A Sea of Endless Light

Rate this book
Fox Axford has been tasked with capturing a feared thief who has been terrorizing the Hild Empire, not flirt with the impassive captain he’s been unlikely paired with.

When Fox is assigned to the Hild case by the Intergalactic Police Force, he doesn’t anticipate it taking very long. He’s known for his wits and charm and is confident enough in his abilities to have this thing solved and closed before the week is through. Except, he didn’t account for how distracting working with Captain Jiro Arc was going to be.

Jiro Arc has a secret he’s been keeping all his life, one that he’s never wanted to share with anyone. Until the day Detective Fox appears.

Having lived quietly climbing the ranks of the Hild Comets, Captain Jiro is used to rebuffing attention with his steely disposition. All of his efforts seem to have the opposite effect on the detective, however, who only seems more and more interested in Jiro and his personal life as time goes on. Their main task is to find the mysterious thief Shilling and bring him to justice, but Jiro has an agenda of his own, one that might ultimately lead to him betraying Fox, whether he likes it or not.

Fox grows even more conflicted after meeting the thief they’re after. Shilling isn’t at all what he expected, and when he finds himself sympathizing with the enemy, Fox is forced to acknowledge that there may be things he doesn’t yet know or understand about the vast universe, and the people living in it.

This book is a standalone featuring one charming detective and the captain he’s set his sights on. It is a slow burn, forbidden romance with depictions of violence (though mild) and explicit sexual scenes not suitable for all readers. While this book is set in the same universe as A Bright Celestial Sea, it is a complete standalone with an all new cast of characters. You do not have to read both books, but if you choose to they do not have to be read in any particular order since there are no connections between the two. Trigger warnings to come.

fourth reading 08/2025
I bought a bunch of books on impulse, started reading five or so in an hour, and couldn't get into any of them. I had to cure myself with one of my favorite books. Hope it helps long term.

Re-reading 03/2024
just read it again and I want to start all over again ... I must be suffering from a severe form of book addiction. 😳

I'm so in love with Fox, I'll never let him go. He is mine mine mine. 😍😍😍

First reading:
I am totally awestruck by Chani Lynn Feener. ❤️❤️❤️ If it were possible, I would like to live in Chani's head. This book has an amazingly impressive storytelling. I don't think it's all that unique, but the way the author tells it is stunning. I soaked up every word. And in the end, it didn't bother me at all that there were only two sex scenes. This book made me immensely happy and satisfied my brain in a way I haven't had in a long time.
I don't dare say even the slightest thing about the plot, because I feel like even one word would spoil so much, it would ruin everything. I'm curious whether it will be just as exciting and mind-blowing when I re-read it.
Fox and Jiro are very interesting and yet so similar in their differences. 💕

Less than a day together and it was already painfully obvious that Fox had a mercurial temperament. People like that, the ones who gave into their whims, were dangerous. And not only that, he was charming to boot.

The relationship that develops almost in the background more as a "triviality" is beautiful. Romantic feelings grow only very tentatively and actually have no chance to blossom.
And when it does happen and they trust each other 😍😍😍

Fox went still, synapsis firing as he registered first the warmth of Jiro’s lips and then the rough, demanding press of them against his own. One second he was frozen and the next he was parting for him, letting him in, matching the stroke of Jiro’s tongue with a frantic one of his own.

Who would have thought that detectives in space would be my thing. I'm going straight to the next book and hope there will be more in the future ... Chani, please write more of these, I'm addicted now. 💕💕💕

That was fantastic!
Not usually into sci-fi but that was a fun chase through space with surprising twists and turns.
Enjoyed the push/pull, trust/mistrust between charismatic Detective Fox and the stoic Captain Jiro.
I am always a sucker for the super smart and charming thief character.

“Fox dropped his palms to Jiro’s waist, dragging him closer as they kissed like they weren’t currently in a crowded bar, surrounded by strangers. Like they weren’t a detective and a captain. Like they didn’t live on different planets. Like nothing else mattered but the satisfaction of finally knowing what internally combusting felt like.”

One of the very few favorite reads this year and what a fantastic surprise. I was curious after reading the blurb and I still hesitated because me and sci-fi don’t mesh too well but in the end the curiosity won. Such a good book!!! Fabulous world building and pretty good writing (some reversed letters here and there and some small grammar mistakes though ) and fascinating characters. Fox was amazing and Jiro 😍😍😍 And beautiful Shilling, how I loved him!!!
It hasn’t got too much smut but the one that’s there is hotttt . It has also got plot twists and surprises, adventure and action and flirting and an interesting and beautifully executed plot . I sincerely recommend it .

