Rate this book
Guarding his nation’s last hope, a teen must escape enemy lands.

While Anargen, Caeserus, and Bertinand are held captive in Stormridge, the war to restore Ecthelowall’s Commonwealth has been waged for months. Their friend Terrillian is on its frontline and hopes are high.

For Barons Fenwrest and Sornfold the fight is too close to their children, whose union represents the only viable challenge to the Monarchists claim to Ecthelowall’s ancient throne. Enter Thomas Fenwrest, an orphan and page to Sir Hurstwell, who is captain of Baron Fenwrest’s guard. The pair must escort the teens to Castle Yerst expecting boredom to be their only danger. Everything quickly spirals out of control when the Monarchists somehow deliver a devastating blow to the Restoration army and Thomas and Sir Hurstwell face the increasingly difficult task of keeping their charges alive. Ancient sorcery and bitter grudges combine to ensnare them. As desperation sets in for the Restoration and Thomas, to where will they turn for hope?

I'm pretty sure the world-building gets better with each book in this series. Which is saying something considering how amazing it was when he started. Seeing different people in different lands, learning myths and legends, seeing some come to life, all while wondering how the good guys are going to get out of this war ... wow. This one was so good. Can't wait to read the next.

Desperation is the fourth book/novella in Brett Armstrong’s Quest of Fire fantasy series. They are frame tales - set in two different time periods yet related to each other. I really appreciate the way Armstrong draws readers to the High King. Every one so far has had characters who are knights in the service of the High King - working to bring light to the dark world in which they live.
The story did not seem to be a direct continuation of the previous books but there is continuity in the storyline. Characters and names from previous books appearing as well as new characters being introduced.
Thomas, the disgraced nephew of a Baron, is responsible for the safe passage of his cousin and the two daughters of another Baron. He fights off evil forces to keep them safe, in the process he becomes a knight of the High King. Armstrong included some surprises in the plot that I didn’t see coming - that is always enjoyable.
About the only criticism I have is that the summary of the previous books was found in the back and since I was reading an eBook I didn’t know they were there until I finished. I would have liked the summaries at the start in order to refresh my memory of what had happened previously.
Desperation and the other books in the Quest of Fire series would be appropriate additions to a k-12 Christian school library. Fantasy lovers in middle school and up will enjoy the books.
I received a complimentary copy of Desperation. This is my honest review.

I had the pleasure of Brett Armstrong writing a Guest Post for my blog when his last book Shadows At Nightfall came out. So I was ecstatic to read his new book Quest of Fire: Desperation.

The world building Brett Armstrong has done in this series is fantastic and I love the included maps so I can get a better feel of everything in my mind.

The characters were developed very well and I loved how Brett Armstrong showed you the characters rather than telling you about them. It was easy to get to know them, and be enchanted with their journey. I will say that I did have a bit more trouble connecting to the characters than in the previous book. However, I still very much enjoyed them.

The wonderfully interwoven themes of faith and strength made this book a great addition to my library!

I can’t wait to see what Brett Armstrong writes next. 4 Stars for Quest of Fire: Desperation.

One thing I have learned about the author’s style of writing is that you must pay careful attention to the details. He creates a world where characters are bigger than life and their journey is filled with danger, secrets and lessons that I didn’t expect. I have come to respect his style and find myself enjoying his books more than I thought. It is important to keep an open mind when reading a genre you aren’t geared toward. As I read more fantasy books I can see how the authors create a place that I want to escape to. Now let me give you a few things I liked about this story.

The setting is very easy to visualize right from the beginning. I could already tell that Thomas and Mia would be two characters to keep my eyes on. Poor Thomas is trying to keep Mia safe, but she seems to question every move he makes. Mia is already doubting that anyone survived the attack including her father. If only Mia would listen to Thomas and have a little faith. Perhaps there are survivors but Mia is convinced that everyone has perished. I had to stop and think about her attitude a bit. I think I fall into the trap of thinking the worse at times just like Mia. Where is my faith? Looks like I need to work on that more.

There are battles galore in the story that at times were a bit too descriptive for me. I understand that the author wanted readers to know how dangerous the quest was. Saving Mia’s sister Delia does take a toll on Thomas and Terrillian. Will they have the strength to get everyone to safety? There is a bit of sorcery in the book that leads to talk of spells and danger.

