People can buy your silence, but not your loyalty… Macy Taylor was born in the shadow of Tavistock Square, at the heart of her Manchester estate. It’s got a reputation as a place where bad things happen. But it’s kept her secrets and she’s kept its code of silence. If you need something sorting, or want something you can’t get anywhere else – no questions asked – then you go to the Square. But everything in life comes at a price. Leanne Taylor is seventeen – she doesn’t understand why her mother wants her to keep clear of the life she led as a teenager. Leanne’s got dreams, but they don’t come cheap and the only people with money and power she knows are the boys and men that make their deals in the alleys and dark corners of the Square. For mother and daughter, it’s time to work out what they really care about, how fiercely they’ll fight to protect it, and what they’ll do when one day, the trouble they’ve worked so hard to outrun comes right to their own front door…

3 Stars for The Deal (audiobook) by Karen Woods read by Emma Gregory.

I just didn’t connect with this story. It’s about the wasted lives of shoplifters and drug runners in the UK.

Macy Taylor lives with her boyfriend and children on the Manchester estate she has lived on all her life, she knows you keep your secrets close to your chest.
Leanne Taylor at 17 has hopes to escape and live out her dreams of a better life. But the good life needs money and to get that you need to mix with people who don't play by the rules.
Both women have to work out when to keep quiet and who to protect and at what cost.
A fantastic gritty read with a brilliant storyline and characters.

What a great crime book, following one family ( the Taylors) and their deceit, lies, and fears.
They live near the dreaded Tavistock square on a Manchester estate, where drugs are dealt, crime is committed and deals are made.
Karen Woods certainly knows how to write a crime book and this one didn't disappoint. Full of everything you want in a book of this caliber. Another well-written thriller with twists and turns to make goosebumps go up on the back of your neck.

Not as good as her other books
I like a book I can't put down and unfortunately this wasn't one of those stories.

I enjoyed the story just not enough twists and turns.
Not enough action.

The Deal

Interesting read, but not one of her best. Got fed up with repetitive lines throughout the book …. “It is what it is” not as gripping as I expected hence 3 stars.

A very easy read. I enjoyed this book yet thought it seemed a little lacking of some of Karen’s usual ‘grit.
A little slow to start with but the second half of the book ramped up and it became a great, interesting read.
Some great characters that are relatable and as usual I love reading books that are set in and around places I know.

Not the greatest book I have read, dull and predictable story line and lots of grammatical errors. Could have done with being proof read properly.
