Ancient Warrior by Katie Reus
Ancients Rising book #8. Paranormal romance. Best read in order but can be read as a stand-alone. Dragon shifter, tiger shifter, witch, fae, and second chance troupe.
Aodh, an ancient dragon shifter, was captured by a witch and held prisoner for years as she fed off his energy. Having escaped, he is back with his teammates, Harlow, Brielle, and Axel as they hunt the witch. They need to stop her from killing the fae families. Aodh and Harlow were tricked at the time of their separation and now want to commit to their mating bond.

A fast moving adventure with a bit of mystery, romance, friendships and made-family. While the series is mostly set in a rebuilding New Orleans, much of this book take place away from home. It’s fun revisiting with characters from prior books in this series. Hunter and Willow are favorite dragonlings with their chirps and the getting better flying and their amusing pet cats. Of course, the hot dragon and tiger shifters finally getting their HEA is delicious.

I loved the whole premise of Harlow and Aodh’s relationship. After reading the blurb I had questions. So many questions. And learning the answers to them was the best part of all. Filled with twists and turns and danger on a level unlike any I’ve read before, I was totally consumed with this book.

While Harlow was more than capable of taking care of herself, Aodh's natural tendency was to protect. In doing so, he never crossed the line but stood beside her along the way ready to do his part when needed. They were awesome together and their chemistry burned through the pages each time they gave in to their desires.

I loved the additional relationship surprise that popped up as well as what I hoped was a little tease to another world we might have more of in the future. There was also more of Willow and Hunter, which are always my favorite, but I’m not ready for them to grow up! With a cast of characters that add a rich layer to not only this book but the series, this is another incredible addition to the series!

It’s good, if very formulaic. Nothing surprising - especially for those of us who have read in this world from the beginning of the Darkness series. It was fun getting to see so many previous characters, but I’m just not finding anything different. Still, the formula works, so whenever one wants to dip back in, the water’s always warm and the writing’s always good!

I love this series, and it just keeps getting better and better. Ancient Warrior is the eighth book in a series of standalone romances all set in the same world. I love this because the protagonists in the books are usually secondary characters in the other books, so you get to catch up with all of your favorites and see what they’re up to.

I was really excited to learn more about Harlow’s story, as she’s been a more elusive character since the beginning of the series. A former Black Ops agent before The Fall, Harlow’s life changed in an instant when the love of her life tried to kill her. Harlow had to kill him instead, and she’s never fully recovered. Aodh was just as in love with Harlow as she was with him, which is why he doesn’t understand why she abandoned him and left him to the cruel dictates of his captor. Now free, Aodh wants answers and revenge.

It’s so tragic to think that, for over a decade, Harlow believed she killed Aodh after he betrayed her and her friends. And the entire time, Aodh believed his Black Ops team, including Harlow, abandoned him. But for all those years apart, Harlow and Aodh never stopped loving each other. Their romance isn’t as high stakes or obstacle-ridden as some of the others in the series, but it’s just as sexy and compelling. Also, I think it’s one of the only second-chance romances in the series.

As with all of the Ancients Rising books, the world-building is vivid and immersive, and the secondary characters are fantastic. Plus, the dragons! I just adore the baby dragons and love every scene they’re in. And there’s another couple that I NEED to see together. They have great chemistry and so much angst, and I think they could be good for each other. They have been circling each other for several books, and the sexual tension between them is 🔥.

This is a great addition to the series. It’s exciting and suspenseful, and the romance is wonderful. I also like the direction the overarching plot is going, and I’m curious to see what’s in store for these fabulous characters and creatures in the next book. Special thanks to NetGalley and Katie Reus for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.

Years ago Harlow and Aodh had been on a mission together but the man she loved turned on her and tried to kill her and the others with them. Harlow had no choice but to defend herself and kill him. At least she thought she killed him but now he's back and he's mad because from his point of view, he'd been captured by an evil witch who kept him a prisoner in his dragon form in a dungeon and fed off his energy, keeping him too weak to escape.