This was really fun, even though I figured out the twist really early on 😂

I'm really enjoying exploring more and more planets in this story universe, and I remember Fox from when he popped up in Shade and Apollo's story - I really enjoy when an author has all these little interconnecting relationships between their books!

It was definitely the tamest when it came to spicy scenes though, I think there were maybe two? But I actually loved that because it was more about the plot and building their relationship, which I always prefer!

This book just did not work for me, I almost DNFed every day for 3 weeks. While I enjoy the complex sci-fi world-building that spans a few of Feener's books, I found this almost unreadable. It's about a supposedly very suave and cheeky intergalactic detective - Fox - sent to solve a series of baffling thefts in the heart of a wealthy empire. His liaison in this case is an uptight captain - Jiro - that he immediately has the hots for. That's a pretty cool premise. But actually, it was soooooo boring. From the beginning we were told that Fox is this top-rate detective who is super charming and a bit of an iconoclast, but I never felt that he was. It felt like the author was telling us how to feel about a character, rather than letting us come to our own conclusions. The romance was lukewarm at absolute best, I mean the chemistry was just non-existent. Again, we are told that these two are vibing, but I just never saw evidence of this, their interactions felt super forced. I found the plot too convoluted and by the time the big twist and reveal happened, I just didn't care any more. Again, I think the setting has merit - Feener has created a literal universe, but this book just wasn't it.

I really enjoyed this. It’s nice to know Chani can write non dark romances as well.

Fox was a very charming character and I can see why Jiro couldn’t resist. The over all mystery was good. I had it figured out pretty early but it did not diminish my enjoyment of the book. Good vs. Evil. Good won in this case. No gray.

Off to read the other book in this universe….

I will admit that it took me a bit to get into this, but I think that was more a mood thing for me. Once it started, I had trouble putting it down. I did see the twist coming before the big reveal, but we were expected to, I think. This is a great addition to this author's body of work.

Things I liked about this book:

Plot development. No spoilers, but this is an adventure. There are things and people who are more than what they seem. Mysteries to solve. It’s all super engrossing.

World building. It’s a fascinating universe, and I particularly enjoyed the fact that characters navigating it acknowledge that they don’t always get the nuances and complexities of the world(s) they inhabit— to me that felt like a relatable element in all the imaginative spaces.

The main characters, most of the time. Fox and Jiro have an interesting dynamic that’s easy to get sucked into, as well as qualities that make each of them appealing in their own right.

4.5 stars.

4.5/5

I really loved this book, the characters are fantastic, the story is interesting, the plot twists are good - I did wonder about some of them, if my thoughts were the direction that the author was going to go. Really enjoyed the queer representation and how that integrated into the societies mentioned in the book. I loved Fox, his mind (how he goes about solving the mystery is fascinating), and of course his interactions with his crew and Captain Jiro.

Diving into Chani's Endless Book:

I was given a beta copy of Chani Lynn Feener's new book, A Sea of Endless Light. I work with the author on her Street Team and get free eBook copies to review or to give feedback before the publication deadline. Her new book is a standalone in her new series "Chani's Sea Universe," as I have deemed it. There is no official name as of yet. A Sea of Endless Light is about Fox Axford, a detective, who was assigned a case on a different planet called The Hild. He meets with the Imperials, though has a habit of keeping secrets. He is well-known to be charming, in this investigation he meets Captain Jiro Arc who also has secrets. As the case progresses, they discover more to it than what they were assigned and take on a deeper mystery and risk the chance of death or prison time. The main characters are Jiro Arc and Fox Axford, accompanied by Nova and Dawson. The main target audience is of the LGBT community and allies, sci-fi, romance, and mystery readers.

One of the main themes that really stood out to me throughout the book was Detective Fox's question, "You're lying to me, but are you betraying me?" He has this habit of thinking back on this statement and analyzing his own internal conflicts. So much so he states, "I could get over being lied to if the circumstances made sense." One other theme that stood out to me was the idea of secrecy and how it brought the book to a whole new meaning. A Sea of Endless Light was a book that had many different elements that tied the plot twist, that were obvious to me as a person with context from the author, together beautifully. When putting aside the context and reading the book, I can admit it was shocking. The word "secret" was used countless times, emphasizing the human, or rather species, behavior. She also uses personification in a way to show that before Fox learned to trust and love, he closed off from something long-term, his only love is a spacecraft. I absolutely loved the way she made me feel certain emotions I have never felt for fictional characters.

