Fated Fae

The Wolf & the Wildflower

Rate this book
A heartbroken faerie queen in search of an evening of escape awakens the heart of a grumpy wolf warrior who will bring kingdoms to their knees to claim her.

When I was young, I was told that my true love would be a faerie king. I didn’t heed the warning.
I tumbled into love as soon as our eyes first met, unaware that he wasn’t what he seemed.

My king wanted marriage, power, devotion, and a family. He had all but one, and as our kingdom stood upon the precipice of ruin, the weight of failure tore us apart.
Though it was not the war but his betrayal that sent me running to a foreign land.

And straight into the arms of a one-eyed warrior.

The wolf was a weapon of heartless destruction, a rogue without a real name, and nothing I was allowed to want.
A week spent within his city and the walls of his threadbare home was all it took to irrevocably change everything.

And nothing at all.

For there was no escaping the life I’d once thought I’d cherish forever. My kingdom was dying and my king would soon start searching for his missing queen.
Attempting to keep all I’d found in the heartache he’d caused would only create more.

So I fled from the wolf who hadn’t learned my true identity, and I returned to my kingdom with a silent vow to heal my torn heart. I would try to forgive my faithless husband and accept my bloodstained future.

But those meddlesome fates had other plans.

The warrior I’d left without warning was born a hunter and conditioned to be a monster. An alpha in his own right, he would accept nothing less than what he hungered for.
Even if the battle of his life delivered our hearts to their doom and our kingdoms to their knees.
_

A standalone fantasy romance that takes place in the same world as The Savage and the Swan. Can be read on its own. Contains spice and a HEA. No cliffhanger.

I could probably write a whole ass essay on this book, but since I would have to spoil the fuck out of it to do that, I'm going to have to do my best to relay what I can in this vague enough review.

The Wolf and the Wildflower starts out as a one night stand turned days long affair between Aster and Scythe, but it quickly evolves into a complicated, layered story of fate, betrayal, pride, heartbreak, and love filled with twists, turns, and tragedy. If you don't shed a few tears reading this book, you need to check your pulse to see if you're still alive! The intense emotions these characters felt poured off the pages straight into my heart, and I felt every single one of them.

Ella gave me all the emotional torment that made me fall in love with her writing when I read her first NA romance and swirled it together with fantasy and magic. She topped it off with a hefty dose of hot sex and sweet nothings and created utter perfection! This is definitely one of my favorite fantasies she's written thus far.

From the beginning, there are clearly secrets being withheld, but every time you think you've learned them all, you find out you're wrong. Each new bit of information changes so much about the characters and the story, and some of it is absolutely gut-wrenching. Everything is expertly revealed with perfect timing for maximum impact, and it delivers exactly what it's supposed to.

I love Aster and Scythe, but one of the most interesting characters that brought some of the strongest emotions out of me was Rorn. That's probably an unpopular statement, but it's the truth. He is such a tragic character to me, and as fucked up as some of the stuff he did was, my heart broke for him, too.

That being said, I don't excuse him for his unforgivable actions. I do wish things could have ended differently where he was concerned though, and I don't feel even a little bit bad about that. In fact, I bet if we got this story from his point of view, it would have destroyed us all.

I credit Ella's amazing writing for all of my complicated feelings. She could have written Rorn as a one dimensional asshole that didn't know what he had and betrayed the one he loved most for no good reason, but instead, she gave him so much complexity that I'll never forget this story.

Fantasy romance fans, this one's for you!

"Hello, wildflower."
"Hello, wolf."

This.
This is what every love story aspires to be.
I couldn't breathe, couldn't blink, couldn't unlock my grip on this book from the first page to the last. Ella Fields takes romance to an otherworldly level, rising above all others in her ability to write angst, chemistry, fantasy, suspense, and love like magic-infused crack. Oh, my stars, the love between this star-crossed couple is addictive. I could spend an eternity with them.

Dragged for the first half but I loved the second half. Scythe is 🤌

Safety deets spoilers:

No virgins- heroine has only been with her husband(om) and hero. Hero was casually sleeping with women, but no mention how often.

