Falls Creek #1

What Hurts Us

Rate this book
Asking Layla Mousavi to be my fake fiancé wasn’t the weirdest thing I had done this week. It didn’t even crack the top ten. Not when my days were filled with escaped pigs, radioactive casseroles, and cow-induced car crashes.
_____________

The population of Falls Creek, North Carolina, is a collective menace to society. Layla thought the first line of her orientation packet was a joke, but she soon realized it was all facts. After only a few hours on the job, the whip-smart flight nurse found herself flying headfirst into small-town drama.

Police Officer Callum Fletcher needs a fiancé, and he needs one fast.

His best option? The alluring nurse who had put him back together after one of his worst days on the force. She was the new girl in town and needed a place to stay.

The elusive bachelor could handle a temporary roommate if she could handle a town full of gossiping busybodies, his meddling grandma, and a former date who still had her sights set on being the future Mrs. Fletcher.

The only problem?

Layla Mousavi doesn’t date cops anymore. Especially ones with commitment issues the size of a Ferris wheel.

“Fadat besham, Asal.”
Three words paralyzed me. I am willing to sacrifice myself for you, Honey.

Just so wonderful and feel good. A persian flight nurse heroine? I mean come on. I knew I had to give this book a try after learning Layla is Persian and her hero is calling her "asal" in Book 2, that had my antennas go up and eager to go back and read this. I was nervous but I have to give Maggie C. Gates her brownie points for really doing her research with all the details as far as language and customs, either she knows someone Persian who helped her out or she really did her homework. Some things were a bit exaggerated as far as customs go and religious practice and how phrases are used in what context were a bit wrong but even so, I was very surprised? and impressed by her thoroughness and care.
“But I’m most thankful that you spent your life making your soul just as beautiful. Dooset Daaram, hamsar-am.”

I just love and adore bilingual romances, whisper sweet nothings in my ear in another language and it really does things for me. I mean a hero who learns Farsi to tell the heroine how he feels? COME ON. Heart melting. Ovaries gone. He learned how to make her chai with nabat. This book made me want to squeal out loud like a lunatic. GIVE ME A CALLUM FLETCHER PLEASE. 😭 This is supposed to be a fake engagement to lure away an aggressive suitor. Yes the motive behind the fake engagement is contrived as hell and very thin but the chemistry was there, the sexual tension was fire and emotional connection was great and made up for the ludicrous plot device to push these two together. Callum Fletcher the grumpy town cop falling for Layla Mousavi was fun, so sweet and very sexy. Layla was a great combination of badass and vulnerable. Being a trauma flight nurse is very intense and not for the weak. Amazing what they do and are complete superheroes. I was a little nervous in the beginning with how Layla was hung up and licking her wounds over her ex who pretty much used her as a fuckbuddy while he was in love with someone else. But thankfully that was a very small blip and she got over it once the fake engagement kicks in. The whole Khastegāri courting gestures was divine and so cute. Persian families don't fuck around when a khastegari comes around. We take it seriously. 😂 I was in my feels. For a grumbly guy who likes to keep to himself, Callum is very sweet and a complete Southern gentleman underneath the rough exterior. This guy was "faking" it but putting in all the *real* work and effort in falling for her. And I don't know how Maggie Gates does it but she manages to take such simple scenarios and elevate it to another level with the sexual tension. My gawd! The engagement photos on his Harley motorcycle? Ooooooof. So sexy. 🔥 I already read Book 2 which was also very cute but this one probably is my favorite. I wish this series was longer than 3 books, it's a small town with a big ensemble cast which made it seem like story set ups for future couples was in the works. Great read and so fun. You get all the romance, tenderness, small town drama/humor, steam, medical profession all in one. Absolutely recommend this one!
“You’re the piece of my heart that I didn’t know was missing,” I said as I pressed my forehead to hers.

"Your turn. Tell me one of your secrets."
"I love you."

This is a two POV book, told by the POV´s of Layla and Callum.

