Warm Up: The Academy Years

Rate this book
He’s a defenseman on the academy’s hockey team – a well-known player on and off the ice.

It’s a reputation he wears proudly…flaunts, even. The only one he has to look out for is himself. No one expects anything else.

Thanks to past mistakes, I have a whole lot of responsibilities outside of the academy, and have no choice but to put others in my life first. They count on me, but you know what? I’m lonely.

I guess that’s why I got all tangled up in the guy whose only focus is on hockey – and fun.

What I hadn’t meant to do, however, was fall head over heels for the player who only wanted one thing from me. Can you say been there done that?

But I think, underneath it all, there’s a lot more to him than even he knows and maybe his choices aren’t his own. Maybe someone else is pulling the strings.

Either way, when past mistakes catch up with me again, the team’s biggest player must decide whether to follow the path carved out for him and walk away from me, or shape his own future, and become the man he keeps well hidden.

WARM UP is the second instalment in Cathryn Fox’s contemporary, new adult SCOTIA STORMS: REBELS-THE ACADEMY YEARS hockey, romance series. This is college hockey player Matt Morgan, and single mother/music student Kennedy Walsh’s story line. WARM UP can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous storyline is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Kennedy and Matt) WARM UP follows the building romance and relationship between Matt and Kennedy. Kennedy is a single mother who works two jobs in an effort to support herself and her daughter but getting fired meant Kennedy was desperate for a job, and found herself cooking and cleaning for an on campus frat house that housed several members of the college hockey team. Enter Matt Morgan, the man with whom Kennedy will fall in love. Matt Morgan’s reputation both on and off the ice precedes his introduction to our story line heroine but neither Matt nor Kennedy is looking for a permanent relationship, and a friends with benefits affair is perfect until the heart wants something more. As Kennedy and Matt’s relationship begins to take on a life of its’ own, perceived betrayal threatens to destroy the couple’s tentative hold on a happily ever after, for now. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Kennedy and Matt, and the potential fall-out as Matt’s future plans do not involve a ready made family.

Kennedy Walsh is a single mother, struggling in the wake of betrayal and lies. Living with her mother, Kennedy works two jobs, attends college, and raises her daughter without the support of her ex or his money. Kennedy never expected to fall for a man whose reputation as a one-night stand kind of guy threatens all good sense but Kennedy’s heart wants something Matt may be incapable of giving. Matt Morgan’s plans for the future include making it big in the NHL but Matt found himself falling for a young woman and her infant child, falling hard in the face of warring emotions.

The relationship between Kennedy and Matt is one of immediate attraction that begins when Kennedy is fired without cause. The Frat house needs a new cook and house keeper, and Kennedy is the perfect candidate, desperate enough to ignore all the potential rumors about Matt and the players. Matt Morgan quickly pulls Kennedy under his wings, falling for a woman who is perfect for Matt but not necessarily perfect in the eyes of everyone else. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top sexually graphic language and text.

The secondary and supporting characters include Kennedy’s mother Barb; Kennedy’s friends Amy, and Piper; as well as Matt’s brother Liam, and their grandfather Gary. We are reintroduced to Sawyer and Chase (Away Game #1), as well Sawyer’s friend Daisy, and fellow hockey player Beckett. Piper and Beckett’s story is next in CRASH COURSE.

WARM UP is a story of family, friendships, betrayal and love; a story of relationships, misunderstanding, and acceptance. The character driven premise is captivating; the romance is seductive; the characters are charismatic and perfect for one another.

Can love be enough?

When two beautiful soles get to know each other in a sweet slow burn you just might find forever. Matt believes he’s only good at one thing and that’s Hockey and Kennedy believes since she a mom, and college student she needs to put her own needs aside. Matt want to show her that she matters but his fears of inadequacy comes from years of a mentally controlling grandparent. Can the be so much more together?

The author writing is flawless, and the words are so captivating, the plot had so many twists and turns and none that I was expecting, and many shockingly intimate I have become a huge fan of this author. The author writes with so much intensity and emotion pulled from each book it’s felt page after page. Some are quick witted story lines are so perfect and lets you believe you have a front row seat. So being able to read this love story didn’t disappoint. The authors ability to have two separate individuals struggling in their everyday life and try to navigate someone else’s thoughts, needs and desires was intense and gives all the fills.

Authors Blurb: He’s a defenseman on the academy’s hockey team – a well-known player on and off the ice.

This book has everything I love in a book. Then you add that it's beautifully written and believable. It is easily a five star read. Written in dual POV my personal favorite this story flows so incredibly well that the next thing you know your 80% into the book and loving every second of it. The believable way the characters interact is perfect. Run, Hop, Jump or use your (1 click) finger to do whatever you have to do and get this amazing book. It'll break your heart, you'll want to scream with frustration and it'll let you discover that love just might conquer all. The chemistry is steamy and sweet and oh so romantic.