Cheating- heroine is married majority of the book. Om cheated on her and got ow preggo. Heroine cheated on him when she met hero. They tried to make it work again for a bit (after she was with the hero) but she couldn't get past the betrayal. She later kisses him (she was sorta forced to) in front of the hero. I wouldn't call it cheating really though.

Separation (almost 2 years)- heroine kissed, and om tried getting her to have sex with him but she couldn't go through with it fully and that was the last time. Hero tried to briefly move on but couldn't and was completely faithful.

Ow drama- a few mentions of heros past with picking up women at the tavern. One flirted with him and he purposely grabbed her hip and made it look like he was flirting with her to make the heroine jeolous because he was mad. Nothing else happened.

Om drama- heroine is married majority of the book. Om is the main point of tension between them as he doesn't want to seperate and he is in the book a lot too trying to keep heroine.

I think that's it🤔

When Aster was young she was told her true love would be a faerie king. She meets a man and falls hard and fast, but is blinded by love. They rule their kingdom together, and eventually she learns not everything is what it seems. Betrayal sends her running to foreign lands in need of an escape from her responsibilities. She feels trapped, broken and destroyed by heartbreak. She's overwhelmed and desperate for a distraction from her problems back home. When she crosses the Night Sea to hide amongst starngers she collides with a mysterious, one-eyed warrior that is as terrifying as he is beautiful. He radiated strength and power and was intoxicating and addictive. One touch and she wanted to surrender to desire and temptation. He was a wild, untameable, predator known for brutality, but he was also guarded and fiercely protective of his people. One week in his presence made her long for a different life she could never have. They shared a unique connection, and he made her feel reckless and selfish for more precious stolen moments. She would always belong to another, and there was no way to keep the happiness she'd found. As her true identity is revealed things turn complicated. Will she get the future she wants, or will vengeance and secrets destroy everything?

The Wolf & the Wildflower by Ella Fields is a standalone fantasy romance that takes place in the same world as The Savage and the Swan. It's a beautiful, captivating, intense story about fate, survival, trust, loyalty, healing, secrets, and foridden love. It's full of chemistry, intrigue, angst, emotion, wolves, faeries, royals, alphas and plenty of swoon. I was completely consumed with these characters and couldn't put this book down. I love this world so much, and Ella Fields writing is just brilliant! Last year the Savage and the Swan was my favorite book of the year, and it's no surprise this year it's The Wolf & the Wildflower. <333

Her true love would be a king, the sorceress said. Erm technically he was the heir but was never crowned. So the prophecy was false? Also, Rorn got away with everything! He even got a warrior’s last stand scene in the end. Hello? He killed Scythe’s mom. Carelda wasn’t a friend to Aster. She kept sleeping with the woman’s husband in the castle. Wish she died sooner.

Oh my stars! This is such a whirlwind of a love story, that started from what was supposed to only be a one night stand! It’s not a clean cut, boy meets girl and falls in love story, that’s for sure. It’s a complicated love story with so many layers, and nothing is good/bad or right/wrong. It just is. Its life.
The love between Aster and Scythe is as beautiful as it is complicated. The characters are complicated. I got very misty eyed over people I didn’t think I would. It’s just so good, that’s all I can really say. Oh and Scythe is so freaking swoon worthy 🫠

Just as a FYI: This is a labeled as a standalone, but it has important characters from the Savage and the Swan, so you might want to start with that one. That being said, I read that in 2021 but don’t remember much about it and it didn’t affect how I felt about this book.

The Wolf and the Wildflower is layered with twists and turns and endless breathtaking moments. The sexual tension was absolutely perfect, and the characters are forever etched into my heart. The storyline enchanted me, and the action kept me glued to the pages and the PLOT TWIST…OMG! This book refused to be put down! Ella Fields was BORN to write fantasy and every time she releases a new book, I’m reminded of my love of reading all over again. If you love fantasy and romance, you definitely need to add this one to your tbr!

Although this story is technically a standalone there are characters from The Savage and the Swan which is another standalone by Ella which I HIGHLY recommend you read, I also suggest reading that book first so that this one doesn’t spoil it for you!

