8/1/2023 - First things first. Why do the sun and clouds have teeth?!? Creepy. And there’s a large bird flying while holding what looks like a yoga mat or sleeping bag. Maybe it was a carrier pigeon?? IDK, but I was hoping to solve that mystery. Maybe it’s all because kids draw weird things sometimes.
Anyway, 4⭐️ because my daughter requested this book be read 5 times today. It is a cute story; just creepy teeth.
Three little chicks joyfully explore their neighborhood on foot and by bus, then return to their cozy home and welcoming caregivers. Toddlers will enjoy the bright watercolor illustrations and simple text of this compact board book. Reviewer 8
From the well-known author of the wildly popular EVERYONE POOPS book comes a new board book featuring little chicks on an adventure.
With simple water-colored illustrations, children will see three little chicks run out of the house on an adventure through the grass, across town, under the hot sun, and by a neighbor painting his fence. They eventually have to run in the rain and even hide from a large bird swooping over them. They appear to tire out and need to take the bus back so they can run back into the happy arms of their parents.
This is a great book for beginning readers because there are a lot of repetitive words and simple sentences.
First sentence: Three little chicks run. They run together. They run energetically. They take a rest and then keep running.
Premise/plot: Three little chicks run through ninety percent of this board book. On every spread, these three are running. Why are they running? Don't know. Should we care why they are running? Maybe.
My thoughts: This one left me with a huh???? I'm not sure why these three chicks are running....and why I should care that they are running. Also why is the sun hot pink or red? Are these three chicks running from the apocalypse??? (Probably not). This one may appeal to other readers.
Taro Gomi's unique style has a mysterious power to captivate children that defies explanation. I read Little Chicks with my first grader, expecting her to find it a little too simple. Little Chicks portrays three busy little chicks, who run and jump and explore and go, go, go all day long. Their adventure ends the way all good bedtime stories should: running back home to their parents. My daughter cheered and applauded her love for the little chicks. She adored the story she could read all on her own and was eager to read it again.
Read as a nomination in the Fiction Picture Book book award category as a panelist for Children's and Young Adult Bloggers' Literary Awards (Cybils Awards).
Jack borrowed this book from the Oxford Public Library. I picked it because he likes chickens.
Sure enough, Jack loved this book. More than I expected, actually. He liked the chicks running and enjoyed how I asked, "What are they doing? Where are they going? They're so fast!" I also pointed out the red bird that followed them on each page and the bus, which are two things he likes, too. He asked me to read it two more times.
Real boon that I can read this to my kids and know I'm also reading fiction in translation. Give me that cultural capital. The illustrations are fantastic, bringing me into a world where chickens drive busses and operate some kind of industrialized economy. For some reason fearsome birds roam the sky that chicks must hide from. Nature has not been mastered.
First published in Japan in 2018 and in 2023 in the United States. This is a story about three little chick siblings who are busy running around their community. Seems that Taro Gomi used more different colors in this title than he usually does.
8/1/2023 - I read this book 5 times today! Twice with Grandma, then with Daddy, then Momma, and then with Daddy again. I loved pointing to the chicks! Momma had already ordered more books by this author from the library!
Cute board book, but it did not keep my child's interest like other books, even with me being very animated, adding beeps for the bus/caws for the bird of prey/etc.