Aodh waited years for Harlow to find him and save him but when she never came and he had a chance to escape, he pulled all the energy together he had and escaped his prison. After the confrontation where both Harlow and Aodh think their versions of what happened are the right ones, they get a witch to read both of their memories to see what really happened and find out the witch that kept him captive made them both see something different so neither one saw the truth of what was actually happening.

Now they both have to get over the shock and work together to find the witch and make her pay for what she did, all the while trying to sort out the feelings they had for one another.

I've been reading this series and really liking it but this book was a little slow on the pacing for me. I found myself a little bored at times but it picks back up towards the end and so I'm glad that I stuck with it. If you like this series, I would definitely read this book as well. Just don't expect it to be quite as exciting as some of the other books in this series. It does have a good ending though.

Disclosure: I was given an e-ARC of this book via NetGalley but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

The long-awaited story of Harlow, one of the sexy, deadly tiger twins has finally landed, and the fall was earth-shattering for those of us that have been fans since the beginning. We have gotten many hints in recent books that there was so much more to her than she shows the world openly, a heartbreak and sadness that she masks, but only as we’ve gotten little glimpses have we experience her true pain—until now. Katie Reus has a magnificent ability to draw readers into the worlds and lives of the characters she creates, making you wish you never had to return to reality, and the epic reunion between Harlow and her mate was definitely a perfect example. IF you are new to the series, you will by no means be lost, but you will miss out on a lot of the subtle undertones and backstories of characters the rest of us have come to know and love. All that said Harlow and Aodh drew me in from the very beginning as they found not only the truth of their separation, but a way to forgive and find their hearts reunited. If you are looking for a light fluffy romance, with an easy route to love, you’re looking in the wrong place, but otherwise come into the den of a master and read this tale of loss, tragedy, ecstasy, and love as two lovers find their way back together after hundreds of years apart.

Harlow once had all she ever wanted, the love of her life and the man she thought she would mate, a job she loved working with the family she cherished, and a future she looked forward to. Then it was all ripped from her when she was forced to kill the male she loved—except now he’s back after hundreds of years claiming that she deserted him to horrific imprisonment. Aodh has finally escaped the horrific captivity he has lived in for too long and he is hell-bent on tracking the woman that betrayed him to that existence, the woman that he once planned to take as his mate. When confronted with one another, both are amazed by the others claims and only with the help of a powerful truthsayer do they learn the true depths of their loss and the deception they both were dealt. Now they will have to work together to kill the witch that took their future away from them, and despite all that’s come between them they both still feel the pull, but Harlow doesn’t believe Aodh could ever forgive her and love her again. Spending time together and learning one another again is enough to remind them of their passion, but can the love forgotten love neither of them ever let go of be enough to overcome all they’ve lost or will they lose one another all over again?

This story was beyond heartbreaking, bringing me to tears again and again, for both Aodh and Harlow, not to mention their friends, but as we watch them overcome challenges and move obstacles from their path we come to understand why they were so perfect for one another. Harlow is a single-minded warrior, unwilling to ever give up in a fight and willing to sacrifice everything for those she loves. Her strength, cunning, sass, and loving care are just what Aodh needs to help him get through the trauma off his imprisonment and find a way to embrace his freedom, even though she doesn’t think he can love her anymore. Aodh had had such a tough time, dealing with imprisonment and separate from his mate, but also believing she betrayed him to said imprisonment, and you just want to cry for him all the time. When he finally finds freedom, he goes searching for him, telling himself he simply wants answers –of maybe revenge—but truthfully he never got over Harlow and just wants her love once again. His determination to his mission, unwillingness to settle for losing Harlow again, and willingness to forgive once the truth is uncovered show that he’s truly a great male. The heat between Aodh and Harlow is undeniable from the beginning, even during flashbacks and the fights between them, and once they begin to allow their hearts back into the equation that simmer becomes a fire to burn through time and space. I also loved the side romance, giving us a conclusion that was satisfying all around for four characters unexpectedly. I am dying for the next story, hoping to see more of my favorite characters and hoping for a happy conclusion for one VERY special couple (like vampire and sexy lion-shifter). Reus’s magic streak continues as this Ancient Warrior finds his places in the modern world and the hearts of readers.