This story follows Scythe and Aster, and their connection burns quickly and explosively. Their chemistry is undeniable, however right from the start both of them have secrets...

Aster: is as independent as it gets, strong & fierce and yet she’s always struggled to find her place within her kingdom especially now due to an unforgivable act of betrayal which has her fleeing to a new town. Cue in Scythe who comes along and completely flips her world on its axis. When Aster finally starts gaining back control of her life and opening her heart up to Scythe, she has to finally make a decision to go back to her kingdom and try and rebuild her old life or hold on to the only man who’s ever made her feel so irrevocably happy and at peace.

Scythe: *takes deep breath* and his heart-fluttering chuckles, smirks, sarcasm, and dreamy one eye with the scar… 🥺 Scythe stole my heart slowly and then all at once. I love this man and all he stands for. I think he has to be the best and most fascinating male character I have read about in forever. The way his character unravels Aster is utterly mesmerizing. Despite his own demons, he challenges her, pushes her, stands by her, and makes her into a better version of herself. The scenes with them together are pure fire… once again Ella writes smut that has you fanning yourself! 🔥

Thank you for my ARC @ellafieldsauthor I love and adore you! 😘

I've said this in my updates about this book - but I TRULY think Ella Fields is such an underrated fantasy author. She has other romance genre novels, but fantasy writing is where she truly shines.

A SHORT PREVIEW: When Aster and Rorn fell in love, they never dreamed that life ruling a kingdom would be the thing that tears them apart. Ruling isn't everything when money can't buy you the few things you desperately crave. Betraying each other, Aster flees the country and falls in love with another but leaves him in an attempt to spare him from her husband's wrath. The wolf she leaves behind? He's not as keen on the idea, though.

Thoughts: Overall, this story makes no bones about the consequences of infidelity and failed marriages. It's got such serious topics spilling across the pages, that much of it doesn't feel like a light fantasy romance? Tbh - I think this is why I loved it so much. Her writing feels like real emotions and can tug real feelings from you.
- I read this in exactly 9 hours because it was so good I basically flew through all the pages!!
- Another thing I loved about this book is that it so clearly shows the dangers of getting too wrapped up in your partner. Leaving behind friends, your interests etc.. healthy love shouldn't make you lose yourself.

FAVORITE QUOTE: "Rorn would never hurt me - not physically. Nor would he allow anyone else to. I once thought that made him nothing short of magical. Then I learned there were numerous ways to bleed.' - When you recognize that a character's disillusionment in what it means to be in love has shattered ... that's when the good stuff comes in.

NOTES:
- fated mates (complete with the alpha-hole shifter type)
- world building -- super fun because this builds off of The Savage & The Swan, which I also loved!!
- Very much an adult romance, and I added it to my 'mature women's romance' bookshelf here because the main character is in her 30's.

TWs: infertility, cheating, children outside of the marriage etc. (This one def got me to cry a little! I didn't know cheating would be involved in the wayyy it was written so I wasn't expecting it.)

I must say this book sucked me in from the beggining, despite the smut happening in the first few pages and me thinking it was going to get old really fast, Ella Fields did what she does better and messed it all up a little bit (a lot).

I just hated her time back. And I hated her efforts to fix her marriage. And hated Rorn with all my heart.

But it was not all hate. I did love Wolf, and the cottage, and Aster (sometimes). And I didn’t hate the world, although a little bit more info would have been good.

The plot twist (that you could see a mile coming) was kinda meh.

And the alphaness of Wolf was very dull, because excuse me sir, what in the royal fae was that Your blood is supposed to boil, you’re supposed to hunt down, mark, make yours. Not sit back being sad. I’ve read plenty about alphas and wolfs and, sir, that was a tragic mess.

Reviewers said this isnt a love triangle but kinda sounds like it.
Cheating but not between the MCs.
h and the King/om were in love before his betrayal.
the h is married to the OM (kings), and he cheated on her and had a child with the ow. The h was barren.

So she ran away in heartbreak, and had a ONS with the H, and he ended up being her mate.
a week later, she returns home to the cheating- first love- douche..and remains with him for years?

Sounds messy, need safety spoilers.
Does the King/om continue to sleep with the mistress (her friend), and why does reviewers call this OW his- the Kings- mate?

