I came to them on a whim, hoping they could shield me. August, Cass, and Nico. The agreement they made means they’ll protect me, but they don’t have to like it… or me. As a pain-eater, it sucks that I can’t do anything to ease my own pain at being stuck with three guys who hate my guts. Somehow, I wound up covered in their brother’s blood with him missing, presumed dead. The geas on my tongue means I can’t reveal the truth. The fog in my head means I’m not sure what the truth is. After a deathbed confession turns out to be a little premature, I find myself in a whole heap more trouble. Now, I’ve got a loan shark on my back wanting to use my special skill set, plus my three alpha hole guys who need my help to find their brother. They need me. I need them. Should be easy to work together, right? Wrong.
Shadow Chaser is part one of three of a paranormal romance reverse harem series, meaning that at the end our heroine will end up with a happy ever after with more than one of our guys. It’s a slow burn featuring enemies to lovers, a sweetheart berserker, alpha-hole heroes and a part-demon, pain-eating, gloriously glib heroine. Also featuring sexually explicit scenes and bad language.
Essie Suter is a writer of paranormal and contemporary fantasy romance. She's a big fan of slow burns, enemies to lovers and forced proximity moments, whether the heroes are cinnamon rolls or alpha holes, the happily ever after is guaranteed!
Essie is a firm believer in the certainty of romance in uncertain times and finds fellow romance readers to be the best kind of people. She lives in the UK. When not ignoring the real-world swooning over love stories, she spends a lot of time cooking, wandering in the countryside, and smiling at other people's dogs.
3.75 Hmmm 🤔, First off, I really enjoyed this book even if the guys were complete dicks that did not deserve a second chance (well most of them).
Something was off though. It's like every peak ended without that sense of satisfaction. For example, there is a point that one of the guys basically forces her to do something, even though there was a huge possibility of death. Instead of this scene ending with her being mad or upset it was like "welp, I guess that happened, you're a dick" (I might have taken some creative liberties there) For f***'s sake he had to resuscitate her because she f***'n died. That deserves more than just calling him a dick... And I think it mentioned her being grateful that at least he brought her back to life!!! WTF???
It was more than just the character reactions though, this also plagued other action scenes as well.
Will I read the next one? 🤦 Most likely.

I will admit I struggled with the pacing on this one. It’s written okay and the story flows somewhat, but it just moved so slow. You never could get a grasp on the characters with the exception of the “hate” they felt for the FMC and then boom it was all “I think I really like her” after 3 years or whatever of barely noticing her. The backstory on the Supers is in dire need of more explanation. I just couldn’t get myself to care about what was going on.

I didn't expect much from this book. I saw it on a "similar to..." list and figured I'd give it a shot. This is an unfamiliar author for me, I've never read any of her work and just learning that she's a new author. Not sure if this is her first book or not but...
You done good!
Anyways. Manon is a paineater/healer who, thanks to her lovely father, ends up in a pickle of a situation. Stuff happens, her circumstances get a little more harried and she gambles on the big guy she's been kinda sorta hangin' with at the library to help her out. He (August) decides to help her, takes her back to his Alpha team (Cass, Gabe, & Nico) and they bind her to them so they can protect her and in return she provides her abilities for when they need it. HOWEVER, within minutes of their agreement thing, stuff goes down and one of the guys goes missing. Of course, the other 3 guys blame Manon and thus beings her three years of mistreatment by the guys.
In this book we see them come to the realization that maybe, just maybe, what Manon is telling them regarding Gabe is true and they begin to question their treatment of her. Also, she's trying to evade the person who assumed her life debt because she knows that she won't get lucky a second time around and whatever this guys wants, it won't be good. Meanwhile, they are trying to find Gabe.
A lot going on in this book and it's good.
I liked the characters. I really liked Manon. She's not had it easy, but she always figures it out. She's funny with her quick remarks and sarcasm. I liked that even though the guys treat her like 💩and internally it bothers her quite a bit, outwardly she doesn't let it show. She won't let them see just how much they get to her. I also liked how as the story progresses, along with the guys, we get a better insight into what makes Manon tick. She's got layers.