The author dives deep into the world he has created and gives readers an adrenaline rush as the quest becomes more urgent with every move made. I began to wonder who could be trusted and if there was going to be any time for the characters to catch their breath. I didn’t see the oh my moments coming and believe me you will be in for a shock. Do I dare say what happens? I can’t ruin it for everyone but let’s just say not everything or everyone is as they seem.

Greed, jealousy and power are indeed alive in this epic adventure. The author once again shines in his genre with great imagination and vivid displays of character development. I loved the emotional moments between Thomas and Mia. When Thomas is trying to console Mia he tells her, “You learn to live through the hurt. All I know is death isn’t the answer to stop the pain.” Evil lurks among the pages in this story, but there is always hope.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Quest of Fire: Desperation
Quest of Fire #4
By Brett Armstrong

War has come to Ecthelowall, and the hopes that the Commonwealth can be restored are about to be dealt another severe blow. Thomas Fenwrest's life was changed forever following his parents' deaths. Taken in by his uncle, Baron Fenwrest, Thomas is being mentored by Sir Hurstwell when they are tasked with moving the heirs to the ancient throne of Ecthelowall to safety. But the danger is much closer than they realized, and soon they are in a fight for their lives.

This book has a high level of drama as treachery, and unexpected aid comes into play. This is the fourth book in the series, and it is a worthy addition to the series. I'm looking forward to seeing how exactly everything comes together. The various threads are heading seemingly toward a certain path, but challenges and obstacles keep getting in the way, diverting our heroes and separating them at times. This time we only have quick glimpses of what is taking place for the old storyteller and Aria, as Jason's fate is not yet known.

I have read all the books in this series, and let me just say you have to read these in order! This book is excellent reading, and the Quest of Fire series is perfect for fans of The Chronicles of Narnia or The Lord of the Rings. I would say it is in between them in reading difficulty. But I would say middle-grade readers and older will love these books. And, like me, if you delve into this world, you will be wondering what will happen next. I highly recommend this book and series and feel that it will appeal to home-schoolers.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

I absolutely loved this little book! I have enjoyed this series so much; it is honestly one of the best I have ever read. I do think you should at least read the first book in the series before you read this one but you might fully benefit by reading the two full-length novels before this one. I loved getting to know new characters and I am very excited to see if they are included in the next book. I thought the pacing was perfect for a novella. It kept my attention the whole time I was reading. The characters were so endearing that I was immediately invested in them and I wanted to see them be victorious. Thomas and Mia were such interesting characters and I thought their interactions were very entertaining with their banter. The action drives the plot forward without becoming routine or boring. I needed to see if the characters were going to be okay. I was so good!
The faith element of this series has been one of my favorite parts throughout all the books and this one is not different. I enjoyed how the author navigated the struggles and zeal that new believers may experience. I felt that it was portrayed very realistically and can be very inspiring for, not only readers new to their faith, but also those who have been saved for many years. The inclusion of a more mature believer helping a newly regenerated person was also amazing to see portrayed in a book. The author also tackles real-life struggles and how God can help a person to realize they are more than their circumstances and how He can use anybody in His sovereignty. Every time I read a book in this series or even reread one of them, I am always struck by how the author has managed to bring the characters’ faith into the story seamlessly to drive the characters’ decisions. Honestly, I can’t say enough good things about this book and series. It is amazing and I will definitely recommend reading it!
WARNING: This book does have actions scenes but they are not glorified or overwhelming. The violence is not reveled in by the main characters and some feel the heaviness of having to use it. There is also some magic but I hope that does not discourage parents from letting their teens read this book. Magic is portrayed as evil and it is never shown in a good light. It is shown to be sinful and against God’s will for His people. There is also some talk of suicide but it is passing and not a main focal point in the book. I understand people need to abide by their conscience, which is why I listed these. I do not think they detract from the story and I hope you will give this book and the whole series a read. They are amazing and the faith element is so strong that I think it will get older children, teen, and even adults thinking and focusing more on their faith,

While I’ve not read all of the books in this series yet, I have read a few. From the first one, I’ve enjoyed the author’s way of telling a story, his voice as a storyteller. He’s created a complete world and characters with varied histories and personalities. Desperation is no different in the quality and style of writing, and I love those things about it.

From the first chapter, Desperation had my attention. The characters immediately give you a sense of who they are. And while they experience growth throughout the story, it is these first glimpses that let you know who they’ve been. Then, the story invites you to join them not only in their quest against evil but also on the path to who they are becoming. Personal and spiritual growth, mentorship, and choosing friends wisely are ideas that allow the world of Desperation to have meaning in our world.