Ancient Warrior is book 8 in the Ancients Rising series and another great addition to this series. Aodh is an ancient dragon who before the fall worked in the Black OPs with shifters Harlow, Brielle and Axel. They made a great team and during that time he fell in love with Harlow who he knew was his mate. Unfortunately, during an assignment the team was tricked and Aodh was imprisoned by the witch and the illusion she created made Harlow believe Aodh had betrayed them, and she was forced to kill him. So obviously their first meeting didn't go as planned with lots of hurt feelings on both sides. I love that it didn't take long for them to clear it all up and continue with their relationship. I loved the storyline with Brielle and as usual I loved all the side characters. I look forward to the next book in this series.

Series: Ancients Rising #8
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

Before the Fall, tiger shifter Harlow worked in Black Ops with the man she loved, until he tried to kill her. She was forced to kill him first. Over fifteen years later he returns and is determined to get an answer about what happened.

I really loved this. I have been waiting for the tiger twin’s books for a while now and we got both of them in one go, which was a lovely surprise. Harlow is a fierce woman who had to kill the man she loved to save herself. Watching her realize that Aodh is still alive and that she wants another chance at happiness was so emotional and perfect. I loved seeing these two embrace their second chance with minimal angst and go all in.

"He was hers and she was his. No matter what happened, no matter what the universe threw their way, she was mated to the male she loved."

Aodh was a fierce and protective dragon. I loved that he respected Harlow’s abilities and supported her during missions. He never got pushy or tried to stop her from doing something dangerous, which is my favorite kind of alpha hero. Like I said, I loved how Aodh embraced his second chance and jumped all into winning Harlow over again once the truth about his imprisonment was revealed.

The witch that imprisoned Aodh was very interesting. Energy witches are a new paranormal for this world and they are very dangerous. The hunt for this witch was exciting and gave us another look at the fae realms. I like that we continue to get new paranormals and unique enemies in this series. Reus really has created some amazing characters and villains for this series.

This book gives us a second mating, which was a wonderful surprise. Brielle, Harlow’s twin, finds her mate in the fae realm while they are hunting the witch. She was a fascinating character and I really hope we learn more about her in future books because I want to see more of her abilities and their romance. Overall, this was another wonderful couple and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book.

Trigger Warnings: Aodh was poisoned and imprisoned for years. Harlow believed she killed Aodh to protect herself and lived with the guilt of it; mass murder (including children) referenced;

Another gripping book from Katie Reus!

I have become a huge fan of Katie's this year so I was psyched to have a chance to read an ARC from her. I will admit I didn't have much experience with reading paranormal romances and shapeshifting. I was also concerned since I was starting with book 8 in a series, but this story was very easy to get into and follow.

This is Harlow and Aodh's story. Before the fall her and Aodh worked on ops together and during one of them Harlow thinks Aodh turned on her and she killed him. 15 years later he is back and there are unanswered questions, some awkwardness and good angst that come with these two reuniting and having their second chance at romance.

I loved reading about Harlow, she was very capable and badass and caring for those around her. Aodh was a fun character too. He was fiercely protective of Harlow and his team, but never controlling. I loved how as soon as he realized what happened, he was fully commited to having Harlow as his mate. Also, being a fan of Katie's romantic suspense books, I loved that they used to work ops.

Another aspect I enjoyed about this book was how there was LGBTQ+ representation as well as a neurodivergent character. Found family is a big theme in this book and I really loved that. I felt a lot of happiness when reading that I could escape into a fantasy world, but it wasn't so high fantasy that it was confusing for me. I loved how accepting, loving and protective these characters were of eachother.

