Slapping the man who groped her isn’t a good career move But successful ad executive Emily Archer has had it up to here with salacious looks and sexist comments. Unfortunately, the person she smacked is a top executive of her company’s biggest client. Instead of sitting in her hard-earned corner office pouring over marketing proposals, Emily is seeing an EMDR psychotherapist and digging deep into her past to understand what caused her to snap.
As Emily peels back the layers of her memory to reveal the traumatic assault she suffered as a teen, the face of her attacker gradually becomes clear. A man with a shiny public persona—and a secret as dirty as a back-alley dumpster. Who laughs in her face from behind the safety of the statute of limitations.
Determined to stop him from harming anyone else, Emily dodges his threats—and police warnings not to interfere—to connect the dots. The closer Emily gets to the truth about her attacker, the closer she comes to a dangerous confrontation where she could be his next—and final—victim.
Her Past Can’t Wait is a gripping novel about resilient women fighting back, protecting each other, and healing.
Emily Archer is wound tighter than a knot, and she doesn’t stop to wonder why until someone gropes her at a company event and she slaps him. So begins Emily’s look into her past, aided by a psychotherapist and a treatment that helps her uncover the source of her frustration and anger.
Part mystery and part thriller, this debut novel will keep you riveted with great writing and storytelling, a super-important and timely topic, and suspense that doesn’t let up until the very end.
A moving and layered story, Her Past Can't Wait is an emotional and insightful journey of trauma and healing. Boulden’s debut brings a shining light to change needed in long accepted societal norms and the secrets many women have hidden from the world and even themselves. A brilliant novel showing the protective power of the mind and the miraculous healing of psychotherapy from trauma woven with friendship, resilience, and mystery—a brilliant read.
Her Past Can’t Wait tells a story of sexual abuse that will keep you turning the pages. The heroines are strong and dynamic and the vivid descriptions of EMDR gave me a much-appreciated education. This is a sensitively written book that’s a good reminder to everyone of a still rampant problem.
It was an honor to read the advanced reader copy of Her Past Can’t Wait. This debut novel is a page-turning mystery about Emily, a strong businesswoman who must deal with a memory of being assaulted as a teenager. As an adult, she begins the healing process using EDMR therapy, a powerful technique to relieve trauma.
When Emily seeks to find her assailant and put him behind bars, she learns he’s become a television celebrity. A much larger mystery unfolds when Emily teams up with her sister to help solve a recent crime. Jacqueline Boulden not only skillfully handles the difficult topic of sexual abuse, but she also educates the reader about the benefits of EDMR therapy, which many will find to be very helpful.
This is a very suspenseful and moving novel about healing, sisterhood, and what women can achieve when they reclaim their power and identity.
What an engaging and fascinating read! I grew more attached to the characters and story as the book unfolded, and kept turning those pages straight through the explosive ending. Wow! It touches on an area of therapy that I'd never heard of before, so if therapy is a sensitive area for you, please know that going in.
I purchase this book several months ago at an event at my local library and finally got around to working on my TBR pile. I certainly identified with the protagonist being sick and tired of misogyny and the way that women who stand up to sexual harassment and abuse are treated. I feel that anger and resentment deeply. My only quibble with the book is that sometimes felt too clinical or removed, which impacted my ability to fully immerse myself in the story. A strong debut nonetheless and I hope the author writes more books.
This novel should probably come with a trigger warning as it could be distressing for some readers who have experienced trauma in their past! At the same time, it may be a cathartic read for women (or, indeed, anyone) with PTSD from abuse in their youth. The author Jacqueline Boulden has crafted a well-written and well-researched novel on being a survivor of teen trauma, on healing your past and on confronting perpetrators who may be shielded by power and status. The author also describes the therapy the protagonist undergoes in realistic detail, which may help some readers discover a new and useful form of therapy.
At the same time, the novel is a page-turner and will keep readers engrossed and wanting to find out what happens next. I recommend this book for thriller fans and those who may want to understand PTSD, or are suffering from PTSD themselves.
Jacqueline Boulden, author of “Her Past Can't Wait: A Fast-paced, Riveting Psychological Thriller”, is such a great writer. There’s a lot to say about this novel. It is a well developed psychological thriller which was carefully thought out and in which details matter a lot. Also, the author portrays resilient and strong women, something I found different and interesting. It is easy to empathize with Emily, she may be any of our friends. The character was well constructed and developed throughout the story. I would undoubtedly recommend reading Her past can’t wait. I could see many things from society reflected in this story.
Her Past Can't Wait will grab you from the first page until the last. Ms. Boulden's debut novel will have you sitting on the edge of your seat and holding your breath. Fabulous new book. Can't wait for her next novel.
I really did enjoy, "Her Past Can't Wait." As someone who has experienced EMDR and how wonderful it has helped me deal with past trauma, I enjoyed its use in this story. I did find the interlocking character arcs to be a little too convenient, and the story did wrap up very neatly. Maybe too neatly. But the one thing I truly enjoyed from this book was how therapy helped rape victims in a way that supported and validated their experiences. It's definitely a must-read.