I really liked Layla, she´s a really strong, badass FMC. She doesn´t necessarily need Callum´s help, she´s quite independent and strong minded but also really sweet and caring to those around her that she loves. Callum is a grump on the outside but a total cinnamon roll on the inside. I loved how caring he was to those close to him and how he did everything for Layla, even being quite the romantic sometimes.

Regarding side characters I really liked Beth, she seems like a really interesting character to me and I can´t wait for her book in the series. I loved Callum´s and Layla´s families and how they interacted with each other, it felt so cozy and homey.

Plotwise I liked that this is a slowburn with a good build up. We have a fake dating trope with a smalltown setting and also no miscommuncation part at 3/4, which I also quite enjoyed. The pacing of the book was well done, only the ending felt a little bit too slow/a bit too drawn out and could have been shorter to me. I also have to say with the title I expected the book to me a bit more "trauma filled" and about hurt/healing journeys if that makes sense, but it ended up being quite the cozy and cute read. (Not that there is anything wrong with that!). You can expect spicy scenes in here.

Overall it was an entertaining read and I will definitely continue the series.

trigger warnings: metions of childhood trauma, mentions of drugs/addiction, mention of gang wars, hostage situation, death

A book that captivated me from the very first pages . A small town with an insanely wonderful atmosphere. Where everyone knows and supports each other, and it's very endearing. I fell in love with this small town and its residents. It was very interesting to watch the characters because Callum is a sullen guy and Layla is a beautiful cheerful girl. It all started with one meeting and a crazy offer to play a fake relationship. And it worked very well for them. Layla, who has sworn off dating a cop, falls in love for real. Callum, who thought he wasn't worthy of love because he had a duty to the city, falls in love first and hard. It was interesting to watch them with their funny nicknames, and the way they teased each other was really funny. Their humor was excellent. We have a wonderful healthy, strong relationship here. Callum fell in love so much that he even issued a fine to his fiancee. And the cute old gossips were just on top. All this described the atmosphere of the town well. I enjoyed this book. I think I'll read it again and again. 💞💞💞💞💞💞

5/5 😍

“I’m not perfect. I just like the way my broken pieces fit with yours.”

This follows Layla, a flight nurse who moved to a small town for a change after a situationship with someone she fell for but he didn’t reciprocate. Starting fresh in a new town first day on the job she met a grumpy cop named Callum who was hurt on a call. Every year the town has a charity auction for all the single males to be bid on. Callum is expected to attend but he needs a plan to get out of it but doesn’t want to hurt his grandma's or the town's feelings by not attending. That’s when he decides to ask the new girl in town for some help.

This book was such a feel-good read by the end. I started feeling these characters' connection after the 40% mark and loved where it was going. At first, it felt fast and pushed which personally I struggled with as they didn’t know each other. The jumping in fast felt unrealistic as she wasn’t known in the town and was new. But I fell in love with Callum and Layla and how they worked well together. The way he would carry her, care for her and set boundaries until they couldn’t anymore, made me swoon. The spice was incredible and had me shocked. Maggie knows how to write spice that has you weak. The audiobook is great as well and enjoyed the dual narration. Loved Samantha’s take on the male bits in her sections.
Looking forward to the next book in the series!

I wanted to love this book so much, but it was a slow read and I was bored a lot.
I am all for nicknames or pet names, especially considering this is my own (honey) but it felt like I read HONEY every other word, it got a littleeee to much for me.
Also one day she said she wasn’t going to fall in love and then the next she is in love with him? Felt like she fell soooo quick when they were barely talking and only seeing each other in passing.
Also really a fake fiancé just to not have a date with Brandi??? Dramatic, tell her you’re not interested.

4/4.5⭐️ Small town romance between Layla, a flight nurse who just moved back home and Callum, a police officer.

I enjoyed this book. The characters were refreshing- Layla’s profession and heritage (Iranian) were super interesting. I come from an emergency medicine background so I loved that aspect. The MCs had great chemistry and banter. The story has a lot of good tropes.

