Here, every day is an event; every commitment may not really be a commitment; every promotion may not be a career ascent and every salary hike may not mean more money in your bank account. Lalaji's strategies are not based on the size of his business, its market share or the competition but often on the whims and guidance of sycophants, advisors and friends. For a 'good' employee, working in a Lala company is akin to swimming in crocodile infested waters-tread cautiously or become the next casualty. Drawing on his intimate study of several large and small family businesses, Rajiv Gupta provides a hilarious, no-holds-barred account of how things work in Indian family businesses. The author's tone of writing is one of the reasons I highly recommend this book to you.

A few days back I was watching a video on Facebook, where an entrepreneur asked a coach, what if he set a contract with the young (so-called Gen Z) in order to retain them in the company since genZ is known for switching up the jobs and retaining them is the biggest problem of MNCs nowadays. So the answer of the coach was so apt, he said GenZ is never going to work for you or under a contract. The baby-boomers (so-called our grand-parents) they worked for the basic need (Roti, Kapda and Makan) then comes Gen X (our fathers and uncles) by that time we were out of the financial constraints and they did their best to move up the ladder so they made sure to fulfil safety and self-esteem (living in a great home, well recognized in the society etc) in short maintaining a standard of living & now Gen X ( me and maybe you) our needs are way beyond than the basic need, we are not brought up in the financial constraints and our concerns are not to maintain the standard of living, that is already been fulfilled by our parents now we are looking for a quality of life...

Lala and the company where the position will inherit by the member of the house (probably a son who will take the legacy further) and all the major decisions regarding the company and its finances are taken majorly by the Lala Ji himself or the Bauji (Lalaji's father) or if you have to add an additional person to this equation then Muneem Ji (the accountant) Surviving a company like this is hard, where major decisions are taken by 1 or 2 members of the house. Often an employee will find himself in some unwanted situation but this is when this book comes to the rescue, author have penned down example along with the wisdom of a nugget for an employee to take.

If you are surviving at a Lala company run to your nearest bookstore now...

Do you enjoy reading corporate satires? If yes, then here's a witty and funny corporate satire with lots of wisdom nuggets that will surely keep you entertained and engrossed till the end. ☺️

Lala companies are basically small businesses that a family runs. It was refreshing to read a book based on small businesses. I loved the illustrations! They summarized some of the key scenarios and discussions very effectively! ☺️

The author has dissected the very hierarchy in these businesses and explained the role, power, and decision-making process of each family member in these businesses. Starting from the first generation patriarch to the third generation entitled grandkids, this book has covered them all. I found it to be hilarious and at times a bit exaggerated. But the exaggeration added to the entertainment quotient.

The author has mentioned a number of cases and scenarios that are very common in most family businesses and in the form of 'wisdom nuggets' at the end of every case has discussed the thought process of the Lala Ji.

The key advice for surviving a Lala company is mentioned only towards the end, in the Epilogue.

The face and working of family businesses have evolved a lot since the late 1970s when the term 'Lala Company' first gained prominence. Today we have many women-owned family businesses and many businesses have established systems to ensure professionalism even at the very ground level. Yet many employees and even family members face the same dilemmas and conflicts as were faced in businesses years ago. With the help of a hilarious sketch, this book has provided a number of resolutions to the common conflicts observed in such businesses. I enjoyed reading it and found it to be quite entertaining!

Just finished reading the Lala company. The book offers a comprehensive insight to How the family owned business functions and the lala here represents the owner of the company who works as per his whims and fancies. The author Rajiv Gupta has provided some eye opening insights about the Lala companies with some really amazing case studies followed by the wisdom nuggets. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting the professionals chapter as I had a bitter sweet experience of working with lala company for 2 years, & I couldn't agree more with the examples and learning in this chapter.

Have you ever known someone who joined their family business or started a business, and you designated them as Lala because of their behaviour? Well, some characteristics are interpreted as that of a Lala, specifically, a huge belly. P.S.- There is no intent of body shaming.

The Good Indian Employee's Guide To Surviving A Lala Company is a book that summarises the struggles of the employees who are a part of the company supervised by a Lala. The malpractices of Lala, how they justify them, and why it becomes necessary sometimes- have been shared in this book. Anyway, the majority focus is on the malpractices of Lala, how that disrupts the growth aspects of the company, and what an employee can do to survive in such situations.

The book carries an informal tone and comprises case studies that share many instances which may assist anyone aiming to expand their business, even those working as distributors of various so-called brands, to familiarise themselves with the tariffs of efficient work culture. Besides that, it discusses the red flags of the owner for the workforce. The employees are not your servants but the teammates who will take your business to heights when treated well. Yes, there are some exceptions, and you may learn some tips on spotting and tackling them. The various instances shared may assist in predicting the workforce future in such a company and help them plan their decisions and alternatives accordingly. In some cases, the aftermath of the company has been deliberated under the wisdom nuggets section of every case study or chapter.

Having interacted with Lala companies and shrewd employees before let me relate more to the content. I wish this book got published years ago when I went into an expansion drive of my family business. I would have learnt about the malpractices of the employees and ways to challenge those shrewd salesmen. In a nutshell, this book is not limited to the survival of employees but allows the owner to redeem their growth in the market.