I'm not going to lie I'm very conflicted on what to rate this so I'm just gonna start naming off stuff i liked and didn't.

Liked

Scythe he was pretty awesome. Aster for the most part. Ya that's it.

Disliked

Rorn like holy shit that guy was awful. Take the cheating out and he was still an awful person. He should of been killed just for his crimes against Scythe and his mom. I hated that he never reaped what he sowed. I mean sure he eventually died but he had a warriors death. I felt jipped. He deserved so much worse.

Carelda have some fricken loyalty lady! The ONLY reason she got to be a part of her sons life was because of Aster!! Rorn was gonna rip him from her arms and banish her but Aster stopped it....Yet she continued to screw Aster's husband! But hey she reaped what she sowed I almost felt bad that she got stuck with Rorn as a mate....almost.

That epilouge...like WTF was that?! On one hand I loved that Scythe loved Aster more then having children. They were worried she would perish in childbirth like her mother and grandmother buuutttttt to then have Rorn's kingdom fall and have him summon Scythe and ask him and Aster to raise his son he had with Carelda was just a cherry on the top of a shit sundae..like what was that! But don't worry at the end he asks permission to call them mom and dad🤦‍♀️

So 3 I guess I finished it stars

I was worried that I wouldn’t enjoy this book as much as “The Savage and The Swan” when the two characters met and had sex within the first few chapters of the book. I was worried that the tension would be lost and that the story wouldn’t hold my interest. Boy, was I wrong!

This story was perfect for me. I loved both main characters, Aster and Scythe. Aster was kind, determined and gentle. Scythe was hardened by life, but I fell in love with his unfiltered words, pure intentions with Aster, and his humor. Gah! His insta-obsession and humor were EVERYTHING 😂!

“I’m far from done,” he said to the curve of my shoulder, his mouth caressing the skin. “So maybe you should quickly eat something…”

I smiled and lifted my gown over my head, revealing my bare breasts.

He blinked and took one in his hand. “You can eat later.”

I highly recommend to anyone that wants a JP hero, a great plot, and a decent dash of OP drama 👀

A little disappointed

I love fantasy novels. I enjoyed Kingdom of Villains, it had good lore, dragons, etc. The writing sometimes threw me off, like it’s not always clear. Whether it’s the misuse of commas, or just not worded correctly, it sometimes hard to understand. The Savage and The Swan, however, was perfect. The writing was great, the conflict, world building, even the sex was well-balanced. Now, this book, I was so looking forward to the release, but I find it lacking. I really dislike saying that because I know I’m not capable of writing a story of even half this quality, and lots of time goes into it. However, it had that same patchy writing that I literally had to read some passages over and over and over, and then just move on because it wasn’t clear who the character was speaking of, or even what they meant. It happened even more than KOV. Then, there was SO much sex. And it was also very rapey. Major TW there. The main conflict turned out to be the relationship, not some greater plot. It’s definitely a romance fantasy, not fantasy romance or epic fantasy by any means. It still had the great tropes that I love, the main one being the jealous, controlling alpha male- although it did go too far a couple of times. This is just my humble love of reading, but lack of writing talent opinion. I will continue to look forward to books from this author though!

“Hello, wildflower.”

“Hello, wolf.”

This book really reinforced the fact that I just don't do separation & miscommunication (with a BIG ASS sprinkle of OM drama):

However having said that, I did appreciate the writing of the story. The writing felt very mature and was solid for a fantasy. I absolutely loved the beginning of the book where it was just really intimate, romantic scenes between the MCs. Those scenes really made the book for me.

I just wasn't too fond of how their story played out, and the ending in particular. But overall I did like it- those scenes between the MCs were worth it 🤧.

“Hello, wolf.”

I always enjoy whatever world Ella throws me in to. This is a stand-alone in the same world as The Savage and the Swan. You do not need to read in order, but I would recommend as there are spoilers for the 1st book in this one. The love in this book was all consuming. And the spicy scenes, phew. There is cheating, but not between the main love interests. The FMC is married to another man. I usually cringe at this, but it is done rather well. So, I wasn’t bothered. I hope there are more books to come set in this world.