And while we may not face epic battles against unthinkable monsters, we do fight against evil. The results of that evil can be just as ugly and devastating as the monsters the author has created. It’s wonderful to have well-written, interest grabbing (and keeping) stories of adventure to remind us that the monsters can be fought, and they can be defeated. I’d say the next generation needs these epic stories of heroism and fighting for the Light, but that wouldn’t be the complete truth. Really, we all need these stories, and Brett Armstrong has once again delivered an engaging story that does exactly that. I give Desperation five stars.

I received an ARC of this book through Celebrate Lit. The reviews and opinions are my own and freely given.

So, this story took a bit of getting into like the previous one. I think it would've been a good idea for me to read the ending of book 3 before starting book 4 to get an idea of what I was walking into with this next story. Unlike the previous book, this one doesn't switch between time periods until the epilogue. I was a bit disappointed (just a personal note) that we didn't get a "new era" time period. lol

We get to know Thomas, a teen who no longer has the hope of ascending the throne, but his simpering cousin is next in line. As they try to escort Delia and Mia to safety everything goes awry. If you like non-stop action that involves swords and armor, this story is definitely for you.

As Mia and Thomas work out their personal differences, they start to work very well together. Terrillian, from the previous story shows up on the scene and really does a great job of leading them.

The faith element throughout this story is fantastic! I love that when the characters rely on the High King we see His power! It reminds the reader over and over that choosing to walk in the light and with the Light is the best choice, but it IS a choice. I think for young adults who might be reading this story will be bolstered in their faith!

I gave it a 4 star, but more of a 3.5 for me.

*I received this book for review. This is my personal opinion.

Quest of Fire; Desperation by Brett Armstrong is a Christian Epic Fantasy. As the fourth book in the Quest of Fire series, this book explores Thomas Fenwrest, an orphan and page to Sir Hurstwell, who is captain of Baron Fenwrest’s guard. Throughout the pages of this book, he comes to discover what truly matters to him.

For Barons Fenwrest and Sornfold, the fight comes too close to their children, whose union represents the only viable challenge to the Monarchists’ claim to Ecthelowall’s ancient throne. I must say I liked some characters more than others to start with in this book, but I continued to develop an appreciation for them as the book progressed. Thomas initially thinks boredom will be the only issue on their journey, but they quickly find themselves caught up in more.l

The author does an excellent job of developing these characters as well as the storyline. While you probably could read this book on its own, I definitely recommend reading the books in order.

So if you enjoy Christian Epic Fantasies, check out Quest of Fire; Desperation, and the rest of the books in the Quest of Fire series by Brett Armstrong for yourself.

I didn’t realize that this was book four in the Quest for Fire series. The story kicks off in high gear as they get ready for battle. What fuels the flames of these battles is greed, jealousy, and power, this is indeed a grand adventure.

This novel contains numerous disputes, some of which at times felt excessively detailed. The novel contains some sorcery, which sparks discussions about spells and danger. The reader quickly realizes that nothing is as it seems.

Since I don't read many fantasy books, and this one is book four in a series, I felt a bit disconnected from the story. I struggled to identify with the characters. The battle scenes somewhat reminded of Tolken Lord of the Ring stories.

I am not one who normally reads Christian Fantasy books, although I did read Book 3 in this series. Desperation is Book 4 in the Quest of Fire series. I wanted to see how the series advances and therefore I read Book 4 recently.

I have to say that I was able to understand the storyline a little easier than I did in Book 3. Thomas, Mia, and Delia are the main characters in this book. I really like how Thomas focused on getting Mia and Delia to safety. Thomas and Mia don't get along at first and it was so encouraging to see them work through everything and be able to work together to get to safety. I do like how Author Brett Armstrong always creates characters who are developed and strong characters. The Faith element in this book is strong and encouraging. I cannot say that I am liking Christian Fantasy, but this particular book has me wanting to give the genre more of a chance. I think those who enjoy Christian Fantasy would enjoy this book greatly. Wonderful Book!

I have read book three, and now book four, and I really want to go back and read the others. I almost didn't read the ending, because I couldn't stand to without reading the whole series. The author has built an amazing world, full of details, action and suspense.

Greed, envy, and power struggles are themes in this story. Thomas and Mia are strong characters and they are easy to get attached to as is the drama and struggles going on with this place while they fight for the Light. I can highly recommend this book and this series. I have become a fan of this author and hope to read a lot more of this series. This story is great for all ages, but especially pre-teens and teens should be easily hooked on reading this, and be thrilled by the hope and light that shines throughout the story.