I plan to go ahead and read the first book in this series, and check out some other paranormal books from Katie Reus as well.

Thank you so much to NetGalley, Katie Reus and KR Press for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Pure evil exists. A witch who feeds on death and destruction. She has killed many innocents. For many by years she kept a powerful fire dragon captive. Aodh thought his team had abandoned him and was determined to get revenge. Harlow, his fated mate, believed he tried to murder her. She lives with that pain every day. I was amazed that nobody realized it was the witch's doing. Now that Aodh has escaped, I couldn't wait to see what would happen. The fierce dragon and the tiger shifter are meant to be together, but this witch is merciless. Can they eradicate this ancient evil? I was hooked! I had to see how this story played out. Harlow is a strong woman. Aodh is powerful and possessive. I cared for these characters as well as the rest of the supernaturals. They leap off the page. As always I enjoy seeing characters from the previous books. Katie Reus gave us a wonderful story filled with romance and an epic adventure. The dialogue, characters and setting are perfect. I can't imagine what will happen next.

If I could I'd give this 6 stars.

This book may just be one of the best so far in the series.

Aodh and Harlow are so perfect for each other. It also made my heart melt, that Harlow's twin, Brielle, is not left out.

Still waiting for Axel to have his HEA.

Phoebe and her brothers are finally settled and acting like normal kids which is a total fist pump moment.

A Dragon and a Tiger. I always enjoy a new story in the ANCIENTS RISING SERIES. There is such a unique array of characters that just capture you heart.

Harlow and her family have made a home for themselves in New Orleans.

He realized he was growling aloud as the past consumed him and he forced the memory away, locked it up tight where it belonged.

Aodh is out for revenge on the person he thinks abandoned him. When secrets come to life they join forces to destroy the evil imprisoned him for years.

Before Axel could formulate any sort of answer, a very naked Aodh appeared out of thin air, picked up the guy who’d tried dancing with Harlow as if he weighed absolutely nothing and threw him down the street.

Fast paced adventure that you can’t put down. Read this one in one sitting that’s how good it was.

𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄

After reading the summary, I was full of questions, such as how lovers could turn into enemies. And while the answers are immediately provided, time and distance put a dent in Harlow and Aodh relationship.
Harlow was never unable to really mourn Aodh, lost in her sorrows, incapable to comprehend why he turned against them. So she just put all her feelings in a box and went on with what she has always known, her family and her tasks.
But now, by a sort of payback, he is back in her dreams and she can not hide anymore her pain.
Aodh never understood why his friends let him rot in a prison, why they never came to rescue him. So now he is finally free, he wants answers. Why the woman who should have been his mate left him to his fate.

Their romance and the events leading to their breakup were easy to sort out, now it is up to them to see if they can mend what once was.
They are both so sweet, each still burning for the other despite their estrangement.

The added hints of side characters’ romantic entanglement is also fun.
As is the exploration of another realm, it opens new paths for upcoming stories.

ANCIENT WARRIOR is the eight instalment in Katie Reus’ contemporary, adult ANCIENTS RISING paranormal, fantasy romance series. This is dragon shifter Aodh, and Siberian Tiger shifter Harlow’s story line. ANCIENT WARRIOR can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

SOME BACKGROUND: Months earlier, several dragons rose from their sleep, and in the aftermath destroyed much of the city of New Orleans, Louisiana, in an apocalyptic showdown known as The Fall, but in doing so revealed the existence of the supernatural world to humankind. Ancients Rising focuses on the recovery of the city, and the group of supernaturals and dragons who have come to call New Orleans their home.