You might think what happens in our life stays in a distance memory, somewhere that only happens to interrupt us when we want to reminisce. Her Past Can't Wait shows us how brain chemistry actual forces us to look at our most traumatic memories in order to move forward in life, and ultimately, recover. A thrilling story about one person's life and how it intersects multiple childhood stories in a lovely setting, this book kept me reading with clear characters and a driving plot that resolves with finesse.
I was excited to win this book from Goodreads and Jacqueline Boulden. I thought it was a very interesting topic that I knew nothing about - using EMDR therapy to help with past trauma. Based on the summary I thought it would be a page turner, but for some reason I just REALLY struggled to get in to it. It took me six weeks to finish and that is very unlike me. Ultimately I found it interesting and the ending did shock me a bit, but I probably would say it was 3-3.5 stars overall. Decent thriller but not as exciting as I hoped.
Once I started I couldn't stop reading. I was ready to solve any problems coming my way after the book. It was uplifting and empowering. I highly recommend this book.
While the main character of the story is Emily there are many more here with striking stories that are connected to her Clara and Laura some of them. And the stories they all have to tell our appointment, striking, and timely. Emily is assaulted at a corporate function but she's not believed and soon finds herself hunting for her truth in her past with a therapist. This all starts to put her down a path, a dangerous path of figuring out a past assault and if she is actually still being hunted by the one who wronged her. Well this might seem like your average Thriller the fact that one in three women is sexually assaulted in the United States in their lifetime at least once, makes this book even more of a thriller too many. I know for me some spots in this book were extremely hard to read because they reminded me of my own. As such I think that this book is an extremely good book to read. It was well written the characters were flushed out and believable even in their trauma and the abusers were portrayed in a realistic manner, meaning that what they did is not out of the ordinary as much as it might seem to some people. I highly recommend this book.
Her Past Can't Wait is a fascinating and original novel about resilient women. The plot revolves around Emily Archer, a successful executive who, frustrated with harassment and sexist comments, hits a senior executive who is her company's main client. This will take her to therapy, and there are profound revelations, such as the traumatic assault she suffered as a teenager.Despite police warnings not to interfere, Emilly is determined to find out who the attacker was.
It is a novel that I thoroughly enjoyed, a story about women's rights, workplace and street harassment, which we all face and is unfortunately more common than we realize. It is not easy to face these traumas, and without a doubt, this novel tells us about facing our fears, overcoming them, and as women, protecting each other. This book left me with a good impression, and I will enthusiastically recommend it to my friends.
Her Past Can't Wait is a psychological thriller about a sales executive woman called Emily. Emily has been sexually assaulted by men before and it has happened again to her in the workplace. She can't handle it anymore emotionally, so the company obligates her to go see a psychologist to dig up the past about this particular trauma.
The book was really entertaining. The narrative goes direct to the point and doesn't bother with too many unnecessary details (something I much adore). The reading got more intense as I read the following chapters, trying to know more about Emily and the trauma behind it. This is a story of survival, where you learn what it means to survive this particular type of trauma as a woman and how to defend yourself from people that won't believe your story. Amazing storytelling. Highly recommended it!
Her Past Can't Wait is a riveting psychological thriller by Jacqueline Boulder. After experiencing sexual harassment at a work event, Emily Archer has to save face by attending psychotherapy for slapping a client. This therapy uncovers a traumatic assault in her past, but her now multiple-time assaulter is standing behind the protections of money, power, and the statute of limitations. This was a great read because it captures the frustration and pain from being taken advantage of but not believed. Not only is the protagonist someone that I was rooting for nonstop, but any instances of healing or protection toward Emily hit twice as hard as well.
Her Past Can´t Wait is a psychological thriller written by Jacqueline Boulden. This is the type of book worth reading in the society we live in nowadays; it's a novel that highlights the unconscious traumas left by abuse, and follows the process Emily Archer had to go through to redefine and understand herself, and to find her attacker.
Besides the psychological part, this book is beautifully written, the story is passionate and keeps the reader interested till the last page. When Emily realizes in therapy what she had been through as a teen, she starts to hunt this person to make sure he can´t harm anyone else.
“Her Past Can't Wait” by Jacqueline Boulden is a hard-hitting and timely novel in the #metoo era. Boulden tells the story of a woman who rediscovers memories of her teen trauma and abuse and who resolves this trauma not only through therapy but also through going after the perpetrator.
While the novel deals with some very heavy topics such as sexual assault, the abuse of power, the misuse of status in the workplace and the (apparent) untouchability of perpetrators with social and financial status, it is also an action-packed thriller. Boulden manages something that only a few thriller writers achieve – combining page-turning excitement and suspense with a very real and important underlying message (without the novel coming across as preachy).
In “Her Past Can't Wait”, by author Boulden, we can appreciate the talent at storytelling the author has. The narrative is completely immersive and descriptive; I felt inside the story from the beginning. This is a gripping novel I really liked reading. The strong woman role depicted here is something I really liked reading; I was a bit tired of reading about weak women in main roles in books, those who wait for their enchanted prince. This book is different. It shows how resilient women can be. Emily’s character is like reading about a friend; it was easy to empathize with. I recommend reading this book which captivated me completely.
