A fresh start is exactly what Hannah Fleming needs after getting dumped by her cheating ex-boyfriend. While getting rejected was awful, nine weeks removed she’s recognizing the benefits, seeing that relationship for what it was: unhealthy. Then, Hannah bumps into her high school crush, Seth Peters, and is offered a second chance to see if what was in the past can once again be magical in the present. But when her past threatens her second chance, she must determine how hard she’s willing to fight for her future.
SETH
A fresh start is exactly what Seth Peters needs. New place. New people. New opportunities. Except, he runs straight into one of the greatest unresolved moments of his past, Hannah Fleming. Suddenly life is offering a second chance with her, but can he hold onto all he’s learned over the last few years to make a future with Hannah work? Or will he backslide into old ways of being to hide the truth of his darker past?
As a kid, CL Walters’s world revolved around two things: stories and make believe. She’s built a real life around those two passions as a teacher of stories and a writer of make believe. From a small town in Oregon, she attended college in a smaller town in Oregon majoring in English and adding experiences to fill her creative reservoir. She married her college sweetheart and moved to Hawaiʻi where she now lives. The rich diversity and cultural complexity of Hawaiʻi has added to the tapestry of her creative journey.
In 2020, she started Mixed Plate Press —a publishing imprint—with her husband and has grown it into a thriving business as a published author, writing coach, ghostwriter, editor, and teacher.
She says she reads and writes everyday and her mission as a writer is to create stories that resonate with the truth and offer a place of hope.
"I've always thought that these truths make me unlovable."
Author C.L. Walters has stated that she feels really proud of this book—and it's no wonder that she's fond of such a gem within the Romance genre. "The Messy Truth About Love" is a second-chance romance between Hannah and Seth, who have had unresolved feelings for each other since high school. When life throws them together again, the spark reignites almost immediately, but each of them is dealing with different circumstances that might jeopardise their bond all over again.
This was a mature, thought-provoking read that made me consider many aspects of relationships. One of the things I loved the most was the fact that, when faced with a situation that many other romance novels would use to spark unnecessary conflict (miscommunication, a text that hasn't been replied to, a disagreement), TMTAL chose instead to portray how things are done in a healthy and loving relationship. Both Seth and Hannah were able to self-soothe, and respond to each other from a place of understanding and kindness, in the face of really difficult situations. The love they shared was respectful, warm, and sweet, and it made me feel all the butterflies! It was impossible for me to not fall in love with their bond.
Each of them is sporting emotional wounds from different circumstances they've faced in their lives, and I was really, really in awe of how C.L. Walters addressed the different traumas Hannah and Seth were carrying upon their shoulders. On the one hand, Hannah's guilt about what happened the night her father died, and her relationship with Sebastian; on the other, Seth's lack of trust that his father has left alcohol for good, and his constant battle against himself. Instead of hurting each other as a consequence of their trauma, they were able to use their past pain to hold both space and respect for the other's issues, and they were able to help each other out. I was really emotional when Seth held Hannah's hand as she found her voice, and her worth, and the way Hannah held Seth's heart when he confessed his darkest secret to her still makes me weak in the knees. Can you tell already that I fell in love with both MCs?
This is a story about giving second chances—not only to old high school crushes, but also to oneself. It feels like coming home to a pair of open arms, and a warm cup of tea, and all the healthy love and affection in these pages will make you feel comforted, and cherished. There isn't any other way in which I can describe how this book made me feel; somehow, seeing two people who were as hurt as Hannah and Seth are find love, and be good for each other in the face of trauma and hardship, made me feel like that. It's the promise that things can be fixed, that people can change, that everything can be okay.
Of course, it's not all rainbows and heart eyes. I'd like to give everyone a heads-up that intimate partner violence is depicted in this book, with (SPOILER ALERT) one violent scene in which a woman is physically assaulted by her ex-partner, who breaks into her home (SPOILER ENDS). The violence starts much earlier than that in the story, of course, and the author does an extraordinary job at showing the insidious, sinister way in which this type of abuse goes from seemingly inoffensive remarks or behaviours, to something far worse and scarier. It isn't an easy thing to read about, because of how realistic the portrayal was; the abused character doesn't see the violence at first, and when she does, she constantly doubts her perception of things as a result of many months of being gaslit and subtly manipulated. This gave me more than one goosebump, so please proceed with caution.