Told from third person perspective ANCIENT WARRIOR in the wake of the rising of dragon shifter Aodh. Approximately fifteen years earlier, Aodh was betrayed by the woman he loved, left to suffer at the hands of an energy witch. Having been imprisoned underground in the world of the Fae, the magic around Aodh began to wane, and he found himself on the hunt for the woman he used to love. Enter tiger shifter Harlow, a woman whose heart was broken by the man she once loved, a dragon who is determined to destroy her life. What ensues is the rebuilding romance and relationship between Aodh and Harlow, as Aodh, Harlow, and her team go in search of a serial killer targeting entire Fae villages.

Harlow and Aodh never knew the real truth, only the truth they had been lead to believe. A witch of enormous power had entrapped our story line hero, leaving him in hibernation for close to fifteen years. Harlow struggled to move on from the loss of the man she once loved, a man who believes Harlow left him to die.

The relationship between Aodh and Harlow is one of second chances. Aodh believes he was targeted year before, target by the woman that had stolen his heart. Reconnecting with the past, Aodh and Harlow enter into a journey of redemption, in an effort to take down a serial killer. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

Once again, there is a large ensemble cast of supernatural secondary and supporting characters. We are introduced to Brielle and Harlow’s parents, as well as Brielle’s fated mate Vita.

ANCIENT WARRIOR is a story of betrayal and vengeance, power and control, murder, madness, determination and love. The fast paced and character driven premise is inviting and intriguing; the romance is fated and edgy; the characters are dynamic and determined.

I just love this series so much and with each book I'm getting more and more hooked. I love the shifter trope and Ms Reus surely has a knack for writing it.

This time we get a second chance romance between two people who have loved each other for ages, have known they were mates from early on but who were brutally ripped apart by things out of their control.

Harlow is a tiger shifter, a fierce warrior always ready to defend and help the weak. She was part of a black ops team years ago where she found love for a dragon named Aodh. When on a mission one day Aodh turned against her and attacked, she had to do the unthinkable.. she had to kill him to safe herself and her team.

Aodh was captured by an evil witch who's been using his blood to give herself more power. He's been kept hidden under the castle in the fae realm where during an attack on the fae realm he was able to free himself and now he's out for revenge. He also wants to find Harlow again to demand answers, because he's convinced she and the team just left him behind. Nothing could be further from the truth...

When they meet again during a party where Harlow is going a bit overboard with giving attention to a male, Harlow is stunned to see Aodh still alive. At first they're both angry at each other, but once they get help and it turns out it's something that happened different for the both of them, they give their relationship a new go.

Meanwhile, they work together to find the witch reponsible for killing a lot of innocent people and to get revenge for the pain she caused Harlow and Aodh.

This was a real sweet story with lots of smexy times, lots of banter between the team mates and some twists and turns. What I also loved was that there was a little side romance, someone else on the team who got their happy end. We also see appearances of Christian and Axel who are still secretly pining after each other. I soooo hope that they've spoken to Ms Reus already to give them their story. I really am so very impatient to read it, so please Ms Reus, if you're reading this, how about it?

All in all, this was another excellent book which I very highly recommend.

I just love me some Katie Reus, especially her paranormal stuff. The world(s) she's created are so vibrant and believable, that you just want to move in... well, to some of the territories anyway. The shifters and other paranormals who live in her books are funny, flawed, and perfect, and I always find myself falling in love with them. I love that there are so many characters in her Ancients Rising series, and the MCs of one are secondary characters in others, though I find it impossible to remember all their stories. You can read the stories as standalones, but there are also certain secondary romances or storylines that link them. And anyway, why wouldn't you want to read all of them since they're so fun?

We get tiger shifter Harlow's story here. It's a second chance romance, shifter style, with her former BF, dragon shifter Aodh (pronounced Ae, best I can figure) returning from the dead to claim her, even though he thought she'd abandoned him. He wasn't truly dead, obvi (or not obvi because paranormal), even though Harlow was sure she stabbed him pretty thoroughly 15 years ago. Turns out it was all the shenanigans of an evil energy witch, who'd captured Aodh and kept him prisoner to snack on. He actually had a cameo in another book, when he was rather accidentally freed by another powerful ancient. Don't ask me to remember which book (Ancient Something); I could look it up, but nah.