Her Past Can't Wait by Jacqueline Boulden is a book that will have you on the edge of your seat, holding your breath at times, with your emotions all over the place. It is hard to believe that this is the first book that Boulden has written. While reading Her Past Can't Wait, it feels like she should have thirty books on the shelves of bookstores and libraries. She is a born story teller and I look forward to seeing what she writes next.
In Her Past Can't Wait readers are introduced to Emily Archer who has a pretty good life. She has a great job, amazing friends, a sister and family that she is close to, she couldn't ask for anything better. But one night at a company event, everything changes when she is groped by a client who she reacts to by slapping him. This leads to her being asked to take some time off from work. Not realizing that the anger that she felt by being groped by this client brought a painful childhood experience to the surface.
Emily's best friend and co-worker, Martin, gives her the name of his therapist, Mandy. Mandy works with Emily through a technique called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Mandy helps Emily with her anger and frustration and Emily is able to recall the horrible experience and is able to identify the person responsible.
It turns out that this person may be closer that Emily thinks when someone who works with her sister Cara is attacked. Emily, with the help from Mandy and her sister, begins to heal as well as help this other victim, Laura. Getting justice for what happened to Laura and Emily is all that Emily can focus on.....unfortunately this takes her down a very dark and dangerous road.
Boulden draws the reader in immediately and you will not want to put the book down until you read the last word. And the end of the story is explosive....you may just fall out of your seat from being so close to the edge.
Simply amazing! A story to keep you on the edge of your chair.
Emily slapped a top executive’s biggest client, and she did it for a good reason! He groped her at the company’s party. However, behind the slap, there was something even worse—something triggered her action. All the frustrations and anger all boil down to the same problem—something in her past was fueling her anger and she was determined to deal with it. Emily resorts to visiting a psychotherapist to help her understand better why she acts the way she does. As she begins to take slow steps back to reveal the assault, which she endured in her past that has kept her in bondage for many years, the events became clearer, and she now knows the personality behind her assault. Then come the threats and continuous warnings by the police to keep her from interfering in the case. But Emily was determined to stop this man before he gets the chance to hurt more people. As she draws closer to the answers she needs, the more dangerous the events become. One wrong move and Emily may become his final victim.
FINALLY finished a book! I’ve been in a bit of a slump and haven’t had time or energy to read. This was a book I found at a local book festival. I met the author and even got a signed copy! I truly enjoyed this book. I know if I had more time I would’ve finished much sooner. I’m giving this 4/5 stars. There is a bunch of moments where the author leaves you questioning what is going to happen next. At one point I did feel like the investigation was being dragged out. However, when I approached the ending, everything seemed to speed up and become more intense. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves a good thriller.

When Emily and her sister team up a larger mystery unfolds.
This book was an amazing story showing the trust women need in order to talk about trauma. So many women out there are sexually assaulted or beaten and the women are scared to come forward because who will believe them over the man? It was a great telling of how women need to be trusted that they are telling the truth and how that trust can help them tell their story so they can heal. It's important for women to feel they can come forward with information and know they will be heard!
I quickly became caught up in this book and didn't want to put it down. Mystery and suspense as this story unfolds and long buried tramatic memories start to bring truth into light. Terrific audio narration
I was at a local book fair this past weekend, when I walked by a table that immediately caught my eye. There were two books featured, Her Past Can't Wait and Family Ties and Family Lies by Jaqueline Boulden. I continued on meandering through the streets of the book fair, but there was something about the cover of those two books (yes, I definitely DID judge a book by it's cover) that drew me in and made me want to know more. I circled back to Jaqueline Boulden's table and I am so glad I did. Not only did we have a lovely little chat, but I picked up a copy of Her Past Can't Wait. Her Past Can't Wait is engaging and engrossing read. The novel is extremely well written and extremely thought provoking. And while the topics explored in this book are heavy, the story is one you want to continue reading. I stayed up well past my bedtime to finish the book!!! After closing the page on this novel, I went straight to Barnes and Noble and ordered Jacqueline Boulden's second novel Family Ties and Family Lies and am eagerly awaiting its arrival!! I recommend you RUN not walk to pick up a copy of Jaqueline Boulden's book Her Past Can't Wait. You won't be disappointed!!!! So excited to discover a new author!!!

A gripping and fast-paced psychological thriller...
"Her Past Can't Wait" by Jacqueline Boulden is a gripping and fast-paced psychological thriller that follows Emily Archer, a successful ad executive who takes a stand against sexual harassment. As she confronts her past and seeks justice, she becomes entangled in a dangerous web of secrets and threats. This riveting novel explores themes of resilience, empowerment, and the bonds between women. Jacqueline Boulden skillfully weaves suspense and psychological depth, creating an unforgettable reading experience. Highly recommended.
Her Past Can't Wait is a whodunnit, but it's not a murder mystery. It's an intelligent story about women who search for their attacker. Don't classify this as a book only for women. It is an important story about women. And for men, it provides a front seat to experience what it can be like for a woman living in a male-dominated culture. And Jacqueline Boulden can tell a good story. There are plenty of mysteries to allow a reader to wonder what is going to happen next.