All in all, I couldn't stop turning the pages, and I really enjoyed my first C.L. Walters book. Since this story is connected to the author's Cantos Chronicles trilogy (which doesn't make it hard to follow. I haven't read the Cantos books yet, and I could still connect with the characters and follow the plot), that might very well be my next stop!
Keep in mind I’m completely biased (I wrote the book). This was a difficult book to write and my insecurities wrapped up in it are complicated, but ultimately, I am so proud of it.

Absolutely loved this story. For me the romance was everything I look for. The chemistry was electric, the kissing perfect and the sheer intensity they both had for each other was something special. **SIGH** I was all in from the very beginning and I liked how the author wrote about these difficult subjects. Taking me on their healing journey. I liked this so much that I bought another novel by this author right away. Highly recommend this one. Thanks C. L. Walters via NetGalley.
The Messy Truth About Love is an exceptionally good story about starting over and reconciling the past with the present. It is a story about unraveling your true self by exposing the ugly and messy truth and the pain from which you are trying to rebuild. It is a story about rediscovering yourself and who you once were in order to find out who you are meant to be. It is a story about forgiveness and acceptance of other people but mostly of yourself. It is a story about love. In this book, falling in love is compared to the feeling of coming home. Well, reading this book will give you the exact same feeling. To be more specific, it will give you all the feels (no kidding). It will make you feel excited, happy and empowered, but it will also make you feel angry, scared and sad. Ultimately, it will make you feel content and safe because The Messy Truth About Love is an ode to the only kind of love we all deserve: a love built on respect.
While reading The Messy Truth About Love I was completely mesmerized by its beautiful and poignant story and I was like "I need to find the right words in order to convince every single human being on earth (and every creature beyond) to read it!". Since I'm not very good with words I'm not sure I will ever be able to achieve my goal, but I am definitely going to keep on recommending this book as well as every other book written by C.L. Walters because, unlike me, she is reeeeally good with words and I think we all need to hear what she has to say! So, do me and yourself a favor and just read her books!
Hannah and Seth have known each other since kindergarten. Having gone their separate ways for school, they are surprised to run into each other while at college. It is not long before the two get together but both of them have their own individual baggage. Hannah has an ex that won't leave her alone and is still grieving for her father who passed away two years earlier. Seth is keeping a secret about the accident he was in a few years earlier and is struggling with the diagnosis that his abusive alcoholic father may be sick. Can the two overcome their own personal issues together and make their relationship work?
This book in one word - AMAZING! While the romance element was sweet, there was so much more to the story. Family relationships, sexual and emotional abuse, alcoholism, stalking and violence - I commend the author on the way in which she addressed each of these issues. I have read a few books by this author and am always amazed at the depth of her storylines. If you have not read anything by her, please do yourself a favour and pick up one of her books - you won't be disappointed.
Thank you so much to the author for a copy of your book - I am already looking forward to your next masterpiece.
This book was a very mature look at relationships. I liked how the author portrayed the relationship between Hannah and Seth, how they handled conflict realistically and respectfully. This was the first book I've read by this author and I plan to read more of them. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced reader copy.
The first word that comes to my mind after reading this book is 'cute', but I don't think that it gives any justice to this book. In my opinion you have to have a special talent to write a story involving different kind of mental problems, that characters face. And even though you know what each of the characters suffered and what's holding them back from living their lives to the fullest, it's not pushed on you or reminded in every sentence. It's sad, romantic, full of love and care. As you imagine every second-chance story should be like.
What I did not like is the note from Sebastian and how it looks in the book. Gives me "Diary of a wimpy kid" vibes.
Do you like YA drama?💕 I didn’t read a lot of YA drama until we started our Bookstagram, and then I couldn’t stop reading it! The Messy Truth About Love by C.L. Walters is the kind of love and angst that I’m usually drawn towards. Hannah and Seth have both recently gone through some major life changes, when they run into each other at college, they’re extremely surprised and grateful. They’ve known each other since they were kids, and briefly in high school had a connection, but now they hesitantly would like to move forward with something more serious. Hannah is dealing with the loss of her father, and now her ex who cheated on her, is very aggressively wanting her back. Seth has been working through his feelings with his abusive father is trying to stay on the wagon and worries about his mom’s safety. The Messy Truth About Love, has some very Colleen Hoover feels with a lot of emotion, but also some trigger warnings. Thank you @cl.walters for this gifted copy! You can find The Messy Truth About Love on our Amazon storefront, this just published and is available now!🧜🏼♀️🌺 .