So they reunite, and the two-- along with Harlow's twin Brielle and lovelorn lion shifter Axel-- set out to find and destroy the evil bitc-- er, witch. The danger is interspersed with funny stuff and sexy times and more of Axel and vampire Christian not getting together (hopefully just yet).

Another winner by an author who is a must-read for me.

I received an ARC of this book for free from the publisher and Netgalley. I'm writing this review voluntarily, and it reflects my honest opinion. Thanks!

This is book 8 in the Ancients Rising series, and while it can be read as a standalone-I recommend reading the other books in the series because these characters are pretty interconnected. With that being said, in this one we get Harlow's story!! Harlow worked black ops before the fall with her crew. She loved everything about her job, until she was almost killed by the male she loved. And she was forced to kill him instead. But Aodh is back. And he wants answers as to why she and their crew left him imprisoned. And when they both realize that what they thought was the truth was a lie, they will have to not only hunt down an ancient enemy but they will also have to try to move past the past and work towards their future.

I absolutely loved this story!! I wanted to know more about who was released when that happened previously, and this in no way disappointed! Aodh has been through literal hell for so long, and he is angry (who wouldn't be) but when he realizes what exactly happened? He doesn't hesitate to place the blame where it belongs and go after his woman. Harlow has lived with the pain of thinking she had killed the man she loved, and it definitely changed the way she saw the world. But when he returns and she knows the lies that they both believed-she has to figure out a way to not only forgive herself but show Aodh that she has always loved him. These two are perfect for each other! Not only do they truly love and care about each other, but they are willing to die for each other. Their chemistry is off the charts but they also truly have a connection that I loved. I loved seeing previous characters and the new ones introduced. But then, I am absolutely loving this whole world and as long as there are great characters in it-I am going to keep reading these books!

This is a favorite series. Ancient dragons with just about every kind of shifter have created a community where they all work together and have created a thriving community in New Orleans after the fall. This is Harlow the tiger twin's story who worked black ops for a special paranormal unit before dragons outed all the paranormals and just about destroyed the world. The unit she worked in with Axel the lion and her twin Brielle also included the love of her life Aodh, a powerful fire dragon. On their last op tracking a serial killer, the unimageable happened and he turned on her, and she had to kill him in self defense. She's been pretty closed off for the last 15 years. Now she's having dreams about him and the grief is bubbling up.

Harlow and her friends have settled in King's New Orleans domain and feel it's home now. Axel and Brielle take Harlow out on the town determined to help each of them get past the loss of Aodh. When he suddenly appears, the hurt and betrayal flies from both sides. Ace, King's second gets involved to quiet it down, and decides Aodh will stay with the vampire Christian for the night and with the help of the witch Dallas and Magic Man, they'll get to the truth of what happened the next day.

Aodh has been in a prison under a fae castle in the Domincary realm for 15 years with a witch feeding off his energy keeping him weak. When Starlena, an ancient dragon comes to wreck vengeance on an evil fae king, his prison cracks allowing him to break free. He flies back to earth with two goals: find Harlow and find out why she abandoned him, and find the evil witch Flavia and kill her. The adventure of Axel, Harlow, Brielle and Aodh tracking down Flavia is exciting and a fun read.

Before "the Fall" when supernatural beings were revealed to humans, Harlow worked Black Ops for the Marine's shifter unit alongside her twin Brielle, friend Alex, and lover Aodh. Their mission is to take down a serial killer witch, but things go horribly wrong when Aodh turns on the team and Harlow is forced to kill him. She's never recovered from killing the love of her life, so she's shocked when he reappears with accusations that she left him behind, imprisoned and abandoned for fifteen years. How is it possible that he's even alive? Why is his enemy still after him? And is it possible to love again after so many years and hurt feelings between them?
I was planning on reading the series first, which I feel would have helped better understand the world building and previous characters. But for the sake of a review before publication, I read this book first. It wasn't hard to fall into the story since she does a good job describing the world after the fall. There were so many extra characters to keep track of though that I focused on the main group and then didn't feel like I was missing anything. It can be read as a standalone with a wonderful HEA, but would be much better read in order.