I review based on the Goodreads rubric, although a five (5) star is perfect in my eyes. Like anything personal, everything is subjective. I have a rubric of my own on my Goodreads profile, ranging from "No, oh God, why?" To, "Yes, just what I was looking for." I rated this book a solid five (5) stars as I found the plot pulled me in right from the start. The characters were so well written that I had no confusion as to who was speaking, each given their own personality and way of talking. I absolutely lost myself in this 400-page book, finishing it in four days. At first, I thought it would start off the same way her first "Sea" book did, starting right on the case. The book did not disappoint, it began with a brief introduction to the way the characters began and why they were there. When I completed the book, I was left with a book hungover, a phase that left me emotional and incapable of thinking about anything else. I decided to consult the author and made a few jokes about me writing fan works, for which she responded with "Do it." I have honestly read many books in which I analyzed for my AP Literature class, and I have decided to put this book right up there with them.

A bit of insight to how I felt while reading this was Chani, the author, had me doing things out of character. She made me giggle, scream, and even cry. I shouted in frustration and left me shocked, as well as mildly disgusted with someone's actions done by characters. From the snide comments from the characters to the banter among sibling like friendships. The imagery provided, and finally, the way I can't wait to grab a physical copy of the book myself.

One of the best books I’ve read. With well developed characters, spicy romance and a great storyline. This book had quite a few plot twists that kept me wondering what was going on and not wanting to put it down. The ending was one of my favourite parts of the book (no one says that often) and reminded me of Leigh Bardugos six of crows series where you think you know what’s going on but you don’t. Kaz does. But in this case, you think you know what’s going on but you don’t, Fox does. A great read, I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a mystery based on another planet or my fellow LGBT+ people looking for some representation or just a male lead you can identify with.

So why not 5 stars?

I will rarely give 5 stars after reading hundreds of YA and adult fantasy, sci fi, mystery etc. books and though I love this one it just didn’t quite reach the same level of writing as my favourite books. Sometimes when I’m reading the book just misses some fullness, whether that’s something in the writing or the detail of the book, it just isn’t as satisfying to read. This one is close though.

❤️ The first read for this author with this book I loved.
Detective Fox was on a new galaxy police force mission to find a thief somewhere in the six moons' solar system.
Fox and his team set off with Captain Jiro's help after they meet with the Empress. After the meeting with the Empress, Fox notices a few things that keep cropping up in the story with Jiro, making me intrigued by what is happening.
I haven't read Sci-Fi much, but I was intrigued by what would happen after the first few pages. A mystery quickly forms, and Fox tries his flirtation with Jiro. But Jiro acts like he's not interested when he's very attracted to Fox. I loved the vibes coming off these two as they bickered and bantered around.
This book includes both povs in the third person. The story has a lot of internal thoughts as they think about all the clues and suspicions of the thief. Twists and turns kept the story interesting. The Sea Of Endless Light is a great book to get glued on as the characters play out their scenes. Hot sexy scenes, fun banter, and a mystery of stolen things led to a great ending.

This was okay but not great. I clocked the twist the second the possibility of the species was described (46%), but I just wasn't super feeling the relationship, the writing was a bit clunky, but the most bothersome thing was the contemporary language conventions and world elements that sucked me out of it being sci-fi. Maybe if I read a contemporary or paranormal or hers I would feel different. Interesting idea but not good sci-fi.

I really enjoyed the characters of Fox and Jiro both individually and together. Both had just the right amount of swagger and arrogance mixed with a leavening dose of charm, wit and an intense attraction to each other. It was clear that there were mysteries to be solved way beyond just Fox's capture of the thief he is initially after. I thought I'd made decent guesses about some of them, but the author surprised me and kept me reading way past bedtime.

I loved this book. I never read Sci-Fi, but this one caught my eye. The world-building was done very well. It was subtle without being an info dump. The two MCs were so great, and I enjoyed seeing their relationship evolve. There were interesting twists that I didn't predict. I was very impressed. I love the writing style. The author was very engaging. I highly recommend the book. If you don't like sci-fi, give this a go. You might surprise yourself. Thanks for the ARC!

Read for a group challenge week 6. Yay, Fox's story. It was kinda soft. Fox felt very go with the flow with the only thing bothering him being betrayal. The worry and seriousness was all Jiro. I did prefer Shilling when he popped up. Obsidian was your typical bad guy. Shame the sister couldn't be saved. Bit of a slow read this one.

What an amazing Sci-Fi journey with a touch of romance. Fox and Jiro are two of the most well written characters I have read in a long time. You really find yourself caring for and rooting for them through our the story. The twists and turns are fantastic. This is a story you don’t want to miss out on.

This is the type of sci-fi I like the most – casual sci-fi with a lot of “Earth inspiration”. I don’t even really care if it didn’t make sense that there was a Jacuzzi in a hotel room on another planet; or if they spoke exactly like people on Earth do – like give me all of that! I think that’s why I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. If someone told me this was like a “casual” sci-fi rather than a hard (to understand) sci-fi I would’ve read it earlier.