"Love might be messy. Life might be complicated. But being at home with your person means being all in, the good, the bad, the messy, the ugly, the beautiful. All of it."
For all the difficult subject matter discussed, it's a very surface level take on DV and toxic relationships.
Had I known this was a continuation/spin-off of a previous series, I may not have picked it up. While it is labelled as NA, it reads as YA and, as I get older, I find I'm not as enamoured with YA/NA titles as I once was. The characters and writing are too juvenile.
I enjoyed aspects of the second-chance romance between Seth & Hannah. Their re-acquaintance 'meet-cute' was sweet, but as their relationship blossomed and began to get into the messy, I felt it got cleaned up too quickly and neatly.
After reading the author's note at the end, I appreciate what they were attempting, but unfortunately it fell a little flat.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to review a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest, unbiased opinion.
I’ll have my daughter read it when she’s older. Someone who says they love you but they pressure you or don’t make you feel good isn’t love. You should feel safe with your significant other.
Seth and Hannah’s relationship models a good one and it’s good to read how they overcome their i obstacles and have healthy conversations about it. I liked their characters. I also really liked Trace and Jewels. The friends of Seth and Hannah. Everyone needs such supportive friends.
A lovely romance about the internal barriers Seth and Hannah have to break through in order to open up to each other and find the love that they wouldn't allow themselves before, as well as the external barriers Hannahs's abusive ex keeps throwing at them.

Cami (author) you did it again! 👏🏻
Here, another stand alone novel that I’ve enjoyed reading since the first paragraph.
Love came in different ways and shapes. Sometimes it is in front of us and we just shut the door because we feel we aren’t ready or prepared to receive or give love. Perhaps, we are just blind and think we love someone or something just because our eyes are fixed on the moment and don’t see the full picture. Love is a very complex value and sentiment that can be amazing or become something terrifying.
This novel brings and shows the ugliness about what some people think love is. I really loved that the author didn’t romanticize the abuse found in relationships. All the contrary, she showed how some people twist their conception about love and the justification they use just to brainwash or manipulate someone in the name of “love”
For me, this stand alone novel is really good. I loved that it’s so connected to the Cantos’ Chronicles series but at the same time it feels different, more mature and realistic. Offering balance to some characters that had growth, started fresh, and got a renewed life.
These quotes touched my heart:
⁃ “I know that I deserve someone to listen to my concerns and validate my feelings. I know I should never have to hide either of those things to make my partner secure.” ⁃ “I know that my hopes and dreams are equally important to my partner’s.” ⁃ “I know that I should never make myself smaller.” ⁃ “I know that ny partner should respect my wants and wishes.” ⁃ “I know that I shouldn’t have to say `I’m sorry’ for being me.”
Last, but not less important, this novel has one of the best author's notes I’ve ever read. It truly empowers women to speak up when something is wrong.
And the playlist (available on Spotify) is perfect for reflecting and finding peace. Love can be messy, but the truth is … real love heals and can be restoring.
First of all, I’d like to thank C.L. Walters for the ARC.

Hanna and Seth are childhood friends who haven't seen each other for a while, and when they meet again during college, they give each other a chance to have a relationship despite the problems they have in their lives. On one side, Hannah is dealing with a breakup where her ex-boyfriend broke up with her after cheating on her, making her realize that she missed out the red flags in her previous relationship, while Seth is dealing with a dark past that he is trying to heal. The story allows a comparison between a toxic relationship and a relationship that is being built on a foundation of respect for both parties and how they help each other heal those wounds from the past. Also shows how it is possible to have a relationship despite the wounds that you have and as you are trying to heal. It is written in a dual POV, and what I liked is that you don't need to read the previous books to understand the story. Another thing I loved is how the story of the two main characters develop.
C.L. Walters is a talented writer, and it doesn’t matter which genre she writes in, I enjoy her writing and how she takes care of the stories and the characters she writes.

“The Messy Truth About Love” follows Seth and Hannah, a second-chance romance after they cross paths in college about 2-3 years after Seth moved away from the town where they grew up together. Their relationship blossoms as they pick back up where they left off, much to the dismay of Hannah’s ex-boyfriend.
There was a lot of difficult topics covered in this story, including the abusive nature of Hannah’s ex-boyfriend and the difficult relationship Seth has with his father, who is a recovering alcoholic. I think the author did an okay job exploring some of these topics. My issue with some of the handling of the story came near the end when it appeared that Hannah was pushing Seth to reconcile with his father on the premise that she regretted not spending time with her father prior to his passing. I took a lot of issue with this because Seth’s father was physically and emotionally abusive towards him and victims are never under any obligation whatsoever to reconcile with their abusers and perpetuating that notion is really harmful.