Thanks Netgally for letting me read and review.📚💕

Warm Up is sweetly endearing and full of all the warm, buttery, never-want-to-stop-reading feels.

Matt has only ever had one purpose in life, hockey. He's never had to focus on anything or anyone else, but as he's reaching the end of his college career and the NHL life is looming, all the shallowness of having nothing else or noone else to worry about is beginning to settle within him, and well...the deeper waters of life begin to look less scary. When Matt meets Kennedy he's instantly hooked and it really hits him that he might not exactly be prepared for her and all of her life experiences, but for the first time in his life he'd actually like to try.

Kennedy is a single mother, going to school and has two jobs that barely make ends meet. She definitely doesn't have time to date, but perhaps a little one on one action with a hot hockey player would sooth the itch. When Matt walks into her life she thinks she might have found a solution to solve one of her problems. It's been way too long and she knows all about his reputation so it should be easy to walk away, except when it isn't. Matt ends up being way deeper than she initially thought and the moment he meets her daughter...ovary explosion!

Matt and Kennedy shine and radiate when they are around one another. Neither of them are relationship gurus, but their intimacy and sweetness roll off the pages and they become better versions of themselves by being together. That is what love does. It is the small moments that all bundle into a lifetime of big ones. It's the fact that someone makes your life better just by being in your presence and Warm Up is one of those stories that made me warm up from the inside just by reading it.

Matt has been focused on hockey for as long as he can remember, and the NHL is looming & since it's the ultimate dream, he's not interested in relationships which makes him a very big player. Kennedy is a single mother who doesn't have time for relationships since she's not only studying, but is also working two jobs to take care of her tiny human. She loses one of her jobs which is when she starts working at the hockey house which put her in Matt's path on the regular. They have an instant connection but as I said, neither want a relationship, and she's been burned by a man in the very recent past. They decide on a friends with benefits thing, and it's all fun & sexy games until feelings get caught which really complicates things. I wanted the world for Kennedy, and since she's catching feelings for a player on & off the ice, well it's not exactly smooth sailing but it did keep me turning the pages quickly. I'm excited for more of this series & HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Matt has always put hockey first and everything else second and his goal of playing professionally is within his grasp. He doesn’t need to be distracted by anyone or anything but when Kennedy and her daughter come into his life he begins to question if he could have more than hockey in his future.

Kennedy is strong and resilient as she struggles to finish college, works multiple jobs and trying to be the best mother she can to her daughter. She doesn’t have the time, energy or desire for a relationship but a fun fling with Matt may be exactly what she needs. What could possibly go wrong?

Although Matt and Kennedy both agreed that what they shared was casual it soon become apparent that they are anything but. When their feelings for each other are tested they will need to decide if what they share is worth fighting for.

College hockey player and single mom singer,

When Matt rescues Kennedy from a drunk, their paths cross and keep crossing.
Though they are in very different lanes. Matt is a college player and hockey player and doesn't deviate from his goals.
Kennedy is a shy, quiet single mom, who gets up on stage and performs with her guitar.
Recommend.

Kennedy is an aspiring musician and single mother, trying to make ends meet whilst studying, whilst Matt is their college’s hockey star with a reputation on campus for being a player. Sparks fly when Matt intervenes with a rowdy drunk at one of Kennedy’s performances, though both of them are reluctant to pursue the attraction between them: Kennedy wants to protect her young daughter and Matt’s had it drummed into him since he was a child that he needs to keep his focus on hockey. But when they keep on running into each other, they find it harder and harder to ignore their real feelings.

This was quite a nice read. The romance between Kennedy and Matt was quite sweet, they were both very into each other in a way that was quite endearing and I thought they had some lovely moments together. There was decent chemistry between them and I thought the sex scenes were hot and well-written.

I did think though that some of the writing could have been a little tighter - there were some slightly clunky moments and some of the plotting felt a bit rushed, and I found the characters a little bit bland. Overall I thought the book was quite a nice read with some good ideas, and I enjoyed reading it. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing a free copy of this book.

This is book two in The Scotia Storms series and it is Kennedy and Matt's story and it is definitely a must read. Matt is a hockey player and he also has a reputation when it comes to women and he also doesn't do relationships or commitments as his main focus and goal is to play in the NHL so being care free suites him just fine. Kennedy is a single mother to her daughter Madeline and she works two jobs while going to college so life is very hectic and hard but when she looses one of her jobs she needs another and that is when she ends up cooking and cleaning at the house on campus that houses the hockey team. When Kennedy and Matt meet there attraction and chemistry is instant but neither want a commitment especially after Kennedy was lied to and betrayed by her ex so they end up being friend's with benefits not knowing that it will not only change there lives but also complicate things even more. I couldn't put this book down as it was a real page turner and so addictive. The characters and storyline pulled you in right from the start and kept your attention throughout and I can't wait to read more book's by this author in the future.