I deducted because I wanted there to be more drama. Nothing was terribly exciting and I actually felt like some parts dragged. Even the part that was supposed to be the climax wasn’t terribly thrilling. I also don’t feel like the supporting characters were interesting so I’m not sure about continuing the series.

Tropes: fake relationship, forced proximity, grumpy sunshine

– Те, як Кел постійно вважає, що це його місто. Ноуп, ти не Бог, ти не президент, ти не мер 🥱 В кінці кінців не останній поліцейський цього міста;

Falls Creek is nutty, but I love it.

Maggie has found the perfect combination of fun loving and heart wrenching and put it in this book. Cal and Layla are two beautifully broken people that were able to fill each others gaps.

I loved the drama that comes along with them both being first responder and the addition of the flight crew was a unique aspect. Overall great book, 4.5 stars and I am happily downloading ‘What Heals Us’ as I type!

🩺 small town
🚓 fake engagement rouse
🩺 police officer x flight nurse
🚓 i could fix him (literally)
🩺 she fell first he fell harder

mini blurb — ✍🏻
Layla just accepted a new job in town as a flight nurse, she never expected on her very first day to save the beloved police officer in town, Cal, from a car accident that broke his leg and left him believing he was going to be abducted by aliens on his way to the hospital. Maybe that's why he decided to ask her to pretend to be his fake fiancée just to rid himself of the towns' folk pestering him 24/7.

//

“I want to be your home. I want to be the place where you know it’s safe to fall apart.”

This was so cute and wholesome!

Beside the utterly and total menace that were the whole lot of those town people... I get it was a little bit exaggerated for the sake of the book but there's a fine line between slightly clingy and intrusively rude in none of your business and genuinely accommodating and welcoming people. That was too much.

That said, Cal 💞 man he had issues but Layla took a look at his broody figure and said dead in his eyes I could fix you AND SHE DID.
He had commitment issues the size of Australia but honestly he could do nothing to resist her sorry not sorry, if anyone deserves the world is Layla, she was patient and good and caring and yes, Cal always put the people around him first before himself but also did Layla, and knowing she was going straight for another heartbreak if he didn't got his head out of the sand.
Part of me wanted a man who would tell me to stay when it was selfish of him to do so.

⚠️Caution might be a slight spoiler so read at your own risk it isn’t a big one but it is there

This book was absolutely perfect! I don’t think I have a bad thing to say about it. I loved every single second of it. The relationship between Cal and Layla was perfectly written. This was another pretty character driven story, but I wasn’t bored for a single second. I felt all the feels. It was sad, it was happy, it was hot. It was everything a good story wrapped in a neat little bow.

Cal is so protective and takes care of everyone as penance. However, Layla showed him everyone loved him and didn’t need to do penance. The banter between them was also really great. I laughed, I smiled. I am so ready to dive into the other books in the series. I need more. Plus the best thing, no third act break up. It was fantastic. I’ve always loved the fake dating trope and I think this book completely did it justice. ❤️

I loved this!! layla and Callum were so amazing, and the town they were in is honestly one of the best small towns I have ever read. they were charming, quirky, and had so much love to give.

Layla Mousavi is a badass Persian flight nurse (which is an insanely cool career that I did not know existed), while Callum is a calloused and "grumpy" cop who would sacrifice everything to make sure that his town and his people were safe and happy.
set in the small town of Falls Creek, North Carolina, you would think in a town so small there are more cows than people, and things would be pretty calm. you would be wrong. the "creekers," as they're called, get up to all kinds of crazy shenanigans.
like, for example, the date auctioning. callum needs to get out of this IMMEDIATELY, because trying to chase away the "crazy" Brandie Jean who is "obsessed" with him (side note, but Brandie Jean was the hero I did not know I needed and throughout the series became one of my favorite characters. we love subverting stereotypes.) meanwhile, Layla is new in town and needs a place to stay. cue fake engagement.

callum had some serious commitment issues. he wholeheartedly believed he was not worth loving and would not be good in a relationship. layla had a "no-cop" rule when it came to dating after falling headfirst for one who didn't want her.
their love defied all odds and went against everything they stood for.
and I ABSOLUTELY ATE IT UP.