Overall, I couldn’t really get past this in the story and it ruined the small amount of interest in the story I had.
A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Trigger Warnings: Abuse, Alcoholism, Sexual Assault
The Messy Truth About Love by C. L. Walters is a new adult novel. This book in particular is about two young adults second chance at love with one another.
Seth Peters (some may have read ‘The Ugly Truth’ in the Cantos Chronicles series) left everything behind to start anew after a traumatic event. By chance, he meets his high school crush and seizes the opportunity to find out whether they can be more than friends. Luckily, signs point to yes.
Hannah Fleming just broke up with her cheating boyfriend and finally realizes that she is better off without him. Meeting Seth again, they connect on so many levels. Both have and are still facing demons from their past and are trying to work through them.
Together, Seth and Hannah’s relationship that is blossoming is cute. On the other hand, the constant appearance of her ex-boyfriend is quite toxic as you read on. Quite disturbing actually, if I must say.
I highly recommend this book for those who love a second chance romance. While it takes place after events of series, it is not necessary to have read those books before.
Seth and Hannah's story was as sweet as it was heartbreaking. Seeing these two trying to overcome their past hurts gave me hope that they would finally find the happiness they deserved, but at the same time it was hard seeing them working through their issues. Thankfully, Seth and Hannah were great characters to get to know. They both carried their own share of heartache and were determined to learn from their past. I came to admire their resilience and determination and the growth they both went through as they struggled to move on.
This is my first book by this author and I'm glad I decided to read it. I liked the way she told Seth and Hannah's story without making it feel overwhelming. I appreciated the author's way of handling the tough subjects and how she kept the story moving along by bringing different elements to the page. I also came to value the bit of humor sprinkled throughout as well as the range in emotions both characters portrayed. I especially enjoyed how Seth and Hannah's interactions furthered their connection at every turn and I loved the way Seth and Hannah were brought together in a way that felt real and fit their own individual stories.
All in all, a slow burn second chance romance with characters that overcame their past to move onto their HEA.
This is a beautiful story about second chances, learning to forgive yourself and opening up to others. It brings two young people full circle. They hadn't seen one another since shortly after their high school graduation. Even though they both were interested in each other, things fell apart after they left for college. When they meet up again a few years later, they've both lived through some things and aren't the same people. However, one thing that hasn't changed is the way they care about one another. But to make things work this time, they will need to trust each other and share their heartbreaks and secrets. Otherwise their messy histories will once again blow their potential future apart and they'll lose their opportunity yet again.
Heartbreakingly real and poignant, this book reaches into the reader's chest and pulls their heartstrings. It really does show how hard it is for a young person to trust someone else with their deepest regrets and secrets. It's a huge leap of faith that the other person will support you instead of abandoning you.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. I voluntarily chose to read and review it and the opinions contained within are my own.
CW/TW: Emotional/physical abuse, suicide, cancer, death, estranged parents, domestic abuse, sexual assault, second chance romance, sex
The messy truth about love was the perfect title for this novel. It explored the relationship of Seth and Hannah and the experiences that shape them. The novel showed the two narratives of the MCs - showing the trauma each has associated with death and how it has impacted their relationships, not only with each other but with, more importantly, themselves. Having found each other again at university after having a steamy encounter prior to their high school graduation, they try to reconnect but struggle to move on from their past.
The author discusses their trauma and has the characters deal with it in a mature way, proving it isn't anything to be ashamed of.
Having experienced trauma and its responses similar to the characters in the novel, I appreciated the author's normalization of therapy throughout it and reframing thoughts and emotions as it is something my therapist has made me very familiar with also. The novel definitely sparks a conversation regarding mental health and healthy emotions, as well as feminist themes of reclaiming your own power.
The novel wraps up with a happy-ever-after, or more likely a happy-for-now ending.