Kennedy - singer songwriter, college student, housekeeper… and mother. She doesn’t have time to date….

Enter the gorgeous hockey playing stud that is Matt. Playboy who doesn’t want to date either, he’s too focused on the NHL.

So what happens when two people who are attracted to each other, who don’t want to date anyone meet?

Only the best drama.

I am in love with Matt! He’s a perfect gentleman and so damn adorable! Kennedy is so sweet and is trying her hardest to juggle everything going on in her life. Go her!

I am also absolutely in love with their sarcastic bantering. It’s written and said so naturally that it feels like these things could happen, these things would be said in that moment. Other books I’ve read where they’ve tried to put in humour it hasn’t worked, but Cathryn is brilliant and ever word seems natural.

I kind of wish there was more ice hockey in the book, but it’s only a minor mark against it as this is a brilliant story and so much fun to read. I need to find her first one now, and I have to wait how long for the third!? Not fair!

Thank you NetGalley for this ARC.

Warm Up by Cathryn Fox is the second romance in the Scotia Storms series. This romance features Kennedy, a singer song writer, and Matt, a star hockey player. When Matt stands up for Kennedy when a guy approached her at one of her gigs, a romance starts to bud and quick turns into so much more.

I really wanted to love this book, my ideal romance has college hockey players and your girl next door, which this book had, but I just couldn’t connect with this romance. Maybe it’s because I’ve read so many other college hockey romances that were spectacular that this one fell short for me. I enjoyed the characters and the sweetness between them, but I started to lose interest in their romance along the way. This was still a good and well written romance that is worth a try if college hockey romances are your thing, I just couldn’t connect like I wanted to, but I still think this was a good book.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series but I kind of settled into the fact book two wouldn’t be quite as good. Boy was I so happy I was so very wrong.
Matt appears to be at a crossroads in his life. He knows hockey will be a part of it but he seems to think no one expects him to be anything more than a hockey player, especially his family. So when he meets Kennedy he holds himself back a little and tries to be the man he is known for around campus.
Reading these two navigate a potential relationship really brought out the best in each other, and also brought out the worst in others. I was cheering so hard for these two to make it even with all the obstacles in their way. As it is a romance novel, a HEA is almost always guaranteed and when these two end up with theirs it was beautiful to read. Book three looks like it’s going to be a doozy, and I am definitely here for it. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.

This is the second book in this amazing series, and this is Matt and Kennedy’s journey. Matt is a defenceman for the campus hockey team, and he has no time for relationships as he is completely focused on an NHL career. Kennedy is a single mom, who works two jobs to support herself and her daughter, as well as being a music student, and lives with her mom. When she is fired from one job, she is desperate to find another one, and ends up cooking and cleaning in a frat house, which is where she meets Matt. There is an instant connection between these two, and the sparks fly. This is a beautifully written story which has family, friendships, romance, lies, betrayal, passion, emotions, and love, which leads to a steamy and heartwarming addictive page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

This book gave me all the feels, what a great story! 5 stars for this one!
Kennedy is just trying to get by, working nights playing at a bar, while raising her daughter Madeline and finishing school. What she didn't plan for was a knight in shining armor stepping in when she's being accosted while performing, but that's exactly what Matt does. She knows all about him, from the stories around campus, but that doesn't stop her heart from beating double time when he's there.
Matt has been raised with one goal and purpose, make it to the NHL and become a super star, anything less is not acceptable. He's not looking for anything serious, but when Kennedy steps into his life, along with her daughter, his dreams start to change, but will his grandfather allow this to happen?
I didn't want to put this book down! Don't miss out on this one!

Oh Matt, you big cinnamon roll, how could I not love you? Kennedy was awesome as well and saw Matt for the wonderful person he was from the start! In a clear case of what seems to be opposites attract, these two have perfect chemistry from the start. Despite telling themselves they are not in a relationship, they kinda are, as they are drawn to each other over and over again, and spend more and more time together. Self-doubt is the problem here, and it crashes into their existence before it can be stopped. But things work out, with a little help from friends, and a grovel, and an HEA in the making <3

I really enjoyed this story and plan to purchase the first one in the series. This story is about Kennedy and Matt. They have known of each other for a while but meet officially when Matt steps up to help her in a bar. The story moves along at a quick pace, we learn a bit more about Matt's background (and a little of Kennedys). They developed a romantic relationship that is both sweet and sexy. This was a great story from start to finish.

I enjoeyd Kennedy and Matt's story. I loved both of their characters. They're so fun, entertaining and really sweet. I especially loved their banter, back and forth. Though they didn't want to date each other, they couldn't deny the chemistry and attraction between them. But Matt has his work cut out for him as Kennedy has been burned before.

I loved their sweet and heartfelt romance. I really enjoyed it.