callum LEARNED FARSI FOR HER, he accommodated her, listened to her, and carried her up the stairs every day when she fell asleep on the couch after an exhausting 24-hour shift. he even learned Persian courting traditions under the guise of appealing to her immigrant parents.

the characters in this book were so charming and I love this little town. Maggie Gates is a seriously talented author and has quickly become one of my favorites.

quotes:

"If I had seen you, I would have remembered you. Someone doesn't see a shooting star and forget what it looked like."

"'Fadat besham, asal.' Three words paralyzed me. I am willing to sacrifice myself for you, honey. It wasn't that literal, though. Some sayings in Farsi tended to be exaggerated. But the real meaning cut me to the quick. I care about you. You're important to me. I would put myself in harm's way for you."

"Carrying her up the stairs had started as an act of penance for begging for her to get on board with such a ridiculous favor. But after almost two months of carrying her up the stairs in the morning, it seemed almost sacred. A ritual of service that I was content to do simply because I wanted her to know I cared for her."

"Every time I look at you. I see the universe. The stars in your eyes. Lightning in your laugh. Sunsets when you blush. The moon in your smile."

"How did you get so perfect? Every part of you is flawless."
"I'm not perfect. I just like the way my broken pieces fit with yours."

"I want to make your tea, and I want to see you fill our home with tacky mugs. I want to see all your crafting stuff all over the kitchen table. I want my uniform covered in glitter from time to time. I want to find you asleep on the couch every time you come home. Then I want to carry you up the stairs until I'm gray and old and my body won't let me do it anymore. I want to be your home. I want to be the place where you know it's safe to fall apart."

This was my first Maggie book, and I loved it. The funny banter, the small town of crazy characters, and the relationship between Layla and Cal. I picked this up as a Rec from a friend who said it was fake dating and her fav author. So glad I did, it was a ride, now I’ll have to read more by this author!

„How did you get so perfect? Every part of you is flawless.”
She shook her head. „I’m not perfect. I just like the way my broken pieces fit with yours.”

4.25 🌟 this was SUCH a nice surprise. i’m literally so excited i liked it this much, because i really had no expectations — i was just bored and this turned out to be great. 😁

callum’s sense of duty and the overwhelming gratitude he walked around with was just so much. this man was also just SO INTENSE i feel like.
the research that went into the flight nurse profession was great. i love when authors spend time on researching things instead of just making things up.
the writing was good, i’ve read it so fast too. 😭
the humor in this one was also great.

„Wrote the Wi-Fi password for you.”
I unfolded it and bit back a laugh. In near-chicken scratch, he had scrawled, Network: FBI Surveillance Van. Password: LeaveMeAlone1.
„Most of the neighbors aren’t tech-savvy enough to know that they can change their network name to be whatever they want.” He chuckled. „Keeps the street pretty quiet.”

the dialogue felt natural. AND also i feel like callum is just that guy who knows what to say in any situation.

„I love you, not because of anything that you’ve done for me, but because you are worthy of it regardless. You don’t realize it, but you have the greatest capacity to love that I’ve ever seen. You’re calm and patient. You serve sacrificially. It’s beautiful, and it’s a damn shame that all this time, you look at it as a penalty. As a means to some eternal restitution. And I think you love me, too. I feel it in my bones.”

so good yall. like damn. such a solid one, literally can’t think of any complaints for now.

Super sweet!

I couldn't put it down once I started it! Maggie is becoming one of my favorite authors.

“I’m not perfect. I just like the way my broken pieces fit with yours.”

Callum and Layla were so adorable together! Together, they created a pack to fake date each other for their own reason.

Falls Creek is a hilarious small town. It took no time once the rumor mill got started for everyone in town to know they were fake dating! 😅

“Every time I look at you. I see the universe. The stars in your eyes. Lightning in your laugh. Sunsets when you blush. The moon in your smile.”