A new semester means a new start and in the new adult novel The Messy Truth About Love by C. L. WALTERS, two of the high schoolers from our favorite coastal Oregon town reunite for a second chance at romance. Seth and Hannah previously parted ways before the spark between them had the chance to grow. Now, a few years older and having seen more of the world, they engage in a sweet, slow courtship that promises everything each of them has longed for. Unfortunately, their journey to happiness is dogged by lingering mistakes and negativity from the not so distant past. Each swipe at their growing love threatens to unravel what they nurtured together and diminish any individual personal growth. This novel covers some very dark topics that are relevant to all romances, but are particularly a threat to young people. The Messy Truth About Love is an emotional and touching read that explores the highs and lows of a first mature relationship. The well rounded characters are realistic with believable motivations and relatable flaws. I enjoyed this book and I think you will too.
When I requested this book I had been unaware that it was a spinoff of another series that Walters had written. Potentially if I had already read these novels I would have connected to Seth and Hannah a little more, but overall it is a book that can still be followed easily without reading any other books.
To begin with, I really enjoyed Seth and Hannah bumping into each other and I love a second chance romance. However after a while I found the book really fell into a repetitive rut that I struggled to get past and found myself skimming pages to see if there was any plot development.
I think the key part of this problem is that the book is being called New Adult when really it feels much more closer to Young Adult. The character's perspectives and thoughts feel quite juvenile. Some of the writing style was slightly strange and I found myself paying attention to this rather than the romance (for example, "he exerts a gentle pressure with his hand in my hair"; "I was cognizant that I was afraid to scare her away with my exuberance").
The characters' lives feel real to life because they have trauma and guilt like all humans, and they do their best to overcome. Sometimes it is good enough; other times, not so much.
The message of Walters novels is critical to women's empowerment. The protagonist in The Messy Truth About Love finds strength to stand up for herself in an unequal power dynamic, which is what all parents want for their daughters. I will recommend this novel to my daughter, for sure.
The pacing flies, which I love because I don't like being bored by a book. The tension, palpable.
Also, despite the heavy subject matter, this book has a lot of fun, romantic scenes.
Just reread this contemporary new adult story. Set in college, Hannah has just gotten out of a relationship she's realizing wasn't healthy when she bumps into her high school crush, Seth. She and Seth rekindle their relationship, realizing they liked one another, only as their relationship progresses in a healthy way, Hannah's ex is doing everything in his power to derail it.
Definitely read the trigger warning offered at the beginning of the book, but this story feels like an important read to explore pervasive behaviors in unhealthy relationships in contrast to one that is healthy. Really good for readers 17+ beginning to have those long term relationships.
I can't even begin to review this book. I could not put it down. Absolutely stunningly told with real life situations, that I am all too familiar with. I can relate with Hannah's experiences, lost my dad unexpectedly 9 years ago, had an abusive relationship at one point, I'm a teacher, etc. So many things just sucked me in. Tastefully written with alternating viewpoints, which I love. So easy to get lost in this story. Thank you so much for the opportunity and I can't wait to read C.L. Walters' other books.
Thank you @netgalley for a digital advanced copy of The Messy Truth About Love.
This book was an enjoyable read. I liked the storyline and chemistry of Seth & Hannah, and I love a good dual POV. It was well-written, just wasn’t super memorable for me. 🤷🏻♀️
*Second Chance Romance *Slowburn -Please check trigger warnings- This book was a wonder to read. I liked how the author decided to tackle trauma and did it in a respectful way. It’s a great representation in the book community to showcase abusive relationships and the consent within them. I loved Hannah and Seth’s relationship and how they felt with their issues. Having someone their/your corner is so important and the author showcased that as well. Overall their relationship sat well with me. They truly felt authentic. I also liked POVs.
I’ve just finished reading The Messy Truth About Love!! A wonderful YA story with some powerful and important messages. Aww, that pull-push of teenage love really grabbed me! There are some serious issues discussed here including physical and emotional child abuse, alcohol abuse, stalking and harassment but the thread of sweet love and romance between Seth and Hannah was beautiful. A lovely book, an easy read and an important message about women empowerment too.
This is my first time reading work by CL Walters. I took this on as an author swap, which I am glad we did! I thoroughly enjoyed this as a stand-alone. The story took its time laying the calculated foundation while inching to explore the truth.
The author created multiple layers to each of her characters, and the ensemble cast rounded out the complete story. I loved how the author presented depth and lightheartness within the pages while delivering a powerful message. Well done!
As such an advocate of story, be they based in truth or fiction, I find myself continually drawn to C.L. Walters work. A master story-weaver around deep, and often complicated (yet relatable) circumstances, The Messy Truth About Love is no exception. Beautifully tackling unhealthy relationships, the subtleties of abuse, and the power of personal growth and healing—this book is a must read.
