Carlingen is a beacon of hope, promising fame and fortune but delivering neither. Athgar and Natalia, hoping to make their stay in the city short, arrive to find a nation on the brink of chaos. The king's court is rife with treachery and deceit, while the streets are infested with resentment and turmoil. Into this mix comes word the family is plotting to re-establish their dominance over the Continent.
Seeking to leverage Carlingen's instability, Ostrova demands land and is willing to do anything to acquire it.
The spectre of war looms large, threatening to cut off Athgar and Natalia from the very home they seek to return to in Torrent, the seventh installment of Paul J Bennett's series, The Frozen Flame.

Paul J Bennett (b. 1961) emigrated from England to Canada in 1967. His father served in the British Royal Navy, and his mother worked for the BBC in London. As a young man, Paul followed in his father’s footsteps, joining the Canadian Armed Forces in 1983. He is married to Carol Bennett and has three daughters who are all creative in their own right.
Paul’s interest in writing started in his teen years when he discovered the roleplaying game, Dungeons & Dragons (D & D). What attracted him to this new hobby was the creativity it required; the need to create realms, worlds and adventures that pulled the gamers into his stories.
In his 30’s, Paul started to dabble in designing his own roleplaying system, using the Peninsular War in Portugal as his backdrop. His regular gaming group were willing victims, er, participants in helping to playtest this new system. A few years later, he added additional settings to his game, including Science Fiction, Post-Apocalyptic, World War II, and the all-important Fantasy Realm where his stories take place.
The beginnings of his first book ‘Servant to the Crown’ originated over five years ago when he began a new fantasy campaign. For the world that the Kingdom of Merceria is in, he ran his adventures like a TV show, with seasons that each had twelve episodes, and an overarching plot. When the campaign ended, he knew all the characters, what they had to accomplish, what needed to happen to move the plot along, and it was this that inspired to sit down to write his first novel.
Paul now has four series based in his fantasy world of Eiddenwerthe and is looking forward to sharing many more books with his readers over the coming years.
Athgar and Natalia detour by A kingdom in turmoil, Carlingen, on their way home to see their young daughter that they have not seen for a long time. However, Natalia ends up at the castle where she meets with her cousin Svetlana who will become Queen once she marries the current king Maksim.
Both being Stormwinds, they come from a shady family who controls pretty much all the continent, except for the parts retaken by Athgar and Natalia.
Mean while, their friends and tribe relatives Keger, their son Agar and the Shaman Shunluk are present on scene with their daughter Oswyn, to the great joy of Natalia and Athgar, under the watchful eye of her Tribe Brother Agar.
Once the band is assembled, Natalia convinces the King to get rid of Larissa, the family's representative who wants the pair arrested and custody of their daughter whom she claims belongs to the family.
I will stop there as I sincerely hope that the reader enjoys this story as much as I did since it was written by a great author, it virtually takes you where the action takes place and, let's you experiment all the emotions and, yes, the magic that fills the plot. I highly recommend the book and 5 Stars appear insufficient for such a great read.
It doesn't matter which Paul J Bennett book you are reading, you are guaranteed an adventure. The world building and character development are wonderful. If you allow yourself to be immersed in the story, you will find yourself transported to a world where creatures we read about in mythical tales are as real as you or I. Paul's books never disappoint. My one complaint (if you can call it that)? The wait for the next book, as I tend to devour them so much faster than Paul can write them.
I received a free Advance Reader Copy of Torrent from the author and have chosen to leave a review.
As always, Bennett has produced a highly entertaining and imaginative story. Athgar and Natalia are heading home but stop in Carlingen where they find reasons to stick around and wait for their Orc friends who have been watching their daughter, Oswyn. And the reasons (problems?) for staying keep growing as the days pass. They witness threats to the kingdom (riots, deceptions and maybe war) as well as more trouble from the Stormwind family. Of course there are skirmishes, battles and extraordinary magic – some of the most amazing feats of magic that are nearly beyond comprehension! Another page-turner that exudes the power of a well-written tome.
GREAT ADVENTURE!!! Thank you Dream Team Paul and Carrol, for bringing us again into the world of Eiddenwerthe . Paul you have such a gift of words, to bring us INTO the story to feel that we’re part of the Troupe of Athgar and Natalia on this grand adventure of magic, intrigue, and swordplay. Absolutely brilliant !!!! No spoilers here! Your gonna have to read this “edge of the seat” Adventure! I give it 👍👍👍👍👍
I have read every book Paul has written in this collective series. I could mention character development, twist and turns in plot, adventure and extraordinary battle scenes as reasons why I read his books. While all of the above are true of Paul’s books, what I really like is that all his books are extremely interesting, entertaining, and most of all totally enjoyable!! Needless to say, Torrent is all of the above. As usual, I can’t wait for the book.
This is a wonderful addition to this thrilling series! Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story. Such a thrilling read that I couldn't put it down. Can't wait to read more of these. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Another home run for Paul J Bennett. He created another great book in a world of turmoil, greed and the fight for justice. Natalia and Athgar find themselves in another kingdom facing multiple challenges as they help a new king who wasn’t groomed to be the king. His characters are amazing and diverse. Tremendous world building that keeps you wowed from start to finish.
Who is more powerful? Natalia and Athgar find chaos in a neighboring nation, while on their way home. Can they help or does it lead to war? Mages are getting more powerful in this interesting, original story with wonderful characters. This unpredictable story starts to bring together different elements from all over this world.
Natalia and Athgar and their friends were returning to Therengia by way of Carlingen. Were they were to meet the Orcs bringing their daughter to meet them. Mister Bennett has written another excellent book which I've look forward to reading and thoroughly enjoyed. I can hardly wait for the next book in the series...
Fantastic! Paul J Bennett has written another brilliant story continuing the story of Athgar and Natalia. I can't wait to see how he will bring their story to a conclusion in the next book in this series. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and hope you do too.
I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
the frozen flame series is getting epic and the politics more intriguing, love the magic system and the torrent book is fulfilling many plot holes and as well leaving me wanting more, looking forward to final book and I am hoping we get a spin off of this series because I want to continue following this family
Athgar and Natalia return to Carlingen on the way to meet up with their young daughter. Problems are great in the city, and things do not look any better with the arrival of some very influential people. A ferocious storm is ahead.
Another phenomenal addition to The Frozen Flame series. In Book #7, Torrent, Paul J. Bennett continues his master storytelling of the adventures of Natalia and Athgar as they grow in power and influence. Magic abounds!
Another excellent addition to the series. Athgar and Natalia are again drawn into a fight for the survival of a country in the Petty Kingdoms against the Cunars and the family. Much fighting ensues!
Another great entry to the saga ! A lot going on in this one as we see family reunited and Family further undermined and dissenters deterred, upstarts and armies pushed back and defeated in a entertaining page turner!