I have never had a lala job but I have read bytes and stories and tweets on the internet. The book gave me a funny and deeper insight into the lala's world and the ways people cab be toxic while they corpspeak .

The lala land has an amazing cast of characters covering the organization from Lalaji, Muneemji to the silly old professional and their interactions portrayed with fun caricatures.

It's a quick read and feels light hearted, but discusses a very deep rooted toxic culture among India's businesses and families. Which was delivered well, though I felt things could have been a little shorter at a few places.

💼 Welcome to Lala Land 💼

Here, a Lala is a business owner who inherits a family business from his or her earlier generation(s). At Lala, every day is an event, and every promotion is not a career advancement. Or every salary hike may not even be more money in your bank account. It’s that traditional company where KRAs are sharply defined and top management refuses to listen to employees' opinions.

So, how do you survive in this Lala company? A newbie fresher wouldn’t know the day-in-day-out dynamics of the substantial family-run Lala business, and the ones who work there are clueless by the sheer confusion of the daily hustle and bustle. The author also describes that for a ‘good’ employee, working in a Lala company is similar to "swimming in crocodile-infested waters". So, the question is how you will survive at Lala’s as a successful employee.

Wait! The book answers that. Hilariously. Sarcastically. And convincingly. ✨

Rajiv Gupta's "The Good Indian Employee’s Guide to Surviving a Lala Company" offers readers a hilarious and no-holds-barred account of the inner workings of Indian family businesses. With wit and insight, Gupta takes us on a journey through the whimsical and unpredictable world of Lala companies. These include not only family-run Indian businesses but also some renowned MNCs.

One of the book's major strengths is its ability to blend humor with astute observations about Indian family businesses. Gupta's writing style is engaging and witty, evoking laughter while also shedding light on the sometimes absurd and unpredictable nature of these enterprises. The book offers a nuanced understanding of the delicate balance between loyalty, ambition, and self-preservation that employees must maintain in these unique work environments.

For employees, this book is a guide while it’s a mirror for the employers who tend to incline toward such a ‘Lala Land’ company culture. Through engaging illustrations and wisdom nuggets after each Lala company incident/hiccup, whether it’s among their family members, owners, management, or senior employees, the author provides a piece of insightful knowledge and everyday survival tips to survive at Lala companies. The other characters (employees) at Lala company such as an accountant, the Chamcha, the Lala family, etc. are portrayed convincingly, too.

I absolutely love the premise. It’s a great satirical yet thought-provoking take on the culture some "outstanding" companies across the world work in and provides a survival guide for employees for navigating the tricky terrain of Lala Land.

📖"Every promotion may not be a career ascent and every salary hike may not mean more money in your bank account"

📖In the realm of family-run businesses, certain terms have become ingrained in our vocabulary. We often come across expressions like "Lalaji," "Muneem Ji," and "Chamcha," each carrying its significance. While these terms may vary in their cultural interpretations, they have all contributed to the tapestry of language associated with family-run businesses.

📖"LALA COMPANY" is a remarkable book that provides profound insights into the complex world of family-run businesses, where structure frequently gives way to chaos. It sheds light on the difficulties faced by highly qualified individuals who are burdened by the weight of unanticipated expectations. The book delves into the complexities of navigating a business environment in which personal relationships, rather than professional merit, influence decisions.

📖The book explores the struggles, frustrations, and triumphs of those who strive to bring order and efficiency to businesses entwined in familial dynamics. The author also offers useful insights into the consequences of such internal politics, which can stymie progress, disrupt decision-making processes, and create a hostile work environment.

📖With its unique blend of humor and wit, "LALA COMPANY" cleverly delivers a message not only to those entrenched in family-run businesses but also to individuals outside of this dynamic. The book utilizes its comedic tone to shed light on the quirks and irregularities that often accompany such enterprises.

I wish i had this book or read this book 5-10 years.

I would have skipped working at a lot of LALA startups.

The author wrote about LALA Companies, but he hasn't dealt with the unique wish of some of these LALAs to become startup founders.

The startup passion or bug often finds the fancy of these LALAs, but they neither have the skills nor the required aptitude to learn and find success in a startup.

I have seen many startups go down the drain , due to the way the are run i.e. like LALA companies, one person startups are the most dangerous kinds of startups.

The book is amusing as it is informational.
The use cases and anecdotes do the concept justice and kept me interested from the first page to the last.

This is one of the books that put the truth in its papers and capture the viciousness of Indian Business. This is a must read for anyone getting into a LALA company.

A very funny but accurate depiction on what to expect when you are working in an India promoter led (or better known as Lala) company. I can vouch for quite a few of the situations called out in the book based on my interactions with near and dear ones. I would say this to be a Bible for anyone who is considering jumping over to a lala company for want of better compensation, role, growth etc...

Can't give some imaginary case studies and get away with it..

All the points can be summarised in the chapter title itself. Use live scenarios and just keep go on blaming the Lala companies.

Completed 44%, felt why wasted my time even for this much..
