technological advancements, and more suited to an older generation of women who are unsure and even fearful of sailing and living on the water. Some good tips on dealing with fear in general, though, and some true stories from women who've lived on sailboats that will definitely stick with me. I'll be taking this book with me onto the boat as reference material.
With insights from lots of different women boaters, both power and sail, this book covers a lot of the same topics and concerns that I had as we decided to move from "dreaming" about cruising to actually going ahead and making our dream a reality. I recommend this book for everyone planning to embark on an offshore adventure. It's one book I'd really like to get Chris to read because I am not the only worrier out there.
More of an emotional take on what it is to change one's life for another's dreams - and how to make those dreams part of yours. This book is certainly geared for the "old school" woman, one that lives her life for/through her partner. Interesting, yet it is more a book that I will send my mother to deal with her issues when I cast off...
It is a bit dated but there is some useful information. I think it will be very beneficial for people who are planning to spend large quantities of time on their boats. I don't feel like it really addressed what we are seeking to do as we start out, but regardless there was some very good information.
This book is written by a woman who's husband dreamed of sailing away and her decision to go along for the ride. Great read for anyone who has ever contemplated going on an extended sail.
A decent prep course on what to expect and ask about the emotional commitment of setting sail. Seems to be written for the more affluent potential cruisers but a useful thought provoker for all.