The guys. It's interesting. I can see the appeal, but based on how they treated her, I'm slightly annoyed with most of them. Not August. Loved him. He was great. Nico got a little better there towards the end, so there's that. Cass.. ugh. The dummy. Gabe. Not a huge fan of him, but I can see how he could become a favorite. And thats all I'll say about that.
My only issue with this book is I wish we'd gotten a little more info into what the guys are. We know that Nico is, like Manon, a half demon. We know the most about August and his berserker status. However, we only get little bits of what exactly Cass (and by extension, Gabe) is. We have a general idea of what they can do, but thats about it. Then again, this is only the first book of the series, so maybe we'll get more about that as the series progresses. Likely.
Overall, this book was great. Like I said, I really had low expectations going into this. I initially only downloaded the sample thinking I'd move on to the next book rather quickly, but within a chapter I was hooked and had it downloaded. I was thoroughly entertained, some parts had me chuckling, some parts had me almost sad, and other times I was annoyed with the characters (not in a bad way, just in a general sense of them being idiots).
Definitely recommend to anyone who likes a slow burn RH with an actual story and a strong heroine.
This book has a really interesting concept. I wish there would have been some more expansion and world building. I would’ve liked to have more background on the whole underworld thing. It just felt like you were just shoved in to the story and it was a bit sudden. There were also a few distracting editing errors, like the word “adduct” when it should have been “abduct”.

Shadow Chaser is the first book by Essie Suter I have read. I received an ARC of this via Booksirens.
This is the first of three books in the Stoneraven Alpha series, which is a reverse harem, paranormal romance.
Our heroine, Manon, is a healer and pain-eater and lives in a city full of all types of supernaturals such as vampires, wraiths and ghouls. Ever since an attempt at building an underground station went wrong and a portal was opened that allowed demons and other supernaturals through.
When she was younger, her father used Manon as a stake when gambling and lost, leaving her owing a life debt to a crime lord, Kitos.
She goes to August, Nico, Cass & Gabe to ask for protection from Kitos in exchange for healing them and taking away their pain. They agree and perform a protection binding spell. Five minutes later, Gabe, Cass's twin brother is missing and Manon is covered in his blood with a gaes preventing her from telling them what happened and they blame her for his disappearance.
Three years later and events happen that Manon remembers a little bit about what happened and they realise she was under a spell.
They start following leads for more information and its not long before attraction soon starts to grow between them all.
This has the potential to be a really good series, however the author needs to make sure that when there are two peoples versions of events when they are in the same place, they should match.
No spoilers here as it is all part of the synopsis of the book, but from Cass's flashback of the day his brother disappeared, at the end of it, I was like, why did you blame Manon??
In his flashback the four of them completed the protection binding with Manon. As soon as they have completed the binding Gabe leaves the room and Manon goes to the bathroom. A few minutes later Gabe heads out the door (but he never returns). He leaves, unharmed and in one piece after making a joke with Cass. Manon then comes back from the bathroom panicked, confused and not able to remember what happened in those few minutes she was gone. The synopsis of the book is that she is covered in Gabe's blood, so why is this not part of Cass's flashback of events?
In Manon's flashback, you do get the story about the events that happened between her and Gabe, when she went to the bathroom, and she is panicked, confused and covered in Gabe's blood when she re-enters the room where Cass, Nico and August were waiting for her so from her perspective you can understand why they blame her.
There is a cliffhanger ending, and I will continue with the series when book 2, Beast Tamer comes out.

This book was so good! I've been struggling to find paranormal RH books that are unique and manage to keep my attention for the entirety of the book. But this one really did! I found myself breezing through it and it was a quick and entertaining read.
The premise itself was really interesting, which is why I picked it up, but it also developed into a complex plot. While it was relatively quick to read, I felt like it was more than enough time to get to know most of the characters and also to both introduce and resolve some really interesting conflicts in the story. That said, keep in mind it ends on a cliffhanger!
August was by far my favorite character, but he was also the most developed. I would have liked to get to know Nico a little better, I felt like he was the least explored in this book. But I'm hoping the sequel focuses a bit more on him as well. This first book wasn't really a reverse harem, but we're working up to it! For now, my baby August has got this covered! This book has great banter and it's a bit of a slow-burn, so you get that delicious tension as well.
It was well-written, had a clear fully structured plot line, and I can tell the author has plans for the rest of the series. I genuinely can't wait to read it!

