Something horrible is loose in Chartaropa State Park and it has already claimed six victims. This leaves detective Jake Holtz in a mad scramble to figure out what is really going on before the body count grows.
The characters in this book insult each other so good, like, I know that’s not how I should start a review about a seriously great monster in the woods book, but I had to mention it. This book felt like a side story from Koontz Watchers; only with the gore and monster action turned up to a level no Golden Retriever would be able to read, SORRY DEAN! Radar Deboard makes this thing go from 0-190976 in two pages, hold on for your life and watch out for the branches smacking you in the face. That’s not to say this is nothing but a fast paced violent read; remember the character thing I mentioned? The characters have some seriously great dialogue and banter, the kind of stuff I would love to see on film. K thx.
Just Keep Running, by Radar DeBoard, is a quick-read creature feature that takes place in a state park. Detective Jake Holtz gets an unexpected call to assist at the scene of a grisly crime, much to his irritation, as the park is not in his jurisdiction. What he sees leaves the hardened detective reeling. Meanwhile, Ryker and his girlfriend, Morgan, are visiting the park for a weekend camping trip, something Morgan can’t wait to do and Ryker begrudgingly agrees to. Before it’s all said and done, each of these characters will come face-to-face with a terrifying monster that stalks the woods and viciously hunts down its prey. Will they survive to tell about the beast that haunts the park?
While there were a couple of things that didn’t work for me personally, this had an ending I wasn’t expecting that worked surprisingly well, and is definitely worth reading, especially if you love a good creature book. This is my first from Radar and I’m glad I have other books of his on my shelves, as it definitely won’t be my last!
Not only does this book have a great title, it also lives up to the name. A huge winged-creature is picking off campers at an idyllic National park where Ryker is staying with his girlfriend. Cue lots of running, lots of killing (the bodycount is phenomenal) and lots of bickering from the buddy movie cop due there to investigate the murders.
What Radar does well is plot, pacing and shocks. With the latter includes a surprise ending which nicely sets up a very different sequel.
In my spooky/horror mood i happened across this short story & I'm pleasantly surprised yet confused. It's not often a story does this to me & its not bad just... whoa. So many questions. I did enjoy the dual pov & the ending i did NOT see cominh honestly. Can't wait to check out something else by this author
This was really enjoyable escapism. A fast-paced creature feature without the cliches and weak plots you often find. The characters were great and vivid, the descriptions were fantastic and I'm now excited to read book two. This would make a great film too.
Lots of good things in this story and a few surprises. The characters, creature and setting were good and interesting. Things didn't quite go the way I expected for a couple of people, and the ending...I'm not sure if I liked it or not, but it gave me something to think about, which is good.
A great, quick monster read with so much death and gore that'll have you keep turning pages waiting for the death count to go up. I was quite loudly rooting for Ryker, and I don't know if I should be happy or upset with the end, which, but the way, was an ending I did not see coming!