Aodh and Harlow’s story is just everything. While you can certainly read these as standalone books, I highly recommend reading this whole series - they are all excellent!

This series convinced me that post-apocalyptic worlds aren’t all bad. I mean, sure, they survived something terrible when the dragons destroyed most of the world and a lot of the infrastructure we take for granted, but the stories that come out of it are phenomenal. We join our merry band of housemates with a focus on Harlow, one of the twin tiger shifters. She’s always come across as damaged in the past, but this book shares the betrayal she was living with for years.

Aodh, a dragon shifter and Harlow’s intended mate, has been locked up by an evil witch for years, until a battle knocked him loose from his prison. He believes that Harlow betrayed him, both living a lie because of the witch’s magic. Don’t worry, though, because this story comes with excellent retribution, a lot of clearing the air, a healthy dose of witty banter, smut, and a HEA (for more than just Harlow). We also get guest appearances from our favorite other characters in this world, which is always nice. I enjoyed watching this one play out and can’t wait to see where we go next (Axel maybe?).

Oh hell yes! I dropped literally everything, except my e-reader when another part in the Ancient Rising series of Katie Reus popped up on Netgalley. I’ve read a lot of different series from Katie, but this is one of my favorite series. And this one is about Harlow and Brielle. (If you haven’t read the previous parts: they are the tiger twins from Ancient Protector, who were with Star and Aurora) The story can be read as a standalone, but you’ll enjoy the dynamics between Christian (a vampire) and Alex (a lion shifter) sooo much better if you have read the whole series, which is no hardship. Aodh is new to the story, but the rest of the characters are mostly from the previous part, which is just awesome. We learn more about the time before The Fall, when Harlow and Aodh were lovers. But then Aodh betrayed her and Harlow had to kill him. But now he appears to be still alive! Of course Katie reveals only snippets of the story throughout the book to keep you hooked. (And yes, it works). Of course there are twists and turns and the suspense will keep you on the edge of your seat. Highly enjoyable! But I still hope there will be a story on Christian and Alex as well. Five out of five stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.

This is book eight in The Ancients Rising series and it is Harlow and Aodh’s story and omg it is definitely a must read. Harlow and Aodh have a love that is so strong and they are definitely soulmates until someone completely breaks them apart in a way that makes you wonder if they could ever come back together again when they meet again many years later. Harlow and Aodh will have to confront their past and trust each other again and work together to eliminate the threat if they ever want a second chance of having a future together which is what they both definitely deserve. This story takes you in right from the start and will have you completely hooked and unable to put it down as it is so addictive and the twists and turns keep coming which added to the tension, danger, suspense, drama, action, hope, love and emotional situations that have you turning the pages and on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next and what the outcome will be for them all. I definitely recommend you read this book and you will not be disappointed as nobody writes PNR like Katie Rues and I can’t wait to read more books in the future.

Things aren't always as they seem. Harlowe and Aodh find that out the hard way.

Before the fall Harlowe, her sister Brielle, Aodh and Axel were marines, members of a supernatural black ops team. Like most teams, the four of them were family. But Aodh and Harlowe were something more. Until the night Aodh attacked his team and Harlowe was forced to kill him. Doing so almost killed her. Now Aodh is back with completely different memories of that night. The four of them need to come to terms with what happened as they hunt down the ancient witch who came between them.

This next entry in the Ancients Rising series is a fast moving, action packed adventure. The characters are engaging and the relationships are comfortable. Despite the time that has passed and the events that conspired to separate them, their reuniting doesn't feel forced. I enjoy seeing familiar characters as a part of the story, too. This could be a great entry into the series and can stand alone, but I guarantee, after meeting some of the peripheral characters, you'll want to go back and read all their stories.