I struggled. Pacing was weird. We go from “I hate her guts” to “I want to make her mine” in what feels like 2 seconds flat. It’s so jarring. There’s not an expansive introduction to the world. We’re thrown into the middle of it, and although admittedly it’s not exactly necessary to have detailed descriptions, what that meant was I’m not invested.
This is a reverse harem, right, which means most likely the whole book(s) will revolve around the romantic relationships between the main characters. That’s why when we have these big jumps in the relationship it ruins the book. We have weeks go past where she’s spending time with one of them, growing fond and close to him, but it’s alluded to, not actually seen on page, so another instance where I’m not invested because you haven’t devoted time on page to it.
Ticked me off that she so quickly seemed to forgive and forget. These guys were honestly dick bags. Not Augustus, he was fine. But Nico can go shove a bag of smouldering coals down his throat and choke on it. He did not care if she was hurt while he pursued his needs.
I immediately downloaded this when I read the blurb and saw it had a pain eater and a berserker. Thankfully, I wasn’t disappointed in the story. The story starts a couple years after the events in the blurb. Manon has been working with Cass, August, and Nico after she got them to make a deal to protect her. Minutes after she made that deal. Cass’ brother disappeared and the guys have pretty much been jerks to her since. I really loved August - he is a big tedddy bear, but also the berserker. Nico is kind of a jerk, but he owns it. The guy I feel like needs to work for Manon is Cas. Especially after his behaviors towards the end. I was sucked in by the world Suter has created and can’t wait to see what happens next. The story does end with a bit of cliffy, so hopefully it’s not a long wait :)
Without a doubt one of the best books I've read lately. Not what I expected and was very pleased by that alone. I find a lot of books and films for that matter can be predictable.
This however had a new take on the half demon, half Supers they aren't humans. This is about Manon she's a pain-eater (exactly what it says it is) a healer of sorts. Who ends up bonded, and living and working for her own safety, to August a beserker,Nico a half demon with mind manipulating skills, and Cass he has the power of light.
They all blame Manon because the blame her for Gabes possible death ,who was Cass's twin brother who's was the power of dark, shadows…
I never put this book down. It was a slow burn, but never dull enemies to lovers story.
Warnings: #1) Paranormal creatures: demons, berserker, etc. #2) Don't be a prude: it's a bit steamy, but slowburning. Currently only MF. #3) Check your triggers: trauma from parent neglect; servitude; kidnapping. #4) Cliffhanger: Book 1 in a series. #5) 1st person POV; alternating chapters. #6) Enemies-to-lovers.
Suter creates these interesting characters that get you hooked from the get-go. The story is easy to follow, easy to read, but it is definitely not lacking anywhere.
And poor Manon...just one thing after another for her! She just can't catch a break, and it kind of leaves you wondering if perhaps she really is cursed in some other way.
You'll definitely enjoy this book...now, onto the next installment!
Thank you so much for the ARC! When I started Shadow Chaser I had no idea what exactly to expect of the story. I do love a good fantasy so I got into it open minded. The story is about Manon, a girl who is part demon and has the power to heal and take pain away from victims. She has a debt to pay and works cases with three guys with powers of their own, Cass, Nico and August, in exchange for protection. Even though the book started a bit slow, it was an entertaining story. The characters are still a bit of a mystery to me, I'm curious how they will develop further in the next book of the series.
Shadow Chaser is the first on this series. This book came up as a recommendation and I'm so happy that I picked it up. This world with supernatural/demons mixed in with humans was just what I was looking for. And I added a new author to my list.
Manon is a pain-eater, with a team who mostly ignore her. They think she knows something about the disappearance of one of their teammates. Of course she can't say anything. Not with a powerful spell making it impossible. And just when they start to soften a little, things get all kinds of complicated again.
This book ends on a cliffhanger and I'm grabbing the next book now!
This is a slow burn reverse harem paranormal story unlike any I've read before. I love the characters in this book and how Essie describes each one, especially the guys and their abilities and weaknesses. The dynamics of their work relationship and how they came to know each other shows that they fit together, belong together. The back and forth attitudes, indecision and banter are great. This is a great book and I can’t wait for Beast Tamer to come out.
I received a complimentary copy of Shadow Chaser by Essie Suter via Voracious Readers Only.