I'm just not sure what I read here. It's a sequel to The Savage and the Swan, which I read and enjoyed.
*contains spoilers below*
.
.
.
.

In the first few pages, I'm trying to figure out what the FMC's husband that was a big betrayal and why she's running off to go cheat on him. It's also been a while since I read The Savage and the Swan and it just jumps right into the world. There's zero world-building -- people, names, kingdoms, etc are just thrown at you.

So she cheats on her husband, who turns out, he had cheated on her 24 hours prior and she can warp, so she disappears. She is infertile so it was an extra painful betrayal. So at 4% in (Kindle reader), she sleeps with MMC and stays with him for a week. And it's already being alluded to that they are mates. But we get zero insight into why she and the MMC are mates - they just have a bunch of sex and feel this irresistible pull. But it's not enough of a pull, I guess because she has to go back to her cheating husband and just warps back.

The next many chapters (read: 18 MONTHS IN BOOK TIME), it's dealing with the fall-out of her husband's infidelity and her own infidelity. And at some point, I was confused because should I be rooting for the husband? Did I want them to work it out? And then, right as even the FMC is like feeling hope that they can reconcile, it turns out THE OW IS PREGNANT AND MOVES INTO THE CASTLE.

Then it's just the FMC is this pit of despair, literally wasting away, and I just couldn't understand why she didn't just leave. It was so much internal dialogue of how awful all of this was yet she felt some loyalty to stay. Not to mention there's this entire infertility trope going on that broke my heart. FMC just had to watch OW have her husband's baby so she's upset and still sort of loves her husband (but is pining for MMC too). She becomes friends with OW and it's just all ugh. You can't even hate the OW too much while she knowingly slept with a married man, she was also misled. And the husband tried throwing out the OW after she had her baby and FMC stepped in to make sure she can stay. As a mom, it was kind of traumatic to read because the OW is literally getting torn away from her newborn.

Anyway, FMC finally goes back to MMC after the husband is a Real Bad Guy who poisons her (but all of this is done out of his love for her, guys) and she's hurt and bleeding and the MMC sees her and just basically throws her down and ravages her and initiates the mating bond without her consent. There are, like, so many issues with that. It was kind of ick and also more so considering I still couldn't understand why they were even mates. The MMC has a boring personality other than being an alpha. And I love good smut but that was literally their relationship.

More stuff happens and then the PLOT TWIST, it turns out MMC is the actual heir to the kingdom and the husband had killed MMC's entire family and maimed MMC, left for dead, so MMC couldn't be king. And long story short, everyone forgives the husband/king. Like it's fine. NBD. There's zero retribution or justice for MMC's family. The MMC Doesn't. Want. The. Kingdom. He Just Wants FMC. But the husband just wants FMC too!!!! so that was the whole plot I guess.

MMC and FMC get to run off after FMC's husband permits it but only if they fake their deaths. Then there's this weird moment between FMC and OW where FMC gives her the crown and is like "This is rightfully yours" (BECAUSE it turns out OW is the husband's mate but because he only loves FMC he rejects OW's mating bond) and then they live to be HEA.

But it's like this awful-ish epilogue that 3 years later the kingdom (who has been warring with humans, for really unclear reasons - sorry, lack of world-building) has fallen and the OW-now-queen is dead. I guess he and the OW worked it out and are mates now? Idk? So the FMC's now ex-husband is like "Here's our toddler" and runs off to die a warrior's death (I guess redeemed??) and that's how FMC and MMC have their own child. I just felt so bad at that point - the OW wasn't awful per se - she was a great mother to her child and was always protecting him. And now she's dead and her child is motherless. But hey it's all okay I guess? Because the FMC and MMC get to have a kid now? Then fast forward 8 years it's this production of the now teenager asking to call the MMC "Dad" and how FMC is his real mother... end story.

This was so unlike The Savage and the Swan, and the book bummed me out. It was kind of sad for everyone except the MMC.

“It’s not solely the stars who decide what you will have.”