I enjoyed the amount of action that the author wrote in the book. It wasn’t too much and it was easy to follow. Easy to follow for here means as much as I do love science fiction (in any format), I often sit there and go “huh?” when I’m reading a sci-fi book. You know those Tiktok videos where it goes something like “And then we traveled to dhdhgjgj and we spoke to wjergjefe” – because it’s making fun of fantasy books with weird/difficult names? That’s me but with sc-fi. I have no issue reading Fantasy and their names, it’s most of what’s in sci-fi that just has me scratching my brain 😂.

I liked Fox Axford basically just from the start. He was snarky and I love snarky characters. I’m guessing Chani Lynn Feener likes writing a lot of snarky/sarcastic characters because they were in her other book I read recently too (Abandoned Things). She writes them well, I must say! I think sometimes you get those characters who are trying too hard to be sarcastic and you can tell when you have a case of that – which isn’t the case here.

Fox was a fun character to get to know. His motivations were clear and he wore his heart on his sleeve – which I liked to see. He knew what he wanted and he just went for it, sometimes recklessly, but passionately either way. I don’t think I can ever get tired of characters who know what they want and make plans to go for it. Okay, maybe if the character is a full villain, then I’m not so happy. Grey villains get a pass, of course 😄.

I think at the very beginning I didn’t really like Jiro Arc and I was glad that that quickly turned around because he was also such a great character. He didn’t show a lot of his personality until you got to know him so I enjoyed getting to know more of him. I liked that he only showed that he, too, could be snarky but only after you got to know him – which is true for a lot of people, actually.

Shilling is another character that pops up and he’s also just a super fun character. I think the author had some fun creating him and writing him. He originally comes off as carefree but he’s revealed to be much more and I ended up enjoying his character more than I thought I would.

The relationship was very cute and just like in Abandoned Things I was grinning a lot because they’re cute, all right? They matched together well and they had a lot of chemistry – which, of course, is always a good thing. I like it when I can tell the author had fun writing characters/their banter and this is definitely one of those cases.

Dawon and Nova were two characters that while I clocked their personality early on I also would’ve liked to know more about them. I liked the easy banter the two of them had with Fox. Sure, Dawon is Fox’s cousin so they already know each other but all three of them had that easy banter between them – something I love to see in books and never get bored of it.

I loved this book and read it in two days. The story itself outside of the romance aspects was super captivating and kept me roped in when I wasn’t caught up in the spicier romantic moments or sexual tension between the two main characters. That said, the relationship buildup and development between the two was amazing and made me want more of them even after the story wrapped up beautifully.

I can do nothing but recommend this book.

The characters are great, charming, and interesting, and I think they will stay with me for a long time. The story arc has perfect timing and well-written development. The romantic part is full of emotions and is really steamy. As well as that, it has an excellently executed mystery segment. It kept me up until 4. am and I enjoyed every page of it.

Thank you, dear author.

I had a bit of trouble getting into this book, but once I did, I couldn’t put it down. I loved the character of Intergalactic Police Force Detective Fox Ashford, his chameleon personality, changing based on who he was talking to, be it witnesses, colleagues, law breakers, or flirting if someone caught his attention. Fox has come to the Hild Empire to catch a thief that has been stealing random things from the various moons, but has also been seen near the quarters of the Imperial Prince, raising alarms for his safety.

Captain Jiro Arc is the head of what would be the palace guards, Fox’s liaison and temporary partner for the investigation, and a man who has awakened Fox’s sexual interest and very flirty behavior. Jiro is a very taciturn man, not responding to or even ignoring Fox and his flirting.

Fox actually has a run-in with the thief, Shilling, and finds himself attracted to the man as well as finding more questions about the man and his motives after the encounter. The remainder of the book deals with trying to catch the thief, determine possible motives to help plan his capture, discovering some things that don’t add up and indicate some other illegal activity going on that may hinge on motive, and the ever-present attraction between Fox and Jiro.

Characters were well-developed and interesting, plot had some twists and turns, an unexpected development or two if one wasn’t paying attention, and a satisfactory outcome. The settings were well thought out and added a lot to the story. A very engrossing and enjoyable read.

Great story!

This is a sci-fi full of action and political intrigue. There is a fair amount of romantic pursuit and captured hearts, too! I liked it as much or more than the first. Recommend.

This book is awesome. It kept my interest til the end. I love Jiro and Fox. Fox is so clever and it's sexy af. The idea of the Gemini is brilliant! I hope there are more of them that we see in other books. They're fascinating.