I picked this book up because it combined all my favorite romance tropes - paranormal, reverse harem, mafia-esq. And I loved the mystery around Gabe, the missing brother. And honestly I couldn't put it down, I started reading it while on vacation and finished within 12 hours of starting.
All of the characters were well written and each of the love interests were their own individual and brought their own thing/impact to the FMC. I loved the sarcasm and dry humor of the FMC as well as her bada$$ nature.
Honestly cannot wait to see what happens in book 2 after the cliffhanger.
This was a cute why choose series by a new to me author. The characters were likable and sweet - even though it was a bit of an enemies to lovers situation. The enemy portion mostly takes place prior to the start of the book. I had a difficult time connecting how the MMC's acted prior to the start vs. how quickly they fell in love with the FMC once the book started. I did finish the series and overall, I would give them 3.5 stars. These are fun, light, and quick reads if you need a daily fix of paranormal and why choose ;) Happy reading !
I Really enjoyed this story about Manion who is a pain water and healer. Quite a long time ago one of her team went missing and the three men blamed her. She was covered in his blood but there was no body. They have treated her horribly over the years without just cause. It's just come to light though that Gabe's abduction is not all that it seems and he is possibly in the Underworld. The men realise they have been too hard on her and vow to make it up to her. Meanwhile she is on the run from the guy who bought her as part of her father 's debt. Hot read.
I love it when authors come up with new or unique creatures such as a paineater And the berserkers is not common week. They were both in this book. In a situation where she needs protection the fmc even though gh shes part demon reaches out for help and gets more than expected. The mcs keep you on your toes with their hot and cold. At times you love them at times you hate um. I found this pnr rh slow burn to be an easy and enjoyable read.
This should have been put up as a bully romance. I didn't like any of the MMCs at all, they left her to bleed out and die when they were meant to protect her. Then somehow we are meant to believe she falls in love with them??
All that bullying for 3 years where they didn't care about her, out of the blue now they start investigating properly. How can they not believe in magic when they are not human themselves.... Really
Great book! I love the guts and strength of Manon. She does her best to help others, using her gift to relieve their suffering, all the while suffering in silence herself. The story is captivating and the evolution of her relationships with the 3 other team members is exciting. I can't wait to get to the next installment and see what comes next! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This was a really enjoyable read. I loved the interaction between Manon, Cass, August and Nico. This was a really enjoyable read. I loved the interaction between Manon, Cass, August and Nico. The story and emotions really drew me in. There's mystery, drama, angst and plenty of hot sexy scenes and I can't wait to read the second part.
GREAT READ! I thought it had an original storyline. There was action, a bit of angst, and some steam! We get multiple POVs, which I love. I'm not a big fan of Nico or Cass, but I'm hopeful that will change in the next book. I loved August though! I also loved Manon! She was a great FMC. Overall, I really enjoyed it!
FMC is on a supe team with 3 other males where they take care of supes who are getting out of hand. The rest of her team hates her because she is the last person to have seen their 4th alive. She is also on the run from a crime lord and has to rely on the guys for protection. Good start to a series and the FMC is very likeable!
3.5 stars So I’m enjoying this series. I like the character and the story was pretty good. I do wish we had seen a little more of the team work they were supposed to do together. The story focuses more on their relationships then the world their in. The ending and how Cass reacted pissed me off though, can he not learn from his HUGE mistake? I hope the series keeps getting better.
The concept was interesting, but the last 50 pages or so were so fast. I had to go back and reread the whole sections because I’m like - what the hell just happened?? Also, the switch up of the MMC‘s from “I don’t like her” to “oh, maybe I do” was way too fast and seemed like it was missing context.
A really great, intriguing story that had interesting, likeable characters. A slow burn reverse harem that drew me in with its terrific world building and action.
I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Highly recommend! I was pulled right into the story, and loved how realistic the characters were. There's a masterful balance between watching the romantic dynamics between characters evolve while maintaining a intriguing storyline. With how it ended I can't wait to read the next installment!
Fantastic read for this series. Just enough to get me hooked. Love all the guys so far . Had me laughing quite a few times. The romance scenes were really hot!!!
Entertaining story and interesting characters. Enjoyed the progression, to the finish of this book, of the relationships. Some creative twists included