This book touched places of me I didn’t expect to be touched. I saw so much of my own life in a way I wasn’t prepared for, especially considering this is a fantasy book, and yet, Scythe managed to voice my own feelings in a way that resonated so deeply with me I had to take breaks while reading.

“I’d tasted joy. I’d bathed in its fleeting magic, believing I could somehow tame it. Keep it. Make it mine.”

Aster endured so much grief, and it hurt to see her struggle to continue to do the right thing despite how unfair it was for her. I grieved and raged with her. And I’m afraid I’ll never love a character as much as I love Scythe, from the very first line, and yes the wolf thing has something to do with it and no I don’t want to talk about it. I could read about the two of them for a thousand more pages, especially with how much I saw myself in both of them. I was ridiculously overwhelmed by the epilogue and how beautiful I found the completion of this story.

This book made my heart ache, made me blush and curl my toes, had me setting it down and staring at the ceiling because the DRAMA was just too good. It felt like a warm bowl of soup, comforting in how absolutely satisfying the story was, even if I cried more than I’m willing to admit.

Betrayal from someone who loves you past the point of reason, accidentally finding something too good to be true, the ache to be with who the universe made for you, the fight to get back to each other…UGH, I know I’m just a sucker for soulmates and I love to be sad, but this book was my bread and butter.

Fantasy (but mostly romance), fated fae and forbidden love, standalone. I’m going to go curl up and cry now that this is over.

going back and forth on my rating on this because on one side this took me forever to get into but on the other side holy spice and fantasy lol. I really did like this but apart of me felt like I need a little bit more of them. Like as if I couldn’t get enough? But I also was getting teary by the end, the beginning was rough but the ending? Sensational. Also helped we get to see our favorite swan and wolf.

“Hello, wildflower.” My head tipped right back, and my lips parted when his thumb brushed beneath my mouth. That fluttering returned with a vengeance. “Hello, wolf.”

It's rare that I start reading a book and I am completely hooked from the first chapter on. This was definitely the case for The Wolf & the Wildflower. The fact that the book starts off with a very steamy first chapter certainly helps, but every other chapter after also had me completely hooked. It became evident early on that I'd be obsessed with the rest of the story (I literally couldn't stop reading!).

We follow a new FMC that I absolutely adored, who was complex and loving and deeply hurt. I wanted so much for her to get a break, the poor thing really went through many emotional rollercoasters. We also get the POV of a very familiar side character in The Savage and the Swan, where I didn't even like him that much - but as MMC in The Wolf and the Wildflower I quickly fell in love with him.

🐺 Wolves and fae
🐺 Fated mates
🐺 Heartbreak and betrayal
🐺 Everyone is morally grey
🐺 Lots of steam that's got you weak in the knees 🌶️
🐺 So many secrets

The book takes place for large part simultaneously as The Savage in the Swan, but even though they largely overlap in terms of time, it really is a separate story. Some big events from the first book get mentioned, but don't play that big of a role at all. We follow the same wars, but this time with a different kingdom which I thought was super interesting.

Aster & Scythe are both such great characters and their chemistry is *chef's kiss*. 🥹 Scythe gives total alpha male energy and sweet Aster bites back, I love it. We see some familiar side characters pop up and a few new ones, of which Rorn was such an interesting character. He really surprised me. For most of the book I hated him so much, he did so many things that were truly awful amongst which was betraying and breaking our previous FMC heart and yet ... at the end I really felt for him as well. I really enjoyed how contradicting and three-dimensional the characters felt to make me feel so conflicted.

There are a lot, and I really mean a lot, of secrets and I am happy to say that some of them even I did not see coming. Yes, you sometimes wish that they would just tell each other the truth already but the drama was needed for the plot (we know you love the angst) and whenever things were revealed it was always a very satisfying moment.

"Breathe, wildflower."

This book really went through all the emotions - from kicking and giggling my feet, to swooning and fanning myself, to a buttload of angst and tension. I was right in thinking this would quickly become one of my favourite books!

At first I was feeling a bit conflicted about whether I liked the ending; the epilogues in particular. However, looking back I think it was a quite fitting ending because both respected Aster and gave her something she said she really wanted. 10/10 would recommend this book to everyone.