Back to New Orleans we go and it's time for Harlow to get her HEA.

She has been a mainstay protector in the series so far but not much was known about her time before The Fall. Now we learn more about her time in Special Forces, her teams and her love for Aodh. The same Aodh she thought she had killed!

Aodh has finally managed to break through the prison an energy witch imprisoned him in. Now he's after the truth of why Harlow, his love, left him to rot there.

When they finally meet and all the lies, misconceptions and illusions are put to bed Harlow and Aodh fall right back into their relationship. I loved learning more about this epic pair of lovers, as well as the little family they formed with Brielle and Axel. Axel got his buddy/brother back. It was so sweet when they all finally admitted they had kept some of Aodh's things.

There was lots to enjoy in this book. Not only the snarky familial banter and teasing, the flaming hot chemistry and search for the energy witch. There is also a shock or two in store for Brielle!

Years ago, Harlow, a tiger shifter, believed that her lover Aodh was going to kill her. She killed him and has mourned his death ever since. Aodh, a dragon shifter, believes that Harlow betrayed him and he has been locked in a dungeon for the past fifteen years. The attack that destroyed the Domincary site has finally enabled him to be free, to seek his revenge against Harlow. She and her team are tracking rogue vampires when she gets the feeling that she is being watched, stalked. When Aodh finally reveals himself to her, she is shocked to find that he is alive. With the help of a witch, they realize that they were both under a powerful spell at the time. Their friends (previous characters) join them as they track down the evil witch who was responsible for his imprisonment. Will they find her and finally put an end to her career of death and destruction? A riveting addition to this amazing series! I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation, from the author, for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)

Ancient Warrior is a totally unexpected book, filled with twists and turns, danger and intrigue and lots of romance. Some times love is expected, can be unrequited and other times it hits out of nowhere! It is all here!

Aodh and Harlow had been part of a black ops group before the Fall that outed all paranormals to the humans that survived. Now everyone is learning to survive and rebuild. But Harlow thought that Aodh had attacked her and she had been forced to kill him. Fifteen years of mourning the loss of her lover and friend. Fifteen years of trying to move on.

For 15 years Aodh, an Ancient Warrior, dragon shifter had been a prisoner. All he thought to do was escape and find out why Harlow and the teammates that he considered family had abandoned him. He escapes and finds - they were both wrong!

Such a well done, enthralling read that gives us more than we could possibly imagine as author Katie Reus takes us back to her Ancients Rising series. It might be book 8 but still an amazing series. This is one you will not be able to put down and will not want to end!

4.5 stars!

I’ve been a long-time fan of Katie Reus’s romantic suspense books. When 2020 hit us like a ton of bricks, I could no longer lose myself in my usual genres. So when someone suggested I try a genre I wouldn’t usually read, I thought it was a great idea and decided to plunge into Katie Reus’s paranormal romances. Before I knew it, I was completely submerged in all things Ancients Rising. Ancient Warrior (book eight in the series) is a stand-alone title, but you will miss some terrific adventures if you skip the previous books.

After completely losing myself in this post-apocalyptic world within the pages of the previous books, I’ve been anxiously waiting for each new story, and Harlow and Aodh’s did not disappoint. It was a bit more intense and emotional than the previous book but more in line with the others in the series. Their backstory was incredibly heartbreaking, so their HEA was extremely satisfying. And now that I’m so invested in this world, I am very much looking forward to what’s next!

A second chance romance !

Harlow is a secondary character that I had liked a lot in the previous books and I was curious to see what her romance would be like ... OMG the angst !! All these misunderstandings between Harlow who thought that the man she loved had betrayed her and Aodh who thought he had been abandoned by his friends and his lover !

I loved how he stalks that witch (so creepy !)

In short, a second chance romance that is a pleasure to read !