Thank you to Celebrate Lit for this digital copy of this book. This review is my own and contains what I thought about this book.

I am stuck in the middle on this book.

I enjoy fantasy and speculative fiction; I actually started out writing fantasy and finalled in some contests but, alas, haven't published in that arena yet. All to say that I do enjoy it.

However, I'm not sure about this one. I spent a good bit of time confused as to who the leaders were of the good guys vs. the bad guys. We only get to know the one character, Thomas, well, and all others seem more shadow figures.

There are good fight scenes and good wins in the end, but I'm still not sure.

The bonus chapter made no sense to me whatsoever...sorry.

So, overall, I'm not sure I recommend this book--perhaps I needed to start at the beginning, but I still don't find the depth in the characters I prefer.

Quest of Fire: Desperation is written by Brett Armstrong. This is a Christian Fantasy book - which is not my go to genre, but I found myself drawn in within the first few pages. This is book four in the Quest of Fire series. I have read the whole series, and would recommend reading the books in order. The book is set in two different time periods, but the story intertwines with the other.

There are lots of battle scenes to keep you engaged. Then there is Tom and Mia. Tom tries so hard to keep Mia safe - but Mia has been through a lot and is questioning every move that is made. I liked that the author wrote in the inner struggle here - Mia thinks that all she knows are gone - and she has lost her will.
There is plenty of battles, greed and jealousy in this book. In the whole series this may be my favorite one. Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

Quest of Fire: Desperation continues Brett Armstrong’s fascinating series. I have enjoyed the previous books from this series. In my opinion, it would be best to read the books in order to grasp a better understanding as to what is going on. I believe this book is my favorite of the series. It was great to travel to another world. The story is full of adventure, action and drama. I thought it was great to take this journey with the characters.
I am giving Quest of Fire: Desperation five stars. I recommend it for readers who are fans of clean fantasy and science fiction. I would be interested in reading more by Brett Armstrong, hoping there will be more to come for Quest of Fire.

I thought this was a good YA fantasy. This was the first book by this author I have read, so although this book is number 4 in the series I still could follow what was happening and enjoyed the story. I think it would be helpful to have read the other books first just so I had more background of what had happened but the story is good on its own. I liked that the main characters were teenagers who were trying to figure out what side of the war to be on and how to fight for what they believed. I also liked the Christian elements of there being a High King over all things and how his light can overcome the darkness that is in the world. I enjoyed this book and I would like to see what happens to the characters going forward.

I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors.  A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.

I don't know, for sure, but somehow this book felt easier to read and follow than Shadows At Nightfall. I don't know if it's because I am now familiar with the world and characters (though I didn't remember most of them) or if it was that this book really only follows one character in one timeline.

Thomas started the book being a bit whiny, but over the course of the story we learn his background and he grows.
Mia was fine, I don't really have thoughts about her, but I'd like to see more of her and see her grow.
George? I've questions. They can be boiled down to "How old is he? Can I have more of his backstory?"
I received a copy of this book so I could read it and share my most honest opinion.

This is book 4 of the series.

It was easier to understand,
but still somewhat confusing to me.
So many nobles, factions, politics etc.!!!

Also, it also still has a tad too many fight scenes,
with some of them being a bit more graphic
than I want to read.

Nevertheless, I like this the best so far.
The main characters
were more interesting,
especially the relationship between Thomas and Mia.

There are some Christian attributes, and talk of THE High King, and how God strengthens
His believers etc.
I just wish there was a great deal more of that,
with scriptures etc.

Nevertheless, it is well written.
Again, it does have a Christian theme running throughout...
but I just wish it were even more clearly and boldly stated.

I enjoyed the main characters and their interactions. There was also an unexpected twist and a character who had hidden motives -- loved that. The action was well written. I think if I had read the first three books in the series, I would have loved this even more. I would have had more invested in the characters and the overall war of good vs. evil as portrayed in this series. The almost constant action is not my preferred fiction, but I still enjoyed it. I am sure my husband and teen daughter would love this book because that's the genre they usually choose. This book was provided to me by Celebrate Lit, but these are my own thoughts and opinions.

This is a tale of evil verses evil. I was able to follow this story much better than I thought I would be able to because fantasy is a genre that I’m not fond of. I strongly recommend reading the other books in the series first. This book was written so well that it was easy to imagine the scenery as I was reading.
